It amazes me how I have never even heard of this method of making moisturizing products. At 61, I have been really into skincare my entire life, and the last 5 years my focus has been how to simplify and only use affordable products. I just could not use another heavy, glass jar of moisturizer (1.7 ounces) and have to discard or find a way to reuse the jar. So funny 😂😂😂. I have 12 bottles of body lotion to use up. I've been using this "N" brand for over sixty years. I just learnt about tallow balm in the last fortnight 😅. My husband has drier skin than me so he's going to be using the tallow allover, while I'm going to use it on my face and hands and the "N" on my arms and legs 😅❤😅. My hands and face are so soft and smooth after just two applications 😊❤😊. Thanks to all tallow teachers out there 😊❤😊💐🌹💐.
I love this! It's so funny that this popped into my emails today because I was doing my second water bath with mine this morning. I normally hate "giving tips" in other people's videos, but in this case I thought it might be helpful. I love that you feed your chickens the leftover chunks, but in case you don't have chickens or dogs to feed it to, and you want to get everything out of the suet, I use my immersion blender to break it all down into a liquid form. I get way more tallow for my own use that way. I just do it in short bursts so it doesn't get clogged full. Thank you so much for sharing!! 💕
If you don't have one of those hand blenders, I found using a potatoes smasher helps, not as good as a blender of course, noteless I was surprised with the extra amount I got out of it.
I did this, was straight off the beef from butcher and i minced it to help it melt done easier. I processed with water twice and fed waste to chickens and was so happy with results.
Taste them before adding salt, tho. I did this method and was surprised how salty they were. Then I realized it was from all the salt I added during the process! 😂
You mentioned your mom, did you grow up in the same way youre raising your kiddos? Did Jim? Yall give me the warm fuzzies and i honestly admire you so much for the way youve chosen to live life 💗
Aw! You are so sweet! Actually neither of us grew up this way. We both had pretty typical suburban upbringings filled with processed foods and lots of TV.
I've never worn makeup, except for a bit of lipstick 💄. I'm 70 in November and I was told the other day that I look about 33-35. Whooohhhooo😅. What is my skin going to look like after using tallow balm😅❤😅.
if its in big chunks like that it takes far longer to completely render down, i typically spend a bit of time cutting mine into small chunks or run it through a hand grinder, cuts hours off the rendering time if you are trying to completely render it down, if you dont care about a loss then you dont have to do that. also if you heat up the tallow to 250 or so make sure to use hotpads.., have the jars in the oven warming to eliminate temperature shock, you then pour the hot tallow in the jar put the lid on tighten down the ring then let it cool down like you would while canning, it should can itself and will last for years wherever you store stuff.
Great presentation. The one thing I do differently is to add a small amount of propolis to the water and it smells amazing. Also I wipe out my pot with paper towel and throw it in the compost to avoid tallow going into the sink pipe and hardening over time. Will check out your other videos.
I used to make my own soap. I really enjoyed doing it. Got away from it, though. Your vid has made me see how beneficial and fun it is. I'd like to start doing it again.
As for getting that hardened circle of tallow from the pot: cut it in an angle with a sharp knife into two overlapping pieces. Then lift the "upper" piece with that knife and take it out with hands. It will leave an empty spot, where you can put your hand to take out the other piece easily. I haven't ever made tallow, but I did make lard many times via cooking in water.
This was fantastic! I've been curious for awhile now about how it's done. Not curious enough yet to google it or search YT, but it was coming! Thanks for this. I admire you and your husband for all you do and for teaching your children. ❤

Love this! I'll be sharing with my son. He made his own body balm with tallow, and his wife did not like the beefy smell. I think I'd like this even for my cooking. I follow a carnivore based diet, but I don't like that overly beefy taste that using the beef tallow I bought gives.
Loved your video! Thank you for explaining the process so well. One question, just wondering the right moment to add essential oils? I'm guessing at the last moment before pouring into jars? Thanks
This might have been asked before, but do you have an Etsy shop? Would love to support you and try out a tallow soap bar before committing to buying all the stuff to make this. We have 3 under 5 and would so love to switch to something natural! Thank you for your step by step and measurements!
I render both beef and pork fat. I use them for everything! I chop the fat into very small pieces though to get every last luscious drop of fat and I cook it down to crispy (not burned).
