Before pitch correction software, singers had to live or die in real time on stage. Steve Perry was the man, the voice--pitch perfect--nothing faked. Faking wasn't possible in those days (not that Steve ever needed to); this live recording, among myriad others of Journey, reveal a band without sequencers, triggers, computer aided blah blah blah--real music from a better vanished time.
Neal Schon is NOT an underrated guitar player to the people who know. The ones who know have seen his brilliance and versatility for many years. We love you Neal, Keep rockin brother!!!!
LOVE STEVE PERRY!!! He gives so much of himself in his performances! Nobody can touch his Emotional Delivery like he really is in the Moment! Authentic Feeling! Thank you !
What a shame these historical moments did not get the royal recording treatment. A shame that we have not seen more pro-released Live show DVD's over the years either. I think we all are collectively shaking our heads over that lack of pro-level live concert videos.
No dislikes yet i see....i'm not surprised! Steve Perry's vocal talent is awesome.I've never heard anyone sing note for note perfect live the way he does...i could watch him all day...yum!!!
*WHEW!* Steve's hair movement at minute 2:20!!! This man is gorgeous!!! (A phenomenal voice, too! *wink*) Also, Neal is kickin' butt on the guitar as per usual, but Steve Smith is KILLIN' IT on the drums!!! Love this!
Raw, unmixed (thats why the vox are so loud) sound board recording with no compression, reverb or effects of any kind plus a little distortion and yet it sounds amazing. You hear the real close up power of Steve Perry with no buffer. I cant think of another band that sounds this amazing on such a crappy mix... Maybe the Eagles back in the day but that is about it.
I live Neal's style. Easily my favorite guitar player because of his technique. Been listening to these guys since I was 6. I listen to them everyday and they NEVER get old. The party's not over until Steve Perry sings one last time!
Aunque ya hayan pasado muchos años ,de este stevy perry ,es muy lindo escucharlo una y otra vez y poder verlo Gracias por estos videos , 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏
Absolutely marvelous performance! One of my all time favorite songs... LIVE! At their peek, right around that time between Captured and the Escape! Interesting there's a white violin next to one of Steve Smith's kick drums, they all look cool, I love Steve Perry's leather jacket and white music shirt! Love this, thank you for sharing it!
Can't say enough about this band that burst on the scene back in the late 70's that has the "Voice", a genius that plays guitar, and the rest that are accomplished master musicians, they are an extension of each other. A truly great band, their music will continue to touch hearts forever and has put its stamp on the annals of time.
This might be a very rare video. Came out in 1981(?) wow. This sound is off the Capture album. Also too, John Caine is playing keyboards. Might be the first w/o Gregg Rollie too.
You are quite right. As a trained vocalist myself, I understand the toll on one's voice that touring as Journey did all those years will have! I am only saying that there are many out there who think if Perry returned today, he would sound like he did back in 1980...and that is just not realistic at all. I do not dispute your assertion about Perry at this point in his career! :-)
The one from Tokyo 1981 is WAY better. Look it up. Faster tempo, Valory on slap bass intro. Lots of Perry improv. And Neil’s solo was tighter. MY FAVORITE OF HIS EVER. They were all killing it. This one isn’t even close.
I'd forgotten how much I liked that performance. Everyone seemed really happy and just enjoying the hell out of playing. Great stuff, thanks for the reminder! I've had this on VHS for years but haven't watched it in a very long time.
He is sooo delicios! That dam_ed"STEVE R. PERRY"!My baby! KL dat sht... make an Evangelist cry!Rock tht muzk Neil!! Your "MADD"! WOW!! Stevies girl,VELVET💖
@NoSteveNoPoint LOL Oops.. read somewhere was the sound system which was surprising. Journey traveled with their own everything. Just goes to shows, no matter how bad the recording is, still able to sing. The real deal can sing without & still pull it off. TY, for clarifyin for me..
Vote for Journey with Steve Perry, one of 19 nominees on www.rockhall.com/vote, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2017. Vote once a day for up to 5 artists until December 5th, 5 of the 19 will be inducted. Love this and thank you for voting!
