So Alexi just walked out of the booth and hung around the people that couldn't get an autograph and just talked a bit, he was a real chill dude!
That's good that you got to meet him. I'm from a small town an hour away from Saskatoon and in 2006 I went to a show at the Odeon - now the Coors Event Centre - (Unholy Alliance Tour) it was an off date so slayer wasn't going by to be playing but Lamb of God was headlining. I was 13 years old and it was my first metal concert and I was a bigger fan of COB who were supposed to be playing. We get to the venue and there was a sign on the door that read "Children of Bodom will not on the bill tonight". I was crushed! But it was still an awesome concert. I did have the pleasure of getting to see Bodom at Prairieland Park but I'm not sure what year it would've been. Maybe 2009 or 2010? Very grateful to have seen Alexi perform before he passed.

Alexi Laiho was the greatest frontman of all time, period. His guitar skill alone was legendary, but the fact that he not only sang, but actually did screams and growls during the most difficult sections of their songs makes him the absolute GOAT. The greatest of all time. Rest in peace Alexi you fucking legend, and great job for your effort, Ola.
I have to admit as a 40yr old who just started trying to play guitar because of your videos, these Ola learns it videos give me hope that one day Ill be 1/10 as good as your are. Please keep doing these.
Dude - what a fantastic attempt, and you deserve alot of credit for nailing as much as you did - I agree completely, no matter where you start with bodom you are starting at extremely hard stuff - I look forward to your completed version. Your video really reminded me how lucky I was to see Alexi 3 times live, and how special a human he was. Much respect
That's why when people say best guitarists it's kind of a dumb phrase. Every guitarist has his own personal set of skills he can be proud of provided that he practices everyday.
It's fascinating, when you slow down the tracks and really listen to it section by section, Alexi's classical guitar training really shows through. Everything is so clean and structured beautifully like a classical composition from the 1500s. Great playing as always Ola!
During this age of infinite guitar heroes and infinite takes, I admire the humility you have to post a video of you struggling and going through the learning process. Still, you are a good player and the song came together just fine in the end. Very pleasant watch!
Honestly, I think this is my favorite Ola series. Really cool seeing the process of learning awesome music we all love. edit- ok I just finished, that was awesome. RIP Alexi. Seriously Ola, these covers are a blast to watch. More please! :)
I tried doing this 10years ago, with a few songs on this album which i LOVE to this day. I listened to it so many times on my iPOD and thought, yeah i can play that, i can work out that part etc .. Once i finally sat down to work it all out I realised *real quick* Alexi's ability *seriously* outweighed my talent !
What is crazy is how easy Alexi made it seem when he would play. Watching you trying to learn every little nuance he puts into a song made me feel exhausted lol. Great job man, you are a great guitarist. He lived in the stratosphere where most only dream of getting to. It was like breathing for him
I tried learning a couple of songs a few years ago. Some of it really is very hard and honestly quite progressive and unique in its style. Children of Bodom is one of the greatest modern metal bands imo, saw them live 4 times and the energy was always crazy.
Holy smokes! Nailed it! Alexi was such a shredder, cool to hear my favourite UA-cam star play my favourite band! I enjoyed every second. Loved it 10/10

Great video, I love the earlier Children of Bodom songs! Pretty straight forward overall but also unique in a way. Very impressive that you were able to learn everything so fast, Ola - your version sounds great!
Say what you want about the man or the band's last few albums - Laiho was a damn beast on the guitar. CoB were one of my entry-level metal bands, both in listening and in playing. Their riffs had an enormous effect on my style and my further musical endeavours. RIP Alexi, hope you're somewhere nice.
Nice to see you playing a song written by one of my favourite guitarists of all time. Alexi was a beast! Next song to learn, maybe something from Wintersun? :D
It's so good to watch Ola suffer. :) Alexi was freaking next level and you can only realize it from all the details he put in his playing. Every riff has like 100 variations, different endings, whammy bar here and there and shit like this :D
This song was one of the first songs I ever learnt on guitar. Yeah, you can say I jumped off the deep end I know. I remember it took me so long to learn but I would practice it for 6 hours a day and I was highly motivated to play it cleanly. What I remember the most about learning was the picking hand. I would get so sore quickly. Alexi’s had an amazing picking hand and he would rarely use alternative picking. 99% of his playing was all down picking. It really groomed my picking hand to have a strong picking attack with clarity and overall a solid base of stamina. The dude was severely underrated as a musician. You got to remember he played all this music while being the vocalist.
