I'm a retired psychologist. I came to an armchair conclusion about Ruby early on, which was confirmed for me by the swiftness and emptiness of Ruby's lengthy "the Devil made me do it" plea at her court appearance. I think Ruby is a sadist and derived much pleasure from the physical and emotional torture of her children. I could see her heightened arousal in her early videos describing punishment. The diary confirms it for me. So did her perfunctory attitude during jailhouse recordings. She just found "permission" with Jodi. I hope her seductive manipulation style doesn't get her a light sentence. She deserves the max, because I don't think an ounce of her has changed or feels remorse-- she just got caught, is all.

@SamanthaMarlman5292 I'm sure they did a complete investigation on him before they gave the kids to him but I was very concerned about the fact that he said he was addicted to porn. I was also concerned over the fact that the older daughter reported to the authorities that she couldn't get ahold of them and the police did nothing when they did the well check. If the older daughter knew they were being mistreated and she was in college and then Ruby's husband must have known what had been going on with the eight passenger thing. He's not innocent either.

I’m genuinely shocked by anyone who thinks RF wasn’t fully aware of what she was doing from start to finish in this case. She’s not zoned out in mental distress during her interviews- she’s still answering the questions that she knows she’s going to have to answer! If you Watch her early 8 passengers videos where she visibly enjoys punishing her children i think it’s pretty clear that Jodi unleashed the violent beast that is Ruby.
She was already using the language and “punishments” before getting in deep with Jodi.
I am beginning to agree with you. She told her son she was showing love by water boarding him. What is amazing is that he had the courage to go get help from the neighbor. His poor sister was unable to advocate for herself that much which is hard to watch. It shows the level of mind games and torture they have been through. If this is bigger than just two insane women, I hope that gets exposed.

I believe the Mormon Church was involved in the plea deal! This is the Church that referred families and children to this horrific therapist! They are also complicit!
She also said punishment always lasted at least six months and their behavior had to be acceptable in every area of their life, not just in what they were being punished for. I wonder how she got as perfect as she evidently thinks she is…..
Why is no one calling out the LDS CHURCH for recommending, promoting, supporting, and defending Jodi Hildebrant and her “ therapy services “???? She was bank rolled by the LDS church . Several complaints were made to the bishops about her . The LDS stood behind Hildebrant. Why is No one calling them out ????
Some are, like Mormon Stories Podcast, however, they're outside that system. I saw a clip from MSP of a man saying, if the LDS church were to denounce Joseph Smith, what would it even be? That says a lot to me.
If her house is any indicator of the support of her “services/therapy”, you know leadership is definitely part of the problem and they have deep pockets to protect their own. It seems like someone from the federal level needs to intervene bc the local legal system will do nothing to stop the LDS cult.

Also never forget how CPS and the cops were involved and looked the other ways for years. If they had done their job years ago it wouldn't have gotten this far. The only reason the cops did something this time is they couldn't look the over way due to national outrage and this time people who weren't involved with the church were there.
Your question is so important. The extreme LDS beliefs can imo promote psychopathic behavior (Lori Daybell, Tim Ballard etc.). There's no control system in place. RF will get away with her bs repentance-speech in court, the church is above the law in Utah and she just checked the required boxes. This is terrifying for the children.
When LE Asked Kevin point blank if he condoned the abuse that was carried out on his son and daughter in Jodi HILDEBRANT’s home , Kevin Franke response is “ I don’t know if I would condone that, I don’t know the full details as to why it was done “! WTF ? Horrible response .

