Winds, Nihility and the negation are the most amazing trifecta of tech death perfection. I've listened to Nihility which seems like a thousand times. It never gets old and I always seem to find something new in the album.
What a monster of a song and main riff. I need a week of warming up to even have an approach of what is needed to play it. Kudos to Vogg for being able to compose it and play it every single gig. And also kudos to you, Ola, for being able to learn this awesome piece of music.
This is what I’ve been doing to learn how to play guitar, just by listening and trying over and over. Been playing guitar for 12 years now selftaught by ear. Never give up guys! 🤘🔥
Saw them open for Lamb of God in 2013. One of those times when the Opening Band Surprises you and Blows Your Socks Off. They were so Tight and in the Pocket. Mad Respect.
This shows what it looks like when we learn something that is actually out of our comfort zone. In this case Ola has trouble with his wrist picking technique. We can see this by observing him practicing it in a slower pace: He completely relies on his wrist, which is good. As soon as he goes up the tempo he switches to an almost entirely lower-arm-based movement. The problem with this isn't just the potential for injury but also the fact that sudden start/stop-motions are hard to execute on a consistent basis, even if the picking pattern is well memorized.
Deffinitelly, the way to go in this case is to learn how to play with the wrist in highest tempo with using as small amount of effort as possible. This is actually the song I practiced it a lot.
I always wonder how Ola does his picking technique, I try it from time to time but it cramps my thumb up. Using the full-arm is a bitch for long stamina. I moved away from that quite some time ago, now I'm just trying to be more relaxed with the right hand.
Good points made. This applies to every instrument. For example, playing 16th notes at higher BPMs on the hi hats using the arm is considered bad technique, which will eventually tire you out and possibly lead to damage in the elbow and nerves. As one progresses on the drums and is more and more comfortable with a particular song, a flicking technique, isolating the wrist and fingers, is a much more ergonomic and natural technique. Ola is playing drums now, so maybe there’s some carryover from one to the other.

For anyone else struggling with stamina when it comes to riffs like this one (the opener), I find it hurts my wrist and forearms less when I’m standing, allowing a hanging, more natural position for my arm. I find when I’m sitting and have my arm perpendicular to my body, my arm tenses up more than necessary.

Vogg is by far my favorite death metal guitarist. His riffs are so quick, and precise, yet groovy. He paved the way for technical death metal bands like Soreption, which I highly recommend checking out for Decapitated fans. Great job on the cover!
With Vogg, one of the things I've noticed is that he tends to play with the guitar slung really low, and when your guitar is that low, it makes it impossible to pick from your arm. So even in the music video, you can clearly see it's all fairly effortless and from the wrist. Whereas when you sit down in non-classical position, suddenly your arm starts doing a bunch of the work. Took me years to be able to get past that, and practicing stood up with my guitar slung low was kind of a eureka moment for me!
Finally you had a challenge man!!! Vogg is a fucking slayer of utmost proportions and that song is just brutal af. I'd love to hear you tackle Zyklon's song "Core Solution". Another riff master Samoth!!! These guys were doing the harmonic swipe WAY before Gojira made it a feature of their songs. Great video man!!!🤘😜🤘