I "AGREE" TO BRONZE!!"HELL" "YA"!!-STEVE&NELL& JOURNEY, always play the "PERFECT "HIGH" "NOTE", with out no doubt!!,"THEY" Were True Too "THEIR" "ABILITY'S" Not today can you Find Anyone That would be able to "SING" HIS "HIGH" "TONE",But it "TOOK" in 2009, ARNEL P, to come close to SING LIKE "STEVE"PERRY"!! "I"LOVE ARNEL VOICE TOO."He's MADE SOME "AWESOME" SONGS TO LOVE!!BUT "YES" "ARNEL" LOVE'S -STEVE P.-That last a life time.
Where is Greg Rollie? Small stage, not a big venue- Steve Smith is there so it’s 1980? The song info said Bammies 1980,,, they hadn’t started making any big dollars.
Well said Brett.
Still got the chops
That"'s correct brett
@@yanitzavelasquez5453 was is and ALWAYS will be the voice of JOURNEY
Love the Neal Peart quote in there ..."from a better vanished time" - Red Barchetta.
Neal Schon is NOT an underrated guitar player to the people who know. The ones who know have seen his brilliance and versatility for many years. We love you Neal, Keep rockin brother!!!!
If u know u know
3:31 Neal’s solo with the variation on the intro riff is bad ass. He is tearing it up right here.🔥🎸
He's like the best of his generation. So fucking talented it sick. Cheers to Mr Neal Schon! Journey's music is timeless. Happy 2024!
Right surprised the guitars were not smoking 😂🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Steve Perry is the voice of Journey. Irreplaceable. Best vocalist ever. Love you, Steve Perry.
THERE IS ONLY ONE STEVE PERRY. 'nuff said
Enough said !!
You damned right.👊🏻🤟🏻
Okay. If you can find the band Departure on here take a listen. They are a journey tribute band and kick it
And Sam too
Neal Schon's guitar skills are so underrated by many. The man is unstoppable.
The Power of Perry...there is no denying the greatness - best ever!!
LOVE STEVE PERRY!!! He gives so much of himself in his performances! Nobody can touch his Emotional Delivery like he really is in the Moment! Authentic Feeling! Thank you !
Wow....Steve's vocals r crazy good. The best concert I ever went to was to see "Journey". I love Steve's Album "Traces". Never get tired of his voice!
What a shame these historical moments did not get the royal recording treatment. A shame that we have not seen more pro-released Live show DVD's over the years either. I think we all are collectively shaking our heads over that lack of pro-level live concert videos.
just apreciatte it was recorded.
Man, I remember when They looked like this....saw em....they Ripped the place....great to be old haha
tedro1962 fucking A😃!
They sure did🎉🎉🎉🎉
No dislikes yet i see....i'm not surprised! Steve Perry's vocal talent is awesome.I've never heard anyone sing note for note perfect live the way he does...i could watch him all day...yum!!!
Wow...Schon's on fire on this one...
Agreed. I love his style and this guitar!
Awesome performances by Steve and Neal. What an awesome combo they were.
You can't hide anything with that extremely hot mic in the mix. Perry nails it, of course. Love it!
Just shows how amazingly talented they were especially Steve and Neal tho I adore Steve any which way haha
GREATEST VOCALIST OF ALL TIME - Steve Perry! Hello from Melbourne, Australia!
Love this!
The hair! Almost looks like slow motion! The Voice!
@@gram5751 The 'ethereal' hair movement is due to many subtle layers. Gorgeous! 😍
This is when Schon ruled, pre Sustainer and without tons of gain and delay. They were amazing.
Saw Journey live in 1984. Steve Perry's voice wrecked my ears. I think I still have permanent hearing loss from that night. Good times!!
Had to be latter 1983. Frontiers tour didn't finish in 1984.
Blasting away every other band!
great song ...great rockin song.steve is the man.Summer of 81,82 everyone love jounery. Miss singers like that.