So heartbreaking when they showed the boy going to the neighbor. The gentleman didn't get to the door very fast. The boy was walking away....I am so thankful for those neighbors. ❤They saved those kids and the boy is the hero. 😢

@@NonnieAnn They were an older couple. After the gentleman answered, the wife came out to the boy an you could just tell by the way their shoulders slumped that they were heartbroken when they seen him. He still had duct tape around his ankles. Oh it just breaks my heart thinking about it. 😢😢

In this case I do not think Ruby or Jodi took a plea to save the kids from a trial. They took plea deals so it would stop any further investigations. It's also best for law enforcement in this case or they'd have to answer why they didn't investigate a ton of previous reports on this.
Kevin's interview left me with the impression that Jodi's been involved with their lives since before they even had the 8 Passengers family channel

@@deerly_christina974 I'm glad Jodi is going to jail & those kids don't have to testify BUT in my opinion she kinda stalked this family & there's a trail of destroyed families that all follow the same pattern who will never see any kind of justice. As a victim of child abuse myself, it wasn't until I was an adult in my 30's before I found out that the abuse left me with permanent brain & spinal cord injuries on par with a 20 year veteran of the NFL that will eventually kill me. The statue of limitations for criminal charges or even a civil suit ran out before I was even in middle school. So it just irritates the crap out of me that Jodi's victims probably won't know the true extent of the damages she's caused for decades.
They took a plea because the church told them to. You think the church wants this coming out that Jodi and Ruby were actively having meetings with their highest most echelon? That Bishops and Temple Presidents were doing exorcists on a daily basis to Jodi? They had to squash this and fast before the rest of the world noticed that Ruby and Lori Daybell are produced by the same relgion with the same beliefs the same weird ideas of secret ceremonies and blood atonement and zombies and possessions and chosen people. This is Mormonism for real. Kids are NOT safe in this cult. This isn't a benign people, it's not your friendly neighborhood Presbyterian. It's a cult that puts itself in a sheep costume.
I think they took a plea deal hoping that meant that none of this evidence would be seen by the public.
In an 8 passengers video Kevin, minimising the fact Chad had no bed for months, said a professional had been advising the parents from before the channel started.
On 20/20, JH’s niece said she was abused by JH as a child and was taught to stare and blink. It’s frightening.

Ruby seemed extremely angry to me with the police. It felt like she was suppressing rage. She didn't seem out of it bc she understood the police's questions, asked for a lawyer and complied perfectly when being handcuff/ following directions

And then Ruby said nothing in her interview waiting for her lawyer but Jody just started spilling the beans, not about herself but about Ruby. What a manipulator.

Court TV reported that the kids were hidden in the safe room which is sound proof. They were taped over the mouth, wrists and ankles when guests were there. 😢

Unfortunately, Utah is a theocracy. The LDS Church controlls politics, law enforcement, schools, all of it. Many people have tried to take on that institution but they are too powerful. The only way that church will ever get the wind taken out of their sails is if society turns their backs on the church because they run on their members' money and adoration.

He tried to act like he was so shocked and horrified by what the investigators told him, but then later tries to get his daughter Shari arrested. Shari was a victim too, she just managed to get out sooner because she's the oldest. That spoke volumes about his character and priorities.

Btw- the mormon church promoted Jody for years as a reputable therapist despite hearing repeated accusations of abuse and conduct which actually cost her her license as a therapist for a time.
In Utah the mormon church has enough political influence to declare that as an organization they are NOT mandatory reporters. They ignored repeated claims of abuse from boy scouts for decades and were never held accountable
First, the church leadership and members and anyone who works with young people or other people all receive training and mandatory reporting is part of that training.
The church also doesn’t “promote” a person or private business, church humanitarian services will provide access to therapists who are willing to receive people asking for help.
I can’t say if the available therapists are vetted beyond their professional accreditation, but all of this church stuff is either straight wrong or wildly misunderstood.
These are a couple of manipulative people who were clearly using their available church to manipulate and justify.
Of any of the good professionals that were so good to the children, cops, paramedics, the neighbors, there’s an 80% chance they’re also members of the same church.

Im a christian so I know it sucks when people attain notarity for actions that totally misrepresent believers. If you are mormon tho you should seriously examine the historical validity of the things you are taught. Christianity can stand up to historical scrutiny. Mornonism cannot

With all the cases pertaining to abuse of children in the news & documentaries, I am so frustrated by the sentencing guidelines for crimes against children. What can be done to advocate for stronger punishment? Serious question.

