There was no intent, which there has to be and that has to be proved.
They did not want the children to die, but if any of them had they'd only be charged with (accidental) manslaughter.

It's so gross. All these people who say Jodi is more culpable are blind because Ruby is pretty and knows how to cry for the cameras (now that she knows that's what the public wants from her) and play victim. They read the entire 60 pages of what Ruby wrote about tormenting those children and they think she's an innocent brain-washed bystander? Nah, bro. The LDS church is saying this through the prosecutor, this is not something anyone on the case factually believes and you'll never convince me otherwise. Unless the redacted pages talk about how Jodi is actually holding them all hostage with weapons and legit threats, Ruby is the more culpable one.

I'm Jewish and a Jewish historian. While I agree that comparing things to the Holocaust is not usually appropriate, there were several very real ways that these children were tortured that mimicked concentration camps. Dehumanization through ostracism, shaving hair, exposure to the elements, denying food and water, verbal hatred and denigration, forced labor, and expectation of total obedience is a pretty damning matrix of abusive behaviors and goes beyond many "average" abuse cases. I think the head shaving, forced labor, isolation, 'scientific' recording of sadistic experimentation, and emaciation do quite naturally evoke Nazi tactics even if its not a comparison I'd generally recommend using. I'm most disgusted that Ruby compared HERSELF to Victor Frankl in one of her phone calls.

    • @poetryqn
      @poetryqn Місяць тому +7

💯 Thank you. I've been saying this since details of the torture emerged. I think civilized people need to step in and stop ANY ideology, religious or secular, that perpetuates this damning confluence of belief, and dehumanizing torture to force obedience.

Ruby is just as responsible as Jody, if not MORE. She is their mother and was already abusing these children long before Jody came along. Jody just led her farther down the path. They are both pure evil and deserve the same amount of time in jail. It makes my blood boil that people are buying the crap that Ruby is spewing about being sorry for her actions. She is NOT and is only playing the game to ensure an early release from prison. She is NO VICTIM of Jody. Thank God the child was able to escape and get help to bring their torture to and end. Jodi was abusing kids before this and she found a perfect partner in Ruby, someone who cared for her kids only so far as they were useful to her and as nothing more than that. Ruby got something from Jodi, whether it was money and comfort or a sense of importance and holiness, and the fact it nearly killed her children was a price she was more than happy to pay. Even before Jodi came on the scene Ruby was abusing her kids for profit for her family blog. She never saw them as anything more than props in her life. Who cares if the props suffer if it allows the main character to feel important and special. Manipulation. Acting. Trying to continue the abuse because this will allow her to possibly get back to them sooner especially if her husband divorces her so he can get custody back. When she gets out it won't be part of the probation because they think they're divorced. I think that will also be part of the manipulation to get back to the 'work'.

Ruby incriminates herself, as she believed what would happen to herself and Jodie if they didn’t find R the first time he escaped they would be going to jail. She was not delusional when she was writing this down. She knew full well of the consequences that would happen if they were caught.
Ruby caught on early of what the probation board wants to hear from her as she stated when she was talking to Julie that she would get an easier time because she was remorseful, but Jodie wasn’t 😮
I sincerely hope the parole board reads her journal, and her words are ringing in their ears as she is telling them how remorseful she is now, she’s not under Jodie’s spell.

I felt a literal sinking of my heart, learning that someone as thoughtful as Peter and someone as experienced as the prosecutor are buying into ruby’s manipulation. She is dangerous and she will hurt someone else if she gets out. She reminds me of my abusive ex in her ability to confuse and charm intelligent people.
I pray that she is kept in prison as long as possible. I pray that the kids are free of her forever because it’s clear she’ll twist other people if she can do this to people like Peter. You can’t just “hope it’s real ”, Peter, because she’ll damage whoever she can get control of when she gets out. I love your faith in people but this type of person is not ever going to be safe. They were going to kill those kids, and Ruby? Ruby was already abusing them before Jodi. so so so many people tried to get cps to intervene before Jodi came into the picture. It’s…god. It’s so terrifying you believe her.
Remember the judge in the Shanda Vanderark case? He said in the end that he almost wanted to believe the defense, that she hadn’t known better. Then he realized he wanted to believe that because the other option was to realize she wanted to hurt Timothy like that, that that kind of evil had preyed on a little boy and killed him. I imagine that this may be part of why some people who are otherwise wise and capable are falling for pretty Ruby franke’s crocodile tears and social savvy. Because the alternative is to realize that someone who had every opportunity to be a good mom chose to abuse in mind numbing ways. You only have the opportunity to believe Ruby is sorry because Russell managed to escape before she went from torturer to murderer. Please. Think of how this all would look if those children had died? We don’t need to wait for dead children to act sufficiently. Every time we do, more children are at risk.

She still has control over Kevin based on the jailhouse calls, and if she has Kevin and he's fighting to get the kids back, she'll have a hand on those kids by extension even through this prison sentence.
It isn't over, she hasn't learned, she thinks she was totally justified in her actions and the light hand everyone is taking with her will just be divine intervention through her martyrdom. I cannot believe people are falling for it this way

Bishops acting like they have education enough to be therapists and they don't have any (they count the spirit leading them as good enough). It's deadly especially when a person really thinks they're being counseled by God because they've been taught the bishop is God mouthpiece 🤦‍♀️ Leadership pushing LDS family services even with all the horrible stuff known that goes on in those places.
Oh and LDS family services recommending those notorious camps and brat camp... I was almost a un-aliving statistic of LDS family services myself.
There are little to no records of lots of the stuff they do because they learned from the Catholic Church getting caught and what got them caught and how much written proof there was and take little to no records so that they don't get caught with all of this like the Catholic Church did.