I just finished the wet method for the first time, then watched you again. Started with 6lbs of suet that came from beef on a regenerative farm. Not sure of the varietal. In and out of the crock pot 3 times. Each time on low for at least 2 hours. My first batch was strained into 1 pot and I placed in fridge 2 hours. When I took it out of pot it was soft and became a mash so tipped it all out and right back into the crock pot! 2 more hours then I used 2 pots to make 2 discs and in fridge 3-4 hours this time. These first 2 discs looked great. Still had an odor. 5-7 cups of water and 3-4tbs Redmond's salt. A little smell remains. 75% of this will be used to make tallow cream mixed with olive oil and maybe try some shea butter. I heard another UA-camr explain it's a great idea to keep the rendered tallow out at approx 70° for 2 days for complete drying. I placed my discs on a wire rack on my counter. I don't want mold and in the time of writing this message, little beads of water are forming on top of the discs. I can see how letting it sit a couple of day can be of benefit. I'll keep you posted on my lotion results. I'm a little worried that after processing this four times now it still has a pretty beefy odor.
Thanks for sharing your findings! That’s a great tip about leaving it to dry out. I wouldn’t say that the smell is 100% gone but it’s significantly reduced to the point where I really don’t notice it in skin care products (especially if you were to add any essential oils). I’ll be curious to hear your end results!
@@FromScratchFarmstead You're welcome! Today is the 2nd day the discs have been on the counter. Time to store them and make some lotion. No essential oils since they are usually all oxidized and I can never be sure of the process and if they are cut with awful seed oils. Just as pure and fresh an olive oil I can find. Olive oil is also a tricky business and the smaller the portion sold (4, 8 or worst, 16oz bottle), the better since they oxidize pretty quickly. I may whip some too.
@@ZebrajellyfishphotoHow did it turn out? I bought some organic grasfed beef tallow from Fatworks hoping to make it into tallow balm but the beef smell was so strong and off-putting. I tried mixing essential oils and jojoba oil in it to see if it would cover the beef smell but it didn't. I will try your wet method tomorrow...and see how that goes.
Thank you! Not silly. This can be tricky. Usually, I run it under hot water and get what I can off first then we do wash ours in the washing machine and hang to dry.
I would love to use tallo soaps but my water makes my skin so sticky like after rinsing. I pray the creams don’t. I’m gona give that a try. I like your clear explanation.

Hi there. I am just getting into this and your video is so helpful. Are there any tips in the cleaning of the implements? How do we properly clean out the cheese cloth and utensils so that they are clean but we don't clog our drains?
Hi! Good question. I just use hot soapy water. We will do cheesecloth in the washing machine after it's been thoroughly rinse out with hot water. Thanks for watching!
I've always stored it in the bathroom. That's a good question. I don't see why you couldn't sub the olive oil for castor oil but I haven't tried it myself!

I want to try to render it. My question is, is there special parts of the fat surrender or any fat will do from the animal Rendering dear fat any different than beef fat? Thank you again for your time and sharing your talent. I can’t wait to try this And to hear from you.
Thank you!! I don't have experience rendering deer fat so I'm not sure about that. The fat around the kidneys is the prized fat (this is called suet from beef or leaf fat from pork). That's what we always look for!
Hi there. I just found your channel and subscribed. I love how you and your husband explain everything in your videos. I have a couple questions. Do you have any links to pure olive oil & could I use your dairy recipes with store bought milk ? I live In the mountains of Montana and I can't find anyone that sells raw milk around here. Mostly beef ranches .😮 I think I'm gonna just Binge watch your channel tonight lol God bless your little family. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!!
Hi! Thank you so much! Here's the link to the olive oil we buy but not sure she ships much, mainly sells locally. www.mavrasgreekoil.com/ Many of the dairy recipes can be made with store bought milk! Thanks so much for watching and being here! We really appreciate your kind words!
@fromscratchfarmstead, I just found your channel, thank you for sharing the gifts God gave you! I have a question, I've used the wet method about 7 times now, with salt and a few times with baking soda, my beef fat suit is still a bit smelly, not beefy smelling, just a smell....is it normal to still have a "smell" or should it be completely odorless? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated before I start making it into an infused tallow.
Hi! Good question. I think having a slight smell would be normal and that once you mix it in with other ingredients in a salve or soap, you don't notice the smell. Sounds like you're doing a great job!! Thanks for watching!