I just love this song, and Ola - your verbal emotions are wonderfully humorous. "ugh! ahh! uhh!" all while nailing this for the most part. very cool to share with us. thanks for the production! great camera angles. I also appreciate the logic tips.
You can watch Alexi playing the song in emg tv, I guess it can help you a little with the solo and song in general. Great job by the way man!! I really wanna watch you try and learn summoning redemption from Morbid Angel!
One of all time favorite bands from my hometown. Funny enough this is one of the songs I also just started learning a while back. Even funnier is that you struggled with pretty much the same things as I did. Really like your video(s), the genuine reactions, the way actually you start leaning from basics and not editing to show you are something wilder than you actually are. Honest shit and I dig it! Alexi was a maniac doing what ever he wanted with a guitar.
Wildchild was a beast, Still remember when Bodom first came out or at least when Tokyo Warhearts was new. My friend and I practiced those lead sections for weeks🤘🤘
On the last SWOLA, a fan asked if Ola played his intros live. I guess we know now. You learned and played an entire song on camera dude. Alexi is smiling down on you.
Hey, Ola! FYI any Ola learns video is an instant save to favourites - your channel means a lot to many metal guitarists, but I think these videos in particular are the creme de la creme.
After about 15 years of trying to nail this sound, I finally got it. Big part of the sound is the speaker choice and the guitar electronics. I can go further in detail if you like.
@@skelurgh Sure thing! Getting the MM-04 or the JE-1000 booster is really important. The EMG ALX set will also work pretty well but it's not as close as the other options. For the pickup you will want either the Jackson J50BC pickup or the EMG H2. I actually prefer the H2 as I couldn't hear much difference and it was not as prone to feedback. I have the Perfect Connection preamp that he used but other amps will get you in the ball park. The thing to keep in mind is if your amp is naturally more mid range focused, you would do well with the G12T75 speakers from celestion. If it's a more modern amp such as the Marshall JVM that he used in the later part of his career, then the celestion vintage 30 would be the way to go. Sorry for the long read. If you have more questions, let me know.

I've always liked COBs first three albums most but all of their stuff is good. Hatebreeder and Follow the Reaper are masterpieces imo, even tho the later stuff is way more riffy and heavy, the songs on hatebreeder and follow the reaper are genius. And yes, there is different guitar lines panned left and right in most or all their stuff I think.
I remember trying to figure out the main part for Silent Night Bodom Night on guitar by ear and realizing that to get that awesome sound that I heard on the album there needed to be two guitars.
@@uturkaos kinda apples and oranges but I don't even like the Beatles much so I definitely agree lol. Subjectivity aside, they are objectively better, and tighter musicians than the Beatles by a long shot.

This was truly epic to watch. We all see inspirations that lead us to a guitar & watching Ola attempting this brings home how insane Alexi’s playing was, but also how adept Ola is too to virtually nailing it.
Great work Ola! Riffs and solos in just one hour by ear! I'm still struggling with the solo since two weeks.. idea for next Coffee with Ola -> Daniel Freyberg (Children of Bodom/Bodom After Midnight)
Ive been listening to them for a solid few years now. Alexi was a huge inspiration in how i play guitar. His music is legendary. So much emotion and feel in his tone, vocals, riffs. I used to chill out questing in WoW getting into this album and Hatebreeder. /,,/ Good times man. R.I.P Alexi
If you haven't already, you should check out the other band he did with Roope called Sinergy, very power metal but the riffs and solos are some of Alexi's best work. Also, most excellent effort Ola! 🤘
Roope was a beast of a player, their solos on Midnight Madness were killer. And his work with Stone was top notch. Couldn't ask for a better pair in a band, either Sinergy or Bodom.
Solid effort especially on that solo! This is definitely the best way to learn material because you’re not only learning the song you want to learn, but you’re giving your ear a real workout which will help you with just about everything. ADYD has several good solos on it. ADYD and Trashed, Lost & Strungout were always the highlights on that album for me. I just love how he alternates between triplet and 16th note runs.
