I am 74. There were 2 entire years that everyone seemed to be kind and gentle with each other. Accepting of each other. I will always cherish that time. People felt obligated to hide their nastiness 'cause it just wasn't cool, man.
Canned Heat was paid around $3500 for their performance at Woodstock. Later, Geico Insurance Company paid the surving members of the band $11 million dollars for 20 seconds of the song in one of their commercials on American television a few years ago. I have always been a fan of Canned Heat, but after the death of their lead singer (Blind Owl), Alan Wilson, in 1970, the band, lost their unique sound.
As my then 18 year old son said to me a few years ago - "This song's a banger Dad!"
I remember being around 13 and buying this single when it first came out. Played it over and over again and if I got it out now how many scratches would be on it? Loved the flute and also the singer who had this highly unusual voice. Thank you so much for playing it!!!!!
God, I feel old! 🤣
I AM OLD!
I hope you boys had a wonderful Christmas, and that your New Years Eve is even better!
Very cool tune. The flute is an underrated instrument, it definitely can make a song more than it would be without it.
Jethro Tull certainly changed a lot of people's attitudes toward the flute. It featured a lot during 60's and 70's tunes, like Eric Bourdon and war's Spill the wine and magic mountain.
@@barbararees604 I do like Spill the Wine as well. Very good tune!
Loved that song so much that I put it on 3 of my mixed tapes. Although I used to joke about the water tasting like wine - " Eew mate, you gotta get out of the sewer and stop drinking piss." 😅
I've been lucky enough to taste super clean spring water and it tastes nothing like wine.
It always seemed to me that people from the UK, say Happy Christmas, and Americans say Merry Christmas. Thanks guys! Great song and interesting commentary.
Same to you!
Classic. Nearly had a tear in me eye. Another one of theirs I luv is On The Road Again ALTERNATE TAKE. (Sorry 'bout the caps) Thanks, and a great new year to you both
This video shows that the 68 generation was by far the best generation ever, i was born -sadly- decades too late...
7:42 - Look at their heads bobbing. They dig that song.
This is a fantastic song. Probably the only song of theirs that I could name off the top of my head, but once you hear this song, you never unhear it.
Welcome back guys, you don't look like you have packed the Christmas pounds on, well done.
This song was written and recorded originally by a country blues artist named Henry Thomas.
No way
@@TheThamesmen it's absolutely true. Google it.
You can find the Henry Thomas original on You Tube.
I remember this exellent song from my youth. Nowdays you can going out up the country during the holidays, specially if you moved to a big city, and returning to your home grounds during the holidays. Talking about Woodstock, there was also a walk on the moon during that year, and there is also a movie called A walk on the Moon with Diane Lane from 1999.
Great tune a classic. You have to check out Full Boogie and on the road again from Woodstock and Rolling and tumbling from Monterey festival
Happy Christmas And A Merry Hogmanay is my preferred greeting. It seems the correct priority. Be happy for Chrimbo and pissed for New Year.
Stonking track, one of their best in spite of being a hit.
Did you know Incredible String Band were also at Woodstock?
And of course Joni produced one of her early classics because she was heart broken at missing out. Pretty sure there is YT vids of her interview with Dick Cavett at the time
It's always been " Merry " haha.
One of my all time favourites. Saw them live once and they rocked the room with this song. It's truly a classic
"We've lost something...the ability to get lost and go."
They were based in California, but flute player and singer of this song, Alan Wilson was originally from suburban Boston. Sadly, like several 60s icons he died too young at 27.
Was featured by Flo at Progressive insurance in an advert for motorcycle insurance
This is the studio version used as part of the soundtrack to the Woodstock movie. I believe it was the opening song for the movie and was part of their video montage. All the other music in the film was live recordings. Canned Heat did play the song during their performance and that can be see online.
Gentlemen I recently got my stero up and running after20 odd years. My son and law gave me the allman brothers on Viynal
As much as I have pushed for The Whipping Post if you could ever work your magic I believe the two of and Chris would be blown by listening to the whole album in concert mode. For me theses guys are the experts and creators of southern rock
Plus playing the whole album exposed me to the sweet sound of vynl.
On a more serious note was Chis or members of his family affected by the weather if yes please give Chris my best wishes
Also going to reply to your recent email to send my thoughts on why you have to do a lindaRonstndt to push foe a two week smack down of her music if my fat finger don’t erase my work.
A classic from the 60's. One of my personal highlights from Woodstock. Happy Christmas, Joyous Christmas, Merry Christmas, it's all the same really. It's the thought that counts.
You could tell it wasn’t studio version because it was missing my favorite part - that weird sound that starts the song. Still a banger!
Welcome back Alex, George, and Chris Happy New Year to you all, and all The Thamesmen subscribers & fans!
This is a classic song -- so much so that it gets used in television advertisements these days. The internet tells me that it was a top-20 hit on the pop charts in both the United States & the UK in 1969, top-10 in Canada.
I had the Woodstock album playing on my headphones while riding around Europe on my Triumph this past couple of months. And this track just reminded me that I had no real destination or time to be there. Sadly, like with most Triumphs it is now an ex Triumph.
Alex and I both had Triumphs at one time or another. Would probably still get another but I am thinking late 60s or early 70s Bonnie that sits in my garage and drips oil and rarely runs!
Happy Christmas and a Merry New Year! 🎼🎶 🎶 🎶
Same to you!
Just think... These folks are now grandparents and great grandparents.
Canned heat have another track you might like, regarding the protectors of society called, " Sick 'em Pigs ". I did a few supports for Canned Heat. Great guys, had some fun with them. A bit of a shame that " Fito " was the only original member in the lineup.
This put a big smile on my face..🤗 Saw them in Stockholm a long time ago. Shared at that time apartment with the governor's son and could use the governor's private box above the stage - great concert! Didn't Bob Hite appear in the Hy Averback "hippiefilm" I love you Alice B Toklas..?
Hello it’s been a long time since we had the privilege of listening to your show. Checked every couple of days to see what’s happening. I’ve send a number of requests just wondered the chances of having my requests to hit the the air? So much out there I would like to see what others diversify love to know when you will be able to get back in the studio
Bottom line love what you were doing would love to see more diversity. Moby Grapes greatest hits new one Trucks band singing Laya
He plays Duane’s slide for Laya
Classic stuff, and a definite Summertime road trip playlist song. Great trip down memory lane, guys.
Thanks for listening
I'm not even religious and I still say Merry Christmas....it really shouldn't piss anyone off. Happy New Year you two 'idiots'.😉
NB: I remember this song well from my adolescence....that was definitely the studio version.
Actually this a direct cover of a 1928 song by Henry Thomas called Bull-Doze Blues refit with new lyrics. Instead of a flute he played an old pan-flute like instrument call Quills. Both are great songs.
That would have made a good bonus track
Merry Christmas lads, and Happy New Year! 😊 🎉
And to you. Thank you
😀👍🍀🥂
They went up to the country, but they didn't eat any peaches. What's up with that?
The peaches weren't free
I have a Kia Rio yo can have... trade for George's Oldsmobile. Just joking...🤪
8.00min of unnecessary waffle before the Song was played. Stay on subject and I might consider watching more. You sound like a couple of Radio presenters.
Welcome to the world of Thamesmen! In the description we do put chapter markers in case useful.
