"I can basically watch exactly how he's playing it... what the fuck is he doing there?"
The natural comedy of Ola.
Basically me when I learned this song way back! and Jim made this live version but still it’s funny when he said that 😅
😂
🤣🤣🤣 I couldn't stop laughing
🤣🤣
made me laugh so hard haha
Ola: "this is more complicated than it seems"
Corey: "NOTHING IS WHAT IT SEEMS!"
I PUSH MY FINGERS INTO MYYYYY
@Enno hole
@@alif499 does it stop the ache?
@@richardg5301 But its made of things!
@Zweihander Gaming Cheeses that never end
Not only is your tone PERFECT, but your learning ability just by ear is incredible.
watching Ola learns to play by ear makes me feel better about myself actually, this is awesome!
I don't know how to read TAB or notes myself, I do covers and learn by ear also, so seeing him pressing every frets trying to figure out the right note makes me happy 😂👍🏼👍🏼
I feel normal! pheww~
I seen Jim's tutorial of this song.
He said he's not a technical player.
He just plays Root Notes. 🎭🎸
Good joke lol, sick beard!
in Paul's tutorial of the song he says "and here jim is playing a nice octave slide, i just play along with the root of it"
I know you're just kidding, but the dude is kind of a shit guitar player... and admits it.
@@kambion Jim?? Jim is technically very proficient, just watch him solo
@@kambion he isnt shit. Just a little messy
This man is so legendary that his hair gets blown by the wind, inside his studio
I wish my hair was light like his
Lol, I was thinking about that too
@@FelipeSan. My long hair is extremely thick (and curly) yet somehow gets blown around crazily by the wind.
He’s that majestic lol
You'd look awesome too if you put a fan below your desk lol
I think learning Gematria from Slipknot would be fun to watch.
Criminally underrated song
so much fun to play!
Agree with that
One song I keep coming back to try to learn but their precise lighting fast hammer ons will be the death of me
Yesssss
Gematria: The Killing Name would be a brilliant tune to learn. It suits your natural style of playing too. I know you'd murder that track bro!!!!
I agree this song is badass
Yes petition in the comments for Gematria!
R.I.P Joey Jordison. Undoubtedly one of metal's leading pioneers on the skins. You are sorely missed brotha.
It seems like he also wrote a lot of their songs and riffs. I think most of Iowa is Paul and Joey
@@tonypaella It seems to me that Joey wrote most of the music for all the bands he was in, the only exception I can think of is the first Murderdolls album I think a lot of the songs were originally written by Wednesday 13.
@@0Nafod0 I didn't follow him outside of slipknot but it wouldn't surprise me if he did all that
Goes to show: a good song doesn't need to be hard to play. Although the tightness of it is a skill in itself.
And the composition
You got it!!!!
painkiller nxt pleaseeee
In this case a bad song
@@supremelordoftheuniverse5449 This is undeniably a good song
Now this is actually informative, i think most people wonder how learning by ear is done.
I think he played so much guitar and for so much years that he can easily recognize the chords and other stuff
@@aurumtenebris It's familiarity, to be sure. You have to know what you're listening to, and what you're listening for. But the most important aspect is to recognize when what you think you're hearing is not actually what you're hearing.
It does take some amount of workable musical knowledge.
As most people don't have that it'll be hard to understand how it works, but it's basically like learning a new language: you study it, get your head around it, and when you're advanced enough you listen to a spoken text, and see if you can translate it on the spot.
But how else?
@@RM-hr7ug tabs
Me trying to learn every guitar song ever 4:50, 5:31, 10:14 & 13:53. Keep up the great work bro.
13:41 is my fave part, at the end of the day, "eff it! let me play it my own way" 🤣👍🏼
What this has shown me is that I'm not as bad at guitar as I think. Seeing someone who is very good at guitar struggle a little bit on songs in the same way I would makes me realize the biggest difference isn't skill, it's taking the time learn and memorize songs correctly. Loved the video. 😁
Nah the skill is that he learns the song by ear 180 times faster than you do with tabs.
@@kingkeltic4228 I haven’t used tabs in like 10 years. I’m speaking purely on a technical level. I learned this exact song by ear a few years ago. What I’m saying is I went through the same thought process.
Sitting here, watching Ola learn a song on guitar instead of taking my guitar and learn it myself. I guess that's the reason why I'm not playing in a famous band....
