None of these somber covers of this song would exist without Gary Jules showing them how it's done... this is a great cover, but to call it unique or say that it stands alone... this isn't a cover of Tears for Fears, because the original song was more pop... this is a cover of Gary Jules doing a cover of Tears for Fears. She is soooooo talented. I didn’t know this song, but this is a sublime performance by her and the whole group here. Is there anything Sierra can’t do? @@Azamra18 I had tickets to two of the three Nickel Creek shows at the Ryman that got canceled in April because Chris was sick. Anyway, Sean and Sara decided to do a free Watkins Family Hour show to make up for the canceled shows. Anyone who had tickets to one of the canceled shows (which were rescheduled) could attend (until they filled up the venue). It was one of the coolest shows I’ve ever seen. What’s really interesting is Sara told the audience that she called several people to see if they were in town (or could get to Nashville) in time to play the show with them. Everyone she called including Sierra told her that they had tickets to the show and we’re going to be there anyway. Sierra ended up playing mandolin with Sean and Sara on three Nickel Creek songs that night. It was impressive.
Really enjoying this version, this kind of voice and any good mandolin play will get me every time. Listening again to them. That last part..... Sierra's voice is quite magnificent. Something throaty, sibilant, and articulate. Also love the down, plaintive note on the 'cello that takes you into the sadness of the song. Musicianship at its very best. This is such a fantastic rendition. Yes, Roland and Curtis supplied the raw material, but wow! A masterpiece of a song, beautifully covered.
Wow what a great rendition of the original (one of my favourite songs ever) played on all my favourite string instruments by a band that I had never heard of! Simply amazing mandolin solo near the end!

Kudos to the drummer! Playing softly with energy is so hard. I’ve wondered about just using my fingers, now I know it’s okay :) And that mandolin solo was absolutely brilliant!
I was studying the simple cord progression of this song and this video popped up. I had never heard of her, but after the first time just listening and watching her floating and sometimes drowning, for lack of better words, in her music, I was just frozen how expressive she is, especially on the solo piece at the end... truly a gem and the best version by far to my ears.

You might give a listen to Adam Lambert’s acapella version of this on YT. I think it on American Idol.
Loved This!!
Jasmine Thompson and Jennifer Anne also do nice versions but this bluegrass cover is unique. Im hearing some Nanci Griffith in there too. St. Florianer is also worth a listen. Show how good writing transcends genre. Thanks to that I have found Sierra who was was unfamiliar with before this.
Just fighting internet hyperbole... best you ever heard, sure... unique, stands alone? Not so much...
Good point; Gary Jules version is beautiful. @@apelike
killer arrangement, excellent musicianship. I’m listening now.
The best version of this song...of which there are many.
She is soooooo talented. I didn’t know this song, but this is a sublime performance by her and the whole group here. Is there anything Sierra can’t do? Her mandolin playing is so off the charts amazing - and perhaps that results in her singing being underrated. She has such a sweet voice and really knows how to use it in a way that seems almost effortless but which draws out such feeling.
Nice! Though it's really just a cover/remake of Gary Jules cover (the movie Donnie Darko) of the Tears for Fears song. Besides the end solo, It would have been cool to see their actual version of the Tears of Fears song instead of redoing the Donnie Darko version
Can you just shut your trap and enjoy the cover?
I listen to a wide variety of music, and I have always loved Tears For Fears, but now the way Sierra and her band play this song makes me love bluegrass even more.
I have rewatched this probably 10 times, I cannot get over the mandolin solo. I want to show this to everyone I know who loves music and just vibe with them. That lick from 4:35-4:40 is a glimpse at divinity. Kudos to everyone, what a masterpiece of a cover.
Gosh, how is it even possible to play such a soulful solo on a Mandolin?
Mandolin solo is a first for me. But then I heard the Blues played on bagpipes earlier so, anything goes 🤪
If you think that’s good, go check out Chris Thile
I just want to clarify: that was GREAT! Just suggesting another Uber talented mandolinist.