It’s truly state to state with the laws. You can have someone like Shonda Vander Ark get life without parole for killing her son by starvation & hypothermia. Then another state sentence Ruby Franke to practically the same time when her kids are both alive & seem to be doing well.
Those poor kids are scarred for life. The taunting, the cruelness, the physical and psychychological starving is the worst thing you can do to anybody let alone small children. I hope they have loads of unconditional love for the rest of their lives.
Picture this---- your ex that kicked you out, cut you off from your kids, then got arrested horribly torturing and abusing your kids calls you from prison.....and you......actually answer, chat and be supportive???
Is that how YOU would react? In what world is that a reasonable situation? No anger. No accusation. No rage at this person not only turning your life upside down but literally using medieval style torture methods on you own kids.

Peter I can’t share your take on Ruby. Watching old videos of her I think she always enjoyed punishing the kids, humiliating and belittling them on camera. She had a sadistic side to her long before Jodi came into the picture. She only found the perfect partner in crime to justify her actions. I assume they pushed each other to more and more. There would have been an inevitable ending at that ranch for both if not all four kids.

The tiny shred of truth in the ridiculous "he did that to himself" excuse is that that little boy had to move his body in a way that caused him excruciating pain in order to escape and save himself and his sister. That makes him extra brave in my book.
The pain he must have felt with his injuries and with his dietary deficiencies, yet he saved his own life and his little sister. I’m confused by the middle two sisters who worked outside the home. Yet their mother emptied their bank svmccounts, why did they not do that for their siblings? How scared were they? I know the younger two need serious help for life, the eldest did reach out, Shari, but the middle two, what did they go through mentally for them to stay quiet? Not accusing just worried they don’t get the help they need and why they didn’t, what did they see?

In the notes released in the past few days ruby writes in her diary about hiding the kids when people come over and of course they were being abused in Jodies home, not in the Franke home

This feels like it could have become one of those cases where years later, somebody gets away and they find out about missing kids, supposedly «bad» kids who «ran away years ago» and then they find out they were killed. 💔
It's a weird room to be a safe room because it only opens from outside. Safe rooms are typically places to go if someone breaks into your house.

I think there’s probably a dial on the inside or a code box to get out from inside. If the kids were locked in there Im sure Jodi wouldn’t give them the code to get out.

@@physics4290I have a feeling most of those home in that area (they all look similar) either have one or had the option when being built. I see the appeal of having such a place if u live in such an expensive mansion and worry about being attacked. I personally don't believe in hunkering down in a bunker trying to survive nuclear apocalypse or zombie invasion, I'd rather be gone and in heaven. But I can see people wanting such things for a variety of reasons. It does seem like a small place for more than one person for an extended amount of time, so I'll bet that isn't it's purpose. And about building such a thing should be illegal, ppl use much more common rooms for evil purposes, the daughter was kept in a closet. It’s all sick but the one that really got me was the mixture of a ton of cayenne pepper and honey put on the tape to tape up the kids wounds. We knew this story was horrible. It’s way worse when you watch that body came footage.

I myself was a bit perplexed about how the State was able to impose such harsh penalties, but seeing their evidence makes it very clear that Ruby and Jodi deserve everything they got and probably more.

Harsh!? Neither of them will serve the max. They'll both likely get out of jail before they're old--which is more that either of them deserve. They toturted children! Those women both should get the max for each charge and never walk free. Neither of them have an ounce of remorse. Ruby got a sweetheart deal--the state promised not to interfere when she comes up for parole because she agreed to testify against Jodi (which she didn't even need to do, after all).

