What I really love is that Jodi was brought down by an emaciated child who on some level realised that what was happening was wrong and went looking for help.
Yes. That sweet brave intelligent boy brought that devil woman down. He was the one with the true power because he was not broken by them but continued in spite of them to survive for himself and his sisters.
Agree! Sadly though, I believe the 20/20 documentary said he was looking for someone to take him to the police station. Ruby told him she was going to get the demons out of him AND then he would go to jail. In the video with the neighbor, he asks to be taken to the police station, but I believe he'd been so brainwashed, he wanted to turn himself in. He was looking to skip ahead and go directly to jail. Tragic!

But I don't believe that he was trying to turn himself in, I really think he was trying to alert the authorities about what was happening to him and his sister. He did not have the appearance or I should say, demeanor of somebody who was trying to turn himself in. He looked like he was looking for help. I don't suppose we'll ever know what he was thinking unless he says so in later years. But I hope he was really just asking for help. I think what he did was incredibly brave.
@@kaitlynraw4899 He was incredibly brave no matter what his reason for going to get help. He is very strong and I'm so glad his mother wasn't able to break his spirit. I'm certain he saved his life, and that of his sister. If he hadn't been successful, I think this could have ended in the death of one (or both) of those kids. I hope he is able to heal, and go on to have a beautiful life!
He went to turn his self in. He said that he was to blame for the trouble he was in.
He says over & over he loves his wife. NOT ONCE DID HE EVER SAY HE LOVED HIS CHILDREN. Not ONCE. He has all these questions but not one question about how are my children doing. Not one word of remorse about what those kids have gone thru. He’s DISGUSTING.
He can't be trusted, it is so hoped that the courts and CPS see through this.
Yeah this was the most horrifying realisation in these interviews, it was all about him and Ruby, nothing about the children. It’s astounding.
They weren't asking him if he loved his kids, they were asking him about Jodi and the timeline of Jodi's involvement with this family
Doubt Ruby has any concern for Kevin- at all-. When she's not talking about herself w/ him, she sounds bored by anything he says. He started out a smart, very good-looking, totally devoted man. He was a university professor, made good money and adored his wife. Wow!! Most women would think they had won the husband lottery with that guy. Ruby wanted much more than that. She fed on the sick "ego food" of catching him out, putting him down and laughing at his tears. She is absolutely as terrible a wife as she is a mother- skirting the border of psycho for sure. L.

Even if we remove Jody, Kevin was a part of 8 passengers and a part of the severe discipline of withholding lunches, food, and beds from the children. Sorry - this is not a man I would allow to have legal or physical custody of his minor children.
That may be true, but was he doing that under the guidance of Jodi? Because I believe thats the case. And there's an argument that now that he's aware he was being brain washed and gaslit he realized how f-upped it is to not bring your daughter lunch when she forgets it. Or tell your son her can sleep anywhere BUT his bed for however many months. I can also see an argument for him being so naive and easily manipulated that he's too much of a risk to have custody of the kids. Anyway all to say I disagree he should be immediately discounted. I think many conversations need to be had to find out what he thinks is appropriate parenting. And of course what the kids want.

So Kevin was an active participant and condoned the abhorrent treatment of their children long before Jodi became involved. And then he had zero contact with his family for close to a year and a half… and that part Jodi clearly played a part because that is her M.O.
This guy couldn't protect his children from his ex-wife, what makes anybody think he's cut out to raise 6 children on his own? He wasn't even a good father when parenting was a JOINT EFFORT.

What really gets me, regarding chad paying for his own therapy, he says "he was paying her $900 a month to get brainwashed" ...she was only able to do that, because YOU, his parents, enabled her to do so! You let that woman into your childrens lives, nobody else, the children didn't ask for that, you did that. He had a year away from Jodi, and in that first interview, he was praising her, I struggle to get over that. I understand he wanted to get his wife back, but he really does go on about wanting Ruby, nothing about his kids. Thank you peter for covering these, it's a tough topic but I think it's important to shine a light on these cults
He is defending his wife sending her child to school with no lunch when she was SIX years old! Again….Ruby took delight in the pain/discomfort of her children.

