The transformation into donkeys wasn't because of anything in the drinks or cigars. It was the magic of Pleasure Island, where a poorly-behaved child who made a jackass of himself would literally become one, the flipside of the Blue Fairy's promise that if he proved himself worthy he could ascend to humanity. "Pinocchio" was absolutely a "morality play" from Disney.
"I've given you life."
Nick, you radiate the wholesomeness of an entire litter of puppies.
Coachman: "They'll never come back as boys!"
It wasn’t so much what they drank but their overall actions. Acting like “jackasses” aka donkeys by doing bad things turned them into donkeys

I swear, that scene where the kids turned into donkeys and the freaking monster whale was a fever dream of mine
"I don't know anything about Pinocchio."
“This is so dark”
Actually, the phrase "Jiminy Crickets" was around before the character was named. It's basically the family friendly version of "Jesus Christ"
this film was partially nightmare fuel for me as a kid thanks to that scene where the kids turn into donkeys and that freaking whale
That pleasure island scene is disturbing more even more as an adult. 😨

A few things to note are:
I read the original book when I was little and it's soooo much darker.
Fun fact: the melody of the song 'When You Wish Upon A Star' is often used on those classic Disney logo screens at the start of many of their movies.
this movie is really good in terms of its animation, like remeber this was made in 1940 this must've blown peoples minds
Re-watching this movie just adds to my theory that Donkey from Shrek is in fact one of these transformed children that escaped 🙃
pinocchio is a hardcore... nick has no idea what a ride he's in for