Growing up learning guitar in the mid 90’s was hard. But I’m glad my ears learned to not trust tabs
you can actually use both and just make your live easier.
use tabs and dont trust them
@@spunkytheozinho there is always A or B not A+B kinda people.
That's for sure! Even if they were good tabs, there always seemed to be parts that were wrong. I'm not sure if it was an intentional thing or what, being that most were coming to you in guitar magazines. Maybe it was intended, Idk - but hey it developed my ear,, so....not all bad. V⚡🇺🇸
Mid 90’s lmfao I was thirty, and you had it made
Exactly! I started in ‘91, first tab book I got was Master of Puppets. Right away I found a single note rhythm part that they had wrong! Wtf lol! 🤣 Playing by ear is always best 🤘
The biggest thing about Mick and Jim's playing doesn't necessarily come down to the complexity of the riffs, but more on the smaller things like how they slide and bend, even how they mute certain things. These things make them pretty unique guitarists in their setting.
l'oreal learns slipknot
that jim root lesson is from fret 12 production and in it jim shows how he plays their songs live
Why is nobody talking about the TONE? Sounded pretty spot on. Solid 6/10
Only 6?
@@DogPrty 6/10 is the same as 10/10
@@coeycruz oh okay 🤠👍
You just did...
TOAN
I love watching you deconstruct the songs. It's helpful to a beginner like myself. Thank you.
I think that in the Jim root lesson, that part you say you can’t hear, is the second line that is a harmonic to the normal riff. With two guitars, the song has layers, and if I remember correctly, he was just showing another level of the song. You played it very well
Thanks, I suspected this and was looking for affirmation
Ola was more playing a mix of Jim and mick. Normally mick stays in the lower stuff and Jim does the tiddly dee bits. Makes sense when playing it solo though.
@@matthewhattersley1286 Mick is on the right, Jim on the left (except in Iowa). Prior Vol 5 both played lead and rhythim guitar. Now, is mostly Jim that does soloing.
Try Disasterpiece. One of the most brutal song of Slipknot IMO
The Heretic Anthem is a delight
Three nil also a brutal/underrated song
Gematria is the most difficult

Anything from Iowa is great.
Moonshield by In Flames or Slaughter Of The Soul by At The Gates would be great to see!
Moonshield!!!!
Moonshield!
Dude, to play slaughter of the soul takes some real stamina. So many fast triplets it will make your hand hurt. Would be cool to see if Ola could do it in one session
@@wyldeyouth Slaughter of the soul is not that hard, and Ola probably already knows it.
@@wyldeyouth Hourglass by Lamb of God kills my right hand every time (still can’t play it the proper speed and intensity). Going back to Slaughter of the Soul after that is like a vacation
Honestly, Ola. I know you posted this a long time ago, but watching this is really inspiring me to learn more songs. It's really helping me go through a tough time I'm going through in my life. Thank you :)
I love listening to this guy talk just as much as hearing him play. You rock Ola!
Let’s go! An easier song this time. Slipknot Duality!
I'm sure it will be a sold 6/10 brother 🤘🤘
lessgooo Ola
Erra - Skyline, next time

Hey Ola that's a sexy Slipknot tone, it's passive pickup on the type T, right ?
loving this "learning " series. cheers Ola!
why is it the most satisfying thing seeing someone learn something, trying different ways and then getting it. Very inspirational man.
That momentary smile when you run through the section flawlessly and you're in that moment with the song. You're vibing heavy. That's what it it's all about right there.
We need these weekly!!! Awesome man.
12:09 made me laugh so hard. Ola sounded genuinely upset with what Jim was playing.
🤣🤣🤣 My thoughts exactly
Ola's videos are the absolute best! Awesome playing, super funny and actually showing us things!
What a legend! Keep it up ola we need more of these videos
Learn Gematria by Slipknot. That song is a pain in the ass on guitar
Jesus how beautiful is that guitar man! Sounds an absolute beast too.
