Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead: A 90s Cult Classic?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 кві 2024
- It was a movie with a questionable title. A lot of critics were rough on it. Gene Siskel even called it one of the worst movies of the year. It came and went in theatres with few movie-goers paying any attention. But in the years since its release, it has become a beloved cult classic. With a legion of fans that love quoting its memorable lines. Some of its youngest viewers were drawn in by what they saw as a wish fulfillment concept: What would you do if the babysitter croaked on the first day of your mom’s vacation... so you had the house to yourself for two months straight? We get to see what the Crandall kids would do in the 1991 comedy Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead - and it’s time for this one to be Revisited.

To this day I'll sometimes exclaim "the dishes are done, man!" when the dishes are done.
I didn't see your comment when I made mine, and it is damn near the same. Almost 35 years later.
I started saying that as a kid when they showed the original trailer on TV when the movie came out. 🤣
OMG same!
Same here !
Same😁
Man, Christina Applegate at her prime was something else
Big Fact
She's was my first crush growing up watching Married with Children, and this being my favorite movie at the time. My friend and I watched this movie on VHS so many times we ruined the tape. Lol
Christina Applegate and Alicia Silverstone were the two girls I had my first crush on in the early to mid 90s. Who'd of thought I'd grow up to marry a Danish girl with blue eyes and blonde hair lol
Indeed she was incredible during this time and I think she's still beautiful considering her age and illnesses.
@@Alexvander10 I agree, those beautiful green eyes will never stop mesmerizing me even with the passage of time.
A cult classic that doesn’t need a modern remake!!
I didnt even know they made one 30 years later. Shows how trash it was..
Yeah , I looked up the movie listing and to no surprise there the movie title Don't tell Mom...and I see it's yet another remake. Hard pass.
They are going to ruin this ip as well
I was going to say don’t jinx it! Did they really make a remake? Like honestly, I’m not surprised, but this is one of those movies that you don’t!
Everyone knows Hollywood Doesn’t have an imagination! Even companies like Disney started off with regurgitating someone else’s ideas/stories
@@Dr_Larken The internet has killed imagination.
The other day my assistant said "I'm right on top of that James." I asked if she said that because of this movie. It was. We became instant work friends.
you have an assitant? what do you do?
“I’m right on top of that Rose!”😂
My favorite line!! lol
Just a fun movie, mindless entertainment that’s all. Prayers for Christina Applegate because of her numerous health issues.
Amen
Ah, yes. The ol' disingenuous virtue signaling. She'll be fine, she's rich. You're not. Worry about yourself.
@danbauer3669 I would pray for anyone who has health issues, whether they are rich or stupid. So I would pray for you, too.
@@docsamson198 being stupid and being an asshole are two completely different things. Thanks for your concern.
@danbauer3669 No worries. Still think we shouldn’t be concerned or hope for the best for someone with health issues regardless of their financial status? Or do you think anyone who has money than you deserves their suffering?
To this day, I still ofen say, 'the dishes are done, man', whenever I finish something.
Me and my sisters still use that in our 40’s
I've said that a thousand times too, Metallica breath. I worked in a kitchen.
Me too.
Same
“She’s crocheting this massive doily for the couch..”
😂❤
One of my favorites as a kid. Serious nostalgia ice cream sandwich. "waking up at the buttcrack of dawn!" Genius. Love it.
“I appreciate youuu!”
“Eat Sh!t!”
That part still makes me crack up to this day
He was mad about being a house wife even though he was good at it.
The delivery was perfect. 😂
"Dishes are done, man."
"TV Rots Yer Brains!!!!!"
You know when actor Keith Coogan dies.. Some jokester will put down on his gravestone.. "The Dishes are Done, Man!" 🤣🤪
I was definitely one of those kids who watched it repeatedly on HBO. I loved it, and like many, I still use lines like "The dishes are done, man!" and "I'm right on top of that, Rose!" In fact, I still use the latter many times in various office jobs I've had in my life. In fact, I feel like I have to go watch it now after seeing this video, lol.
