To be fair Mario is making the drumkit his bitch in that solo. Also to be fair, he beats so much on that kit the drums are trying to get a restrain order.
It's because the sound of Mario's drumming is so powerful, anditreallyis the driving force of their sound. Then add that to the heaviness of the guitar.
He was just doing an analogy with singers being extremely gifted and skilled how they can sing different ways while staying with the flow of the song, same with Mario with the drums - he stays with the flow while adding his own stuff on it
You guys introduced Gojira to me, and they're easily in my top 5 favorite bands now. I seriously can't thank you guys enough for showing me this amazing band. I've listened to all of their albums all the way through and love them all
Same here. I saw the Flying Whales reaction when they first posted it and now I can’t get enough. Can’t wait to see them live. Waiting for an East Asian tour.
The heavy drum sound is a combination of Mario's drumming, the production and the really low tuning of the drums. Gojira has my favorite drum sound of all time. Mario's drumming is awesome because it's perfectly precise but it doesn't sound like a machine (mostly because of the cymbals and the ghost notes).
Gojira as a band sounds really organic. They don't sound robotic/overproduced in the studio like the majority of the bands nowadays. Their drum sound is enormous but also organic and tight, and the same thing can be said about the guitars. That's why they sound so good live, because what you hear in the studio is the same stuff they play live, without exaggerated post production and stuff like that.

