Taking on this beast of a song!
Ssssshhhhhhiiiieeeeeet.
Do revolution is my name
Eeeeeeeee🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
@@thatcherhunter1695 that one I have played though so wouldn't be a real Ola Learns video
This makes me miss playing guitar 😢 want to get back into it but I can't afford shit to get back into it 😭 was sick of using shit equipment that just put me off 😂
Ola, in 2000 I had the honor of meeting Dime and the guys backstage in Portland Oregon. I got to hang out with him and the guys (minus Phil) drank beers and bullshitted about music and guitar. I had just turned 18. I told Dime how he was the reason I wanted to pick a guitar up and that he was my hero and all that, he could tell I was jacked to meet him. Also told him Kerry king and zakk were my other inspirations. After the meet and greet was ending he invited me too the show the next day in Seattle because kerry was gonna come out and play a few songs. Long story short he put me +3 on the guest list and I took a few close buddies up and we hung out with PanterA and Kerry king after show. It was a wet dream come true lol. Afterwards Dime pulled me into the hallway with his head of security and gave me his business card and told me whenever they were around to call me up and we’d do it again. I get choked up thinking about it man. One of the best experiences of my life. Dude was and is a legend. CFH!
Dude that's what I'm talking about!
What a badass story thanks for sharing.
Very cool story, thanks for sharing, the legacy Dime left is hard to grasp but hearing stories like this, what a total legend!
Take care and be well!
There is always so many positive stories about Dime! Thanks for sharing that. /,,/
That’s is the essence of Dime right there. Was just a beast of a guitar player and a better dude all around. We all miss him so much and his brother
"When Dime started the riff on "becoming" with the whammy pedal, I just couldn't believe it. I thought it was one of the coolest riffs I ever heard". - Terry Date
When this album came out this song was blasted out of every Iroc at my high school at full volume. It was the heaviest shit any of us had ever heard at the time.
@@aaroncollins5188 I wish that stuff happened now
@@aaroncollins5188 Exactly! We always wanted to hear Becoming through a system (one friend had 8x10's in his truck) and holy fuck it was great! \m/
@@aaroncollins5188 I remember all the kids talking about the album "have you heard it already??!!" kids were loosing their minds, it was indeed so heavy for the time and Pantera was almost mainstream back then, so you had that rusty, roaring, screaming sound shoved down everybodys throats lol so funny. Also, everyone was prazing Vinnie's drum lines, which were just ridiculous as well. Monster, monster record!
@@griffinwarner7310 ya now we hear fucc boi music
"Gonna play the parts now really quick...at a slower pace." - Englund Jr 2022
Thanks for the kind word & shout out Ola, it's very kind of You! \m/
You both got a shout out from Zak Wylde in the Rick Beato interview 🤘👏
So, no one's gonna talk about the fact, that Dime did not step on the whammy during the live version??? It was used by the guitar tech from the backstage, most likely. But the synchronization between the two must've been perfect.
nah, dime has an invisible 3rd foot doing the whammy
Yeah Dime let his tech Grady do alot of the pedal stuff backstage cause he wanted to be stomping around the stage not messing with pedals.
He would summon the pedal with his mind power.
Very true, there’s a video of Dime talking about that!
Alot of guitarist let their techs do the triggers and pedals back stage so they are not limited to just one spot on the stage at any given time.
I think some will have a few set up on stage just in case they fancy doing it themselves sometimes
Met Dimebag after a Damageplan show in October of 2004. I always heard how cool he was, but he was beyond nice and took the time to take pictures, sign autographs and shoot the shit with everyone. I just remember some dude taking a picture with Dime and Dime saying hey let’s do it again, your flash didn’t go off. He didn’t have to do that! Vinny was so drunk just saying woooh to everyone. Not only a monster guitar player but a real kind human being as well. Truly missed - they played this song during the encore
WOOOOOOHHH
That tone is phenomenal!
