I was diagnosed pre-diabetic. I decided to go to a low carb no fruit, no alcohol diet. I eat some vegetables but just the ones that I am supposed to eat. I hope this will help. I have been on this diet for three months and right away lost nine pounds. This diet and working out at the gym very hard have made me feel much better. Before going on this diet I didn't need to lose weight but I did right away. I am 68 years old and diabetes runs in my family!! Oh well thanks for the video DR. and stay healthy!!
I follow the same diet and decided to adopt it for the rest of my life❤❤. Also found out im prediabetic my doctor told me to hit the gym right away and follow a strict healthy diet.
@HITZONE86 Took me few months. I didn't do it in one single stretch. Took a break for weeks or even months after each 7 to 10 kg of weight loss. My advice to anyone planning to follow the scheme: Getting back on the diet regime becomes tougher each time you break and hop off it.
Kelloggs said it. And all the other cereal manufacturers. No breakfast , no money. You’ll find most dietitians degrees are funded by large donations from nestle, Kellogg’s etc... and that’s why the traditional food pyramid favoured starches/manufactured foods.
You gave me an AH HA moment! So basically every time I inject insulin I’m sending glucose into my fat cells. So I need to reduce my need for insulin. And I didn’t realize there was zero need for carbs. This info is literally changing my life. BIG THANKS!
I have a son with type one diabetes. It has been fascinating to be able to see in real time how each of these factors affects his blood glucose levels. I am watching these videos for myself because I know I feel better when I’m doing a keto diet.Thank you for sharing your knowledge
I lost 20 pounds so far and it has been such a struggle to lose more. I have been feel like my body is fighting me and don’t want to give up the weight. This video is giving me hope. Thank you!
Yes the first 20 lbs is easy for me to drop them I can’t loose more get discouraged and buy it back on plus some. I keep restricting calories and end up lethargic and fatigued also. I think this video will help a lot. I’ve had pcos since I was a preteen and never understood it until now fingers crossed I can beat this I want to be healthy and have a baby 🥰
And please don't be discouraged, remind yourself that you're doing this to stay fit and to celebrate what your body can do. You're already doing great. Keep your motivations up by shifting your goals to stay active or stay fit rather than to lose or shed weight. Shifting my goals to staying active/ fit has worked so efficiently for me, it has completely changed my perspective about exercise. "Exercise should be a celebration of what your body can do and not a punishment of what you ate." This statement helped me change my perspective. I hope it helps you both too.
I'm discovering that the two worst words for a dieter are:Just and Only,as in I'll just have one of...;or'I only had one. The most important word is:Lifestyle,as in I'm making this my lifestyle. To your continued success.
I’m a Muslim. And I love Ramadan. Fasting 17/18 hours each day during Ramadan month. Everyone thinks we struggle but really and truly we enjoy it so much. By the end of it we are so energetic and healthy(if you have a good diet).
Furthermore, Muslims have additional fasts on Monday and Thursdays each week throughout the year, and also the middle 3 days of each month, based on Prophetic tradition. Also, the manner in which Muslims eat, by always sitting, splitting the meal into 1/3 water, 1/3 air and 1/3 food promotes mindful and intuitive consumption. Also, small meals, snacks etc are more traditional with saturated animal fats being consumed very sporadically. Wonderful signs for those who truly reflect.
I'm 66 years old and overweight. I started a 20/4 Fasting/eating cycle. Prior to this I was tired all the time and had to nap a lot, but never felt well rested. After a few day on this 20/4 cycle, it was like a switch was thrown. Now I don't feel worn out all the time and I have energy again. For months the bottoms of my feet were tender and walking was very painful. Even after a few days, the pain is reduced and I can walk around without any real pain. I'm still only 5 days into this, but I wish I had known what I know now years ago.
@Bob Diaz Had the same experience. Started a low carb diet and 18/6 fasting/eating on a friday, by sunday I had not gone hungry throughout the day, slept much better and no naps.
