To get a better picture, let's start with the song itself. The melody is virtually a note for note copy of Henry Thomas's 1923 "Bull-Doze Blues", with the flute sitting in for the original quills. It has new lyrics, which were written by Alan Wilson, who is "singing" and playing guitar in the video. Thomas was not given any songwriting credit.
The gentleman "playing" the flute in the video was Bob "the Bear" Hite, who was the lead singer for most Canned Heat songs. He also played guitar and harmonica, but not flute. The actual flautist was noted session saxophonist and Wrecking Crew member Jim Horn.
When this was recorded, it was quite common for bands to be forced to lip-synch for TV appearances. As @Chris Storms surmises below, the band was intentionally making it clear that this wasn't a live performance. Hite's flute acrobatics are obvious, but virtually none of Alan Wilson's lip movements match the lyrics or even sync with the music.

Ooo thank you so much for that detailed background, I’ll have to take a listen to “Bull-Doze Blues”. And if you take a look at the original video you’ll find that the singer does sync with the video - it was down to my method of recording this video that it appears not to. Thanks again 😃🙏

@@ClaireHoldich - I checked out the UA-cam vid, and Wilson is indeed syncing, although it still looks like an obvious, and lackluster, sync.

American Band Stand was a great example of that happening. Some bands refused to play on the show because of being forced to lip-sync. In this video of Canned Heat, you can easily see they were doing just that.

The flutist is Bob (The Bear) Hite, and he did actually play the flute (I saw them numerous times)... The singer, Alan Wilson, died in 1970... Keep in mind, when you are watching rock & rollers playing the flute, that many of them are self-taught, most notably Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull...
Oh, by the way, I like your pudding...

Yeah, TV hates anything live. Last time I was on TV (some 20 years ago?) we refused to pretend over a studio track, so they had us play live (twice) before the start of the program, then they played back the recorded video to the TV audience while we somehow entertained the people in the studio.
One time we were forced to do a playback so we did something similar to Canned Heat here. The singer "sang" into a lint roller; I "played" a stuffed tucano :D pretending it was a trumpet. No wonder they didn't want us on TV very often.

The TRACKING is off. The sound and and video are mismatched . This happened occasionally back in the 1960’s
My mom worked at a TV station. This is a Copy of the original.
Back then, the video and Audio were separate and spliced together. You can see this in old movies some times, especially non-digitized, 1930’s-1950’s .

In the 60's there were two tv programs that featured 60;s music - Hullabaloo and Shindig - where the music was entirely recorded. There are other video recordings from these programs where the musicians clown around.
As youngsters we didn't mind as these programs were the few opportunities to visually see these bands.
On Sundays there was the Ed Sullivan show but the bands played live - Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Doors, etc.

Canned Heat was one of my dad's favorite bands. And it appears to me that this is a case of a band being forced to mime to a prerecorded track. Nirvana did a tv performance where they were forced to perform to a backing track but had live vocals, so they made it very clear that they weren't playing and purposely ruined the vocals by singing in an odd voice and changing the lyrics. I'm thinking that Canned Heat was doing the same kinda thing here. link to the Nirvana vid -----> ua-cam.com/video/_8m6xy9bSFc/v-deo.html

I like the idea that you were honest and said you actually heard it and didn’t all surprised.. most of all these groups were never live. The guy that was singing was the one that played the flute. You can see him in an other video playing it. I know that Jesus Christ gave them all a chance to get saved, I just don’t know which ones did. Is there anyone out there that would like to come back to Jesus? If so do it now., were not promised later. Not only that, we’re not promised later.

lets be honest back in the 60s nothing was live best way to tell if its live or if its Memorex watch the bands drummers (any drummer not just this one) the cymbals never move as well look on the stage floor if there is no amp or microphone cables it is not live. You have to remember this was the 50s thru 70s and a lot of the groups traveled in buses with maybe 3 other groups there was no room for the equipment come to think of it I lost a guitar that way no I think I tossed it out the window on I-75 freeway come to think of it i did throw it out...anyone seeing a guitar on I-75 pick it up and give it a kiss then put it back down it did its done job. Nice little video young lady thank you and peace out!

🤣🤣🤣 Well I was quite familiar with the song. Weird what's going on there! The wiki list of band members, which is quite extensive, shows no flute player until after 2000. The session musician Jim Horn is credited with the flute part on the studio recording of this song. Hard to review flute playing when they're not playing 😂😂