Growing up in North Texas and watching those guys go from a local club band to Metal Gods known around the world was amazing!! Rest In Power Dime & Vinnie! 🇨🇱🤘
Everytime I'm in the Dallas area I make it a point to visit the Abbott Brothers' graves
Still haven't made it to their graves yet.😢.. Got to party and hang with them numerous times. Fun dudes!
knowing Pantera is a Texan band, it makes me even more proud to be a Texas
As you put the chilean FLAG, I can share that Pantera is playing its 2nd night after Sepultura tonight at the Movistar Arena in SCL. Rex Brown travelled back to the USA. So, Phil Anselmo is the Thrash Metal Crooner this season! 🎸🎸🎸🇨🇱🇨🇱🇨🇱
This video just reconfirms why Pantera is, was, and always will be such an amazing band. It’s a damn shame I never got to see them live.
You can go to this tour!! is not the same band but is a good tribute! I was fortunate to see them live in Chile, they came twice. 1997/1998
Best ever not even a debate
Internet guitarists: "Dimebucker pickup sounds terrible"
Also Internet guitarists: "woah this tone is sick"
-_-
Lawrence Xl-500 is much better than the sd db imo. Ive got a bill & becky it rules
I like them, Duncan makes great shit, I love the JB SH4 and JN2 Zebra sets. It only sounds "Bad" if you don't know how a fucking eq works
@@KelticKabukiGirl YOU obviously haven’t heard me play… 😂
@@Clintotron no, but I bet I could get you some kick ass tone. I have a half assed Channel with gear demos that is going full assed as soon and the studio is finished. It's for the heavy and weird.
Dime used Bill Lawrence pickups and there were a few products that Dime just…should have never put his name on later in his life. If you want a good (Vulgar and onward) Dime-style tone, get an Alnico 5 pickup like a Duncan JB, a Krank amplifier, and some speakers like Eminence Man O Wars.
I had Front Row seats for Pantera in Concert when Dime was with them. They had White Zombie, Prong, and Megadeth on Tour with them. Great Show during the 90's!
I saw Pantera with White Zombie and Korn in Tampa, FL back in the day - it was a killer show!
The double kick pattern in this song is killer!
It's kind a like a gallop/ with a triple kick finished off with straight doubles each bar. ..what a groove👍
Correct me if I’m wrong i think the way vinny explained it was basically 4/4 on the left foot and triplets with right
To the six-nine of the double-duce
That subtle tuning difference outside of D standard used to always drive me crazy. Love that people won't let dime's music and memory fade. He changed the whole game for me. Thanks Ola!
I was at that Dynamo Open Air concert in 1998. Most brutal show I ever witnessed.
what bands besides pantera played in this concert?
@@gabrielvillanova5408 Rammstein, Within Temptation, Death, Dimmu Borgir, Strapping Young Lad, Soulfy, Incubus, Deftones and a lot more I cant remember 🤣
@@TualCor Dimmu Borgir and Death i've See on UA-cam, but i thought it was in 97 but it was in 98 in the same concert hahah
During live shows, Dime would have his tech Grady do the whammy pedal offstage for him. There's video out there of Grady talking about it
We need more videos like this where you really break down all the little details Dime threw in his riffs and solos.
Dimes writing and techniques were legendary. His goal for tones and new sound was epic.
That’s how I learned songs back in the 90s. Just listening to it and figuring it out by ear.. if only we had the resources then that we do now lol. Great job!
Learning by ear makes you a better player.
Dime's Guitar World column was basically him taking sections from this book and then tabbing out the correct ways to play them. They released it as a full book of the collected columns that's worth picking up.
Riffer madness is the name of the book. I read the columns from gw at the time.
One of the best. Far Beyond Driven is the best album ever created by any band. And I truly believe that. I’ve always loved the aggression and raw anger in it. Perfect front to back.
*Man I love Vinnys drumming on this tune. It’s one of the more difficult drum parts he’s done to my knowledge. And that bell/hat work is interesting stuff.*
Ola, please do more of these videos! Particular the PanterA stuff!
This brings back memories of trying to learn songs and rewinding the tape. Thanks for bringing those feelings back , OLA! \m/
The squeal in this song is actually a Pantera cub meowing! 😸
Always love a Pantera video!