To answer the drumming question, there are tons of factors. You can tune drums to have a heavier feel, you can buy certain brands of drums that can have different sounds. But for gojira it may be a combination of all of those but it's Mario's skill and the intensity he plays at is what gives the drums such a unique sound and heaviness. By far one of the greatest drummers of all time
@@plazmamasta193 I’m not a big fan of constant blast beats, but it not easy to play at that speed at all, and he does make it look easy so I’ll give him that
Kyuss - Gardenia King Crimson - Starless - In the court of the Crimson King Neil Young - Cortez the Killer Pantera - I'm broken (too much Gojira and just one Pantera's theme)
I think Pantera is a band that unfortunately didn't age so well. When I listen to them today, it sounds so juvenile and egocentric, their aggression so angst-ridden. Everything is so "look-how-I'm-better-than you" in their music. Partially I feel that because of Gojira. They are somewhat similar in their sound but much more to say, both musically and lyrically.
Gojira is such a good example of well arranged (produced as well) songs. In a sense it takes on pop music philosophy without getting into the superficial. There are subtle changes every X number of bars, with tiny changes when sections repeat. Melodies are memorable, hooks are combos of band riffing such as the wave of trains and sledgehammers that become the main parts during the verses. Groups of patterns with different sounds, where each note is comprised of attack, differing pitches, differing distortions, according to the instrument, differing kinds of sustains for every hit between each instruments, and a well-placed melody that rides the 8th dimensional waves of what the instruments are doing. Well chosen reverbs and delays will be the sweet glue that thickens and binds it all together. Jealous of you guys, I hope you will have enjoyed the show.
Excellent video as always! Thanks for being free-thinkers and inspiring others to be the same. Gojira - Gift of Guilt gentlemen, that's all I have to say.
Gojira are so fantastically unique, they are kinda a totally new form of melodic death metal with a very heavy progressive eye. I got to see them perform the entire from Mars to Sirius album and it was life changing, they are artists that have reached a level few ever do tool opeth porcupine tree and maybe insomnium are the only bands I would put on the same plateau.
When it comes to drumming, you have to consider, is it a live recording, or studio recorded. There are several factors when getting a specific tone out of your drums: -Type of drum(shell material) -Size of the drum( circumference) - Size of the drumstick - Type Of drum heads used - How you Mic the drums - The player, of course..
...Except it's gotta be the live video version of that song that Gojira published on their UA-cam channel. So brutal, but so artistic at the same time.
Sadly they won't listen to any Pantera song anymore... I've tried so long and they're missing out big time. Pantera is one of the greats! > the big four
Drums have different depths, diameter, skin materials, tightness. And the drummers use different weight and material sticks and also how the hold them and strike with different attacks. A drummer has all sorts of ways to achieve their desired sound and intensity, but there's genius in the conception and the execution that makes some drummers epic legends
First some black metal with teeth. Emperor or ihsahn's solo stuff. Or darkthrone. Getting older is great with darkthrone in your life: it means you've had the chance to listen to more darkthrone. Just like maiden...
Please post an in depth review of seeing them live. I'm dying to see what you guys thought. Not only are they the best band to see live but they are one of the first bands you have seen live in the metal genre. Let's get it Free Thinkers!!!
I was at that show. Flew out from Cali to see it. They are unbelievably tight live. They truly set standard for how all bands should perform and handle their live sound. Unreal show. Hope you guys had a blast 🤘
Just caught Gojira on the Knotfest tour. They seriously brought their A-game to the gig. & Their sound guy cranked them up to 12. It was a holy sh*t moment & everybody took notice.. Great set.
I’d love to see an album reaction. Gojira has great songs that can stand alone, but to really appreciate the music, you gotta experience a full album. Some bands just need that kind of attention.
Lost in Vegas You want to talk about vocal gymnastics? Bow to the King, Mike Patton of Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Dead Cross, Lovage, Peeping Tom, Tomahawk, Crudo, The Tango Saloon. Also in league with The Dillinger Escape Plan
Tool- The Grudge, Parabol/Parabola, Eulogy Black Sabbath- A National Acrobat, Megalomania, Into the Void Deep Purple- Burn, Lazy, Space Truckin' Led Zeppelin- How Many More Times, Bring it on Home, The Ocean
They’ll go crazy over the Parabola transition and the Grudge scream for sure. I think they’d prefer Led Zeppelin’s ‘Dazed and Confused’ over any of those other picks though
"They sound like themselves!" That's simultaneously the greatest compliment and the emptiest description of someone's work :D On the one hand, it says nothing about what they're like; on the other hand, that's what so many artists try to achieve. Well, at least the ones who aren't entirely in it for the money and are just complacent doing the same as everyone else as long as they're getting paid? Also - belated congarats on getting invited to that Gojira gig! Got into your channel from a mention on Gojira's Facebook page. Haven't always agreed with your judgings on various bands - but hey, you've had some fine words for bands I'm not at all fond of, and you've shown some music I'd otherwise not have any chance getting into (since all my hip-hop aficionado friends are currently living in another country).
Yes, you can also tune drums, but the power primarily comes from the player, secondarily from the production and finally from the quality of the drums.
I have listened to metal for a looong time but if it wasn't for your reactions to Gojira, I wouldn't know who they are. I've seen it on your other videos but the studio live version of Gojira's Global Warming neeeeeds to happen! Love from Australia!
For the drumming question coming from a fellow drummer, its a combination of the intensity, style and production. The way he hits the drums is with precision and confidence. His style is unbelievable he plays a lot of notes but all in the right places, he even backs off to compliment the other instruments. And the way they mix the drums ohhhhh boy. Bottom line he's an amazing drummer, definitely underrated.
Tightness! I'm going to take a stab at explaining the wave of power you feel in Gojira songs. A big part of it is the tightness! The drums and guitars are played so perfectly in sync with each other. Not surprising that the guitarist and drummer are brothers. Through the course of a riff/hook, The heavy chord chugging of Joe's guitar consistently comes a split second after Mario's kick drum and snare hits. It creates a drive and a sort of punchyness. The two instruments are being played masterfully. Then on top of all this, you've got the studio voodoo going on. Tools such as Equalization and Compression are being used to maximize that punching, powerful, driving effect. Equalization makes sure that the instruments aren't overlapping too much in their frequency output, which otherwise would cause a swampy, stagnant sound. It helps get each instrument heard clearly. Compression is likely being used to strengthen the signal of the instruments. It enables you to hear the real attack of the drums and guitar slightly slightly longer than you would if uncompressed. Think of an uncompressed guitar or drum as a boxer pulling his punch back, not hurting the opponent as much as he could. Compressed guitar or drum sound is a boxer following thru on his punch...resulting in a devastating blow. This is not the definition of compression, but it is a quality it can bring to music when used a certain way. If you can combine tasteful and effective studio magic with masterfully played music, you can get results like what you hear in Gojira. Finally, part of the drive and power comes from the simplicity of the guitar riffs. No, they aren't the most easy things to play on guitar. However, their is a certain simplicity and to-the-point attitude in the riffs. If the notes are coming at you really fast, they are the same notes repeated so that listener focus can be directed to the rhythym/beat. Without having the riffs meandering all around like a mini guitar solo, they achieve a clearer direction that is just perfectly pushed by Mario's drumming.
That's awesome you gentlemen were there. It was the greatest show of my life, came from Amarillo, TX with 3 others for the show and to hang in Vegas a few days!! Thank you gentlemen for covering this style of music!!
Just got to see them for the first time last night. They closed with this song. Gave me goosebumps the whole time. This and "Pray" from Magma are my 2 favorites from that album. I was the only one in our group of 4 that had any knowledge of their music prior to the show and everyone else was all "Goji-who? Do we really need to see them?" "Yes, yes you do!" was my response. At the end of the show EVERYONE said how good they sounded and that they were better than anticipated. I've really got to see them in a smaller setting and for longer than 35 minutes next time. I like you.
That’s the first song that got me into Gojira. Love it
Another song that would be really interesting is "Polyphia - G.O.A.T."
Hell yeah
100% on board. That would make an amazing video!
This ^
absolutely agreed
They'd fall in love with the rhythmic riffs, killer licks, and heavy groove.
New Levels New Devils is on a different level.
Hell yeah! This song was long overdue! 🤘🏻
I'm an old-school metal head (40) and I do always recommend this band to my students (some)...!!!
Your a badass teacher then
Death is king!
By far one of the greatest drummers of all time
Agreed. I consider Gojira's Mario Duplantier and Meshuggah's Tomas Haake to be the greatest drummers of all time.
Absolutely! And especially in metal, one of the best metal drummers today
@@jesswise8680 what about aaron Kitcher?
@@plazmamasta193 I’m not a big fan of constant blast beats, but it not easy to play at that speed at all, and he does make it look easy so I’ll give him that
You guys are genuine. Simple as that. Enjoy the concert boys!!!
Enjoy Gojira concert lads! One of the best live bands ever! Also - please react to Devin Townsend - Deadhead (Royal Albert Hall) 🤘🤘
Thanks to you guys my life is basically divided into two sections.
1. Before knowing Gojira
2. Discovering Gojira

