Gary Jules was a student of mine at UCLA. He gave me a burned CD of this song, with Mad World written on the outside of it. He gave me his album along with it. It was the month my second child was born, so I was rushing out of the classroom to take my wife to the hospital, and never listened to the song. When I finally did, I was so happy for Gary. Such a beautiful song from a great person.
@@67tedward Indeed. In many cases having a song covered is a sign of respect to the writer and original performer. In other cases it's a weak but well marketed karaoke performance (like most of Pop Idol/X Factor/Voice)
Of course tears for fears was terrific back in the day, but this song really hit its stride when it was covered by Gary Jules for the movie Donnie Darko. If you look back at the original music video for Mad world with Tears for Fears it is good, but it's very fast-paced and something like Gary Jules' cover works a lot better with the tone and lyrics of the song.
"I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad, the dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had" some of the most powerful lyrics ever written. The stripped down version makes them even more so. AMAZING!
Every lyric and the melodies they’re sang in makes this a masterpiece for the ages..it’s a breathtaking experience to hear songs that are so masterfully composed
I’ve always found the lyrics about school the most affecting . We moved around a lot and I started a lot of schools again and again. Went to school and I was very nervous,Teacher looked right through me . I can’t escape that .’
When two very different artists can interpret a song and both sound wonderful…that says something incredible. When the two artists perform it together and then hug each other after…it brought tears to my eyes.
I think if you liked that rendition, I really think you should hear this one by Pentatonix, its a whole other level in my opinion. Enjoy. 😎😎 ua-cam.com/video/Md8kADJwMQ0/v-deo.html
+jonathan Bach Sorry for your loss , Sometimes you dont understand or realise why a piece of music mean`s so much to some people , Until it is too late , I always feel that some of the song`s that invoke much emotion in me is also a desperate shout out for help , for someone to listen because i havent the heart to tell them what i`m feeling in word`s , but through my song`s. Hope that make`s sense..
Check out the original version by tears for fears. It'll give new perspective. The original is lively, and the cover by Jules is weary. Two sides of emotion on the same coin.
Curt smith said that Gary Jules version did more justice to the lyrics. After listening to Curt's singing Jules' version I must agree... Both singers make the song better with their own styles. Roland Orzabal wrote a song that can haunt even the coldest of hearts.
I think both versions went for different effects. The original juxtaposed the irony of upbeat music with dire lyrics. And that conflict is a truth of life, we are pushed to be happy when we are not. We feel glad and sad at the same time, this is life if you think about it. Whereas the cover, went right into the lyrics, and went for the pure starkness of those cutting, intensely down moments that bubble up in life. A song without peer for the end of Donnie Darko.
Guess that's another factor that makes this song so fantastic... I much prefer the original version, I genuinely think of a mad world with the original, not a sad world!
Ironically, I shed a tear, listening to Tears for Fears. That song is so hauntingly beautiful to me. Still just as relevant today as it was in 1983! What a great band.

This song was on TV as the background for TV ad for Gears of War (a video game). A few years later, my younger son, who I"d raised to respect our family's military background, died in Iraq, and this song took a special poignancy for me.
I feel Curt is being hated for singing this, but hey, he's the original singer. I love both versions, although my favorite will always be the original, Curt's voice just melts me, and here he adapted his voice to make the song sound more serious and deep. What a beautiful song.
I don't think Curt Smith always got the recognition for his contribution to Tears for Fears. Roland is clearly a hugely talented guy but some bands are larger than the sum of their parts. Great cover.
I love this song this version was the first time I heard it. I live in the UK on Christmas Day sitting with my sister waiting for mum to finish cooking Xmas dinner. We were sitting watching MTV and this was the Xmas no.1 song. At the the time Xmas no.1 was a really big deal here in the UK. You actually described their differences quite well
Amazing....Miss Curt's voice
Curt and Gary doing this live is awesome to hear. I was 31 when I first heard it in the 80's. I like both videos as well.
Hauntingly beautiful..
It's funny how Gary sings this like a suicide anthem, whilst Curt's rendition is a gentler and more innocent reflection on life.
@19raidersfan71 No it really isn't. Just individual interpretations.
should have started your post with "i find it kind of funny . . . "
@@realitybytez I meant to, but forgot when I started writing. Brain fog.
Beautiful!!! Thanks for sharing this. You could see that Gary Jules was chuffed to play his version with Curt, and Curt was humbled at how wonderful his version is.
Such a beautiful version. I loved Donnie Darko...and when I first heard this years ago...it hit me like a brick.
Great tune and Artist. We tried with my friend from R&O to review this great song. Maybe we succeeded, maybe not, we let you be the judge if you have two or three minutes to spare and a thumb up or down to add, come listen and judge us here :-) : ua-cam.com/video/hhnGZSn-6d4/v-deo.html
A major heart felt rendition. Love the song both by Gary and TFF.
The words are haunting
Stunning, pure quality. Also, love the genuine fondness they show for each other at the end.
Fantastic
I liked them both, gripping, and raw and real.
I love Tears for Fears and love this slow version of the song. Awesome how generations are coming together over music.
A voz do Curt continua igualmente suave, maravilhosa Não canso de ouvi-la
Hermoso

Love this version, it speaks to me lately more than ever. I these hectic times I find it soothing to listen to.
This performance is so good for this song. With these powerful lyrics. Perfect!
Gary Jules took a great song by a great band and made it a classic.

Just enjoy this , and quit trying to attach yourself to this guys ,masterpiece rendition of the original ..
Oh, mi Curt. Cuánto lo amo...iQué voz!
UNBELIEVABLE!!!!..what a great song and collaboration!!!!!!!
LOVE the collaboration guys! an all time fav of mine since childhood. WAY TO GO!
I didn't know that Curt is being hated for singing this. If so, I find it odd.
loved this song 34!!!! yrs ago, still love it today
Lovely performance!
Beautiful version and a fitting melding of the two versions
I don't think Curt Smith always got the recognition for his contribution to Tears for Fears. Roland is clearly a hugely talented guy but some bands are larger than the sum of their parts. Great cover.
I'm thrilled that curt smith sang it the way gary did aswell but I still love the way he first did it. And that roland did a cool dance to it then.
awesome combo
I love this song this version was the first time I heard it. I live in the UK on Christmas Day sitting with my sister waiting for mum to finish cooking Xmas dinner. We were sitting watching MTV and this was the Xmas no.1 song. At the the time Xmas no.1 was a really big deal here in the UK. Ironic that possibly one of the most depressing songs reached no.1 status on the biggest day of celebration in the calendar. Loved this collaboration as well, great song.
Yes, Curt is back with TFF now. Even though Roland recorded great albums while Curt was not in, i like it he’s back..