I absolutely love this series! Keep it up.
I love these videos!! It’s so cool how you can just listen and figure it out!
I was literally just looking to see if Ola had made a video like this for “Becoming” last week. Great timing, definitely one of the best Pantera riffs
Love this series. Both guitar and drums. 🔥👍
Loved the video man, really good!
I'm so glad you decided to do this song.its one of my favorite dimebag riffs
I always thought that it was a natural harmonic at the 5th fret + the whammy!
Nice video as always Ola, cheers from Argentina! :)
Ola, The way you keep Dime fresh and current is so very much appreciated! Was listening to Becoming on the way to my hockey game the other night. Seen them a bunch of times growing up. Still pains me to this day. You have such a wonderful channel! Thanks again brother!
Come to Florida so we can have some Black Tooth Grins!
This is the most epic UA-cam this week!!!!! Becoming is one of my favorite songs and this sounds so accurate the way you play it! Do more Pantera songs please! Hola from Mexico
I love how you take the time to figure this stuff out the right way and then show us how the real way is played and for that I thank you ola.
Dude, I love that a guy I have seen shred, is sitting and learning songs like the rest of us. Makes me feel better about all those hours I spent listening to records when I was a kid! Killer job brother!
Becoming is such a powerful song that I once played at work and got three of my workmates into pantera just from the beginning,
Great job! I saw them many times and you nailed it!
Wanted to learn this song forever, probably my favorite Pantera Track. It's always evaded my ear. Thank you for this!
My biggest challenge when it comes to learning tabs has always been one person will transcribe a song and it's not even close to the original, and they copy and paste their version on multiple sites. Just like you mentioned it in the beginning of this video for I'm Broken
Yeah a lot of people take the tab books for granted, the most accurate ones I’ve read are some of the Dream Theater tab books. Otherwise they’re usually not super accurate
The tab book for "and justice for all" made me hate metallica 😂
@@OlaEnglund doesn't Dream theater compose all of their parts? Not taking away any "feel" from Petrucci, Myung and Rudess, but Dime was a bit more nuanced. I think that's why the tab writers hardly ever get it right.
@@OlaEnglund The only tab books I've bought are the ones where I KNOW they are created by the artist. I know that the tab books for Archspire on SheetHappens are made by Dean Lamb, and the Darkest Hour tab books I bought directly from the band are written by them. It's sad how many are just... licensed out? I am not sure how the horrible tab books came to be, actually.
@@russellbelew2604 SheetHappens do work together with the artists for all their tab book releases, but it's not always the artist themselves that write the actual tablature. In most cases (even with Archspire, as Dean Lamb has stated himself in a UA-cam video) some talented guy at Sheet Happens does most of the actual transcribing by ear, often having been sent isolated guitar tracks/stems from the artist/label, and then the artist pretty much just proof-reads it. In some cases the tablature can be written 100% by the band and then just released through SheetHappens, but that's more rare.
Bloody hell. How many people got hearing damage with the dime squeal plus a 2 octave up Whammy live.
Great timing. I am working on a Pantera riff medley video and Becoming is the next riff to learn. Thanks for the headstart!
I really love all the stuff that Dime make, but definitely love when I see fans enjoying his stuff, playing his riffs. I really was too happy seeing Ola enjoying this song, and of course all other videos when appear Pantera and/or Dime.
He was also playing the culprit in that video!! Love that guitar.🤘
Glad to see that Ola learns songs basically the same way I do these days. Praise the guitar gods for live concert videos.
And yeah...those tab books sucked for us 90s kids.
The tab books were at least something, back when there was nothing else!
Awesome Ola. I tried to learn this too by ear back in the day and gave up too! Keep doing this segment series I am digging them man!
I haven't been here for a long time. I'm happy to see how your channel has grown. Keep up the good work man!