I strongly believe based on Ruby’s phone call with her sister that she did not have a sudden epiphany that the torture she inflicted on her children were wrong! She flipped on Jodi when she thought Jodi was going to throw her under the bus and she’ll be the one holding bag! She flipped to save her own skin. Her remorse in court was fake!
He told the Police in his first interview he had never been to Jodi's home. Now, he describes being there. I do not believe a word he, Ruby, or Jodi say.

Me either Especially Ruby's tearful statement. She was playing to the camera! I think at first when I did partially believe her, I was in shock how she could turn off that evil so quickly and be remorseful. Now I don't feel she was repentant at all and Jodi sure wasn't!!

No matter how much I love my wife, there is absolutely NO WAY that I would agree to leave my kids with no contact. I will go to any court, even protest if I have to, to be in the life of my children. No sympathy for a weak father.

@@soude85 I can speak for myself. When I got divorced, I gave everything my ex wife wanted, but when it came to my children, I made it clear what will be accepted and what will not. Was he abused or was he weak? I am going with weak. And he has been weak even before Jordi showed up. The 8 passengers episodes show it.

I cannot give Kevin a break. He was with Ruby for years abusing and torturing those kids. He may have gotten brain washed a little, but he was all in for years. It is on video. All I hear Kevin, Ruby, and Jodi talking about is themselves. They aren't talking about the children at all. It's like they don't care.
He is ensnared by 2 narcissists, he is brainwashed and trusts them and the process. He is a victim, he doesn’t see what we see, he won’t see if for awhile. He was accused of being addicted to porn, Frankie accused her 3 yr old of that. Jodi accuses most of her past clients of porn addiction. Jody has the church and many many people conned and they believe her. She lost her therapist license yrs ago, she destroyed many other couples lives, her niece Jessie Hildebrandt was another victim, she got away, watch her podcast. It’s remarkable Jody got away with so much. There were police complaints from years back about Jessie, she tried to stop Jody, but it continued . Kevin is a victim too, even though it makes him look bad

You are correct 100%. He is divorcing her so the chances of him getting his kids back will increase. When she gets out he will be right there to pick her up. He will allow her access to those precious children. I am an Orthodox Catholic youngest of 5 children. There is no way in hell that my beloved Father Francis Paul would never not see, hug,talk to his children. Kevin Franke has proven that he does not have the stable mental capacity to care for these children. All 4 are broken and especially now they need a soft space to land and he clearly is not that person. These children need to remain in the states custody until they age out and God willing the two older C and S can help them. Ruby’s sisters clearly cannot help they are too busy doing you tube and building a new home. Ruby’s parents stayed out of the country until they finished their mission. The Griffith family has a lot to answer for and the kids were clearly abandoned. I think about little R and E wondering where all the aunts, grandparents were. Why don’t they come and save us? R saved his and his sisters life. I think about that daily. She told them they were demons. She should have her parental rights taken. The children decide whether they want a relationship with her. PROTECT the children at all costs. Kevin sounds like they all took drugs and started seeing weird stuff. I don’t believe what either parent says they can’t be trusted. Please Pray that’s all we can do.

And let's not forget that the other men to whom Jodi did this to, went to the courts to get parental rights back. They fought for their kids. Kevin did not.
He left a woman in charge of his family who he saw with his own eyes was disturbed. She claimed an evil was after her. Jodi was haunted by shadow figures. He described it as spooky Ruby claimed satan had been after her for years. They both told this guy and he left his kids with them. A grown father with resources left his children with them.

I stumbled on 8 Passengers twice way before we knew any of this. It turned my stomach. Ruby relished in her abuse and humiliation of those children. I saw this way back on their channel. Kevin sat there and watched and smiled throughout. He was a terrible father and just went along with all of it. I cut him no slack whatsoever. He’s evil along with his wife.

