Fletch Lives: An Underrated 80s Comedy Classic?

  • By now, everyone agrees that 1985's Fletch, starring Chevy Chase, is a classic comedy. Indeed, the mixture of thriller and comedy made the movie iconic in its own way, with it an adaptation of the classic series by Gregory Mcdonald. It was such a big hit that in 1989 it got a sequel, Fletch Lives. However, while the first film is considered a classic many maintain that the sequel is terrible, mostly because it didn't bother to adapt one of Mcdonald's novels, and just became another Chevy Chase comedy. But, as our host Kier Gomes maintains, the movie is a bit of a classic in its own way, with it consistently funny (maybe even more so than the original), with a great soundtrack by Harold Flatermeyer (returning from the original) and more. We'll tell you all about why we love Fletch Lives in this video!

I loved this movie growing up. Everybody that grew up in the 80s and 90s always had a unique handful of movies on VHS that they watched religiously... And this was one of mine. It introduced me to Chevy Chase, who I came to love for his zany, quippy humor in this above all else, and this largely influenced my sense of humor as a child. I especially loved Fletch's wacky "zippidee-doo-dah" Song of the South Plantation fantasy, and that Chevy Chase televangelist scene. 😂

And that synthesizer theme music was fire... Although I always get it confused with the Beverly Hills Cop theme.

I agree - I have very fond memories of Flech Lives, and from memory, I saw this first, then went back to watch the original. Both movies are brilliant, and I always go back to them when I want something to make me laugh on a chilled Sunday afternoon. Pure Chevy Chase brilliance!

I couldnt agree more.. but you forgot to mention Ed Harley of Harley Davidson motorcycles.. that scene was great. This movie had way more disguises and I loved it.. I dont get what the flack was that this got.. you hit the nail on the head.. it had all the best elements from the 1st one and just added onto it in this one. I do like this sequel a bit more than the original. A definite go to when I want a quick fix.

Chevy was funnier than any other comedian, past or present, in several movies. Vacation, xmas Vacation, Fletch, Fletch Lives, Funny Farm, Seems Like Old Times, Caddyshack. Have thought that since a child of the 80s. I love Fletch Lives since seeing it at the theater upon release. 10/10. He is so effortlessly hilarious.

I bought this movie in a video stores clearance bin for like $1 and I watched the absolute hell out of it. Growing up in Arkansas I knew someone who was like every single one of these ridiculous characters, so this too was a comfort film for me as a kid.

As a kid, I preferred Fletch Lives to the original as the humor is much more slapstick and sophomoric in the sequel. As an adult, and one who read several of the books, I grew to love the first film just as much, though they are very different films.