Whammy 90s revival! 🤘🏽
Such an under appreciated song
By who because everyone ik loves this song lol
Dude... thank you so much, I'm starting learning that! I don't think it's an exaggeration saying that YOU are keeping Pantera and their songs alive and relevant for everyone and that's like really awesome! Thank you so much for your work! :)
This has got to be one of the most innovative guitar channels. This man puts so much effort in trying new stuff and evolving the channel. This really keeps setting the bar high for other channels to reach, respect! :)
Ola is such a badass. Thank you for paying respect to Dime.
Fucking smashed it,nasty tone. Randomly googled this song and ur video popped up, uploaded 15min ago. Are you reading my mind or what? :D
Men äntligen!!
A proper explanation on how to really play Becoming, I’ve been struggling for years..
Tusen tack Ola 👍🏻🤘🏻
Dang dude this song is so crisp....even after all these years this song just hits! Great job learning it and putting it down. His left hand was so slippery and fast with slides I cant comprehend.
Fun fact dime had someone back stage using the whammy during the squeal when played live
Even funner fact--It was his awesome tech Grady.
@@adambomb138 and they were a killer team!
Hey Ola what's up,
Thank you for the free lesson I can play the hell out of bluesy MC blues face already I've been playing my new solar 10 to 12 hours a day everyday.
I love how you talk both us and the guys in background. You're a great instructor
One of the first Pantera tracks I really got into, was a gateway for me in a way. I was blown away with how heavy the intro was compared to what I was listening to at that time. Great to hear you play it now and nail it.
These videos makes me feel like i can do things like that too.
Like, learning a song by ear, you know. Makes me feel like i'm capable of this.
Amazing...
Before the internet was a thing, MANY people learned to play by ear. It was the only option for a lot of people so there's no reason why you can't do it too! Just takes time and dedication, like anything else!
If you can learn “Iron Man”, you can learn anything. All it takes is time and patience.
Good way to build confidence in your ear training is with simple 3-4 chord rock/punk songs
Foo Fighters, Dead Kennedys, a lot of classic rock.
I think my first "by-ear" song was "Black Math" by White Stripes
general rule of a tabulature (lol) - if tab shows sudden move to the end of the neck most likely its played on higher strings closer to the previous notes on neck than at the end of it :P
Never understood how they could write such a tedious book, and be so far off....almost like intentional misdirection!
This is the FIRST time I have ever watched a UA-cam video WITHOUT BLINKING, ever. Thanks man and more power!
Ola, really digging your videos looking forward to seeing more of what you’re doing!!!
When I'm stuck on a Pantera riff or solo, I often head over to Attila Voros's YT page and he has likely already covered the lesson spot on with tab. Including this song.
EDIT
Just saw you mention Atilla. Haha good.
That whammy riff is so modern sounding, way ahead of its time. Basically every emmure song lol
I loved Pantera and Sepultura, back in the day. Never saw Pantera, but saw Sepultura at Pacific Amphitheater open for Ozzy
on The No More Tours tour. Straight up heavy metal from both. Can't believe I remember any of it, I was so drunk and high. Great memories.
Congrats! Great watching the learning process.
I think we can all agree that we would love to see Ola’s take on Goddamn Electric
I remember reading that Dime had a sound guy actually doing the Whaammy. Wonder if that’s true or not.
When we see the video of Dimebag waliking while doing the whammy sound, it may be the case indeed.
Yeah Grady would do that behind the stage.
I think only for the riff of becoming Grady did it but no way the solo.. suicide note pt2 (live) would’ve been dimes too just how fast & wild the foot sweeps are..
Looks like it from the video as well. Dime is way too mobile to get tied down for a Whammy during riff stomp-o-rama.
Yeah, he tabbed out the correct version in his Riffer Madness column for Guitar World and said that Grady would do it live because "That riff fucking smokes, there's no way I can stand still while playing it."
One of my favorite jams and bands, hell yea dude 🤘🤘
MAN, this is something I've needed to see my whole life. I read somewhere that his guitar tech did the magic backstage for the skweel live. Thanks for this, duder.
I used to learn Pantera from a book: GUITAR World - Dimebag Darrell`s Riffer Madness, and it`s very accurate.