ME TOO!!! HBO owes this movie some props because they wore this movie out!!
That’s the only reason I watched this growing up!
"She went to the, Yarn store..." 🤣
I love it when Kenny says “Fuck” after the plant falls🤣🤣🤣🤣
I was just a kid when this came out, but my older sister liked it so I grew up with it and to this day, I still say "dishes done, man" when I finish them.
Whenever someone asks me to do something, i always say "I'm right on top of that Rose" 😂
Classic underrated comedy of the early 90s
two things that i wanted to see, was the kind office worker, Kathy, who gave Sue support when she started her job, getting a hell of a promotion, when Sue told Rose, how great she was, and that nothing Sue did, could have happened without Kathy. And i loved how the brother Kenny stepped up, and grew up, and made it clear he was going to work hard in school and dedicate himself. i always saw, Sue become a top fashion executive, Kenny being a hell of a famous chef,
The dishes are done, man…. I stilll say that sometimes. No one knows the reference though.
Saw it in theatres in 91 when i was 14 years old. I have a bit of nostalgia for it lol. Fun movie....
Same here 👍
@@ProBreakers Cool. 33 years ago 😭 lol
@@RAGING_MIRAGE yep, time does seem to get away from you.
I always loved watching this movie as a preteen. It was just the goofy escapism that we needed to while away 102 minutes. My sympathy goes out to Christina Applegate following her recent Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis. 💔
She's also had a double mastectomy from breast cancer, so she's been through some extremely tough situations. She's easily one of the strongest women from my generation, and she's handled it all with class, never the victim.
I remember watching this one back when it came out. I was a kid and the title was what drew me to the film in the first place. Ended up loving it and watching it multiple times.
"The dishes are done!"
Keith Coogan is the grandson of Jackie Coogan, the 1960s Addams Family Uncle Fester, Jackie Coogan. Had mom not come home that night she did, I could see this movie going into its third hour. I enjoyed it so much that I was sort of bummed out that mom came home, which ended their caper.
This is and always has been one of my 10 favorite all time movies. And what you said about Kenny’s character IS EXACTLY spot on. Seeing his evolution in this movie made me want to do better in my life. (That’s not even a joke)
this movie
doesn't need a remake
Exactly. Unfortunately, Hollywood thinks it did 😒
No bs, just when things started to get a little dull around here, BAM! JoBlo saves the afternoon 🤘 manythnx as always
11:33 Well said! I always loved this movie. And sometimes I still break out the line "the dishes are done man!" But never after doing the dishes.
"I should've been reading him Green eggs and ham or some shit."
Fa......... Rrgorttt
One of my all-time favorite movies of the 90’s. I’ll never forget the line. “I’m right on top of that, Rose.
Can you do a video about the legend of Billie Jean, with Christian and Helen slater, or over the edge with Matt Dillon? Those are both my favorite 70s/80s “kids running wild” type films
I actually just watched both these movies back to back yesterday. Weird.
I got a call from the office on my day off. I was washing dishes, so i put the Supervisor on hold, rinsed the last pot and dried my hands. I got back on the line and said OKAY - ( we both said) Dishes are done, man🤣
I rewatch this as an adult, thinking that it wouldn’t be as good as when I was a kid. I was pleasantly wrong. This still works, and I have no idea why Siskel and Ebert gave this thumbs down.
"TV rots your brains!"
This was such a great line to turn us kids against her... in hindsight it was also very true.
This and Adventure in babysitting are two guilty pleasures
I remember it being on HBO a lot . I remember watching it and likening it. I haven’t seen it years. But it brings back good memories.
First seen this movie when i was Turning 16 in the summer of 1992, All us young guys were in love with Kelly Bundy , I bought this movie from UA-cam a couple years ago and added it to my collection, Still as Great a movie at 47 as it was at 16❤
That's odd this coming up as I just saw Lucio Fulci's The House by the Cemetery in which a babysitter got slaughtered by a literal pain in the neck.