@Arsh Bhushan 18/6 refers to 18 hours of fasting and a 6 hour window where I eat my meals. Usually I skip breakfast and goes for a lunch around 12 pm, then a dinner around 5 or 6 pm. Then I only drink water or tea for the next 18 hours until 12 pm again.
You are the first British gp I have come across who explains this really well. Thank you. I lost 2 stones on intermittent fasting last summer. I let carbs back into my diet and put on 3 stones. So going back to low carb / intermittent fasting
I need to hear this in some form every day! Fortunately there are at least 5 or 6 UA-cam channels (that I know) that are great that are discussing this.
Excellent video.. Thank you Dr Dan. I lost 76 pounds eating a low carb (one meal a day) approach. I fasted on average about 20-22 hours a day and I walked an average 10,000 to 30,000 steps a day. All of what you said is so true and so simple and so very powerful. I wrote an e-book about my journey. It is so important to share our own journeys and knowledge. Thank you for all you do. Keep up the good work you do.
@@uaevattax793 I do a early dog walk and can do over 10 thousand steps, some days I can do over 30 thousand, on average it's 23 thousand. If I do cardio, stepper, that increases my steps. We are designed to stand up and walk, I stand up all day at work.
Hi Dr. Maggs...I recently found your channel and am happy that I did. I'm new to counting carbs as I've been doing it for 3 weeks. I've lost 10 lbs and am very satisfied with my progress. Once I passed the initial carb withdrawal I was so surprised that my cravings disappeared and I stayed sated much longer, in fact seldom feel hungry. I began intermittent fasting every four days. I'm unsure how often I should or could fast, but I'm happy with the results thus far. So, I'm thanking you for your guidance. I'm sold on low carb for life!

Great video. I am 49 years old. I do intermittent fasting everyday. I have way more energy and am more productive during my fasting period. I take Ashwaraganda to control cortisol levels. I am lean and in better shape than I was when I was in my thirties. Carbs for people over 30 will increase weight... Period. Your 5 steps work. I am living proof of that. 😁
This is awesome. I will introduce intermittent fasting this year, I have started already with exercise, I am also reducing my daily cabs intake. I am so grateful to follow this video. Thanks again Doc
I always thought it was silly to think I had to eat breakfast. I never ate breakfast growing up and I was never hungry and I was never overweight until I turned 45 and became vegetarian and started eating lot of carbs for first time in my life. I got up to 150 lbs and had high blood pressure. Hypothyroidism and belly fat. That was 50 pounds more than I ever weighed in my life. Now on a low carb diet at 66 I finally got down to 130 but I’m still 30 pounds more than I should be. My family makes it hard to keep low carb. My Husband loves to eat and so does the other 6 family members who live with me temporarily. This Doctor knows what he is talking about. He motivates me to keep up the diet even when I have all these food temptations around me all day.
One of my favorite things in “pre-keto” life was to eat a full carbs breakfast and then go back to sleep. 🤣 because that’s what breakfast does to me: tiredness and sleepyhead 😴
Thank you. My GP has told me that my cholesterol and blood pressure are too high. I have exercised for 70 years until an injury to my foot in 2020. Since then, I have done very little. I have gained a stone in weight and my stress levels are much higher. I have had 2 cortisone injections in my foot to no avail. I am now awaiting surgery. I am reducing my carbon from today. I have just been for a short walk, but now in pain.

I'm not an expert at all, but I've been watching (almost) every video about it on UA-cam😂, that's why I can tell you're doing a great job explaining everything related 😊 Sorry for my English, it's my fourth lenguaje, I'm still learning 🙃

I love breakfast! Though I started IF and learning that eating breakfast is more of a habit vs satisfying my hunger. Going to incorporate these ideas in the video in my 2nd week of IF.