Ola, you just inspired me to pick up the guitar again! This is how I learned too. I've personally never seen another player do this like me. I'm so happy there are others! Thank you so much!
love it! duality is always sounds nice and cool to play
thanks Ola
This was the first metal metal song I learned, had never really done pinch harmonics before but I had a lot of fun learning it, sat down for like 5 hours straight just lost the sense of time and learned it and got a lot of new respect for metal and from there got confidence to try and learn everything from pantera, slipknot, damageplan, spineshank, trivium and a bunch of others. Great times
Your ability to learn by ear is unreal dude. Sick! ❤️
amazing bro i have recently just picked my guitar back up after 3 years missed smashing songs and learning by ear your videos made me pick it back up keep up the good work brother
Watching you learn the song like this is way better than watching other tutorial videos tbh. Its more motivational for me. Great content❗
I'm so thankful for Jim Root filming all those tutorials with Fret 12.
This song is so much more fun to play now.
I've played it wrong for a decade xD
This is what makes ola the shit. He makes me want to play guitar every time I Watch his videos. I love picking up my guitar 🎸
Awesome, thanks Ola! Great stuff!🇨🇦
really loving the series man, keep em coming!
Nice one man. I was at the Houdini Mansion sessions when the guys tracked the original. Lots of eerie stories from those fast times in Laural Canyon. Anyway, it's a great song and you nailed it of course. Take it easy.
Holy shit this series is so perfect 😄
I have never seen this process before but ive heard it is one of the best ways to learn. Dude i want to pick up guitar now as a hobby and play these songs i listened to back when the days were good! This is cool af!
I like how you talk about how there was no internet or youtube years ago. When I was playing, that's exactly how I taught myself songs. By ear. It took a long time! Alot longer than you just demonstrated there! Well done man!!!
My ears can’t do like this.
Someday i want to learn fast like this.
You’re so cool ❤️
The problem with learning from Jim is that he forgets everything so most of his playing or guitar fills are improv lmao.
Exactly. He said it by himself that he plays their songs always differently on stage. 😅
@@AFK-Professor_Danger I think that mostly goes for the shreddy bits. I remember him saying that he kinda wings it while demoing the psychosocial solo, but in Stay Metal Ray's interview/rig rundown video at 33:30 he seemed pretty sure that he was playing it wrong. (and that online tabs are rarely accurate.) I think it's just a matter of some of Jim's parts (and some parts in general) being fairly subtle and buried in the mix. Those Jim playthrough videos are super cool to watch just because you hear a bit of the stuff that's not super obvious on the record.
Wow I didn't know this. Thanks for the Easter Egg ish stuff fellow maggots.
Still sounds sick though
Plus he's the rythym guitarist in this song I think so he's gonna be doing different stuff sometimes
you rock dude. this is so fun to watch
Love this series. Keep it up!
It sickens me how fast you learn songs by ear, it takes me forever! 😂
Gematria would be sic!!
One of the greatest songs ever created by Slipknot! Brilliant
Ok first off Ola I hope you read this comment ok!, I have never heard a guitar player tag and nail a song so fast and perfect like you just did! Your a freaking 12 level freakin 12!!! Mad Respect Bro
I like to think that he is so metal and playing so loud that the sound is actually what is moving his hair
Very cool to watch your process like this.
Now this is the perfect content, learning while you are learning is the best
Three nill and sarcastrophie are awesome songs to learn, so much riff variety
Easy song but damn it’s a good one. One of those bands that just makes consistently good songs. Like AC/DC. I could listen to the catalog all day long and be just as pumped as the first day I heard them hit me over the head with wait and bleed.
that was fun. more of these types of videos would be great.
Dude thank you so much for the tip about slowing the song down in settings. I never knew youtube could do that. Game changer
Slipknot - Dead memories
Such an interesting song to learn!
Good video Ola!
And damn fun to play (hard) on an western-acoustic guitar with more or less standard chords and standard e-tuning (or D).
People just go "What the f.......? On an acoustic??? " And all find it awesome, not expecting such songs can be played on "that kind of guitars" LOL
I started doing that with dead memories. It matches so good to that style playing.
@@fenrirsghost2051 That songs has so beautiful chords, with the acoustic too, another feeling. I love this song especially the melody at chorus part and the 2 solos, keep rocking 🤘🏼
How about an old opeth song from Blackwater Park or something? That would be cool as.
Yes! The Leper Affinity!
@@erikarnald419 I second that suggestion!
It would be a hour long video...!!!!
@@MickH60 And a glorious hour it would be!