Congrats on now being WOKE
You have to review Oroborus ... such a masterpiece by Gojira
+1

Agreed! Great song!
"Remembrance" by gojira is an amazing groovy/trance song

Kyuss - Gardenia
King Crimson - Starless - In the court of the Crimson King
Neil Young - Cortez the Killer
Pantera - I'm broken (too much Gojira and just one Pantera's theme)
Sadly they won't listen to Pantera because of all the "whitepower" stuff with Phil...
Ooh Whitewater, Demon Cleaner, One Inch Man, Green Machine, and Supa Scoopa and Mighty Scoop are great Kyuss tracks for them to check out as well.
Clearly you guys don't know much about Pantera then...
I love the fact George and Ryan have constant stinkface when the song is playing
Such a good tune, but still no Gift of Guilt reaction! Missing out guys, absolute masterpiece.
A certain live version
K9 Rootless this man knows!
@@dudee499 Both studio and Brixton Academy are some of the best shit to come out in the metal genre in years.
George has already listen to that song
Excellent video as always! Thanks for being free-thinkers and inspiring others to be the same.
Gojira - Gift of Guilt gentlemen, that's all I have to say.
Gojira are so fantastically unique, they are kinda a totally new form of melodic death metal with a very heavy progressive eye. I got to see them perform the entire from Mars to Sirius album and it was life changing, they are artists that have reached a level few ever do tool opeth porcupine tree and maybe insomnium are the only bands I would put on the same plateau.
I'm one of those people who found Gojira through you guys. Now they're one of my favourite bands!
When it comes to drumming, you have to consider, is it a live recording, or studio recorded. There are several factors when getting a specific tone out of your drums:
-Type of drum(shell material)
-Size of the drum( circumference)
- Size of the drumstick
- Type Of drum heads used
- How you Mic the drums
- The player, of course..
Power Trip - Divine Apprehension
Power Trip - Hornet’s Nest
Power Trip - Crucifixation
The saga continues...and also yes on Gojira!!!
Swing of the ax has to 1st above all!!! That song is the hook!
Chimaira - Power Trip
Gojira - Where dragons dwell next bros
...Except it's gotta be the live video version of that song that Gojira published on their UA-cam channel. So brutal, but so artistic at the same time.
joe6428856 Yes! Hellfest 2013!
Someone make this man a shirt that says “already” 😂
Mario is an amazing drummer with an amazing set. He does drum his own way as well.
Gojira - Where Dragons Dwell (live from Hellfest 2013)
Ryan / George, That power comes with the drums, bass and guitars playing on the same beats. That gives it that PUNCH.
Watching live how Gojira creates those sounds and riffs on their guitars is just as entertaining as listening to the music
Pantera-The Sleep would be a great choice. Not only does it have groove but the drums are the shit.
Matt Curless dont forget about the solo. arguably one of the best ever.
Sadly they won't listen to any Pantera song anymore... I've tried so long and they're missing out big time. Pantera is one of the greats! > the big four
That came up on Pandora yesterday. Forgot how good that song is. Took me right back to high school. \m/
Mario also uses one inch longer sticks then the standard length.
F**king Drumkit 10,000 :D :D You guys are killing me! Thanks for all the vids so far, looking forward to more!
Architects - Doomsday
Pllleeeeeaaase!!!!
Yes please. Totally new genre for them as well.
Agalloch - In the Shadow of Our Pale Companion!!! Please!
or Not Unlike the Waves! That's my favorite song by them.
First some black metal with teeth. Emperor or ihsahn's solo stuff. Or darkthrone. Getting older is great with darkthrone in your life: it means you've had the chance to listen to more darkthrone. Just like maiden...
INTO THE PAINTED GREY
A freakin masterpiece of music. Its sad most in the metal community dont appreciate this band
@@sunilshivanand2008 They are very appreciated by everyone who knows them
Please post an in depth review of seeing them live.
Great set.
Architects - Gone with the Wind
August Burns Red - Meddler
Protest the Hero - Dunsel
August Burns Red - Beauty In Tragedy
Bloodmeat or Sequoia Throne would be a better reaction
Solid list
I didn't know about this band , I'm going get some of that Gojira stuff , sounds great .
Awesome catalog!

