Frampton's guitar sound is so pure. It just rings differently, at least for me....I can recognize it every time. I adore all his solo albums and have seen him playing on his last few tours. His solo records leading up to Comes Alive are just so great....as you said.."It's a VIBE". He's brilliant. He's magical.
The bonus clip was one for the ages - literally! Peter let the musical genius of Soundgarden and Cornell transport him back 45 years. His talent, smile and mannerisms are exactly like the Midnight Special appearance. What a treat!!!
As good as that performance is, the performance of "Do You Feel Like We Do" captured on the "Frampton Comes Alive!" album is even better! If you don't have that one in your music collection already, do yourself a favor and get it! The footage from a few years back of the "Black Hole Sun" cover was nice too, by the way. I played the Comes Alive 8 track so many times in my 68 Chevy wagon I wore it out. So much great music at the time to play on those warm summer nights with the windows open and cruising down the road. Wish I could go back in time.
GOOD NEWS❗❗ Frampton is on tour again. He performs live in Windsor Ontario Canada this weekend March 16th 2024 and then throughout the USA afterwards. You have never seen heard a guitarist / musician like Frampton before. He's already in his 70's so this may be a last opportunity to go and see him in concert. Don't miss it. I saw him live in Denver in 2011 and it was THE highlight for me of living in the USA during the five years.
Looks totally comfortable on stage. The talk box is surprisingly simple. A hose comes from the back of the speaker box to the mic. He puts it into his mouth and then changes his mouth shape. The microphone picks up the tinny sound of the guitar, altered by the shape of the mouth, as well as by the delay between the mic on the guitar amp vs the mic on the mouth end of the hose which gives additional phasing effects.
I was 20 years old in 1975, and remember Peter Frampton well, and I had his "Frampton Comes Alive" live album too. But it struck me when you said that his guitar speaks, and it reminded me of a mate back then who actually said to me, "have you heard the talking guitar?" and when I asked who he meant, he said Peter Frampton. It was great to see what he is like more recently as I haven't seen him play in many years. Great memories.
Saw him in November here in Austin. He put on a fabulous show, and you could still see the same expressions on his face when he played as in the early days. Hoping he fights his disease and can continue to tour. He's suffering from inclusion body myositis (IBM), a progressive muscle disorder. He and his band played the whole show seated. But they were still rockin!
That was fantastic. I didn't know how good a guitar player he was, even tho I was there in the 70's. The song "Baby I love your way" was full of the mouth box effect, big hit for him. Cheers you donkeys haha

I never owned a Peter Frampton Album, but a friend had the Farmpton Comes Alive album, and my 13th birthday was coming up so I asked my parents if I could get the album as my birthday present. Sadly, (well, not sadly, I still appreciate them) but my parents bought me Arrival by ABBA. Not quite what I was looking for, but it has some qualities. George, how lucky were you to be in the crowd for that performance ... that is bucket list stuff. I'm really jealous.

He is the guitarist on many of the top selling albums including Bowie. He did session recording with other artists, including: George Harrison, Harry Nilsson, Jerry Lee Lewis, and John Entwistle's Whistle Rymes … He is amazing! Frampton week??? The version at the oakland coliseum is even better..25 minutes of pure heaven! Bob Mayo makes his Fender Rhodes sing..and Frampton on the Gibson Les Paul! Frampton plays drums as well!
I saw Peter Frampton Live in Perth in 1977. It was my first concert and I was 14. I was right up the front of the stage and I remember him using the voice box. It was awesome.
Glad to hear that he is a nice guy outside of the music. You hear so much about artists being really self-centered jerks outside of their great music from people who have met them. I personally think this episode should have been titled "The Thamesmen Come Alive". You guys both got 5%??? Who did you give this poll to? I had almost forgotten about the "verbalization" parts. Not my favorite thing, but very different and I imagine takes a ton of skill to pull off live. Frampton is clearly having fun with the performance and that's probably a big part of why it is so good. I really love lyrical guitar playing, so that bonus track really got me. Great stuff. And Frampton clearly still loves what he does. That had to be a treat to be there for that George.
Occasionally, I have heard the Frampton Comes Alive version of Do You Feel Like We Do on either FM or SiriusXM radio when driving. Sometimes I'd arrive at my destination and the song would still be playing on the radio. Whenever that happened I felt compelled to listen to the song until its conclusion. It is such a gripping performance that you don't want to tear yourself away from it until the final note.
i remember when i bought this album back in the day, it was so new, so amazing to hear a guitar talking, almost 50 yrs later it is still amazing people, thats what you call good music

