    Fun fact:
    At a recording session, Lucille La Verne, the voice of the Wicked Queen, was told by Walt Disney's animators that they needed an older, raspier version of the Queen's voice for the Old Witch. La Verne stepped out of the recording booth, returned a few minutes later, and gave a perfect "Old Hag's voice" that stunned the animators. When asked how she did it, she replied, "Oh, I just took my teeth out."

    The whole "singing to the animals" in early disney movies had a very practical background. Back then, Disney animators hadn't really figured out how to animate humans all that well (which is why in most scenes Snow White is sitting down or leaning out of a window, while all the movement comes from the animales surrounding her) while they had a pretty good idea to animate at least small animals (they were still struggling with deers and horses). Basically the animals provide the movement to hide how static the human characters still are. The Dwarves were a handy choice for similiar reasons, because they were allowed to be more cartooney.

      @@lampad4549 That Disney had trouble animating human characters? Just look at any feature ever made about the creation of Snow White...or Cinderella or Sleeping beauty. The problems continued a problem regarding the Prince until Sleeping Beauty, which is why the Scene in which Charming was originally supposed to meet Cinderella was cut and Phillip got the "Escapte the Dungeon" scene which was originally an idea for Snow White's prince.
      That they only learned animating deers properly for Bambi? Just watch any feature for Bambi, were you can see that they actually brought deers to the studio, so that the animators could study their movements properly.
      That Snow White is pretty static in most scenes? Just pay attention to the damn movie, and you will notice how often the movement in the scenes comes either from the animals or the Dwarfes instead of her.

    So I learned this little factoid recently. There were female animation interns on set, like when they were photographing the animation cels. They were in charge of the cels and switching them out, seeing how it looked in between the shot. The animators lamented how they couldn't paint blush on Snow White and make it look like real blush. So when they noticed the shots and saw she does indeed have blush. Walt Disney himself asked how the animators did it, they said they didn't do it. He asked the women in charge of the cels, and they answered with make up, literal make up, that they just applied onto the painted cels. They applied Snow White's makeup over 500 times if I remember correctly.

      And what was worse, was they STILL wouldn't allow women to be lead animators for decades. It was official policy - women were good enough to do the grunt work with cell coloring and shading, but wouldn't even be considered for key animation or creative positions.

    • @swanpride
      @swanpride Рік тому +18

      @@hopeofdawn Not quite true...that was official policy in pretty much all animation studios, but if Walt Disney saw a talent, you could bet that he would use said talent, no matter what. Case to point: Mary Blair. Thing was more that there was little opportunity for women to catch his attention in the first place. But Disney had women in leading positions way earlier than most studios. (Meaning they were backwards from our perspective, but back then, they were actually a better option for women than pretty much any other studio).

    A few quick facts for not only the first ever Disney movie but the first ever animated movie!
    1) Months before the movie was set to release, critics across the country dubbed it “Disney’s Folly” as due to a fully animated movie never being attempted, everyone thought it would bomb and bankrupt Disney.
    2) The audience's initial reactions at the premiere of the movie shocked the entire production crew. Many viewers were heavily crying at Snow White’s death, cheering when she was woken, and the entire audience gave a standing ovation at its end.
    3) Although it wasn’t in the running for an Oscar, Walt still received an achievement award at the Academy Awards (presented to him by Shirley Temple). The award featured the golden oscar man surrounded by seven other smaller versions of him to represent the dwarfs.

    • @swanpride
      @swanpride Рік тому +69

      Here another fact: It wasn't the first animated movie by ANY means. It was just the first released in the US and the first one which used this kind of animation. The oldest animated movies are actually from Argentina which used some form of stop motion, but have been lost. The oldest surviving Animated movie is the German movie The Adventures of Prince Achmed, which preceeds Snow White by a decade and used Silhouette Animation. And if you know the movie, you know that Disney was clearly inspired by it, considering that he lifted a lot of its technique...his so called Multi-Plane camera is basically a fancy name for a construct which just made it easier to use the same technique Lotte Reiniger already used, and the transformation scenes from her movie were clearly an inspiration too.
      Don't get me wrong, it was an achievement, but to think that it was the first is the result of Disney effective marketing regarding the movie.

