Mark Farner, if you did not know, started out playing bass, converted to lead guitar...for years he also plays keyboards on many GFR songs, he plays drums (on Black Brass), he plays the harmonica, is a great lead vocalist and also wrote 90% of the GFR songs over their career. At 75 years old today, he is still touring and tearing it up. One of the most talented lead men to ever walk on a stage in the history of live music in any genre.

Glad to see you react to this great, great band. They were huge from the late 1960s through the mid 1970s. They are arguably the greatest live band of all time. I recommend reacting to Heartbreaker live 1974 by them next. They added an organ and were more polished by then. But they still were great live with a ton of energy. Mark Farner is my favorite front man.

Well. Speaking of palindromes (words spelt the same forwards or backwards), the ultimate palindrome song was Bob by ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic, which for sublime comedic effect is done brilliantly as an homage to a famous palindromic star ‘Bob’ Dylan by reproducing his Subterranean Homesick Blues music video. Well worth checking out, or even a reaction if it wouldn’t get blocked.

Grew up with this band. Commonly referred to in the U.S. as "America's Boogie Band". American fans loved them, but the critics hated them. Hard to ignore the fact that all their albums went platinum and were the biggest draw in the U.S. ticket wise in the early 70's. Farner is vastly underrated as a front man but his voice was better than just about anyone at the time. He actually could sing. Even today in his mid 70's, his voice is still very good. The elephant in the room though is why are they not in the rock and roll hall of fame? There is still this critical hatred of this group for some unknown reason as we see many bands get into the hall with far less credentials. It is a real crime they have still been over looked for all these years. That live LP is basically unedited and pressed just as it was played. Their energy was unmatched and to think it all came from just 3 guys. Sold out Shea stadium in New York that no longer exists, faster than the Beatles and that should give you some indication of their appeal with their fans. Hopefully the hall will get it right and give these guys their just dues.

Well........ it didn’t start in the pubs.
From about 1966 there were licensed venues ( nite clubs ) in the big cities, but also unlicensed clubs for all ages.

I remember seeing their name in the UK singles charts in the mid 70s but never heard them till a few years ago. They were huge in the early 70s but got ripped off by their manager. He sued them for everything when they dumped him and he won. They made a come back in around 73 or so but called it a day in 76 or so. Great documentary on their rise and fall on you tube. They should have been rock legends but no one really remembers them now. The guitarist still plays I think.

Their 2 performances at sold out Shea Stadium, is epic. The stadium was visible shaking, and you can see it in the video. Both Mark and Don (drummer) sang lead on their solo hits. One of the great Rock Bands, that didn't get more, due to the fact that their manager too advantage of them in their contract. They were being paid $150.00 per week, even when selling out all their venues. When they broke up, they were penniless, and their manager got all the royalties from their record sales and concerts.

Well, that was a pleasant surprise. How fantastic was that track. 1969, hey? That would make the track 52 or 53 years old. GFR sounded so good for a three-piece, even back then. Imagine how good they would sound now with the technology that guitarists have at their feet, even before their sound hits the mixing desk. They would have sounded so much fatter if they played now. Their drummer also really impressed me: a floor tom, a rack tom, a snare, a kick drum and a few symbols. A small kit but he drained every dribble of juice out of them. Brilliant.
The Small Faces ... did they do Ichigoo Park (or whatever it was called)? And, did some half-good Scottish soccer player saddle up with them for a time (or was that an iteration that formed out of The Faces)? Chris will tell me haha.

"a kick drum and a few symbols." You're thinking of Led Zep and their Zoso symbols surely!
Itchycoo park was indeed the Small Faces, one of the great psych bands from that era. And if you're referring to Rod Stewart, he joined, along with Ronnie Wood, to replace the great Steve Marriott, that's right, it took two of them to replace him! All this and more in the notes for the next video! (Which also references Led Zep!)

  • @sean---the-other-one
    @sean---the-other-one Рік тому +1

    Spectacular.
That’s my first Grand Funk Railroad song I’ve ever heard. I know the band name, but they didn’t really get radio play here and I never sought them out in later years.
You know, we’ve just experienced Ren on the channel a few days ago and that was massively creative, but every time I see an old school band like GFR doing their thing live I just think that bands and artists nowadays that write and record their songs in studios and not in sweaty pubs trying to evoke a reaction from an audience just lose something vital.
This song tonight wasn’t ever going to win lyrical accolades, but that band was totally synced with each other and took the song where it needed to go at each stage. Even to tempo shifts like at the end when they added some speed to give it urgency and energy, that’d the sort of thing that doesn’t really happen naturally in a studio. Producers and engineers are often looking for pristine performances, and even shift the played notes to fit a mechanical precision, or clean up noisy takes, and I think it’s often focusing on the wrong stuff as being important. I love hearing the squeak of a kick drum pedal in songs like Superstition or It’s A Long Way To The Top.
UA-cam has been a great place to keep these old performances alive. Otherwise these sort of clips would have sat rotting in an archive somewhere.
Thanks for the suggestion here Brian. Top performance!

Glad you liked it Sean! These guys were really big for a few years in the US. They backed up Led Zeppelin on a tour of the US and Zep dropped them after a few concerts because they were getting better response from the crowd. They were also known as the loudest Rock band for a few years. The album Closer to Home is a classic, well worth checking out if you have Spotify or an equivalent.

Now that is a band! It's like Classic rock taking a Gatlin gun to today's music and letting them know it's just plain garbage!! What a performance! You don't see that anymore. I am so glad I was born in this era. Absolutely blown away!

This is a cover originally written by Eric Burden and performed by The Animals. Grand Funk Railroad’s version BY FAR is better than the original. Maybe I’m biased because they’re my FAVORITE band of all time. Hell, my picture on UA-cam is of Mark Farner and myself from 2012. When I was in my high school video class I annoyed everyone with my videos because most of them involved Grand Funk Railroad in some form or another. You guys should react to my favorite GFR song called I Come Tumblin’.

Glad to see you have turned to North America. Grand Funk is a great rock band. Great video. The scary part is in my opinion this particular song would barely be in their top five for me. That’s not a knock on this track just stating their are more great tracks out there that are worth listening.
