I have been going through videos to help my own understanding of the GM ignition cylinder, had a lot of problems with them recently in michigan. Some tips for those who plan to take on this task. You can tell by the large black plastic piece around the entire ignition (not the cap that he removes) that this truck has an anti theft chip and thus will Not start when you turn the ignition to On during this process! because of that, you can leave this truck in park to remove the ignition. On trucks without that black plastic (antennae) part, you MUST put the car into a gear where it cannot start, or remove the battery power to the truck so it cannot start. Because it will take you some time to pull the ignition out, if you keep it in the start position while the truck is in neutral or park you can damage your starter by keeping it engaged while the engine turns on.
Thanks for helping me understand how to pick the ignition in another way, and I hope that I helped someone else with this repair to not damage their vehicle.
Thanks...just bought a (no key) motorcycle from copart. In order to repair it i needed to ( pick the ignition) untill i get a new one....( bike was a gamble.....for once i won😊) now to turn salvaged title to rebuilt😊
I just got a abandoned 2010 Suburban I am going to try and pick the lock with the help of your video and get the key code . I do Marine repair for a living from one Trades Man to another excellent video I love how detailed you keep it and simple. I am not a lock smith I know nothing about this
best most detailed instruction video ever. Thank you!!
Thank you, I sat in my yukon today and thought surely this can be picked to put my new tumbler inside the ignition barrel. And you proved me right.
I didn't really need this but when I came across this video I found it compulsive viewing , and found the explanations very good , well done
Thankyou so much!! i was seriously losing my mind over this. you fixed it.
You're a good teacher. Thank you
This video is really the best! Thank you for share your knowledge!
Thank you for this comprehensive video wasn’t able to do chevey for years
Nice job!! I did this on a Honda Fit
Now my son's 2003 GMC needs to be done!!
Very good video that I'm sure helped everyone here, thanks!
I watched you do that then looked at my '06 chevy express and thought it has a ring that doesn't come off with 2 tabs to give you leverage turning it so I didn't need the vise grips. I pushed a small plastic wire tie into the area with the black bar and got it to go in quite a aways. (maybe an inch) Then after I lubed up the slot with wd, I just used a chevy key for a different van and about the third time in and out it turned! I put a rod in the catch removal hole and slowly turned the thing until I felt the give of the cylinder and it came out! i just needed to get the cylinder out so I could put in my cylinder from my non tilt column.
this technique should work for a 2011 chevrolet impala yes? ive taken apart the panels like in video and my ignition looks exactly the same so it should work.. i answered my own question lol jus to get the picks now..
Thank you so much for the information !!!!
Thank you for you comment.

Harbor freight has an orange handle hook and pick set. I use the weird angle tool included in that set to tension the sidebar and still rake the lock. I do not pull the cap off the end of the igniton because plastic gets brittle and could break. I also use a metal test key instead of using a transponder key if I'm not sure of the code or bitting. Cheaper that way so you dont waste transponder keys.
@williamc2553 I hate removing that cap- i feel like im gunna break the plastic on the immo ring. Is it difficult to insert the pick with the cap still on?? This would save so much heart ache
@pouncerminned863 No. The angled pick let's you get in behind it and still put enough tension on the sidebar to know when it's picked.
I am used to be an Auto Tech and anytime you work on the ignition system always disconnect your battery . This will stop any accidental starts and stop any issues with possible damage to electrical system or to you ECM .
Hey , you are Great !
You included so much small but important detail that others gloss over.
I think you are Excellent !

Hi I wonder if you could help me, I lost my Chevy Trailblazer LTZ 2003 key...I ordered a ac Delco ignition cylinder with 2 uncoded keys...I managed to pick key cylinder out and replaced it the one I ordered however it has not worked. I was wondering if you can help me please.
You have one for a 1997 Ford Thunderbird LX?
Is this actually cheaper then goings to dealership? I dont plan on buying a key machine....but lost keys on vacation...bought no key vars from copart ( repossessed vehicles) and it cost me 120 form dealer
thanks
100/100❤
Easiest way to get a key made is to go to a dealership with your registration and they can cut a key for it from that, you can program it at home by putting the key in the ignition for ten minutes and thirty seconds in the on position, remove the key, and within 45 sec repete above procedure again two more times
lol- this is for locksmiths-
Why do some you pick some ignition and others you dont you just use a hu100 . ?
THIS IS A GOOD THING? WAKE UP UA-cam
You don't need vicegrios to do this
OK
Oye compra el puler para sacar el plastico
gm has been using the sidebar since the about 1936
Does this also work with the laser key
Or do you need the hu pick
Hello and thank you for your question
My response:
It does not work on laser key.
But i did uploaded another 2 videos tutorials That show how to use the HU -100 pick.
Please go to my account in UA-cam and you will find it easily
Good luck.

Well Okay, you did the ignition on the on position but and forgive me if you look when you're moving that ignition like you're saying that little pin right there use a super small or I actually use them this damn little bitty knife I took and move the nation back I have to call her everything off like you did took the ignition back and I saw that pan so I put that thing there I pushed it in until I can move the cylinder forward kind of like taking a credit card to get into a door that and Bam so it didn't have to do all that other and well I do muscle some of my crap off thank you though I understand and I don't do them to get me in key cuz I lost my damn key like I said yes sir you did achieve your objective but check out that little pin I'm talking about I just use a little bit but believe me but it's strong enough that it would push the pain in I would push in on that pen then turn the cylinder bam she's good so thank you for the information on the key code and all that though and I watched that you did it and that's okay so good deal bro 💪🙏🍀🕊😄
what if the steering lock is engaged?
Cutting torch and sawzall 👍🎂
the steering lock does not really come into play here, in its proper function. So first try to pick it and if you're certain that you've successfully done so, turn the wheel all the way left, try turning the ignition, then turn the wheel all the way right and try it. Or, wiggle it back and forth while turning the ignition. If it doesnt turn after that, you've got a different problem (not fully picket most likely.)
Never never never put WD-40 in the ignition. It will ruin all the electrical wire and contained within in about six months.
They have much better lubricants that don’t attract dust dirt, they don’t have oil or none of that stuff either and definitely don’t use graphite on any locks
I use Houdini all day long with no issues!!!!
WD40 should be no where around plastic or rubber.
Your video totally kicks ass this is my second day working on it and after you're watching your video it took me about an hour from start to finish you rock keep up the good work. By the way love the detail how you pointed things out so just where they were and how they work made a world of difference
Ok?
Looks like you tearing sh....up
Are you teaching people how to steal cars????????😡😡😡😡
This process is VERY hard to do in the dark, and before you can get to this whole videos worth of work you have to pick the door lock (decently difficult) without someone noticing, then you have to tear the steering wheel cover apart, spend 5 minutes (most likely more) picking the ignition, successfully program a transponder chip to the cars anti theft computer which on GM cars takes 30 minutes (and a battery charger so the cars battery does not die) Or have a thousand dollar computer for locksmiths/mechanices, to shorten the time to 12 minutes.
As well, if you don't have the ability to hold still for 12 (or 30) minutes straight you instead have to cut the proper key for the ignition which is quite loud.
all in all new cars are much harder to steal than Just turning the ignition, and in the minimum time it would take (17 minutes) someone is sure to ask why a fellow is sneaking around in someones car. I get the cops called on me once in a while, even with my big locksmith van parked right next to it because someone gets concerned i may be stealing a vehicle.