Just a few thoughts....... Jodi knew .... She knew the boy was missing. She knew the cops were coming because she was on the phone with her lawyer. .... What a brave little boy to run away AGAIN even with Jodi there. He must have felt his life was in danger. ..... Jodi moved the young girl upstairs. AND JODI LIED about not knowing the numbers to the lock to the safe room and not being in there. Because when they open it you see cleaning products sitting there on the counter !!!!! Not only did she know. She had been in there cleaning!!!!!!! Didn't it come out that the children were kept in there on chains that were pinned to the floor. That the reason for the marks on the boy's legs were from being chained to the floor IN THE SAFE ROOM?
What is heartbreaking is the empty kitchen and cabinets. Russel must have been tortured seeing that while living in a safe with an empty kitchen. It’s mental and physical torture these women committed. I hope Russel and Eve are getting healthy as they are so traumatized. Plus we have no idea what the older kids went through. The middle daughters were not schooled, and neither were the youngest, and the middle girls were sent to Jodi’s supporters to clean houses. They are going to need help too. All the kids were brainwashed and must recover.

Miraculously the middle daughters had each other. But Russell and Eve were in the same house but not seen each other in over a month. ... I hope someone points out to Russell how strong he was, how they could not break him. With everything done to him - he knew - what was being done to him was wrong and that the cavalry wasn't coming. He was going to have to save himself Then the cavalry came. ... Somehow all 3 girls did not trust the outside world ( including the police). YET Russell knew to reach out and ask for the police. ..... My hope and prayer is that wherever each of those children went when in state custody does not abuse them on top of what they have already lived. The immediate reaction is, ' Now they are safe.' But are they?

They all have deep ties to the Mormon Church which Jodi used to justify the torture and made Ruby think both she and Ruby were getting messages straight from the “spirit” about her devilish children. There’s a lot of people that need healing and unaffiliated therapy needed with anti cult specialists.

That is how most of them felt once Ruby and Jodi indoctrinated them into their strange beliefs. It will take therapy, resilience, and time and truly caring people to help them recover. I worry too.
I don’t believe for a second RF was brainwashed. I think JH just gave her the extra reinforcement she needed to continue to do what she had already been doing to those kids. But worse. She was already abusive. I think her demeanor at the police station may be more of a result of shock at the current situation, but when she does answer her answers are strong and confident. You can seen in videos long before JH came into the pictures RF was a force to be reckoned with.
There was a video on their family channel where Ruby gloating told about how she han manhandled R as an infant and then ignored the fact that he had broken bones for over a week. She also "joked" about how she deliberately dropped him on the head as an infant and was clearly getting pleasure from reliving how she abused a baby. She has abused that boy his entire life.

So Jodi's home has a "safe" room with a toilet and sink, but she doesn't know the code for it. How many other people think she's lying about that? This woman is afraid that someone might be coming for her.
The toilet had water in the bowl so someone has been in there flushing it at least once in a while otherwise the bowl would dry out & the tank might crack.
The toilet paper has been torn raggedly and is only a partial roll.

I find it interesting that Ruby calls her husband to talk and vent after she's arrested but she had no use for him before that she kicked him out of her house and life because her and Jodi were doing "important" work together, now she needs him?

@@Lucysmama-vq4sx he seems to be unable or unwilling to process in his first police interview but the second interview he's very willing to speak on Jodi. He isn't shocked in the first interview about the duct tape, he starts to say he doesn't know the context of the "discipline" which was maybe a tiny window to revealing he was aware of her "punishment" techniques before Jodi came around. Second interview after his phone conversations with Ruby he's willing to share how crazy Jodi was. Very interesting, they apparently didn't have enough to charge him but he does not have custody so that says something too

A parent's first, most basic duty to their children is to feed, shelter and protect. Ruby and Kevin (head-in-sand & neglect) both failed in that duty well before Jodi was in the picture. Both Ruby and Jodi are despicable and should serve the max penalty. I don't believe Ruby's Svengali story, nor the "my eyes are now opened" story.
Kevin agreed with Ruby in the jail phone call. He as dangerous as Ruby and Kevin. His reactions when told was that he wanted his wife. The reason he wanted the kids was get them before they told of what been going on. Just like his panic over the electricon he wanted back
Kevin was there for 8 years and he knew what was going on. He knew his son was sleeping on a bean bag chair for 9 months. He should be charged. My opinion

The biggest problem with this case is there is no separation of church and state in Utah. The Mormon church run the state.The Mormon church and bishop promoted Jodi, they knew about 8 passengers. I don't see them paying in prison like they should be with Mormons in politics there. The church needs to be held accountable but that will never happen. They're fine with their history of child abuse.
Separation of church and state just means that the state cannot make a universal religion like in the UK. That’s it.
The Mormon church is enmeshed with all facets of life in Utah. It is horrifying.

