  • lock cylinder removal, simple easy. YOU CAN DO IT!A faulty ignition lock cylinder in your Saturn SL2 can prevent you from starting the engine. This cylinder is the component where you insert your key and turn it to activate the electrical system and engage the starter motor. Symptoms of a bad ignition lock cylinder can include difficulty turning the key, the key getting stuck, or the engine not starting even though the key turns. If you suspect a faulty ignition lock cylinder on your Saturn SL2, here's a guide to help you remove and replace it.
Important Note: This guide provides a general overview. Specific procedures and component locations may differ based on your Saturn SL2's model year. Consult a repair manual specific to your vehicle for detailed instructions, torque specifications, and any additional procedures specific to your model. This process can be complex and requires some mechanical knowledge. If you are unsure about your ability to complete the task safely, seek assistance from a qualified mechanic.
    Tools Required:
    Socket wrench set (metric)
    Ratchet with extensions
    Phillips head screwdriver
    Flat head screwdriver (optional)
Torx screwdriver set (optional, depending on model year)
    Pliers
    Punch (small and pointed)
    Hammer (small)
Replacement ignition lock cylinder with matching keys
Steering wheel lock release tool (optional, may be helpful depending on model year)
    Safety Precautions:
Disconnect the negative battery terminal before starting any work on the electrical system to prevent accidental shorts.
Work in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling dust or fumes.
Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from falling debris.
    Ignition Lock Cylinder Removal:
Park your Saturn SL2 on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
Turn off the engine and allow it to cool completely.
Disconnect the negative battery terminal with a wrench to prevent electrical shorts.
    Accessing the Ignition Lock Cylinder:
The following steps will detail how to access the ignition lock cylinder on your Saturn SL2. The specific procedure may vary depending on your model year. Refer to your repair manual for exact instructions for your vehicle.
Lower Steering Column Cover: Locate the lower steering column cover (usually plastic) underneath the steering wheel. It might be held in place by screws or clips. Remove the screws or release the clips to access the components behind the cover.
Deactivate Airbag System (if applicable): Some models might require deactivating the airbag system before proceeding. Consult your repair manual for specific instructions on this step if applicable to your model year.
Remove Trim Panels (if applicable): Depending on your model year, there might be additional trim panels around the steering column that need to be removed to access the ignition lock cylinder. Look for screws or clips holding these panels in place.
    Disengaging the Shifter (Automatic Transmission):
Shift the vehicle into Park (P).
Press down on the shift lock button (usually located on the side of the shifter) while simultaneously pulling the shifter towards you. This will allow you to shift the car into neutral (N) without the engine running.
Insert a wedge or other suitable object to keep the shifter in the neutral position.
    Disengaging the Clutch (Manual Transmission):
Depress the clutch pedal completely and hold it down.
Have an assistant hold the clutch pedal down while you proceed with the next steps.
    Removing the Ignition Lock Cylinder:
Locate the ignition switch: This is the electrical component connected to the back of the ignition lock cylinder. It might be held in place by a few screws or a bolt. Use your socket wrench and extensions to remove the screws or bolt securing the ignition switch.
Disconnect the electrical connectors from the back of the ignition switch. Note their positions for reassembly later.
Locate the release mechanism: This is usually a small spring-loaded pin or a metal tab that needs to be depressed or pushed aside to release the ignition lock cylinder from the housing. Refer to your repair manual for the location and operation of the release mechanism for your specific model year.
With the release mechanism depressed, carefully insert the key into the ignition and turn it slightly to the "Accessory" (ACC) position. This might further disengage a locking mechanism within the cylinder. (Note: Do not force the key if it doesn't turn easily.)
While holding the key in the ACC position, use a small punch and hammer to carefully tap the pin or shaft protruding from the back of the ignition lock cylinder. This should push the cylinder out of the housing.
**Alternatively, some models might utilize a Tor

After wasting about an hour watching other videos while trying to remove the damn lock cylinder I found your video. You're the only person who mentioned unclipping and dropping the piece beneath the cylinder. I've removed these from other cars and never had any problems. It just wouldn't slide out period. It did come out when I used your suggestion. Thanks man! Nice job. I was late to work but at least I got there.

This is the only video that truthfully lets you know how to get the cylinder out. This video makes it very simple. He shows how the cylinder sits in at the end so you know where to push.

Thanks for the video. I just ordered a new cylinder and watching your video is way better than reading how to do it from a technical paper with illustrations.

In a 99 Saturn the part that holds the cylinder in is a slit with a piece that sits flush inside. you just need to push the inside part towards the cylinder and it will release.

Yay! I've been trying to get this out for two days. I was about to saw into the plate with the hole in it. Thanks to your vid, I removed the bottom pin with a screwdriver and used an allen wrench to lift up on the release tab on the cylinder. Great vid.

If you can't turn the key I learned a trick. You have to understand that the locking mechanism is basically a spring loaded "dead bolt." When you insert the key, it is supposed to relieve the spring tension which lifts the bolt. If you can't turn the key, its likely that the springs are full of debris. One option is to drill a small hole in the bottom of the cylinder housing (1/4" or smaller). This will expose the bolt so you can put upward pressure on it in an attempt to release it.

I just had the ignition lock cylinder on a 2002 Saturn SC2 re-keyed. I had to jiggle the key for a long time to get it to turn on. The key was badly worn. I am not saying this video is wrong, but that there are apparently lots of variations on the Saturns. Another video says that for a 2000 there is a hole on the top you insert a bent pick into.
The garage did not feel comfortable around the lock and the lock smith said if I took out the lock they would re-key it, as the key and the internals were both likely worn. There is small hole on the right side where you can insert a small allen wrench like you said. BUT the allen wrench pushes in on a detent that slides straight into the cylinder and allows you to pull out the cylinder. There is nothing on the left side.
I took the cylinder to a locksmith and they charged $50.

I appreciate the info about using the allen key to pry that pin up. But the one VERY important thing you forget to tell people and you should have done this as well is DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL. It is rare but air bags have went off accidentally when leaving the power on!!

@1:34 and @3:15 Can you remove that black box (with pin in it) under the cylinder, it has a cord coming out of it? I need to remove the column. I don't know how on your car, but mine is connected to the lock w/zip-tire. I don't know if it is supposed to be like that, or someone did a repair on it. The car was bought preowned. Thank you for the great film.
Update: I have Shop Manual for that car and found fm one description there that the black box might be roll connector (I don't know what it does exactly). They say:
On 2001 model remove roll connector by carefully disengaging plastic retainer tabs w/small flat ...
All that is in Steering Wheel location. In another place they say:
On vehicles w/automatic transaxles, connect park lock cable to ignition module (shown housing for the ignition lock cylinder).

What about if you can’t turn the key in there to ACC.
I took my key out too quickly and the lock cylinder seems to be jammed. Can’t turn the key or unlock the wheel. I think I may have to buy an entire assembly just to hopefully start my car. If. It I’ll be splicing or jumper wire it to start.

I also have a 2001 sl2 and i also have a full metal housing. This makes me believe that at some point the entire housing has been replaced with a modern one without that plastic piece. I've put in roughly an hour and a half just fiddling with the Allen key and I still have no success. Would love a reply if you've found out other tips. Will update if I've found out how to take out the stupid cylinder. (Why can't they make them last the life of the car)