Listening to Kevan makes me soooo mad. He is talking about how miserable he was. What he went thru was a drop in the bucket to what the kids went thru. While he bowed to Ruby and left his kids to the dogs.
He seemed pretty annoyed he couldn't press charges against his own child as well. I will never believe he wasn't a participant in the abuse of his children. He doesn't seem to give a shit about them. Kevin promised Ruby in the jail call that the FAMILY will live in "TRUTH" after he get the kids back. He really promised to continue her "work" on the kids, just as the Connexions programm wants.
I understand that it can seem that way but two things can be true at the same time. Kevin can feel horrible for what happened to his kids and be upset and traumatized from his experiences from Jodi. He is explaining his actions and speaking to Jodi and her behavior.
But that’s their faith. Children are objects to them. It’s all about him. Just in this case Jody had one over him. She made him fall in lust/love with her.

I think the reason why so many people are saying that the LDS church needs a look into regarding this case, is due to their recommending Jodi by name to families *after* losing her license the 1st time. 😬
It was 1 bishop that's all. That like 1 person in 1 neighborhood of 1000 people. The church didn't recommend her. The catholic church the pope doesn't recommend someone there is a person whom is catholic that dies.
The LDS church did not recommend her. It was a bishop and bishops aren't therapist. I doubt the bishop knew all the stuff that was mentioned. He heard it prob by word of mouth. The bishop prob feels awful for recommending her.
I'm sure that Jodi, the master manipulator, had some church leaders convinced that she was a competent expert. Of course she did!
The first Kevin interview was eye opening he cried over his wife and asked about her, but never once asked about his children though he knew they were in hospital. That they were in DCFS custody. It totally tracks with wanting to charge his daughter. They made money off their family but he isn’t in contact at that time with either of his adult children until he needed them in court. The only victims here are their children.
He has communication with dcfs to ask about his kids. He doesn't need to ask the officers.
Remember when Kevin went to his house to find files laptops etc. that his daughter had taken. He wanted to press charges against his own daughter- was he implicated in any of that?

Yeah and didn’t ask how the kids were when he was told they were in hospital for being abused and his wife and Jodi were under arrest for the abuse. What he asked was “What happens to Ruby now? I love my wife”. Does not ask how his kids are. Does not say “take me to my kids!” or “how are my kids now?”. Nothing about the kids. In his first call to Ruby, they are blaming Shari and her sisters for the arrest. Both bashing Shari. Then he said about Chad “we HAD a son”. Well dude, I think you still have a son who is 19 now apparently so….”had”. Weird.
I’m told in Mormonism that the real relationship is between man and wife as it’s for all eternity. Kids take a back seat. No idea if that’s true or not. I’m not Mormon. I’m a secular person with a Jewish mother and Baptist father.

A lot of people agree with you, but I don't. It's a lot harder to manipulate detectives than you might think and I don't think he's trying. I think he's genuinely trying to help here. They asked about Jodi, and he's saying what he knows. I think he wants Jodi to serve as much time as Ruby for sure. Jodi is pure evil who has tortured other children in the past and gotten away with it, and he wants to make sure she doesn't get a lessor sentence

The whole time, he's speaking about how he felt, how isolated he was, yet doesn't say one word about his kids. He's still more worried about himself and his wife than his kids. He had months away from Jodi, I can't accept the excuses that it was all manipulation from Jodi. They mistreated those kids while they were together. He blocked his kids' numbers and walked away from them. None of them need to be near those kids ever again. He says things that make me feel like Ruby is the one in charge.

After the release of Ruby’s Journal, outlining in graphic detail, her horrific abuse and torture she inflicted upon her young children, I feel that the judge should have denied their plea deal. The sentence does not match the horrendous crime. I pray that the parole board reads every entry in that journal, authored by Ruby, and views the photos of her tortured and abused children. I pray that she serves the maximum, and never again has access to those children. I pray for physical and mental healing for ALL of her children. My heart breaks for all of them. Also, Kevin has some ownership in this. He absolutely knew that his children were being treated in a severe and abusive manner.