The moment I saw the title, I was already excited but knew you would have to do another song later because like you said, this song is less technical. But it is fun. Kind of feel like you need to buy Alexi's signature guitar just to complete your collection.
For me learning cob’s songs its like playing dark souls thats the only way i can put it. All the frustration and anger but then when u finally make it to the end its such a great feeling . Alexi we miss you😢
Learning it that well by ear in just about an hour is insane! Alexi was an absolute beast, and you killed that. Inspiring me to try to start learning hard songs again.

@@DeadRingerMachine yeah, the little two-string barre with the ringfinger(*) can sound sloppy real quick
(*at least thats how I played it)
also I tend to miss the exact tact sometimes, it really sounds easier than it is lol
@@randystasi Personally I think it's probably most useful skill as player. It's great feeling when you learn to transcribe your favorite songs by ear and you get it better time by time. Iron Maiden is great stuff to begin as you can learn basic chord progressions, riffs, main melodies, harmonies and solos in same song.
Still blasting CoB every single day
Been my favorite band for years and that’s never gonna change
Alexi Laiho was the greatest frontman of all time, period. His guitar skill alone was legendary, but the fact that he not only sang, but actually did screams and growls during the most difficult sections of their songs makes him the absolute GOAT. The greatest of all time. Rest in peace Alexi you fucking legend, and great job for your effort, Ola.
Makes it even more impressive that alexi used to do vocals along with playing this shit, saw them live years ago and was blown away! Rip to a legend 🤟
This really puts into perspective how incredibly talented Alexi was. RIP.
I have to admit as a 40yr old who just started trying to play guitar because of your videos, these Ola learns it videos give me hope that one day Ill be 1/10 as good as your are. Please keep doing these.
One of the enlightenment songs for the metal music for me.
That was a great tribute to Alexi, maybe you could cover a Black Dahlia Murder song next in tribute to Trevor.
Yes that's what I'm talking about!
Yes, BDM song please!!!
Ah fuck me, you just made me learn Trevor died...
I love this series, watching someone as amazing as Ola struggle learning the same songs that I did makes me feel better about my own guitar playing.
That's why when people say best guitarists it's kind of a dumb phrase. Every guitarist has his own personal set of skills he can be proud of provided that he practices everyday.
That tone you've got is filthy, love love LOVE this song, this was the second Bodom song I ever heard.
Good stuff! show what a beast he was. Talent lost way too young, but what a legacy he left. Respects from Finland
Man Cob is great ! Alexi riffs and solos are awesome! Alexi was such a great musician!
Loved it 10/10
"Thats the thing, they didn't think about me when they wrote this song" 🤣 that line is absolutely hilarious for so many reasons 🤣 😁🤘🏻
Hey Burzum I’m a big fan since I was a kid over 20 years in Darkthrone days and you were an outstanding legend and steal our legend black metal King We love your black metal albums I’ve got pretty much all of them
"But when they wrote the song, obviously, they didn't pay attention to me and my skill.", wise words from a wise man.
What?
@@twerktospec @11:48
You absolute mad man, you just made my fucking day, playing my most favorite song on your guitar.
I assume it's technical, it's hard,but you've done it.
Thank you for playing it, that's amazing!
COB and this album was some of the peak mid 2000s melodic metal (or whatever genre the mad lads were). This was a nostalgia trip.
Hahaha they were certainly mad! I think they're a hybrid of Melodic Death Metal and Power Metal. Melodic Power Death?
Thank you for making this one Ola. Alexi was and will always be a huge inspiration for me, RIP Alexi.
Ola is awesome as ever, he sells himself short in the talent. You're a beast dude!!
Wou! You got it Ola! Greetings from Finland 🇫🇮 jåå de e jätte bra!
Oh hell yeah
Dude! The version of Deadnight Warrior from Tokyo is amazinggggggggggg! That whole live set is nuts! That and Live in Seoul, Korea!
Alexi was such an amazing musician and writer. Insane talent
How about a CoB guitar tone video? It seems like you really nailed it in this one!
After about 15 years of trying to nail this sound, I finally got it. Big part of the sound is the speaker choice and the guitar electronics. I can go further in detail if you like.
Agree a video would be fun AF
@@davepaulson287 Please, if you could i’d be really thankful!
