RIP ALEXI LAIHO! May you rest in peace my dear friend.
In Finland's land of metal,
A legend's story was told,
Of a guitar god named Alexi,
Whose music left us all enthralled.
His fingers danced upon the strings,
A virtuoso in every way,
As Children of Bodom blazed forth,
In a sound that was here to stay.
With every riff and every lick,
He pushed the boundaries of his craft,
His talent shining like a beacon,
Through every measure and every staff.
From "Hatebreeder" to "Follow the Reaper",
And beyond to "Are You Dead Yet?",
Alexi Laiho's music lives on,
A legacy we'll never forget.
Though he's left us far too soon,
His spirit lives within us all,
Through his music and his passion,
He'll continue to rock and roll.
So let us raise a horn in his honor,
And headbang to the sound of his guitar,
For Alexi Laiho's legend lives on,
A true metal superstar.

This guy was and IS the Bruce Lee of guitar-playing. Dude was so fluid like water on guitar, and when he shredded, he SHREDDED - the ultimate definition of guitar shredding. Never liked COB, but I always respected Alexi Laiho. Such a phenomenal guitar player. My condolences to all the fans and to Finland :(
Well said. I've played guitar for ~20 years, and Alexi was the guitarist who's style I would have most liked to emulate. He had a masterful ear for melodic metal riffing, and his approach to lead was fairly unique for metal. He would break into free flowing "unabashed guitar wizard" mode during his solos occasionally. His guitar fills were sometimes the same way. His approach to combining melodic metal and flowy guitar playing was, and still is, unrivaled. There are a lot of guitarists who might be faster or have chops just as good, but Alexi's approach to songwriting and the way he played was just...out of this world. I love metal, but guitarists generally are very "on the beat" when it comes to solos. They may very well be 32nd notes, but they're fairly grid oriented (in terms of where the notes fall). They are not very free flowing. Alexi was just....well, I'm repeating myself, but yeah, he was a master at doing exactly what he did.
@@adamrad2220 I know what you mean. They are very schematic with the phrasing. The 2 metal guitarist I like the most are not like that. One is alexi and the other one is Marty friedman. The melodic rythmic is much more soul foul in those. Especially in Marty
You not liking COB is fair enough, but is it really necessary to bring that up as it relates to the death of one of their members? Come on man, have a little respect.
@@f0otball41 Didn't you even read OP's comment? They said that they respected Alexi Laiho, and praised him for his musical talent on the guitar. If that isn't "little respect," then I don't know what is. Stop being fastidious and semantic about OP not being a fan of COB. At least they showed sympathy and respect by praising Alexi and gave condolences.
A very good guitarist, but he's no Petrucci :)
Easy, easy just ruffling ur feathers. Totally diff styles of guitar. For his style, Alexi was indeed a great guitarist. Seems this past 2yrs we are losing a lot of great musicians, young & old.

I grew up in rural Texas, United States. Our lives could not have started differently, yet that pinch harmonic reached us both in the same manner. RIP Alexi
I remember when I didn't know much about metal, I even referred to the genre as "heavy rock". Well, searching the internet for heavy rock bands (what an idiot) I came across a yahoo recommendation for Children of Bodom. They were my entry into the most extreme metal; my personality received a permanent influence since then. Thanks Alexi, your voice was the first intense scream I heard in my life and back then I was immediately fascinated. You are the reason why I have a taste for gutturals like Arch Enemy’s or Insomnium’s today when before know you I did not tolerate that style.
Bodom was also my gateway to extreme vocals. Up until then I used to think extreme vocals were stupid. Then everything changed. I think it was correlated with the awesome musicianship. If not for the great guitars and keyboards it would still, in my primal mind, be "just another screamo band". Alexi was an inspiration for so many people
why do i always find these great musicians after they die?
@@pashon4percushon Same, with Death's singer Chuck Schuldiner.
@@sizoduke From the beginning I was impressed by their keyboards, even more so on Blooddrunk (my first album). By the way I am nailed to his entire musical career, I never understood so much controversy with his musical "changes" since Follow The Reaper, it would be quite insipid that all his albums sound the same.
This is so relatable, I think they may have been my entry point as well. Them, Death, and honestly Killswitch was in there too just because they had clean vocals I could relate more to at the time. But COB is part of the period that changed my life...RIP to one of the best guitar players ever. Now I listen to black metal while I work....what a change
Quarantine brought me back to Blooddrunk album. That led me to purchasing a bunch of Bodom cds. Now I’m here 😃

ua-cam.com/video/pdci7LbbjQ0/v-deo.html You can tell he stopped practicing so much starting like 2010 and then really drops off for the next few years. But this vid of are you dead yet shows him before that. nails the solo, so good! Thats why he can always make studio stuff because hes sittn down with himself pretty much being able to record what not and is still amazing but if you don't keep up practice and you play at such a level, the live n day to day playing is gonna suffer
@@TheSadistNat1on The reason he played like shit in 2010 is because he broke his arm but never admitted until recent that it really affected his playing

I hate the comments on this video. He's clearly a great guitarist. He's playing at the EMG studio and has his own signature guitar and pickup. Even if you think this song is easy you ought to admire the fact it sounds good. Music isn't about how many notes you can play in 3 seconds it's about what triggers emotions. More over, that tone. Alexi Laiho died a virgin. 🎨🥁🎸
This is unbeliveable, I really cannot believe he's passed away...
To everyone saying the tremolo arm keeps moving:
The guitars in the song are clearly multi tracked.
He would've played this song (AT LEAST) 2 times to get that ass walloping wall of tone - that sound is simply not possible with a single guitar track.
They obviously just visually recorded him both times and took bits and pieces from both recordings, which ever looked cooler during each part, I guess.
No acualy its direct recorded with mixing done....
Rimfeldt Nah, (at least) two takes mixed into one as joseph said. One guitar plays at a time - plus the backing guitar(s) from the record.
Rimfeldt It is also Possible that a Chorus Pedal was implemented on one of the channels where it simply lowered the Pitch of the sound by a bit. It's doable i'm pretty sure like that and it is much easier to record the same thing 2 times on different parts.
Maciej Kamiński
I know about chorus pedals but 1:54 is clearly 2 guitar tracks. Also dual and quad guitar tracking only works with completely different guitar tracks as their imperfections is what makes the sound thick.
Copying and pasting the same guitar track (and/or even setting them apart by a few milliseconds) still doesn't have the same effect.
***** That's exactly what I said..? 2 takes mixed into one..?
Still watching this
Thank you Alexi, for all the lives you've changed for the better, you will not ever be forgotten.
At least twice a week minimum, I would sit here & watch this video multiple times without taking my eyes of the screen. So fucking sad to hear he is gone 💔😥
A legend has left us today, a true inspiration. his legacy will live on! RIP Alexi Laiho
RIP to one of the best to ever do it. Of all the amazing Metal Musicians who have passed in the last decade - Alexi really hit me hard. He's absolutely one of the main influences for me to pick a Guitar back up as a teen after putting it down as a kid. I'm now 35 and can't imagine not playing.
Thanks Alexi. Love you brother.
I'll never forget my friend burning me a follow the reaper cd - I fell in love with this band. I was also learning guitar at the time and got my first electric guitar, then I discovered Drop C tuning through Alexi's lessons online. He was truly an amazing guitar player and really inspired me at the time. Rest in peace man and enjoy shredding it up in the after life, you definitely changed many people's lives. I was so grateful to see them preform live in 2009 with Lamb of God