Going to trial would have been the same sentence, the trial would have just traumatized more the kids. Utah doesn’t have 1st degree charges for CA, is just second degree. A second degree, no matter how many charges they have, caps a maximum of 30. So even of the board they have to meet once in a while, wanted to leave them up to the max, that is 60yrs for both, they have to release them at 30. Is how the law is written in the state.
I had to endure physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual ab*se at the hands of my mother growing up, as well as one of her brothers m*lesting me when I was little. And I can share from personal experience that even with love and support, years of therapy, EMDR, survivors workshops, etc. it is still a lifetime healing journey and I still have C-PTSD from what I had to endure as a child. It is a godsend that these cases didn’t go to trial because that would have re-traumatized the children to have testify in court. I just hope that they are all placed in loving and supportive homes and are given the tools that they need to embark on their lifelong healing journeys. 💞

One of the hardest things, even as adult, is when people question the experience and we feel that need of defending it. That is as adult. Sometimes still remembering or telling stories from my childhood, I cry, also years of therapy. I can’t imagine these poor children going through a cross examination. Eventually they will talk and will actually need to tell their stories to process it, but will be in safer environments. Just imagine if a defense lawyer takes the strategy to make it look like they deserve it. No, they are better out of court and hopefully in a home where they feel lovable and loved.

Kevin and Ruby allowed her and her Satan attachment to move into their home with their young children. I was listening to the forensic psychologist on Hidden True Crimes explain how Jodi only gave them “permission” to do what they were already going to do on their own. I totally agree. I find Ruby's phone call about Jodi's lack of remorse interesting. Ruby talks about how the parole board will be looking for repentance. I think that Ruby already had a very disturbing belief system and even maybe sadistic tendencies but Jodi basically gave Ruby permission to go further than she would have on her own. I think Ruby got caught up in Jodi's cult, but Jessie Hildebrandt and Adam Paul Steed both said that Jodi was very good at using what was already there. Adam Paul Steed's original interview with Mormon Stories describes how Jodi coached his wife to become more manipulative and more narcissistic. Makes sense if you think about it. Therapists are supposed to help people achieve their best selves. Someone like Jodi helps people achieve their most monsterous selves.
So I think that yes, Ruby snapped out of it, but two things can both be true. She snapped out of the cult mentality but also was calculating and knew that she needed to show remorse. She never says she IS remorseful.

I absolutely agree and that Ruby just knows what to sell to get what she wants. Ruby severely punished her children so I think it is fair to say she/they should be severely punished. Her children will be scarred for life but these two monsters won’t so let them rot the 30 years. I don’t believe or trust Kevin…. He abused them whether he just followed Ruby or believed his kids should be punished that way. Will he abuse them again physically? Probably not but mentally I believe so and blame them for putting his “trusting” wife in jail. He will continue to scar them.

As a parent, when are children are harmed, even if it wasn't your fault you feel guilty for not protecting them. You would think he'd feel guilty and be blaming himself for not protecting them, but you never hear that. That's the most telling part.
Jodi’s own LDS bishop was participating in this craziness and trying to cast demons out of Jodi and saying there were evil spirits. Can members of the church wrap their heads around that? You can’t force someone to go to the hospital.
You might not be able to force someone go to the hospital but you can stop participating in their delusions and insanity and revoke certain religious privileges until they seek professional help. Also if that bishop would have reported the living situation and safety of the children forced to be around this scary stuff to child protective services, there might have been a difference made.
@@SunsetChaser308yeah, but the Utah legislature just barely passed legislation a few weeks ago that protects bishops who report child abuse from litigation. They are still perfectly free to allow it continue without ever reporting it to anyone.

I find it so interesting that Kevin's whole story is about what Jodi did to him. He seemed to sympathize with Ruby. The only time he mentioned their behavior toward the kids was when he mentioned the backlash for sending one of the children to camp, and that they had him paying $900 for therapy. But I am sure there were indicators of Jodi and Ruby's inclinations toward the younger children during that time. He didn't mention it at all. I don't hear any wondering about when they turned their anger and discipline tactics toward the children. Nothing.
How is it possible, for a father to come home every night, and not see that the children aren't being fed, are forced to sleep on the bathroom floor when they're sick, are bound with fu**ing tape?
Unless this man was in a coma during the extended neglect and abuse of their children, he is guilty.