80s kid here, was 10% in love with Christina Applegate, saw it in the theater opening weekend with friends and still quote: "Dishes are DONE, man!" I don't think my kids have any idea where this saying comes from. Killer money and am still looking for "Petty cash" at every place i've worked.
To this day I use, "I'm right on top of that Rose!" on a weekly basis haha
I remember the movie being heavily advertised when in theatres but just like most people i didnt watch this one until the next year on home video. And it would play on cable a LOT. Absolutely loved it and still do.
Loved this movie since childhood, and yes, I was definitely part of the “Wait, what is this odd-titled movie I’m stumbling upon on HBO…lemme check it out” crowd (also Applegate being hot as hell). On a side note, I’ve never gotten the “I’ve never been to Santa Barbara” line”-is it supposed to be Swell outright doesn’t know what an orgasm is (somehow), a pun in there I’m missing, a California in-joke…?
Awesome Vid!
Thank You very much for Your Work! Greetings from Germany
I have watched, Risky Business so many times & love it bu,t never this film. It sounds like great fun & Christina & her outfits look stunning! Retro 90's clothes rule! I am going to put it at the top of my list of films to watch!
"What is it Carolyn? Something?"
The title caused my parents to not let me watch it when it came out thinking it was another mindless horror film. I didn’t finally see it til I was an adult and was shocked by it.
When it was released, I rented this movie as soon as I could. I would not have quickly rented “The Real World.” The title was key.
I gotta give props to Jayne Brook as Carolyn. She was so great at making you hate her. Also, I just recently realized that she played Mrs. Sullivan, the mother of Zach the abused boy in Kindergarten Cop. She looked so different but chalk that up to the wardrobe since in Don't Tell Mom she's wearing high fashioned business suits and in Kindergarten Cop she's dressed more homely and suburban. Power of costuming!
"The dishes are done Man".... 😆
Mrs Sturrack was scary af 😳
7:00 - the lime "dad doesnt care......" , may have worked in movies for Boomer dads and older generations. but by Gen X, us dads would say "we care too much!!! " and would have ruined the plot if made more recently, lol.
This film is a 90s classic i hope some boutique labels should release this on 4K and Blu-ray maybe Shout! Factory or Vinegar Syndrome would get the right to this film and release it on 4k and Blu-ray with a new 4k restoration from the original camera negatives or innerpositive for that release this film need a 4K/Blu-ray treatment now.
Joblo please do a Revisited Video on Pump Up The Volume and River's Edge
You Guys Are Awesome
I just watched this movie recently and it is so good! One of my new favorite coming-of-age films out there!! I didn’t need to grow up in the ‘90s at all to enjoy this!
Also, Christina Applegate is so beautiful in this one! 😍😍
3:33 anytime I see her I think of Michael Myers! The original, NOT Rob Zombies passion project! It wasn’t bad, but it also isn’t part of the lore of Halloween!
I ...absolutely Love that movie!!
Danielle Harris was my second Hollywood crush. Wish Upon A Star reinforced that crush.
I totally forgot she was the one who played the younger sister in this movie!
"Park it yourself, Metallica breath" 😂❤
We all love you Christina!!!
One go my most watched movies in the post USSR 90s on a bootleg VHS. I wish I never knew that they made a remake of this classic.
I remember watching this movie on fox, TBS and max because this has it moments, I remember I ask my mom I want to be a fashion designer but that was my dream
Call Shout, Arrow or Kino and get this thing a 4k remaster with a collector's edition release!
I watched this on basic cable quite a while back. The title caught my eye. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Not every movie has to be the absolute greatest thing. Fun stories like this are what are supposed to be explored and done.
Although I am glad this didn't turn out into some kind of franchise.
This was one of the greatest movies ever made.😂😂😂
We still quote lines from this film to this day.