I have every issue of GW from 1987 to 2015….. I just stopped getting them because so many songs and lessons were getting repetitive…. I also have Guitar One, Guitar For The Practicing Musician and Total Guitar…..
Who else is gonna use this as their tutorial video to learn this track? :p
This is one of my favourite Pantera songs, can't wait to get this down and then It's head-banging along with the track! Thanks Ola! ^_^
Such a simple beastly set of riffs man!
Nice work Ola. Really enjoyed watching this.
THROWDOWN has a fantastic cover of Becoming! A very PANTERA and SEPULTURA influenced band. Their cover of Propaganda is great as well. 🤘🤘
Hi Ola you should learn this on drums too, you'll really enjoy how easy it is. I don't even think you need a second bass pedal to play it so if you're not quite there with the bass pedals Becoming is good start
Damn!!! You get Dime's EXACT tone and feel so damn well!! 🤘🤘🤘
you nailed it awesome job as always
I had the Soundgarden Superunknown tab book back in the day, found out later some of the tabs were wrong as well 😄
The nirvana books are wrong also.
Yeah I had that 4th of July is all basically wrong mailman and metallicas books where horrible they sounded right but they would have you going from 8th fret to 24th for solos back then I don’t know shot about theory but yea that’s whAt we had now the kids can watch videos Check out tabs tunings it’s easy
8:22 Dime pushed super fucking hard on his strings for those mutes. Proto-djent! Check out the outro to "I'm Broken" to hear more of how palm-bent his muted notes are.
Yeah I always noticed that his palm mutes make his notes go sharp, which is so cool and so brutal
Throes of rejection has those brutal djenty palm mute chugs
Your love for them brings a smile to my face 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Loved the video Ola!
The only reason I'd own a whammy
What about Suicide Note, Pt. 2
Are whammy pedals a pain In the ass to deal with? Guitar takes too much talent, that’s why I’m a drummer lol
@12:44 there is i think an extra half step you missed... but almost spot on i guess... any how.... well done!!!
Bloody hell i had never seen a real musician take apart a song like that, you got some serious talent, proops to all you musicians out there🤘🤘
This song quite possibly has made more of an impact on my life than any other composition of music in history. It’s a tremendous source of strength and inspiration.
Can we talk about how awesome this song sounds slowed down?! Sweet infant Jesus!
Would love to even play the guitar half as good!!! 👍🏻
You can, just drill scales for 2 hours a day. You'll see results
@@dicktrickle4197 need to relearn as I haven’t played a guitar since I was about 7 or 8 years old!!!
God damn man...you are like the real deal. I am a classically trained pianist since I was six....Saxaphone and scoring music at 11...drums, bass, and guitar at 12. I am 40 now. This is my favorite Ola video. I know Dime used a digitech pitch shifter for the high note on the verse...but I could never replicate it. Ola is awesome for not only doing the verse justice...but he did a good job on the solo.
YESSSS YOU MENTIONED ATILLA!!! He's a real cool dude! Great guitar player
Gotta remember, dime used 9s early on, i think by fbd he was using 9.5s but in 425 d, the muting part was probably 2-4, but picking hard couldve made it go sharp just enough to sound like the third fret. Or at least somewhere inbetween. Could make you recognise the notes as being a semitone apart.
Edit: sorry been thinking about this and it drives me crazy, doesnt it sort of sound like a bend?
He didn’t use 9s man he used “10s”…
I’ll see myself out
@@thetribalist6923 the fact that it took me 8 minutes to realise this was a joke disappoints me. I am truly stupid. However. I like your funny words magic man.
@@cameronravenhilltv7778 ha no worries bro. I figured the way I worded it was kind of derpy anyway, so we’ll just say this was no good, and attack the radical here.
Sorry. I can’t stop, apparently.

you make tab book sound so swedish haha! teb buhck :p great job man I always look forward to your Pantera covers!
Good job, man. That was cool
Beast of a player plays a beast of a song

Badass recovery bro. Sounded massive