      @@swanpride Thank you. Although it actually wasn't even the first one in the US. Pinto Colvig's Animated Films Corporation made a feature length animated movie called Creation way back in 1916. Pinto Colvig, who voiced Sleepy and Grumpy in this was also the original voice of Goofy and Pluto. Kind of rude of Disney to take credit for that when they have the guy who actually made the first feature length animated movie voicing characters for them in this

    • @LA_HA
      @LA_HA Рік тому +2

      It's not considered a full-length movie, but my favorite cartoonist, Winsor McCay, became an animator around 1911; putting out a 10 minute short called "Winsor McCay: The Famous Cartoonist of the NY Herald and His Moving Comics."
      I learned about him by accident while looking for a topic for a comic book history course. The guy was a genius, who trained as a draftsman, and he got into comic strips, animation, and mixing live action with animation very early. He created his own films of varying lengths from 1911 to 1921, all out of his own pocket.
      I forgot why he never made the effort to compete with Disney. Possibly, money might've been the problem. But I remember thinking he was a Lot like Tesla -- he was arguably much more talented than those who became household names, so we'll never know if his full capabilities.
      Here are some of his works, which can probably be found on UA-cam
      __ 1906, McCay released Dream of a Rarebit Fiend, after that he released the 1911 test animation of his famous character, Little Nemo
      __ 1912, How a Mosquito Operates
      __ 1914, Gertie the Dinosaur
      __ 1918, a rendering of the historic tragedy, Sinking of the Lusitania
      Decades later, in 1989, a Japanese anime was created of "Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland," which was also based off of his famous comic strip of the same name.
      Look him up sometime if you guys have a chance. He did some pretty amazing things back then that are still practiced today

    Seeing as you asked where the dwarfs comes form - Snow White is based on two historical characters (a 16th century countess and an 18th century duchess). One of those characters lived in (or close to) a late medieval German village with a long standing mining industry. The men started work in the mines at six years old and, by the time they'd grown to adulthood they all had restricted growth due to working down in the mines every day in cramped underground conditions. By the time the story was written down by the brother's Grimm the memory of the dwarven miners was probably quite strong in the town even if the mine was no longer in use.

      There were a lot of mines in Germany and in Austria as well in the Middle Ages and later on. I doubt that has anything to do with the fairtale. Every fairtale is full of symbolisim, starting with symbolism of colors and flowers, woods for example always mean something subconscious. They shouldn't be taken literal. The dwarfs are not short people they are earth spirits and spirits represending the underworld/ death. So while Snow White stays with them, she is already kind of dead and only the prince can awaken her again. I don't think it is even mentioned the dwarfs are miners. Besides most of the story is about a mother getting scared of getting old and beeing jealouse of her daughter also showing competition between women of different generations especially between mothers and daughters (I know it says stepmother but stepmother is just the dark side of the mother). There is also a warning of strangers.

    In one telling of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, the evil queen cannot find a way to transform herself back to her original self and instead hides within the woods for the rest of her days.
    Another ending which is much more darker, the evil Queen returns back to her kingdom and after asking the mirror who the fairest of them all is, he answers the new queen is much beautiful than her.
    So she goes to see the new Queen and sees it’s Snow White, she’s so shocked that she’s frozen in fear on how she could still be alive and when Snow White sees her, she sentences the Evil Queen to dance in iron shoes that are red hot from burning over the fire.
    The Evil Queen dances in the hot iron shoes until she dies and Snow White and the king live happily ever after.