Did the show the SHAMELESS , copy the plot?
Ahhh yes. That movie that showed us how useless our boomer parents really were...
I still say " the dishes are done man" and my wife has no clue lol 😆 😅 😂
Man I loved this movie back in the day!! Still remember the grundel run.
It's a classic film 📼 The remake will suck 😵😵💫🥴
Sometimes reboots and remakes just missing their mark from the old classic styles. 😊
I'll sometimes say "I'm right on top of that Rose!" at work & people just look at me!
Seen this at the $1.50 movie theater we use to have in my home town as a kid. Then a bunch on HBO . Loved it then and still love it today.
OMG I loveee this movie, I watch it every couple of years. In fact I searched for it and watched it like 2 months ago. Every time my boss asks me for something I say I'm right on top of that! but in Spanish because I'm from Argentina :D
No no no to Winona or Justine as Suellen Crandle! Only Miss Applegate was right for that part ❤
The dishes are done man!!!😂😂😂
I wonder if Ed O Neil legitimately wanted Applegate to further her acting career to the point he was looking for good scripts for her.
Don’t know about that but…. He really was like a dad to her according to both
I use the phrase "buttcrack of dawn" because of this movie lol
this is in my top 5 movies I loved to watch when I was a kid..there is only a hand full of movies that I would drop everything to watch when it was on
Here's Hoping that Christina Applegate is Doing well and Feeling Alot Better 😊👍😊👋🖖🖐🖖🍁
The dishes are done man lol will live forever 🔥🔥
Absolute classic. I was in middle school when it came out and it was a movie I watched over and over on HBO.
I never knew they did a remake
Christina Applegate is an Angel 😍
I watched this movie over and over in the early 90s when I was like 7-10. Ironically enough, it was with my babysitter’s kids cause I spent a lot of time away from home at that age. My mom wasn’t on vacation tho, she was working a ton of overtime so we could survive.
RIP Christopher Pettiet, also remembering his classic The Goodbye Bird
I found this on dvd a couple of weeks ago at the thrift shop!
The 90s is full of classics. Many of them are great. Some are not. Some great films havent even been discovered yet... like The Ice Storm. But there is good reason why I consider the 1990s to be one of the greatest decades in film history.
I grew up on this movie, and it makes sense that HBO funded it cause it played 24/7 on the channel which is why its a 90s childhood staple.
An absolute underrated classic
Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead is a great movie.
“THE DISHES ARE DONE MAN!”
If you had HBO at some point in the 90's, you probably saw this movie dozens of times. We had HBO for a couple of brief periods in the 90s, and this movie came on at least 3 times a week.
The video didn't mention this, but the mom absolutely did call the house a couple of times. She even asked to talk to the babysitter but the kids lied. So she wasn't straight up ignoring them.
Plus back then calling from Australia would have been super expensive!!
there's a remake??
Everyone in the comments is saying “the dishes are done man” and yeah I say that all the time too. But my go to is “I’m right on top of that Rose” in the office.
love !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!joblo originals !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It’s such a timebomb of that era - great movie!
Good choice to make the babysitter unlikable from the studio, that would’ve definitely hit different if she was nice..Also I was ten at most when I first saw this, so it really didn’t hit me how messed up it was when they dispose of her body😆 I was just along for the ride, so the whole movie was great for me and still remains great just like any other imperfect cult classic movie from that time period. Nostalgia really adds to the score of a lot of movies to me… anything with the late 80s early 90s vibe just makes me feel good, as long as it’s even halfway decent
I think the trailer for this movie was at the start of other vhs rentals at a waaaayyyyy higher rate than other trailers of the time seemed to be
I used to have to babysit my younger sibling over the summers and I remember being confused at first by this movie but loved it by the end
So lame that they tried to reboot this "for modern audiences" (that clearly don't seem to exist).
It is really lazy and shows how Hollywood has become creatively bankrupt