I've survived so much abuse and felt like I was doing something for so much abuse to have happened to me. I think we've just made this world a safe space for abusers. Cases like this make me realize that abusers just have to manipulate the right way to keep getting away with it and to be able to keep doing it. Reactions like this video and the prosecutor finally helps me understand why we will never be safe and we will never get to a place where we are safe until a majority of professionals figure out how to recognize when they're being manipulated.
As well as the terms aren't enough and plea deals need to stop being so common in these cases... And if it means that we need to change how we treat survivors in court so that it's safe for children/adult survivors to go through the ordeal of court then we should be doing that because THIS isn't working.
THIS is what puts children and other adults that don't know a person is an abuser in further danger even after they're a known abuser by the courts.
We need harsher sentences And we need these professionals to stop giving out forgiveness where it's not theirs to give out.

He’s a lot of things (bad dad, beta male, etc), but he was disturbed with seeing basically poltergeist activity in his house after he invited Jodi to move in. And Jodi was doing spiritual rituals around this time- like messing with dark energy. I have had some weird experiences myself so I am very open to the paranormal. Ppl wouldn’t believe me if I shared what I’ve seen. I’m not saying that Jodi was possessed but I do think she has SO much negative energy that it could cause that. Or maybe she’s possessed 🤷🏻‍♀️ all I know is that Kevin said this happened and put his entire reputation as an engineer, doctor, and professor on the line when he admitted to witnessing this.

Probably Jodi used those things, whether purposefully created by her or not, as "evidence" of her divine knowledge to gain more control over the Frankes. I don't think Ruby is helpless, either. I think she's one of those rare people with severe delusions who is also aware enough to manipulate. The notion that Ruby thought she was powerful enough to keep demons away from Jodi is a highly intoxicating level of power and a grandiose inclination to begin with. It would also create a very strong bond between her and Jodi. Jodi had wounds on herself which at one point seemed self-inflicted; however, if she allowed Ruby to harm her as a form of religious purification, knowing she believed harsh punishment was god-ordained she could easily have easily manipulated escalating abusive cycles towards the kids.

My reaction to prison time is based on the things Ruby said to her husband over the phone after arrest, her journal entries, and the fact that she was remorseful in front of the judge while simultaneously telling her husband she was fighting evil in their children. Ruby shouldn’t get out of prison until her two youngest victims are adults. Jodi should do more time because of her ‘therapy’ and how she broke families apart deliberately and the poor husband and wife were left feeling it was sanctioned by their church since she was recommended. Unbelievable power and control. I like the idea of redemption too, Peter. But 4 years is not long enough to rid Ruby of her talk of evil, thinking her children did not deserve privacy or food. That’s baked in belief. That’s bred in the bone philosophy of children as chattel. That’s barbaric.

So… Ruby found a brand new way to show remorse-by thanking all the government actors. Listening to her jailhouse calls, I hear strategy, not remorse. And to hear you and the Prosecutor evaluating her statement and thinking it shows real remorse… I find that terrifying because that means her strategy is working. She may have passed Jodi as far as skilled manipulation, as she’s already laid the groundwork with her statement because people have bought into her “remorse.” You can see how sadistic Ruby is in the 8 Passengers way back before she met Jodi (Kevin too, btw). It’s unimaginable, the damage Ruby has done to her children by constantly telling them they are evil, and that she’s abusing and torturing them because she loves them so much. Listen to the way she talks about Sheri, her oldest daughter, and the one who’s been reporting the abuse and asking the authorities for help. It’s possible that Jodi is a bigger threat to the community, but what Ruby has done to her children deserves more than 4 years of prison time.

6:02 it’s interesting that the Prosecutor says this in this way. In this case, not only did the neighbors call police with concerns, Ruby’s own older daughter fruitlessly reported her mother.
If they aren’t arresting people in these communities, this says to me that’s due to their choice to not take the reports seriously.
I’m also a bit confused at his saying that he bought what Ruby was selling in her court appearance despite having seen her notes/ diaries and having heard her phone calls. I’m sorry to say, but that is really dense on his part.
It also should probably be noted that this is the same state where that Provo Canyon School resides. This level of religious abuse seems to be rampant in these communities as of late. As a Catholic raised person I can say that it’s not at all the religion but Mormons can be just as hardcore as Catholics in their zealotry. This is the problem in this country. We don't value children. These children's childhoods were stolen from them. This is a trauma they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. I think these women should be locked away and I think they should throw away the key.I don't think they deserve to be free again personally.

Narcissists don’t value ANYONE. It just happens that if you’re one of their children you’re gunna find other out more so than anyone else. And we have a LOT of narcissists in America. We celebrate them. They are the Trumps, Kardashians, the majority of Hollywood, politicians (on both sides)… and we treat them like gods. We allow ourselves to be manipulated by their sweet talk and feed into their B S. Our culture is the core of this issue.

Yup. They're scary. At the very least they shouldn't be able to have any control over vulnerable people again.
