- Ignition Lock Cylinder
I've been asked a number of times how I code ignition lock cylinders for different vehicles. I never saw this as any big deal because I've been doing it for years. The parts guy asked me what locksmith I use, and I told him I do it myself. So I figured maybe a video might help others who are uncertain of trying to do this.
Most shops I know send the cylinder to a locksmith . Doing it yourself will save time and money. Nice video Joe.
Yes, from what I have been told they do. I prefer doing things in house when possible. Showing my age again? LOL
Did you do it?
Disable & remove anti theft protection in a 1998 ford expedition
nice work! just for the record, those "tumblers" are actually wafers! This is a wafer tumbler lock as opposed to a pin tumbler lock. If you get messed up, you can simply use a trial and error approach starting at the front of the cylinder, inserting the key and seeing if that wafer sits at the shear line (ie flush with the top/bottom of the cylinder). No need to panic :)
The trial and error was what I did the first time I had to replace my ignition cylinder. Pain in the ass, but a lot better than having it towed to the dealership so they could reprogram my PATS keys. Unfortunately, some low life tried to steal her again last night, so I'll be re-'wafering' a new cylinder this afternoon.
So you don’t need the old cylinder, just trial and error one by one?
A guy like me could make this work and save some money. Thanks for the lesson Joe. Hope to meet you soon.
Great video. I've wondered about how to do this but never learned how yet. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Seen a few videos on this ..yours is best one yet....thanks and great explaining...
That was a good video man. I haven't done one of those in a looooong time. Thanks for sharing.
Me either. LOL last one was a GM...a bit different, but the same basic concept.
Really helpful joe. Hope you had a good holiday
Thanks Chris! Same to you sir.
Joe where do you get the plastic cylinder tool to remove from lock barrel?
This was an interesting video. I have never seen this before. Thank you for sharing. New intro? I like it.
Thank you. I thought it may be useful to someone.
Not so simple Joe! I have the little tool to disengage the tumbler assembly from the lock cylinder, but it will not release and I can't get it out of the back of the lock cylinder. 2013 F-150. Followed the directions and your steps to release, but can't get it to. Can't figure out why? Seems simple enough, but I can't get it to work. Any suggestions?
Great video saved me lots of money wit the programing my key💪🏾
When you stop asking questions, you stop learning
Cool I haven't done a Ford yet, but I've done several Chryslers I usually tape my tumblers to a piece of paper in order as I take them out of the old one.
5 star my friend!!!
Joe, this video is about 2 years too late for me lol but it was cool seeing it done.
Sorry, I am a bit behind the curse.
Awesome I learned something new. Nice job. But that plastic key you said you have to have i asum that it does not work on every switch. If so haw many of them needed. One for every different switch made by each company? Or how dose that work?
I like your work area. It has all the things needed for a good work environment. A microwave and a package of cookies. Nice video.
Another great video, there is just one problem, I now want some cookies and I don't have any in the house! Haha
Come on down. We always have cookies!
Thank you Joe. Good job. I appreciate your videos.
Thank you Bill! Appreciate you watching!
thank you this helped save me money

Hey there what would I search to find the kit with all the necessary pins to recode my door locks on my 93 Dodge Dakota. Been trying to find a rekey kit or recoding kit but there's simply too much out there. I am no mechanic but have some decent knowledge on how to recode it but I'm having trouble finding a set of oem pins for my door lock cylinders. I live in Calgary, AB, Canada. Thanks so much! Any help will be greatly appreciated
I need a new switch and they told me they dont come with keys. Will my key work by doing this?
i bought the same cylinder kit that you're using with the same intentions, and that white plastic tool does not fit (its supposed to be compatible with my 2010 ford focus) any other ideas to get the tumbler assembly out of the housing?? i've been trying all night...
Hey Joe the tool you used to take out the inner cylinder, do you have a name for it or link? Been researching for two hours about this and have made it my mission to learn how to fix it myself next time. Thanks!
Tool came with the cylinder kit.
Do you know where I can get a uncoded lock cylinder for my 2000 Malibu? I am having problems with it locking up while trying to turn the car on! It only does it when I try to turn the car on in both the acc and run positions! It also doesn't help the face that I have a lot of knees on the same set of keys!LoL
I was needing to know how much the P.A.T.S. electrical box, wires, and ring where it goes to ignition switch.
I'd be calling the dealer for pricing.
@@JoesAutoElectric hey Joe electric...I got 2000 Ford F150 4.2L V6 basic no options,,no tilt column,no power locks,no cruise.I broke the little wire strip for anti-theft (PATS)The little box under column next to back where steering wheel goes, little green strip with 3 wires goes to ring that goes to key switch.

Reinstalled new cylinder now lights not on 08 expedition, any suggestions?
Magnetic tray for all the parts. Im rekeying the driver's door and trunk cylinfer. 2006 subaru sti. Need to order a key set for this model. No info on the specific kit
Nice job.Thanks.
Thank you too!
This was helpful
Hi Joe, where can I find little white tool
Tool comes with the cylinder kit,.
@@JoesAutoElectric apparently not all kits come with that special white tool. Just got a "LOCKSmart" kit from autozone, has everything but that release tool.
is that the dorman one? they come with the tumblers or you need the master kit
This is actually a Dorman unit, yes. The kit comes with the needed tool, the tumblers, springs, and grease. So yes, you buy just the kit and all is included.
Why can't you use the old tumblers in the new cylinder?? Is that a bad idea??
Just a wild guess but I’d assume you could have a ignition lock with two of the same and a door lock with just one. Idk
Where can you buy one for a Dodge Ram 1500
Can you re-code a cylinder using only the key? I don’t have the original lock cylinder.
A locksmith should be able to.
Thanks bro good looking out
What are these numbers on the tumbler for?
The key cuts
Work for 02 expedition 02?
What if you don’t have the old cylinder?
Then you'd need to read the key and code the cylinder to it.
@@JoesAutoElectrichow do you read the key?
@@edparungao5733 that's information for locksmiths to have.
thank you!!!
the Door was replaced on my F150 and the drivers side key didn't work thanks