I had tickets to two of the three Nickel Creek shows at the Ryman that got canceled in April because Chris was sick.

Omg 😳
Sounds like a dream
How this just showed up on my FYP, IDK - but I sure am happy that it did! These folks can jam! New fan
Freaking amazing. Honestly my favorite version.
She has such great emotional feel vocally and instrumentally. Amazing musician
Really enjoying this version, this kind of voice and any good mandolin play will get me every time. Listening again to them.
That last part..... Where the violin kind of bridges the sound of the mandolin, really makes me lean in. Didn't know what it was I was hearing.
Thanks for posting. I'd like to find more of their music.
Update: Found her, Sierra Hull, subscribed.
Gosh I love classical bassists. I would say it is one of my favourite instruments to hear when played by such a graceful player and is typically way underappreciated. My hats off to you all. BTW, hi from Australia.
Bloody fantastic!! Great control and dynamics from the band, such a sensitive lovely voice…. and killer mandolin solo…. I mean killer! Great work guys.
Haunting. A unique version worthy of the original.
30 years later, rural america is ready for tears for fears.
The Cars, too! Tim Mcgraw does a cover of "Drive" in the last few years.

Lovely version & so nice to see a mandolin "shredded"
Half of my family were poor Scots from Appalachia and this song hits me right in the DNA. Thank you for a beautiful cover of a great song.
All of my family are poor Scots from Scotland.
Awesome story. I'm sure next you'll tell us they all ran moonshine and were related to Jesse James. No one cares.
I love Sierra Dawn Hull's mandolin arrangement of this song. Up until now, I have never heard of her. Truly awesome!
I'd had no idea. Sierra's a goddess on the mando, but she can sing too?!? And the girl can SING! Sierra has the gift, and we are all the better for it when she shares.
Best solo I've ever heard on mandolin. Hands down. No question at all. Bless you sister!
Her voice and her talent playing mandolin deserves to be heard. I will be looking her up to hear more. FANTASTIC
In all these years of UA-cam, I have never heard something so magical! I can't tell you how exciting it was to hear every detail of this arrangement. And what a voice and mandolin! Absurdly brilliant!!!❤❤❤
Magnificent version of a truly great song about the harsh realities of the the world we live in Sierra's mandolin playing is always mindblowing love it.
Blown away. Just when you think there's not a new and original take on a classic, here comes one that is just musical perfection. And man, that solo at the end. So good.
Wow. Unforgettable, timeless, classic.
Nice! Though it's really just a cover/remake of Gary Jules cover (donnie darko) of Tears for Fears. It would have been cool to see their actual version of the Tears of Fears song
Well done, UA-cam algorithm! You get a cookie.
Wow what a great rendition of the original (one of my favourite songs ever) played on all my favourite string instruments by a band that I had never heard of! Simply amazing mandolin solo near the end!
This young Lady has the voice of an Angel , puts all the others to shame .
She is a real talent and very cute too !
Sometimes UA-cam puts something in front of me that I instantly fall in love with. Wow, just wow. I've never heard of or seen anything from you before now. Just a perfect voice that I'm going to be seeking out to see what else I can hear. Really hoping there is some acapella content. Thank you.
I don't know why, but I did not expect that voice from her. Amazing performance.
Shredding. Ones of my favs, reminds me of SRV Live @ the El Mocambo, " Third Stone from the Sun". both of these are,
true passion + talent = classic
Kudos to the drummer! Playing softly with energy is so hard. I’ve wondered about just using my fingers, now I know it’s okay :) And that mandolin solo was absolutely brilliant!
I wish more drummers used brushes - brings a different layer to this tune, for sure
🤯👏🏻‼️ Damn, got me stuck in the moment. Brought a tear to my eye! Absolutely beautiful, stellar!! 🎶🎵🎶
I can listen to this version over and over and still not get bored!!!!! She is smoking on the last few minutes.
