It's crazy hearing this version compared to the Gary Jules version. (yes, I know this is the original) Gary Jules' version makes you feel a sense of depression, like you see the whole world through the lens of depression and sadness. This version gives you the sense of being truly mad. Like being trapped in a depressed state, but also feeling happy and anxious at the same time. Like you don't know what to do. Truly mad.
I love this. The Gary Jules version is the sadness of depression but this is the full embodiment of depression. Putting on the face that everything is good while one suffers from an intense sadness.
I had a severe depressive episode, most of what I remember of it was uncontrollable laughter, the periods of sadness was actually part of the recovery. If you stop caring about your life, why are you going to be sad about it? Madness is uncontrollable, sadness is, so if life feels out of control, madness is where you mind goes.
As a comment on this video said, the tears for Fears version is full on Madness. Trapped in a cycle of going nowhere, doing nothing different, hoping there's a change from outside sources that will break it.

Brings back so many memories, 1 of the most haunting albums ever made, there were very dark lyrics but great songs. So few albums you can just put on and enjoy every song!
This song is about a depressed young person who feels out of place in this world. He sees life as being empty, and looks for ways to escape the pain. The line, "The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had" suggests thoughts of suicide, but according to Roland Orzabal, who wrote the lyrics, it relates to the psychologist Arthur Janov's idea that our most dramatic dreams release the most tension. So, the guy in the song isn't necessarily looking to die - he wakes up from morbid, lucid dreams feeling better.
But seriously, I hate having good dreams. Because I wake up in this f-ed up world, and then I regret waking up, I want to sleep forever. On the other hand, when I dream with the end of the world, I wake up feeling in peace, because it's beautiful to dream that I'm dying and everything is ending.
Krypto_98 Tears for fears is the pop Verizon. Not sure where you feel the anxiety in this. I have anxiety and a panic disorder and the beat of this song doesn't fit that description.
As a kid, I thought Tears for Fears was just another 80s pop group. As an adult, listening to their music makes me realize just how incredibly _deep_ their songs actually were. Well shit.
It just cracks me up, because I can't dance. But if I did, it would look like that. I was at a night club once, and this pretty girl came up to me and said. "Please don't dance." I never danced in public again.
1982 was a good year. Although we still had madness back then. We didn't have social media to inform us. So please everyone reading this, I hope you take a break from social media and work on your well being and mental health. Don't concentrate on all the bad things. I hope you have peace in your heart. And always , no matter what year it is, always pray for 🙏🏻🌏☮️💕

I was 26 and living in London when this song was released. The club dance floors were overrun with people trying to do the Roland Olazabal moves... Great song...
I wish I could have been alive then. I’m 26 now. No one likes new wave that is my age, at least no one I know in person. And there is only one place to go that plays new wave one night a month and it is over run with creeps.
What I like about this video is it portrays two sides, one being what everyone else likes, the dancing. One is in this euphoric state, while the other is in a depressive state. The composition makes it seems jumpy and happy, but the lyrics tell a whole different story. They go against each other, but combining them together brings this rushed happy/sad song. Just perfect
@@daretodream9765 That is one reason why in a way I'm glad I heard Gary Jules's cover before I heard Tears for Fears do it. T4F version is dark but is also frenetic. A musical interpretation of Generalized Anxiety and Depression. Jules's cover is just depression -- almost a resigned depression.
@@briane173I've noticed people usually tend to like the version they discovered first (no matter original or cover) more, but sometimes it doesn't work. One could perceive this many ways, but I perceive Curt as being the mind and Roland being the face/body of someone who lives with depression/anxiety. Curt reflects on his own feelings and anxieties from behind the walls, while Roland dances and plays outside for the world to see
Nice analysis. You are mostly right. However, their lives flip flopped with Roland going through a lot of struggles with his wife dying from alcoholism. At the end of the day, Roland is far more emotional than Curt. Curt evolved into a very even keeled man and continued to be extremely productive in the music world. Roland seemed to fade away and almost disappear after Tears for Fears broke up. It’s been nice to see them back together again.

Roland's dance moves, if done accurately, will teleport you to 1985
I can do the dance and can confirm I am now living in the 1980’s.
Lol. But that would be awesome.

And if done inaccurately will teleport you to the Tektonik era... So be careful with it !

My take is that it’s talking about a man who actually likes psychological pain. Like a masochist I guess.

I never even knew that the gary jules version was a remake. I just found this version today and i instantly find it better in a strange and confusing way. Its the true depression, the one where you smile and deny it even though you cant shake it from the back of your mind.
I never even knew there was a remake until I searched the lyrics, I had to go back and tears for fears.

So glad I was fortunate enough to experience the 80’s
This song is about a depressed young person who feels out of place in this world. He sees life as being empty, and looks for ways to escape the pain. The line, "The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had" suggests thoughts of suicide, but according to Roland Orzabal, who wrote the lyrics, it relates to the psychologist Arthur Janov's idea that our most dramatic dreams release the most tension. So, the guy in the song isn't necessarily looking to die - he wakes up from morbid, lucid dreams feeling better.
You literally described me. Is that good?

I wish I could have been alive then. I’m 26 now. No one likes new wave that is my age, at least no one I know in person. And there is only one place to go that plays new wave one night a month and it is over run with creeps.

I can but imagine how it was like there at the time. I'm 17 in one week's time.
Damn. That's a sight to behold. A little jealous, not gonna lie.
Just perfect
agree, but I don't find the composition jumpy and happy at all, despite being upbeat. For me it's perfectly dark and depressing, from start to finish
@@daretodream9765 yeah especially when everything the world is upbeat but it's only you who's depressed. That makes it like 2x depressing