The first was with a spool of lace when she tied her corset too tight (causing SW to be unable to breathe. The second was with a poisoned comb as she tried to use it scratch SW's skin, but it didn't work. The last was with the apple which wasn't poisoned, but rather got stuck on SW's throat. Yep. In the Grimm version of Cinderella the stepsisters cut off their toes and heels to try to make the shoe fit then the birds peck out their eyes. Interestingly the glass slipper may, at one point, have been a fur boot that was simply mis-translated.
      In the Grimm version of Asheypaddle it's a masked ball. When the sisters try to wear the mask to go to the ball on subsequent nights the mask does not fit, digging into their eyesockets on one side or another. The stepmother has a surgeon remove an eye from each daughter so that she can wear the mask but when the prince dances with them he sees blood dripping from beneath the mask. He observes that the mask is digging into the eye socket and, upon removing it, finds that there is no eye (for it was very recently removed). At this point he knows that each of them is an imposter. Interestingly in the Asheypaddle version there is no fairy godmother. Asheypaddle uses witchcraft herself to ensure that she can go to the ball.

    I watched an indepth look at the original snow white (created by a youtuber, sorry i dont remember who). They explained why snow white was sooooo popular (as a personality not just a movie). Shortened its that this was created around a ww and everyone was expected to act as snow white did in the movie, which made her not only relatable but also a roll model for those who thought it too hard and children. Everyone wanted a hardworking, happy, non complaining woman, no matter how hard the times got, and the promise that the prince (some say its the men from war, others say its the sweet embrace of the grim reaper) was on his way to make things better as her reward.
    It was a cool video and i definitely look at it differently because of it. From that point of view snow white does get some flak now, mainly because of the music choices of that time.

No one believed it could work and indeed new technology such as the multi-plane camera, were first employed on the making of Snow White to make the film a success. And I believe that is what most Disney films lack nowadays: PASSION. He almost ruined himself for his dream; now they only do sequels, prequels, remakes... play it safe, just make money, you know. Snow White feels very gothic in the most classic sense. The castle she lives in, the transformation scene of the stepmother into the hag, just the general vibe in the more serious, non comedic scenes. I really appreciate it as I get older. Snow White & Goldilocks-
    There is actually a segment from both written fairytales that is almost identical to each other; that is the sequence of eating, resting, & discerning the sizes of each object. It could be that either one fairytale spawned from another or the original fairytale developed into something completely different. I mean, oral tradition is how these fairytales were carried down until the 17-18th century, I believe.

    If you don't want the sweetness of the ending ruined don't read this.
    At the end the prince comes and kisses her, wakes her up into her happily ever after and takes her to his kingdom in the clouds. There was no indication that the his kingdom was high in the mountains, or just harshly backlit by a sunset so you can't see the land, it was a kingdom floating in the clouds, which is the same (very popular at the time of making this movie) description that many people, especially parents, would use for heaven as an easy to understand concept for kids. Snow White didn't wake up at the end of the movie, she was taken to her heaven, her happily ever after.

    I always prefer that they make Snow White very sweet but not too manipulated (she only falls for the Queen's trick once in this version.) In this version, she helps the old lady and takes her offer of an Apple. Whereas, in the original, she is tricked 3 times.
    Once by a corset that is so tight that she can't breathe and passes out (presumed dead) until then Dwarfs later find her and cut it and she can breathe again. Then she is tricked into accepting a poisoned comb and is knocked out (again presumed dead) until the Dwarfs remove it from her head.
    Each time the attacks happen, the Dwarfs tell her to beware of strangers and Snow White ignores them because she is so friendly and trusting. Even in the end, she isn't awoken by a kiss. The Prince asks the Dwarfs to let him have her body (no one questions this :P) and as the Prince's men are carrying her coffin back to the Prince's kingdom, one of the men slips. This results in Snow White's body being jolted and this dislodges the apple and she is able to breathe again.
    Disney was all about the power of true love's kiss against magic in this film and in Sleeping Beauty and then it morphed into "true love" changing into "family love" like in Brave and Frozen, etc.

Terrifying and the music was world class. Children weren’t separated from scary stories because these were warnings about life.

    Not only was animation the attraction for kids, but this was in full color while most movies were in B&W. Also there were not that many full length movies for kids at that time. Shorts like "Our Gang" etc , but not full length. It was like a Fairy Tale book coming to life.