And, icing on the cake, I was invited to do some design work on his house he was building in Utah. But, I was in the process of moving back to California so I couldn't. I still have the plans and I know where you live, Frampton, lol.

That voice box thing was all the rage back then, a friend of mine was always using it, but had to give it up because apparently it's bad for your teeth. I agree with you George, that Frampton comes alive album is superb, I love it and still have it, waiting to get a decent stereo unit to play it on. Frampton always takes you on a trip to another world, love him. 💜 Two of my favourites from the same album are Show me the way and baby I love your way. Makes all the girls swoon 😅.

Frampton Comes Alive, summer of '76. It was a very popular release to say the least. Was lucky enough to see him Live in the early 90's, not as a solo act but as the lead guitarist for David Bowie on a tour.
I worked on a couple of his concerts in NZ,we weren't allowed to look at him or talk to him or be on the stage when he was on it,his band hated him and only were there for the money,about 1978 he wasn't at his best.

For moi, Peter Frampton is a bit like the Bee Gees. I love quite a bit of their stuff, but struggle with the glossy cheesiness after they become massive. I'm along for the ride with Frampton, especially on his Camel, until Comes Alive - which were it starts to transition & I can't listen to a few of the tracks. I bought a second hand copy of I'm In You for 10c in high school. I struggled with it & haven't played it in decades. I did listen to the debacle that was Sgt Peppers (Bee Gees link!) recently and it was oddly enjoyable so I may hoik it out again. That Talkbox tube thing is what wrecks a lot of his stuff for me - the sound really gets on my nips. His playing looses its rawness in the late 70s and goes all AOR/MOR. His live stuff from the last 20 or so years is excellent - ego under control and commercial pressure off I s'pose. Thanks for posting, may have a Frampton splurge after I finishing doing my tribute listen to my faves from Melanie Safka's catalogue ps I actually much prefer Black Hole Sun of the two tracks, be even better if someone had hidden his Talkbox 😄 I wonder if the tube has 50 years of spit in it....
I'm little bit suspicious of this? The live album that's so popular was regarded with some suspicion too. The album was recorded over a series of gigs and assembled in the studio, not only to create a perfect "single" concert but to "enhance" the quality. I think some of the concerts were recorded on 24 track masters, others on 16. Both systems allow for isolating each instrument. Which also allows you to remove and overdub tracks at will. This was commonly done on so called 'live albums'. Obviously having such master tapes available, you can also "enhance" live performances. - although these were also the days when many bands would hire musicians to play behind the curtain to "achieve the studio sound". Off hand the only band of the era who didn't attempt to hide this were The Who, who used tape machines for the keyboard parts on songs like Baba O'Reilly. They had all been played and recorded by Pete - and the band complained about the way it tied them to playing the song virtually identically every night (machines also broke down). Anyway, the term "live" was used very loosely back in the day - as it is today
I hate to say when reactors could be reacting to a better version, but as mentioned by others, the 'Frampton Comes Alive' version has much more passion and life.

Just think. We watched The Midnight Special every Friday at 11:30pm as teens. Always had top bands live.

Peter Frampton went to high school with David Bowie... Frampton's father was one of Bowie's favorite teachers...
Peter is as tight with his band as Neil Young was with Crazy Horse and Stevie Ray Vaughan was with Double Trouble