Well done man! That looked freakin hard! Vogg's chugga is insane!! And for a pick, I think he uses a piece of bone from the smashed head of one of the victims of his skullcrushing riffs. :D
I'm new here, hi... I've never heard of this band. The guitarist is a beast, upon sampling his compositions I feel compelled to testify... that .."antigroove type, attackdriven labotomy" that I think is one way to describe the experience, total guitar domination.... I'm enjoying your channel brother...
Ola learning a Decapitated song: Fuck me! Vogg learning a The Haunted song: Is that all you got?!? I hope you and Vogg can do a Coffee with Ola some day!
As a black metal player for 15 years. The speed is all in the wrist and all about being relaxed. The second you start flexing anything you’ll get sloppy. Great video Ola and sick song.
Oh, we cannot beat this "stamina picking thing" Ola. So we need to switch picking type and genre too. I don't know that are you familiar with it but a Wintersun song would be interesting eg. Starchild, Battle Against Time or Winter Madness. Yeah, definitely would be interesting.
Really solid effort! That opening riff is nuts to nail. And this is an easier song riff wise for Decapitated. They used to be far more technical and I miss that, but they did balance it and released the best modern death metal record so far this century: Organic Hallucinosis.
Maybe you could try learning some Morbid Angel classics? I'm thinking Chapel of Ghouls, Maze of Torment, maybe later material like God of Emptiness, Where the Slime Live, etc.
Ola is brave for showing us himself learning this song dude I used to know it but I haven’t played it in a while so it was like learning all over again I was right with ya ola lol seeing you struggle a bit makes me feel better I’ve been playing long time since I’ve been 8 I’m gonna be 42 this august I’m old lol ! Vogg is defenitely the best metal guitarist to walk this earth. His technique is so flawless and impeccable. Change my mind. You won’t Polish death metal = the best death metal 🇵🇱
I'm sorry, but I find even the tiniest notion of that there can be only one "best guitarist" in any given genre, especially when if you just consider pure technical skill, is so weirdly naive, almost childish. Like, have you ever heard of Wes Hauch, who has one of the most clean and inhumanly precise playing of all metal guitarists ever (and his guitar tone is *the* best tone of all modern metal guitarists, change my fucking mind)? Of Joe Haley from Psycroptic? Of Jeff fucking Loomis (imo his best work both technically and compositionally is on the Conquering Dystopia's self-titled LP)? Of Dave Davidson from Revocation?
@@icipher6730 sorry bro but Vogg is technically and compositionally the best. I mean the guitarists you mentioned are great ofc but as for me, they haven’t written such bangers as vogg has ( better not to meantion new Arch Enemy) Carnival is forever along with the first four decapitated albums are admittedly masterpieces and modern classics. All the riffs on the albums are out of this world and technical at the same time. No one is able to recreate decap’s riffs the way he plays them. That’s why you will never see second guitar in the crew :)
@@travisbickle3604 You people are weird for arguing over who's the best. Some people like Decapitated because the riffs are vicious and tight, some people like Arch Enemy because they write beautiful melodies and put on amazing performances, and some people like Jeff Loomis because of...well, all of the above. And some people like Bob Dylan because of his remarkable lyricism. Just listen to what you want to listen to and don't bother about what other people think :D
holy hells that baratone sounds like a 7 string. Ok i had no idea. Vogg is NUTTS! That he can even write this riff is just crazy! what blows my mind is my eyes CANNOT tell a difference in the speed of your picking hand, but i can absolutely hear the change in the rythm. But after seeing Ola struggle, I'm reminded that it's ok to suck at a song you've just started learning. That's how you get better. By playing stuff that challenges you.

Kick ass job Ola, that picking on that song is ridiculous. You did a great job in my opinion, especially learning by ear. Vogg has a wicked right hand.
Good observation
nice
Finally you had a challenge man!!! Vogg is a fucking slayer of utmost proportions and that song is just brutal af.
I'd love to hear you tackle Zyklon's song "Core Solution". Another riff master Samoth!!! These guys were doing the harmonic swipe WAY before Gojira made it a feature of their songs. Great video man!!!🤘😜🤘
I love Decapitated's album, 'Winds Of Creation". As I was watching, I did a pick throw and I'm sure I will never see that pick again. R.I.P. Witold "Vitek" Kieltyka. Such an amazing drummer!! He left us way too young.
Too true about Vitek, the world lost a truly talented young man and if he was anything like Vogg, a genuinely sweet soul.
Well done man! That looked freakin hard! Vogg's chugga is insane!! And for a pick, I think he uses a piece of bone from the smashed head of one of the victims of his skullcrushing riffs. :D
I love this song, and I love playing guitar. But man, this is much more easier on air guitar! 😆
Anything off of the self titled album would be awesome
Cheers Ola Englund your the man
We need Ola learning a Psycroptic song for our entertainment.
I love the expression of overwhelming dread when you switch from -50% back to normal for the intro riff.
Vogg is defenitely the best metal guitarist to walk this earth. His technique is so flawless and impeccable. Change my mind. You won’t
Polish death metal = the best death metal 🇵🇱
Just something that always fascinated me. *goes up to 10% faster* me: is this humanly possible? Thank you for sacrificing your picking hand to cover this song for us ola
I am a bit surprised that vogg didn't recommend something from anticult, that album has more groove oriented and less techy riffs, Kill this Cult for example could have worked really well for this video series
he recommended it because iits their most know mainstream song
@@zbigniewiksinski I'd argue that title goes to Spheres of Madness
@@LeGrandPleb Or Day 69 :D
I enjoyed that SOOO much! I was just struggling with the middle section of a Dream Theater song earlier today. I was getting down on myself afterwards. But after seeing Ola struggle, I'm reminded that it's ok to suck at a song you've just started learning. That's how you get better. By playing stuff that challenges you.
I think hate me by children of bodom would be a fun one to learn. It's not the hardest song, but it's also not easy. The guitar solos do be hard tho imo, but ofc you can skip em.
Seconded
Wow!!!!!! Holy shit R E S P E C T!!! Actually didn't know it was that hard! In Voggs hands it sounds like a basic warmup pattern!!!😁
very impressive, but you can learn smells like teen spirit?
No U
Kick ass job Ola, that picking on that song is ridiculous. You did a great job in my opinion, especially learning by ear. Vogg has a wicked right hand. Try a .77 yellow Dunlop next time, I use those and Jazz III picks depending on what I’m playing. You were a trooper on this tune. Cheers from Chicago.🤘
Damn that song is a real challenge, its riff is too fast for this earth.
Amazing album! Also, great song pick, it's nice to see you really struggling to play the song but sticking to it and eventually getting there in a few days. 💪
