  • What breaks a fast? So you’re trying intermittent fasting, and you have questions! Will this break my fast? Will that break my fast?
    I get loads of questions about what does break a fast and what doesn't break a fast. It's a tricky question, that requires a bit of knowledge about what you're trying to achieve. As usual, the focus on this channel is weightloss.
    My aim is that you can see that fasting isn't quite as strict as perhaps people often think.

    you have an amazing way of respecting and validating differing points of view and explaining the differences and results of choosing one belief over another.
    if more people followed your lead on this, the world would be a less contentious place!

The CULPRIT was my EXPENSIVE Lactose-free Milk in my day-long drinking of Lattes. I did not know it contained SUGAR as a result of them using enzymes to break down the lactose. My glucose levels are now NORMAL, for the last week! This, after 3 months of not knowing WHY I couldn't get the "BC" to normal levels, no matter how strict a diet I was following. Great coverage Your videos helped me at the beginning of the year on a three month intermittent fast, where every other day I ate nothing. Including artificial sweeteners and a morning macchiato I had somewhere between 20 and 60 kcal. It was one of my more successful corrections, with the main downside of being a lack of energy on the morning after the fast. I think a reason why is because of the other benefits to this form of weight loss. I really would appreciate a guide like this video that focused on the awareness and focus that you get from fasting instead of weight loss.

    I'm already managing 18-20hrs fasting most days but do occasionally need a 'snack' & this video has reassured me that what I've had (little bit of cheese etc) won't have disrupted things much except my lifelong habit of a glass of milk at bedtime. I'm really going to have look closely at my milk consumption but my concern is how to replace the calcium content. Cheese? Butter?

    Enjoyed this. Simple explanations about health. I try to apply the principles described and have had success in in the past working towards an acceptable body weight and BMI. I was once diagnosed with severe sleep apnœia and heading towards being fitted with CPAP. I tackled it through a rigid diet, achievement a healthy weight, eliminated my apnoea and was signed off by the hospital. My sleep disorder, however, stubbornly resists all my attempts to solve it, so I'd really live to hear what I can do next.

    Hi Dr. Maggs! So happy I found your channel. I've really been enjoying your videos and learning so much about keto and IF!
    I had one question: I just started a 16:8 fasting schedule yesterday. Normally I take a prebiotic fiber supplement first thing in the morning, and I'm curious to hear your thoughts on what effects it might have on my insulin levels. I understand fiber does not affect insulin, but the drink powder also contains a marginal amount of sugar (0.9g) - You mention sometimes a splash of milk might be fine, but what should the general "upper limit" of carb consumption be when fasting for weight loss? Clearly zero would be best, but I would love to hear your input on this. Sorry for the ultra-specific question! Thanks

    Terrific video. I would love to see a video on artificial sweeteners. There is so much controversy in the few studies that have been done. I'm a retired RN. I developed C-diff after taking antibiotics for an abscessed tooth a year and a half ago. After eight days in the hospital my recovery was complicated by the cost of the antibiotics. Ten days of Vancomycin cost $5000 with my copay being $1600. I refused to pay that much, so my recovery was prolonged considerably. What finally set me right was taking a probiotic supplement. I was so impressed by how much the probiotic helped that I have continued to take them daily ever since. Since starting IF and Keto, I've stopped all my diabetes meds except invokana and my blood glucose runs between 90 and 140 fasting or postprandial. My blood glucose was even better when I was taking metformin, but the GI side effects of metformin are pretty bad for me. No more than my blood glucose went up without it, I can live with the difference. Six months ago my hemoglobin A1C was 11.8. The next one was 8.1. I'm hoping for under 6 for my next one. I've read about artificial sweeteners adversely affecting gut bacteria. My question is do you think that taking a probiotic may offset some of those changes? I typically drink four cups of coffee with one sweetener each day and then green tea with one sweetener the rest of the day with as much water as I can force myself to drink. When my blood glucose was high, I drank water like there were going to stop making it next week. Now that my sugar is under much tighter control, I struggle to drink water at all. Your videos have been very helpful to me.