Life changing
Not some. Get all. Cuz all of it is fire.
React to Low Lands....its a little different in terms of tempo but its my favorite Gojira song.
I’d love to see an album reaction. Gojira has great songs that can stand alone, but to really appreciate the music, you gotta experience a full album. Some bands just need that kind of attention.
Lost in Vegas
You want to talk about vocal gymnastics? Bow to the King,
Mike Patton of Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Dead Cross, Lovage, Peeping Tom, Tomahawk, Crudo, The Tango Saloon. Also in league with The Dillinger Escape Plan
Time to get back to opeth! Reverie/ Harlequin forest would be dope!
They've already done Reverie. Didn't much like it if I remember correctly.
Demon of the faaaaaalll
@@audiosmurf No, they did ghost of perdition, not Harlequin forest. They've enjoyed all Opeth exept that one I believe
i think they would actually like a lot of Harlequin Forest. a good opeth song for them.
Wish that had been their first Opeth reaction, I think it's a great introduction to the band, captures all their elements.
Please do some Be’lakor, they really need more appreciation. Countless Skies I would recommend.
Be'lakor is an absolutely dope band
Tool- The Grudge, Parabol/Parabola, Eulogy
Black Sabbath- A National Acrobat, Megalomania, Into the Void
Deep Purple- Burn, Lazy, Space Truckin'
Led Zeppelin- How Many More Times, Bring it on Home, The Ocean
A National Acrobat: yes, yes, this one!
They’ll go crazy over the Parabola transition and the Grudge scream for sure. I think they’d prefer Led Zeppelin’s ‘Dazed and Confused’ over any of those other picks though
You guys got featured on Gojiras Instagram! Keep up the great reactions and positivity!
"They sound like themselves!" That's simultaneously the greatest compliment and the emptiest description of someone's work :D
On the one hand, it says nothing about what they're like; on the other hand, that's what so many artists try to achieve.
I hope you guys document your experience at the concert!
Also, please do Carcass - Heartwork!!!!
napalmfred “Blind Bleeding the Blind” is my favorite Carcass song. Sad it will never be done live according to Bill
The_Jeepers_Turtle thats my fav song too! Sad to hear that bill said that
I would love to listen to you two having a podcast just talking to people like Joe Rogan

You've gotta react to some older GOJIRA songs like Deliverance, Love or Indians. Would be interesting to see if enjoy them, too :P
Can't wait to hear what you guys say about them live. They are a bucket list band for me. Hope you enjoyed.
I love how these brothers are into heavy music. We need more brothers MAKING heavy music too! Shout out to you from Australia! ✊
They will be on tour with Deftones this coming August (2020) in case any of you have never experienced either band live. Gojira doesn't disappoint!
Damn! I didn't know y'all were THAT poppin! Congrats! Nothing but respect! And so cool of Gojira too!

Morbid Angel,Rapture!
It's so cool to see you guys growing so much! Thanks for another great video! 🤘🤘🤘
Thanks mr sound hermit
"Joe's guitar consistently comes a split second after" hadn't picked that out until you said... but yeah that's awesome

You just can't cram that much awesomeness into half an hour.
