  • Soban in Los Angeles is known for their ganjang gaejang, a delicacy in Korean cuisine that involves the fermentation of raw crab in soy sauce along with a variety of herbs and spices. In this episode, host Matthew Kang pays Soban a visit in order to sample the dish, one that is not as common outside of Korea.

    When I was first served this, I was legit scared and concerned like how can we eat raw crabs. But then I saw every one else eating it and they must be okay so I dug into a little bite...insert fireworks in my mouth! Holy $hit, it was so good I couldn't remember anything else that good in a long time!

    if you try and eat raw crab without cooking or marinating, you're gonna get really sick. it's easy to marinate not long enough or too long and get very sick. i think it's important for people to know what it tastes like before making it themselves so that they know what it's like when safe.

  • @JforAll00

    the video made the whole process look simple and easy but dont wver try this at home by yourself. it is difficult and complicated i swear. in order to make the crab safe for eating raw the crabs are submerged into the soy sauce mixture and then you take them out to boil the soy sauce to kill any possible germs in it. after cooling the soy sauce you submerge the crabs again and the process is repeated at least three to five times. this is why the dish is so expensive. even in korea you have to pay about 40 dollars per one crab in general.

      @damianrhea8875 6 років тому +2

      YES! DIVINE! How do you know? My good friend gave me in San Francisco a piece that her family brought over for her from Hong Kong. Her family is a major foodie-- money helps to nurture good tastes-- & of Shanghai descent. The Shanghai Chinese version is a lot more straightforward, clean-tasting, salty though, yet sophisticated, adult, humourous & intoxicating in hedonism... What do you think if you have eaten it?

    • @ruim2495
      @ruim2495 6 років тому +2

      Damian Rhea Well I'm Chinese,I may not be a foodie but everyone love good food,a friend of mine brought me some crabs from a famous Shanghai private kitchen,and that's where I got to tried the best way to eat crabs.
      Private kitchen or 私房菜,is a special kinda restaurant business in China,traditionally,the chef,the waiter,the manager are all the same person,their home houses are usually their restaurant,and they usually have only 1 to 3 tables,if you want to eat there,boy you need to wait like 2 whole years,these people are making some of the best food out there,but their stuff are straight forward and pure,they don't make fancy stuff like a high-end restaurant,but their food won't lose to any of those restaurants,if you can get your crabs from one of those famous private kitchen in Shanghai?Baby that's like the best crabs you can ever eat,A Bite of China,the most famous Chinese food documentary on the planet right now,actually choose to film a private kitchen in Shanghai when it comes to the drunken crabs part instead of any of those fancy restaurants in Shanghai.

I don’t think it’s wrong to be “Americanized” cause you obviously also want to adopt the ways and culture of your home country however the parents should’ve also stressed more cultural teachings on the Korean heritages of their children at home (which isn’t always the case as I have people like my friend who is fully Korean but American and cannot speak a word of Korean.)

    Of course, for this publicity video, you are given the most complete crab in an impressive presentation. The night I went there, our table and the 3 next to us were served dark chopped pieces that seemed over-marinated in soy, also ridiculously overpriced. The other dishes were really not professional quality and overpriced also. However, the side dishes were very elaborate and well done. I say not to risk your time & money, for the same price, go for GOOD Japanese or Chinese restaurants instead.

      so, you tried it to make that assumption? everything depends on your taste and willingness to go beyond your mashed potatoes with steak. I never tried this raw crab, but it looks intriguing, would totally snack on that! be alive and try new things dude!