@@davepaulson287 Thank you! I actually already have the EMG h4 set and i have considered buying the booster set. Thank you for the reply, i really appreciate it!
Well done ! Alexi is an amazing player ! When I saw them live i was and still am in awe of how amazingly accurate they could ply live ! They were dead on !
"I'm just going to wing it a little bit, okay?"
My whole music career in one sentence.
I like the honesty in the beginning, typical Ola.
Also very impressed by you being able to pick everything up so fast and replicate it.
RiP Alexi, gone but never forgotten!
If you haven't seen it yet, check out Bodom's live DVD "Chaos Ridden Years". It's such a great show.
Wow, some crazy, mega satysfying ride! Congrats!! Pleasure to watch, listen and learn with you.
RIP Alexi
Great band, in the right mood its better than the beatles
I remember trying to figure out the main part for Silent Night Bodom Night on guitar by ear and realizing that to get that awesome sound that I heard on the album there needed to be two guitars.
@@uturkaos kinda apples and oranges but I don't even like the Beatles much so I definitely agree lol. Subjectivity aside, they are objectively better, and tighter musicians than the Beatles by a long shot.
Tru dat. Alexi Laiho may be my favourite guitarist of all times
I witnessed Alexi Play this song like a boss He then tells us after he finished the song He has a broken arm.🤯 Probably my favorite COB song You sr are a legend -Subbed!
11:40 always fun to see another human being deal with Bodom lol.
Great video Ola! Alexi was an absolute monster when it came to guitar playing and songwriting. Much respect trying to learn this by ear. I remember seeing them live about 12 years ago and their playing blew me away. RIP Alexi.
Learning CoB songs is so much work since they got so many different parts and shit and everytime they got 2 guitars doing something different haha. Great vid.
This was truly epic to watch. We all see inspirations that lead us to a guitar & watching Ola attempting this brings home how insane Alexi’s playing was, but also how adept Ola is too to virtually nailing it.
Great work Ola! Riffs and solos in just one hour by ear! I'm still struggling with the solo since two weeks.. idea for next Coffee with Ola -> Daniel Freyberg (Children of Bodom/Bodom After Midnight)
...and Naildown/Norther. Daniel is hell of a guitar player!
Better yet Latvala or Kuoppala
Ive been listening to them for a solid few years now. Alexi was a huge inspiration in how i play guitar. His music is legendary. So much emotion and feel in his tone, vocals, riffs. May he rest in piece he truly will always be one of the best to ever live in death/melodic death metal 🤘🤘 awesome cover dude!
Are You Dead Yet was the album that got me into them. I still have SOME VHS footage of Living Dead Beat when I saw them in London back in '09(before security spotted me filming and took my camera off me ahah).
I used to chill out questing in WoW getting into this album and Hatebreeder. /,,/ Good times man.
R.I.P Alexi
I miss Alexi. Metal was so badass when he was on the TVs. I remember seeing this video and IMMEDIATELY got hooked.
I don't even like V guitars but I'm constantly wanting to get one of Alexi's models
Dude was such an inspiration
Alex paved the way for many metalheads around the world, it is nice to see you doing a cover of the band.
Great Job Ola! For the next Ola learns you should try an Avenged Sevenfold song maybe Afterlife or Almost Easy
Alexi was a legends, as you are sir! Congrats, loved it!
First! Awesome vid Ola. Love your sense of humor.
Romania here, love your series ola learns. Never try a riff from Children of bodom but i feel it is 10 times more than my skill..
For me learning cob’s songs its like playing dark souls thats the only way i can put it. All the frustration and anger but then when u finally make it to the end its such a great feeling . Alexi we miss you😢
Muito bom ver alguém tão bem sucedido ser tão humilde sobre si mesmo, inspira pra qualquer momento, parabéns!!
Their live album from 1999, Tokyo Warhearts, is Alexi in ferocious shape. I prefer those versions over the actual albums. Guy was a beast.
Learning it that well by ear in just about an hour is insane! Alexi was an absolute beast, and you killed that. Inspiring me to try to start learning hard songs again.
Wow what an interesting concept for a video! Never seen anything like this. Nice thing to watch for every guitarist because this is most of the time what its like :)
Crushing it as always Ola, great job.
I love that you really show the process of learning the song. Its not some "fast track" polished version with no mistakes.
Thanks for keeping it real.