    • @oliverbrownlow5615
      @oliverbrownlow5615 8 місяців тому

      The "Our Gang" shorts feature child actors, but I would dispute that their intended audience was kids. I think they were intended at least for general audiences, as they included many jokes that were aimed at adults, with the silliness and cuteness of kids usually being the main focus.

    Fun fact: According to the Disney "making of" special for this movie, originally Dopey wasn't supposed to be out-of-sync with the other dwarves like that. It's just that, in one of the last scenes to be animated, Dopey was out of sync when he joined in the conga line, so the animator had to put in a little half-step to get him lined up with the other dwarves. None other than Walt Disney himself said he liked it, and made the other animators go back and put it in all the other (already finished) scenes.

  • @GeekGirl-ub7ki
    @GeekGirl-ub7ki Рік тому +4

    To answer your question on rotoscoping. They used it minimally since Disney wanted to challenge the art form and the popular style of the day was what we refer to as "Rubber Hose" style. (Max Fleisure did use some rotoscoping for some Betty Boop dance sequences but in the industry, it wasn't standard). Walt Disney gave projects to his animators to increase their skills in preparation for Snow White to make it the best possible movie they could. In 1932 they produced the first full-color animated short called "Flowers and Trees" specifically to learn how to translate color well. Then in 1934 they did a cartoon called "the Goddess of Spring" to learn to animate a realistic human woman (watch and you can see how much they improved by the time of Snow White). Then they invented a camera that could create depth effects called the multiplane camera and did a short called "The Old Mill" just to test it and improve skills in animating a more realistic environment in 1937. Disney won academy awards for all of these shorts and one for technology for the multiplane camera. They took what they learned from all of this plus they created reference films and photographs for the animators. It is unknown what parts were actually rotoscoped but it was genuinely minimal.

The production of the movie was so expensive overall that the company operated in the red for YEARS afterward, with brother Roy basically going back to Bank of America multiple times for loans. The fact that the bank kept giving them loans shows how much they recognized how special the movie was and the potential of the studio do more.

The apple that was stuck in Snow's throat dislodges and she vomits it up. Eventually, the prince and Snow get married. The evil queen comes to their wedding and the prince makes the queen dance to death in iron slippers for attempting to kill his now wife.

    I love Snow White, and I’ve always been fascinated by the history of it. You guys need to check out some of the early Disney shorts, such as flowers and trees, the skeleton dance, steamboat Willy, the old mill, and the Goddess of spring,. Especially the old mill and The Goddess of Spring. The old mill is where they developed and practiced cinematic movement, style and water effects, and The Goddess of Spring is where they practiced realistic living movement and facial structure. Both were a study to practice specifically for Snow White. That’ll give you an idea of how Disney developed the skills they needed to make the film. You can really see the influence of these shorts on the final masterpiece that is Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Incidentally Flowers and trees is the first color cartoon.

    Bambi was among the first Disney movies to be made, along with this one, and it is amazing seeing how much they had advanced in their animation of animals between Snow White (1937) and Bambi (1942). Like, compare the design of the deer in this one, to the ones in Bambi, and it is amazing how much more attention was later paid to anatomy and movement of animals.

    • @EChacon

      Interestingly enough, _Bambi_ was meant to be Walt Disney’s 2nd animated feature after _Snow White_ and entered production in April of 1937 just months before _Snow White_ was released. However, Walt put the film on hold due to the original novel’s adult themes being grim and somber and also that animators would find it difficult to animate the Deer and the animals realistically when compared to the animals seen in _Snow White._

    It's not the first feature length animated movie by a long shot. Ironically, Pinto Colvig, who in this voices Sleepy, Grumpy, and Dopey's hiccups actually made the first full length animated movie way back in 1916. It was called Creation, only five frames of it survive. Colvig's studio didn't survive WW1 and later he joined Disney and was also the original voice of Goofy and Pluto