Hello! I have a few questions: could you use a lower grade salt? Dietarily we are picky but do I need to be with this. It's just getting so pricey. Also when you are using your shampoo bar in the shower do you notice any residue on your shower from using it? I use to buy a local bar soap to use at all our bathroom sinks and stopped because of all the build up. Thank you so much! I love these videos!!!!!
You probably could use a lower grade salt on this. We buy the bulk 25 lb bags of Redmond real salt so that’s what we use. We haven’t noticed any residue and have been using it for about 5 years! Thanks for watching 😊.
Hi this is really cool, I was looking at this expensive skin care brand that mentioned they use (mineral salts) in their lotion, so I guess my question is does the salt ever stay in the tallow once it hardens? I’m wondering if Celtic salt would add more of those minerals for skin care :)
That’s a good question! It definitely can’t hurt. I’m sure some of the salt would be present potentially adding trace minerals back in. Without testing it would be hard to know how much. Thanks for watching!
I was wondering about your balm: have you thought about using (purified) chicken fat instead of olive oil? I have recently made a batch of chicken fat by storing fatty pieces in a freezer. I use it for cooking. Anyway it's really liquid-ish and seems to make skin really soft. I understand that your recipe is a well tested one, but I'm somewhat an experimentator and since you seem to own chickens, I had to ask :)
Sure! You should be able to freeze it for several months. It will also last for several months in the fridge as long as there is no moisture. Thanks for watching!
@@FromScratchFarmstead thank you from the bottom of my heart! Xoxo 💋 Lady Flow ever want a song jingle for your channel lemme know and I’ll hook ya up Thanks again!
I followed your instructions and tried this twice, but I couldn't get the tallow to solidify like yours. I even left it in the fridge for over five hours, but it remained soft. Do you have any idea what might be going wrong?
Was it hard all the way through or just on the top? I've found the top part can be softer and that's what I scrape off but the underneath part has always been firm. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this presentation! I made my first batch of tallow/shea butter based whipped lotion but want to render tallow I have in the freezer and purify it as you demonstrate. Can you please tell me what the bamboo looking device behind the crock pot is? Is it a water purifier?
I think her left over tallow was from a previous rendered batch. So yes, it was rendered. I have always called it suet before rendering and tallow after rendering.
So I am new to tallow and understanding how to make it, etc. But one question I have is you mentioned about getting the toxins and impurities out for skin care. With those toxins and impurities affect you when you make tallow for cooking because I’ve never noticed anyone rendering it this way for cooking. Is it OK With not taking the toxins out when you use it for cooking?
The recipes are all on our website and there should be links in the description of the video. We should turn them all into an e-book one of these days! Thanks for watching!
@@FromScratchFarmsteadthank you, I am disabled and am looking for a printable version. The videos are fantastic - it's just very painful for my hands to write. I look forward to an ebook someday! God bless you and your family!
Mine didn’t get as hard as what you show… it was firm when first taken out of the refrigerator but became pretty soft once left out. Any idea why? I “purified” the batch using the wet method you describe which practically eliminated the odor and its creamy white but softer than I expected.
Did it firm up overtime when you put back in the fridge or stay soft? I've never had that happen so I'm not sure why. I'm glad it worked well to eliminate the odor. Thanks for watching!
@from scratch farmstead Beautiful vid, I love the babe on your back! Curious -- what brand of woodstove is this in your kitchen? I would like to research them further, to possibly purchase for my Home
@@FromScratchFarmstead I learned that it is important to make sure any infusion is completely dried before becoming part of the lotion to avoid moisture in any batch.
That's a good question. I don't know how schmaltz would do and I don't have experience with wild game fat although I've heard amazing things about bear fat. Lard would definitely work. Thanks for watching!
Good morning 🌄 from NZ. My husband and I have just started to use tallow again after 40+ years of using oils and butter in our cooking. I rendered my own tallow and lard this last week and we're loving it. However, since I've been cooking with it I have gone from washing my hair once a week, to every second day as it is this normal after going back to fat? Google just gives me alot of useless answers that are heart and health scary. We're almost 70 and want the best, healthiest lifestyle. We're eat pretty much the Mediterranean diet but use fat for cooking and baking, but olive oil for salads and marinades. I would be grateful for any answers I can get from anyone here ❤😊❤.
Kiwi here.... 💚. I notice a butter smell on my skin when I eat butter. My dad had problem skin and his doctor advised him to consume as much plant oil as he could to moisturize. He used rice bran oil. He lived to 90.