Total greatness. I'm hopelessly in love with this song..
Always....forever...only Steve Perry!
Anybody got a flux capacitor cuz I gotta go back in time and catch these cats when they slayed .
blew up my last interociter by overdriving the V21 I'm afraid.
There is nobody else on earth who can sing this song note for note like Steve Perry could.
Steve dancing back there, adorable.
The good old days when Journey was Journey
Nobody can ever match Steve Perry vocals in live concerts his voice is so pitch perfect everytime truely amazing
Neal is one the only guitarists that could make EVH scratch his head and say "how does he do that?"
I am not sure why Neil Schon is so under rated. I get bored with Eddies' show boating.
Allan Holdsworth was another.
I live Neal's style. Easily my favorite guitar player because of his technique. Been listening to these guys since I was 6. I listen to them everyday and they NEVER get old. The party's not over until Steve Perry sings one last time!
Steve should get a band and tour solo. I'd pay top dollar to see him sing one last time no matter how bad his voice aged.
Neal IS a beast on his guitars!!💖
awsome song
Aunque ya hayan pasado muchos años ,de este stevy perry ,es muy lindo escucharlo una y otra vez y poder verlo Gracias por estos videos , 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏 👏
Great song sung by an even greater singer. Rock bands now cant touch this kind of improve and feel.
This performance looks like it was just thrown together at the last minute which makes it even more beautiful and amazing!
Bye bye baby! Just magic
Can't say enough about this band that burst on the scene back in the late 70's that has the "Voice", a genius that plays guitar, and the rest that are accomplished master musicians, they are an extension of each other. Love your beautiful shiny hair.
Sounds amazing live true stars ✨
I ran a spot light at a early Journey show. I knew they were destined to have Stanley Mouse, make some art work for them.
This is one of the best guitar solo's solo's ever.
And Neil, went in that dojo in Nippon...
He showed respect.
..played with no shoes.
Always loved this song, and that VOICE, wow!! Steve Perry is/was a God of voice IMHO.
This might be a very rare video. Came out in 1981(?) wow. This sound is off the Capture album. Also too, John Caine is playing keyboards. Might be the first w/o Gregg Rollie too.
Wow - rare raw untouched and he is perfect. Love it!
Neal Schon carries this act! He's pure awesomeness! I wonder if he has to lubricate his fingers and strings? His guitar speaks straight to my heart.
I could watch Steve Smith's drumming for hours.
too bad the camera man didn't zoom in on Steve during some of his vocals. . STEVE PERRY is the man!
Neal kicks so much ass on the solo! A Strat with the original Floyd Rose tremolo...killer!
This is REALLLLLLLLL MUSIC!!!!!!!!! GO GUYS LOVE YA STEVE ALWAYS MY BABY
Awesome, Love Steve Perry and Journey!
Pierre
Raw and bad ass... that jammed.
GOOD LORD! Just AMAZING! Miss me some journey
The one from Tokyo 1981 is WAY better. Look it up. Faster tempo, Valory on slap bass intro. Lots of Perry improv. And Neil’s solo was tighter. MY FAVORITE OF HIS EVER. They were all killing it. This one isn’t even close.
but he wears a jacket here
and he didnt sing the flip part (1:34) in that version
This is fire !
I'd forgotten how much I liked that performance. Everyone seemed really happy and just enjoying the hell out of playing. Great stuff, thanks for the reminder! I've had this on VHS for years but haven't watched it in a very long time.

My favorite journey song! But they didn't play it when I saw them this past June

I’m curious as to who played the keys on the studio version and this particular live version.

the only band that exsits to me.
gotta learn that riff on my guitar
To me when Neal Schon play a Fender Stratocaster ( not another brand strat body style) he just fly like Yngwie.🎸
Shiny hair....
Where is Greg Rollie? Small stage, not a big venue- Steve Smith is there so it’s 1980? The song info said Bammies 1980,,, they hadn’t started making any big dollars.
Neil said, "Look mom no shoes."
Wow