My best friend and I, repeatedly called CPS, because there was blatant child abuse going on at the neighbors house.
CPS went so far as to tell us, they'd been looking for this woman for at least a year.
They never bothered to come.
She finally got busted two years later, living in a van, amongst a bunch of other lowlife scum, who were cooking meth, while the children were present.
Children should always be the priority, and when the father is living in the same house, where the abuse is happening, he's guilty.
The story of that mom that drowned all of her children, was a tragedy that should have been stopped.
She suffered from postpartum depression, for years. She told her husband and her doctor, that it was getting worse.
Her husband's solution? Have more children. Eventually, when her cries for help were pretty much ignored, her depression turned to postpartum psychosis, and she killed all of her children.
I thought her husband should have gone to prison, and her doctor should have lost the ability to practice medicine.
Instead, her husband claimed to be shocked by her sudden snap.
He walked away, a free man.
When anyone in a household is suffering abuse, people need to step in. When it involves children, it is a crime not to save them.
Teachers are obligated by law, to call authorities, when they suspect a child is being abused.
Why do fathers get a free pass?
Andrea Yates should be free and her husband should be in jail. So sad that she has to live with the horror of what she did. Those kids should have been in school. She should have been in therapy and on her meds with additional assistance until she was mentally healthy.
Take how he felt under Jodi and Ruby's gaslighting, like he couldn't do or say anything right, which he called "hell" and think of how a 10 and 12 year old would feel, and add physical torture.

This is a huge problem in the Mormon church. The Mormon church promotes that all members receive revelations and visions and if you don’t you don’t have the Holy Ghost with you.

I’m a bit embarrassed to say that for about 3 years my husband and I found ourselves steeped in a cult of personality around one central figure. One day that person’s teenage son slapped our 9 year old daughter across the face and in one instant we both woke up, packed up our daughter, drove away and never looked back.
It’s very hard to see where you are when you’ve been sucked in over time - especially when a hundred other people reinforce your reverence for that central figure.
Based on this experience of mine, and after listening carefully to Kevin’s 2nd interview, I believe he was brainwashed and the experience surrounding this event woke him up. I worry that he has potential vulnerability in the future, but I also realize I have fortified myself against the same.

I think Jodi is describing sleep paralysis when she is talking about shadow figures visiting her at night. Seeing shadow figures is one common hallucination in that state.
My daughter has sleep paralysis. She says she can understand why people would think there were ghosts or shadowy figures around the room. Thankfully she is reality based, not religious based, and can distinguish her brain hasn’t caught up to her being awake versus demons must be in the room with her.

Role reversal is a hallmark of Narcissistm. Part of the pattern is to look like the stable, reliable party, then become the party that’s vulnerable. To them, they started a transaction creating obligation, showed the victim how to perform the role through example, then manipulated the victim to fill it.
Both. He certainly is not equipped to raise healthy children at the time he is speaking of. He needs a good child development course to understand the trauma he willingly (which I doubt) or unwillingly exposed those children to. I think the older children could help in deciding if they feel dad would be capable of providing the emotional stability. These children are going to need so much rehabilitation, I just feel like if the father is willing to put the work into it- it’s worth it for these children. He understands better what torment they’ve been exposed to, but he’s going to need training in child development/ child care/ child trauma/trauma recovery etc.
I don’t think he cares enough. Even before Jody, on the eight passengers child, they do so many things that any psychologist would tell you was terrible for a child’s development.
Some of the manipulation sounds a little bit like Scientology, too. This is pretty scary.
What’s really scary is the fact that nothing is being done to bring Scientology down. Physical and emotional abuse of children and they’re still in business. Amazing.

I vote 'both' on Kevin--part victim, part defendant--but I'm splitting that into about 70% victim, 30% defendant. He definitely seems to have been brainwashed pretty heavily. I think a fair analogy would be a victim of trafficking, who is forced to commit felonies by his/her abductors. Are they legally culpable for those felonies? Well, according to many courts, yeah, they are. But they're still victims.