I always find when making any significant dietary changes, it's best to give your body several weeks to adjust. It's hard to say after just a short time. I've never heard of that though personally. Thanks for watching! :)
I don’t really have access to raw beef tallow from a butcher so I purchased some from Amazon. I like the texture it has for moisturizing but the slight odor that it still has is putting me off. What can I do to make smell like a normal body or facial moisturizer? What kind of safe essential oil can I melt it with again? Thanks
You could try running your tallow through this process or adding any essential oil of choice - lavender, etc. We always go to plant therapy for info/purchasing essential oils. Thanks for watching!
It's an AGA. We found ours used off of fb marketplace :). Ours runs off of gas. We have a few more videos that go into more detail about it specifically!
Oh, good question! Just for our family I'd probably only need to render around 5 lbs for the year. If we are making for a lot of other people too we'd need to do more. Thanks for watching!
Good question! This is another video we did one rendering lard but this is the dry method and how we render fat if we will be using it for cooking. ua-cam.com/video/Etb1fTWWVIg/v-deo.html

Rendering dear fat any different than beef fat?
Mostly beef ranches .😮 I think I'm gonna just Binge watch your channel tonight lol
God bless your little family. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!!
Hi! Thank you so much! Here's the link to the olive oil we buy but not sure she ships much, mainly sells locally. www.mavrasgreekoil.com/
Many of the dairy recipes can be made with store bought milk!
Can you add scents or essential oils to whipped tallow?
Another great video, thanks!
Yes, absolutely!
That's an interesting question that I've never considered. I use it for cooking as well but not sure I'd use it for skincare. Thanks for watching! :)
I use grapeseed instead of olive oil and a little more. I cream it together like I'm making frosting.
Loving this!! Question though, can you freeze it in portions? If so, how long do you think it will keep there? Many thanks and God bless! ❤️
Sure! You should be able to freeze it for several months. It will also last for several months in the fridge as long as there is no moisture. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing. I am going to try it myself
Awesome! I hope it goes well! Thanks for watching!
Does any of the salt remain by adding salt to every cook? This looks beautiful!
The salt should dissolve in the water. Thanks for watching!
Wonderful ❤ soo grateful for your information ❤ magnesium lotion is a life saver ❤ do u have a recipe for this one? Xoxo 💋
Yes! Here's the recipe for our magnesium lotion. fromscratchfarmstead.com/diy-tallow-magnesium-lotion/
@@FromScratchFarmstead thank you from the bottom of my heart! Xoxo 💋 Lady Flow
ever want a song jingle for your channel lemme know and I’ll hook ya up
Thanks again!
Excellent video. Thank you!
You're welcome!
Love your content! So you sell your product on Amazon? Do you have brand name that you trust and recommend?
Thanks! We always just get it from local farms or butchers.
Do you have to store your tallow balm in the fridge? Or is it self storage safe ?
We keep at room temp!
Suet was specific to kidney fat from beef cattle.
so easy! thanks for breaking this down with a visual as well. gonna give it a try soon! :)
Awesome! So glad this was helpful!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge ❤
You're so welcome! Thanks for watching!
Can I cook with it or is this for cosmetic usage only?
You could do either!
Thank you for this presentation! I made my first batch of tallow/shea butter based whipped lotion but want to render tallow I have in the freezer and purify it as you demonstrate. Can you please tell me what the bamboo looking device behind the crock pot is? Is it a water purifier?
It's the Nutrimill Harvest (a grain mill)! Thanks for watching and glad this was helpful!
THANKS! @@FromScratchFarmstead
You used left over tallow. For the balm. Does it have to be rendered ? Then to add the olive oil.
Here's the recipe for the tallow balm with all the details! fromscratchfarmstead.com/tallow-balm/
I think her left over tallow was from a previous rendered batch. So yes, it was rendered. I have always called it suet before rendering and tallow after rendering.
Very informative, thank you.
You're welcome!
That's a really good question! I've always used the dry method for cooking too but I'm curious to look into this more!
Thank you for these videos! Do you have an ebook with your skin care recipes/processes? Have a great day!
😊
The recipes are all on our website and there should be links in the description of the video. We should turn them all into an e-book one of these days! Thanks for watching!
@@FromScratchFarmsteadthank you, I am disabled and am looking for a printable version. The videos are fantastic - it's just very painful for my hands to write. I look forward to an ebook someday! God bless you and your family!