How bout the drapery falls lol
Ive finally gone back and dug into youre past music with Feared and The Haunted, I have to say man you're crazy talented you should be more recognized as a great player, not that you arent already known, but even more, idk if you write the majority of the music but its definitely more tasteful and musical than most stuff out there
i wish nothing but to be able to play like you and understand every note by ear like that. You're amazing
Love this video series! So educational! Still waiting for you learning an In Flames Song from an era that you don't know that well! :)
(e.g. Cloud Connected, Pinball Map, I Am Above or something like that)
Come Clarity was one of the first songs I learned by them.
The opening arpeggios are still a go-to when trying out a new guitar
Tip: Add "isolated guitar" to the search for the song you're learning e.g. "DUALITY ISOLATED GUITAR". Hearing only the guitars makes it so much easier. There are a bunch of isolated tracks for Dream Theater on here, and there are some for Lamb of God, Pantera... Worth checking out ;)
This was fun to watch nice Vid thanks
bravo ola! that songs trippy to begin with 🤘🏻🤘🏻
In Flames - Crawl Through Knives next, such a amazing song and riffs!
I remember learning this song purely to impress the drummer of a band i wanted to play in. One of the best jams i've been a part of.
I'd love to see you try to learn Metabolic off of Iowa
"What? I can't hear that in the song" That's what happens when you have nine guys in a band
Love these!
You are the master Ola. I am learning this song by watching this video. I love your stuff man. Thank you from the USA
Jim Root is deliberately playing it wrong so that no one else can play this part except him)
Would love to see you learning "Gematria: The Killing Name" or "The Negative One"
got my drop b guitar out - learned along with you. This was fun! Thanks!
Excellent. I love these vids
Honestly, seeing you go for the more melodic rhythms of August Burns Red would be awesome! Check out their classic album Constellations, and you will be plenty surprised with how riffy their brand of metalcore is, and how technical it can be!
You can say whatever you want, but this song is and always will be legendary
Hey man it was totally cool to see you figure out the song by ear!! That is how I play to but not nearly at your level!! Totally thankful!!
Mano muito bom esse tipo de video. Continue a fazer mais desses videos pra gente, abre muito a mente e fica top pra toca em cima do Play Back. Show de bola irmao. 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
I remember from your interview with Per Nilsson where he told you he learnt the Meshuggah setlist by ear and it impressed you. Ola learns Meshuggah up next to match with the master? :D
I always thought slipknot sounded easy. That was before I started learning it. It's not the hardest but a lot of their songs are pretty hardish. Their timing is different from the standard. Imagine having to learn the drums to these songs by ear.
Most Drummers just learn by ear. Its how I learned and I can play prob 70% of. All slipknot songs :)
how is their timing different from the standard...? its all 4/4
@@watchlistenlearn and you probably play them 70% wrong.
@@andy_182 Why would I play them 70% wrong??
@@andy_182 Ive been playing drums since 1996. And Slipknot at 2000-20001. I think I know what Im doing..
I watched the whole thing with great pleasure I’m very glad you did it well love metal 🤘🎸
Good shit Ola, ur a legend. Picked that shit up quick🤘🏼
hey ola
Would love to see you try to learn Gematria next. That one sounds hard as shit. Watching Mick record some of it is crazy.
Rad setup Ola loving the wall of guitars. Cheers from South Australia
Great job re-lighting the guitar wall!!! Huge upgrade. 👏👏👏
May I suggest learning some new Trivium off the recently released album? It's kind of a banger by the way.
THIS!
Jim plays the songs slightly differently in live usually.
Niiice !!!! We want more of this type of video
I couldn’t have endured this without the fan blowing. It really set the vibe.
I cant remember what Lamb song you did but Omerta would be a great one for beginners. Its pretty straight forward untill you get to the oddball triplet pattern in the breakdown. But that section is usually hard more to overthinking than difficulty.
Walk with me in Hell.
@@Wulfron yeah i looked it up. I just didnt want to erase what i was writting look it up and come back lol. Thanks though.
Ola, please try Decapitated - Homo Sum. That intro riff is so sick. And very fast.
That would be awsome🤘🏻
I highly agree👆🙏🤘 Please OLA!!!
Agreed. Do it!
I that would be fun to watch
More thumbs up. Ola should see it 🎉😀
So glad I found this channel dude is a stud
I love this type of video!
Nailed the tone (a lot of it is in the playing, but there's also some gear research). Mycket bra jobbat.
