After first render, to get more of the meat smell out, put in fridge to harden, manage it out of the bowl, flip over and with a knife, scrap all the collected ‘meat and junk bits’ from the bottom. Reheat tallow, do it all again, you will get all the smelly bits out of the rendered product. You can even do a third time or more if you are still getting ‘junk’. It collects on bottom and can be scraped off! Love your video!
I did it 5 times!! I even used salt to purify it. And it still has beefy smell 😐 maybe I’m just too sensitive to smells. Hopefully it won’t stink in the balm later)
This is incredible!!! I love how it turned out, and the Calendula adds a beautiful fragrance, along with the other woodsy oils....this is now my favorite!!!!
I'm really kicking myself that I didn't come across your channel 3-4 weeks ago. My dad gave us a bear and I threw away all the fat 🤦♀️ (there was sooo much fat!) I never even thought about rendering it. I actually thought it was quite the process until I watched your video. It's pretty simple.
Thank you for sharing. I have Beef fat that I render and store for cooking my steaks it gives the meat a delicious flavor. Now I can use it to make other things like what are sharing.❤
Thank you so much for this instructive video. I rendered my tallow and looking for a way to do this. The internet is so confusing, but you made it so simple and easy to do. Thanks so much
Hi Katie I just came across your channel and subscribed. I have been rendering tallow for years and years for cooking (I'm 62 lol). I have recently wanted to make whipped tallow balm and a lot of the recipes I've seen use at least 4-6 cups of water plus a couple of tablespoons of salt when rendering the fat to draw out impurities. Then that is repeated 2-3 times to get rid of the odor. I was just wondering why you don't do that and just use the rendered down tallow for body creams? I have tried rendering with water and salt but I couldn't get it to whip up, everyone else could though lol!!!
Hmmmm! I've never heard of adding salt and rending it multiple times with lots of water. I could see how this would potentially help, but I personally don't think it's necessary. I've been doing it this way for years and it turns out lovely!
Ok so.. my beef tallow is now like what you have here. Mine is soft, butter like consistency and kind of grainy. It is not rock hard like you are describing. Was this frozen? What am I doing wrong?
With the calendula blooms, when did you start drying them? Did you have to pick them while they were blooming or did you wait until they started to wither on their own? Thanks!
The best time to pick calendula blooms is mid-day when the sun is out! That’s when the blooms have their highest medicinal qualities. They are quite sticky during that time of day :)
Leaf fat is from around the kidneys- you want that for skincare use. Itsmuchbeyter than back fat or other fat- but you can use those for cooking or making soap. Lard is from pigs
I tried this but my melted tallow/olive oil mixture wouldn’t harden again 🤷🏼♀️ I tried whipping it anyway and put it in a jar but the olive oil ended up separating from the tallow in my jar. Help please! What did I do wrong?
@@angelhorse9719 Yes, deer tallow smells a bit more strong than beef tallow, but it's still a great fat to use in this application IMO. The essential oils really helps to round it out. Just keep in mind that tallow smell will vary depending on the sex and age of the animal, how they were processed, etc.
@@thehomesteadingrd ok good to know. I was worried I burned the cracklings and that was causing the smell, but there were a few pieces that were still a little soft like yours so I didn’t think I did. Good to know that it will have a little smell!

Wonderful! I think rose petals might be nice too. Thanks for your careful instructions!
That would be a wonderful addition!
Just started using tallow, my skin is amazing, but so expensive to buy, thankyou as I'm going to start making my own.
I'm loving your channel. Awesome. Loving your recipes garden etc. ❤
Thanks so much! 😊 Looking forward to adding some gardening content soon! Almost there!!
I love this. I think I would use almond oil or jojoba oil. Thank you so much

Shooooot!!! Bear grease is supposed to be a great product. Next time for sure!

You're welcome and thank you for being here :)
Great video, I'm making this right now! Love your content! Just wondering about how long you ended up whipping this?
Yay! I'm so glad to hear that you're making some. I probably whipped it for 3-5 minutes.
Hi😊. How long can you store this balm for? I'm making some today 😊.

Glad it helped! 🫶🏼🫶🏼
Thanks for the presentation! Have you ever thought of or used fresh lemon oil (from fresh lemon skin) as an ingredient for fragrance?
How long will this store?
I’m amazing!! 🤩
Brazilian here 🇧🇷🥰
♥️♥️♥️
can you use castor oil instead of olive oil?

Love your channel. Could I use caster oil instead of olive oil for this balm
I don’t see why not!
@@thehomesteadingrd Thank you - from South Africa
i am hoping to try this this season after deer season!!
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
How is this stored? You mention it lasting through the winter; is it shelf stable?
Definitely it is.
Thank you so much for the awesome info. How do you store your Tallow Balm?
I just store it in a glass mason jar in our bathroom cupboard
What temperature does this need to be stored at? It is warm in the north east right now. I don’t want to liquify possibly.

It looks like you added 1 cup of dried blossoms?
omg I didn't even realize how much they sold for $15-$70 per 2oz!
Can you use avocado oil instead of olive oil?
I use avocado oil, it's great
Thank you so much❤
You're welcome 😊
Is it also called beef leaf lard and melt down
Leaf fat is from around the kidneys- you want that for skincare use. Itsmuchbeyter than back fat or other fat- but you can use those for cooking or making soap. Lard is from pigs
Does this need to be refrigerated?
Nope!
Could I use Coconut oil in lieu of?
Yes. Or castor oil. Possibly avocado oil too.
So we store at room temp not in fridge correct?
Correct!
I tried this but my melted tallow/olive oil mixture wouldn’t harden again 🤷🏼♀️ I tried whipping it anyway and put it in a jar but the olive oil ended up separating from the tallow in my jar. Help please! What did I do wrong?
That’s happened to me too!
Try cooling completely, then try whipping it again
How do find grass fed beef fat or tallow in my area of Michigan?
Call a local butcher- ask a farmer for a name if needed.
Does anyone know the shelf life on this? I heard it will start to oxidize due to the air whipped in. Is this true?
The raw form needs to be refrigerated, will last out in the open a few days and will need a preservative in the final product.
yesssss
Can you use coconut oil instead of olive oil?
No, it needs to be a liquid at room temp to get the texture right
@@thehomesteadingrdisnt coconut oil liquid at room temp?
@@sdgirlCookIt is solidified at room temp.
Could you do this with lard vs tallow?
You technically can, but the texture will be off and be greasy
wow old are you? your skin is beautiful
37 :)
Can you do this with pig lard?
You can but it comes out pretty greasy
❤👍nice!! I was thinking the same, is she going too lick the spatula!!
So tempting!!!
Does the tallow have any scent? You inspired me to use our deer fat for tallow for my first time this year. I think I need to try this now!

Where do you get your beef fat?
How much fat does it take to make one cup of oil?
4lbs of tallow is roughly 4-5 cups. 1 cup of tallow + 1/4 c. olive oil for the recipe in the video.
Can we use Deer fat?
You sure can!