    • @DrDanMaggs
      @DrDanMaggs  4 роки тому +3

      Hi! Thanks for your comment. R.e. probiotics offsetting any potential downside.... I'd be guessing I'm afraid! The science in the area of sweeteners is not very good, same for the effectiveness of probiotics! Have you tried cutting down your sweeteners?

    I find your videos truly enlightening- learning a lot- very simple and after the initial getting used to the "British accent" as most of the ketosis videos seem to be from Americans, I am getting quite addicted to your knowledge tank, in a way, picking your brains.
    I am obese( there is no other word for it) and have been trying to lose weight for maybe 40 years- ( I am 50)- I do succeed sometimes but more often fail. Now at a particularly low phase - as living in a food desert and being a college student again is taking a toll.
    For the past month, have been low carb and high fat- but as you noted, the bullet proof coffee was not causing a weight loss for me- I took one every morning - with butter, coconut oil, cream, and coffee and a breakfast cum lunch cum dinner around 5 pm ( followed this pattern for about three weeks) - no weight loss, so decided to go completely off food- have been doing it for five days now- only water and black coffee( which I usually hate as it gives me acidity and migraines)- as a surprise, I have lost about 8 pounds in 4 days- surely water weight but not much urine passing either day or night.
    My urine strips do show significant ketones now. But the blood ketones are still low and the blood glucose I tested yesterday evening after a round of exercise in the cold weather, came to 150- very surprised as I am typically not diabetic , at least I don't think so.
    My question is, do you think a low carb ketogenic diet can reverse lipoma or skin tags or xanthalesma- all of which I have?

      That's a great question. Unfortunately I don't know the answer but that's great you're working to get healthy!

    Dr. Dan, Thank you a lot for all of these great guidelines for healthy lifestyle. I'm on intermittent fasting and see a very good response from my body and blood sugar. I would like to know 1) Does fresh coconut water break my fast? 2) Does Lemon water with SALT break my fast? 3) Does Kashmiri Kahwa , product name "Girnar Green Tea, Desi Kahwa
    " available on Amazon India (tried to put the url here but it was very lengthy) break my fast. Thanks so much for all the help! Best Regards, Arvind Purohit

    Love your fasting info! I'm doing a 20:4 daily fasting. Lately I've been liking dill/kosher pickles, even the pickle juice in my green Iced tea. They have 0 calories ... do they break the fast?

      The folks at Keto Connect have a fantastic video about artificial sweeteners and their glycemic impact: Allulose, liquid stevia, and erythritol have the best numbers showing little to no raise in levels while xylitol and maltitol were shown to drastically raise blood glucose within half an hour of ingesting them. Sucralose is also okay in liquid form (not combined with maltodextrin which has a high impact as well.) They use blood glucose and ketone testers to demonstrate.

    Dear Dr Maggs,
    I have recently started using high quality marscapone cheese, as a substitute for milk & cream in drinks and as a condiment. It tastes divine. The nutrition label clearly says zero carbs. Does this mean marscapone cheese is a good Keto food option? Would eating some break a fast?
    Best wishes,
    Simon

      Has it helped you? I’m sure that was your issue because one girl I watched said that less then 30 calories in her coffee each morning was ok for her in fasting to MAINTAIN her weight but she was NOT ever losing more until she started drinking black coffee only during her fasting morning times

    • @billcrawford4547
      @billcrawford4547 7 місяців тому

      That level of coffee could be the problem, though if you are used to it, could be very difficult to reduce. I have read where higher amounts of coffee can trigger hormone resp0nses, though I am not sure how. Consider some green tea to replace some of the coffee?
      Have you considered some exercise as a way to jump start fat burning? Exercise (for me it was 30 days of skiing in 6 weeks) eviscerated my stubborn belly fat when 16:8 fasting had stalled. YMMV, but good luck on your journey.

    Thanks for the awesome videos. But I do have a question about Stevia. I have read that stevia actually has a positive effect on blood glucose and is considered "healthy", but I have noticed most stevia erythritol. You mentioned anything ending with "... tol" should be avoided. Thoughts?