The scripture she is quoting is revolting in light of what is known, and this type of manipulative speech to put yourself in the right is what abusive people do. If anyone has had this happen to them, the controller or abuser will argue just like this because they still need to assert their authority.

I saw somewhere else that the "saferoom" had no way to open the door from the inside. So it was meant as a prison cell type room.... I wonder who had it built???? Did it come with the house, and if so, what was the prior owners use of it ...
All this stuff is making me thankful that my abuser wasn’t religious. It sounds horrible but I can imagine growing up being told that the creator thinks I’m evil and deserve this. Obviously still working through things at 40, my heart is wrecked for those kids. The life long therapy they will need. I have no more words.

I hope the parole board will review and consider this newly released evidence, and it should certainly extend their sentences. This is truly horrific. I was stunned previously when I heard the 911 call and saw the underground “safe room,” but seeing the videos of the boy running up to people’s homes to ask for help, and the daughter sitting in the closet, obviously terrified and emaciated, absolutely broke my heart. I hope & pray the children are in safe, loving environments, and have all the support they need to begin their journeys to healing.
I think the judge did get to see this stuff. I think L&C said it was only just now released to the public bc they aren’t seeking to appeal. And that makes me believe that the parole board will see it. But that is a great question, if new evidence were to be released after sentencing, would the parole board be able to review it? Like, would that require a new trial to prove all of it? Great question!

The news clip about her asking if they were on the news was taken out of context - in the recording of the full phone call, Kevin brought it up first by saying that an old associate of his texted him after many years of not talking saying something to the effect of, “Praying for you. This is terrible.” Kevin didn’t understand how this man knew anything … so then Ruby said, “Are we on the news?” … so she wasn’t looking for that publicity; she was genuinely asking if the arrest had been covered by news outlets.
I stayed up late catching up on everything and it was so horrifying and disturbing.💔I have a 12 YO son who is my best buddy and my whole world. I cried and woke him up at midnight to give him a hug and tell him i love him. Thanks for the coverage Peter

Without a doubt Ruby Franke enjoyed the sense of control and power she gained from her methods of punishing and disciplining her kids Before she teamed up with Jodi. She was strong in her defiance not to speak to LE and in requesting an attorney. I get your point Peter, that Ruby may have truly believed in what she was doing. But I see her at a minimum as being dangerously delusional, not a victim of Jodi. I still truly believe she has a sadistic nature just like Jodi. When the police found the little girl locked up she was so scared 🥲 u can see she doesn’t trust anyone to help her so heartbreaking I can’t imagine the pain they endured by the people who are suppose to love & protect them.

Thank you for your balanced coverage on this. I'm glad these two women were found out and held accountable. As to the not speaking to LE and waiting for a lawyer, even innocent people need to consider doing this. I say this as someone who has seen an innocent person be falsely accused and investigated. He spoke with LE initially because he knew he was innocent which turned out to be an unwise decision.
I cried last night watching some of the footage, sooo sad oh my gosh. They each deserve 60 years !
Jodi stated she hadn’t accessed the safe room for years, yet the ropes and shackles were found in a drawer, plus she could recall exactly what was in there on the bench. Also, the lawyer asked about if Ruby was there yet, so it’s plausible to think Ruby had been told not to say anything to the police, which would explain her silence except to state she’s waiting for her lawyer.
Thank goodness R escaped and got help for himself and his sister. He’s a hero. These women were embodying evil, not those poor children. I hope they both serve long sentences in prison.