Isn't suet, specifically the fat around the kidneys? Maybe I'm wrong.
Yes u are right..
Watching this 5months Later-9/17/24 Another ECLIPSE DAY🎉
WOW WOW FEELING GOOD ABOUT THIS
THANK YOU!💕🕯️☕️👋💐
Ha! How ironic! Thanks for watching!
Does the tallow need to render until the bigger chunks sink to the bottom of the crockpot? I have about 4lbs, how many hours did yours take to render?
The first time is longer, maybe I did 4-6 hours. The subsequent times are much shorter. Thanks for watching!
Can you render with the wet method and use some for cooking and some for skin care?
Yes, absolutely!
I have done dry render and next we are doing wet render. I can't stand the smell so wee will don it done the garden
Thank you for the video
You’re welcome! 😊
This is probably a silly question, but do you reuse your cheese cloth?
We do! We rinse it goo and wash it!
We don't use olive oil. Is it ok to use cold pressed organic caster oil instead?
I’ve never tried castor oil in this but avocado oil would be a comparable substitute!
Castor oil sounds like an excellent idea! Thanks for the suggestion ... it's so good for the body, as I'm sure you know.
Can I use a pressure pot or a normal pot
You could do it in a normal stock pot just watch it to make sure it doesn’t burn. Thanks for watching!
@from scratch farmstead Beautiful vid, I love the babe on your back! Curious -- what brand of woodstove is this in your kitchen? I would like to research them further, to possibly purchase for my Home
It's an AGA. Our actually runs on gas instead of being wood burning. We found it on fb marketplace! Thanks for watching!
Great info…. Now to find beef suet….
Thank you! I hope you can find some!
Can it be used in oily/acne prone skin?
Good question! Curious to hear others thoughts on this. My skin tends to be drier.
Hi, do you sell your tallow products?
If not, do you have a suggestion for where to buy them?
Thank you!
Hi! We'd love to but unfortunately our family doesn't have the capacity at this point. I'd look on etsy!
Have you ever thought of or used fresh lemon oil (from fresh lemon skin) as an ingredient for fragrance?
That would be lovely! I always use citrus in our homemade dish soap so that would be a great addition :)
@@FromScratchFarmstead I learned that it is important to make sure any infusion is completely dried before becoming part of the lotion to avoid moisture in any batch.
May I render schmaltz & wild game fat in the same manner? Is this also nourishing to the skin, or only specifically beef tallow?
That's a good question. I don't know how schmaltz would do and I don't have experience with wild game fat although I've heard amazing things about bear fat. Lard would definitely work. Thanks for watching!
Can I use tallow on skin if I have an allergy to mammal protein?
Good question! I’m honestly not sure how you’d react to fat if you are allergic to the protein.
Ty!❤
Can adding salt make the tallow salty?
The salt dissolved in the water! Thanks for watching!
Have you ever used lamb fat? Would the process be the same?
I'm guessing it would be but I honestly haven't tried with lamb fat before. Thanks for watching!
@@FromScratchFarmstead thank you for the information.
Can an essential oil be added
You can definitely add essential oils to whatever you will be using it to make! Thanks for watching!
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Does the salt go into the tallow? I have to consume low sodium. Does this alter the nutrition of the tallow?
I believe the salt would just dissolve in the water. Thanks for watching!
I am interested in your stove. Would you please provide information about it?
It's an AGA. We found ours used off of fb marketplace :). Ours runs off of gas. We have a few more videos that go into more detail about it specifically!
I’ll look for those - thanks so much for the responses.
How much water rendered tallow do you use a year for your family's homemade products?
Oh, good question! Just for our family I'd probably only need to render around 5 lbs for the year. If we are making for a lot of other people too we'd need to do more. Thanks for watching!
How would you do this if you want yo use tallow for cooking? You do the same process as making skincare or you just render once?
Good question! This is another video we did one rendering lard but this is the dry method and how we render fat if we will be using it for cooking. ua-cam.com/video/Etb1fTWWVIg/v-deo.html
My local butcher is asking $3 a pound. How does this compare to prices elsewhere? I am in very north Florida.
I don't think that's a bad price! It can vary so much depending on where you are but I've heard from some others much higher price points.
Can castor oil be mixed with the tallow?
I think that would work for the tallow balm but haven’t tried it myself! Let me know if you do!
I add castor oil and essential oils and whip it. It’s beautiful