I agree that Jodi was probably the leader and Ruby the true believer, BUT I don't think that reduces her culpability in this case because even before she met Jodi, Ruby really walked right against the line of being abusive by the legal standard.

The part in the journal where Ruby is withholding food because her child did not say, "Thank you." Then, she continues to push back on him that he's a demon for his lack of gratitude, which is essentially the point she's trying to make.
However, he was honest with her about the fact that saying thank you would be a lie for him because he wouldn't mean it. Probably because the resentment he feels for the mistreatment he's endured is so high, at this point, that gratitude is the last thing he has strength to focus on. Poor little guy!
It's difficult as a parent to watch her choose not to recognize the fact that honesty is just as important, if not more so in this situation, than gratitude should be. She's being a bigger child than he is, in my opinion. A parent is a thankless job most days, and that is just the fact of it.
A parent teaches gratitude in how she treats her children. You recognize the small things your children do to contribute to the household, thank them, and show them how appreciation and gratitude work based on actions. You can not demand it by withholding an actual daily need like food.
Your job as a parent is literally to feed your child and meet the daily needs of your children. My heart is heavy that she can not recognize her own childish actions in that moment, and the actual child is punished so harshly because she demands a "thank you." It's a horrific situation for those poor, innocent children.
Jodi's job as a therapist is to help Ruby recognize his honesty, in that moment, and learn to acknowledge a child for all the good behavior and choices being made. Jodi's therapy model is so harmful and wrong, in my opinion.
However, Ruby is still responsible for the mistreatment of her children. Both ladies are right where they deserve to be!
The most important thing is not to lose the children to their CPTSD. If that means we can throw the book at these monsters, then so be it. Healing the children is way more important than anything else and they deserve to be taken into consideration first.
I wanted to believe Ruby truly saw the error in her ways but if she did I would expect her to laser focus on her CHILDREN-without making admissions she could still make constant attempts to find out how they are doing, wondering if they'll ever be ok. Instead it's all about HER being saved.

I watched the whole video. And the boy knocking on a couple doors. That broke my heart for him. You explained for me why they weren’t doing a thorough search. A lot of walking around an empty ugly cold house. Poor babies.
I think of all the children still suffering. It’s beyond disturbing that they were so open about it and it took this long for them to be caught and that the child had to do it himself. What is wrong with us??

There are videos that are of concern before Jodi’s involvement where Ruby was already punishing the children questionably. I hope the parole board gets to speak to Ruby’s daughter who is over 18 and was trying to get the other kids out of that house.
Ruby and her lawyer put on a dog and pony show in court, she didn't mean a single word. The phone call with Kevin and Ruby , shows what a lier he is as he admitted that the filing for divorce is just to get the kids back, but he didn't disagree with anything she was saying, including saying how evil the children are. He is as much as a danger to the children as Ruby is. The calls to Kevin and her family shows that she needs 30 years without parole. Their older daughter spoke that Kevin is as guilty. Kevin and Ruby were emotionally and mentally abusive before Jodie. Ruby happily recorded the abuse in her videos as much as she took pleasure in recording the abuse in her diary. The children need to be kept away from Kevin and Ruby, because if one of them lay hands on the kids they most likely will punish the younger children because they made "mommy" go to jail.
100%. These kids are not safe! Kevin won't protect them, Ruby's family won't protect them, and apparently neither will the justice system (recommending 4 measly years for Ruby's actions is an abomination!).

From what I understand, Ruby's 14 year old & 16 year old girls were at Jodi's home at times. They must have so much trauma-a kind of survivors guilt. Will they be included in any award for treatment of emotional trauma?
This is not brainwashing or cult, she was already abusive. She just fed off Jody and used those justifications to be worse.

Ruby on a phone call from jail says if she gets released in 10 days or 20 years she will have a great testimony. She references reading about a man who was imprisoned in WW II. She sees herself as persecuted.