Hi Dan. Just wanted to say a huge thankyou to you for your amazing content. I started down the rabbit hole of intermittent fasting and low carb around 9 months ago and to date lost 3 stone. I am excited to see GPs like yourself and David unwin flying the UK flag. Until I came across you both I felt like I was unable to give my type 2 diabetic patients dietary advice as I would be going against the advice they were getting from their GPs. So, thankyou for giving me a place to point people towards who want to take control of their own health. I can relate so much to your story in myself and it is an exciting journey to be a part of helping people realise that they can change their lives. Thanks again. Rob
That is me to a "T". I can go all day and not eat a thing, but the moment I start eating I want to eat the rest of the day. I was carbohydrate intolerant as a child. Especially high carb breakfast cereal, would leave me shaky, weak and sweaty long before lunch time at school. So I quit eating breakfast in elementary school much to my mother's consternation.
What do you eat for breakfast? If you have carbs then your body will likely go into the carb craving/hunger cycle, especially if your body is insulin resistant. I find that if I eat eggs for breakfast then I’m not hungry again until late afternoon. Whereas if I eat cereal (or toast I/muffins/fruit/yoghurt) then I’m hungry all day. hope this helps ..
I eat and drink once every 23 hours. I go to the gym twice a day most days. My skin is soft and glowing and I get a good nights sleep of 8 hours. Thanks for sharing this information, much appreciated.
@@doc68good60 I have structure to my life, this helps your body. Also if you don't stress about everything. I put my head on the pillow and I am thankful for the day and I am asleep in about 10 or 15 minutes.
I totally work at what I call Lo Carb/No Carb eating = always push to eliminate sugar. I do OMAD or ADF. My biggest issues are with walking - I have neuropathy and can go aboaut 6,000 to 7,000 steps before I start swelling. And the sleep/stress. I have insomnia. So, I may not sleep but I REST -- lay down, close eyes, listen to music - until I can fall asleep. I sleep maybe 3-4 hours max at a time. With stress, I am a teacher = high stress. So summer is a time to recharge and detox and try to mellow out before Fall starting school. I totally agree about the sleep loss affecting your DECISIONS. I journal to try to control my eating when I'm tired and not thinking clearly. REALLY enjoy your programs -- understandable, simple and direct, totally agree with your steps. Thank you. Very on target with what I've done so far and with Dr. Jason Fung and his research. Well done!!

Just started my first week Dan. I can honestly say I have felt really strange, but hungry I am not. I am in ketosis, I have tested. I dream a lot more, can’t sleep a full night. On the upside have lost 11 pounds in 6 days. Really find your channel easy to understand, no jargon. Thanks
Fasting is excellent. I am a Muslim and right now during the holy month of Ramadan, the Fasting period is 16.5 hours. No eating, No Drinking. Once Ramadan is over, I am going to try for the first time to observe Fasting for 18 to 20 hours. It does magic to your body and mind. Good video though 👌
These are almost like 4 principles I learnt from a MOOC on brain health which are the following: 1. Diet: low carb or intermittent fasting or Mediterranean diet 2. Exercise: one that increases your heart rate to medium/high level 3. Good sleep: enough quality sleep you feel refreshed after (for me it's 9 hours minimum) 4. Meditation: to reduce stress and to rewire your brain Thanks for the video!
@@marcopolo9146 Thank you for your response. I'm so worn down, I am having trouble coping. Just one thing after another, some of them overlapping. The business closed and I had to find work, My fiance died. I was saddled with being a trustee for a friend and her surviving spouse was so hard to deal with, I developed an anxiety disorder. After being told by doctors for years “you just need to diet” and gaining more and more weight as the years went by, I’m so thrilled that doctors like Dr Maggs and Dr Fung are bringing the thruth to light!!!!! Since starting my mostly carnivore life style and IF I have lost 55lbs and feel amazing!!!! Some days are hard and sometimes I give myself permission to eat what I want for a very occasionally meal (once per 2 weeks or less) I feel healthier now then I did 20 years ago
I love breakfast!! I usually am very hungry an hour after I wake in the morning. So I just eat. Then I get a bit hungry around 4pm. It works for me to eat very very low carb (10-15 grams) all day
I followed the advice from Dr. Maggs about low carbohydrate diet, intermittent fasting, exercise, stress reduction & more sleep. I easily went from 210 to 154 pounds. It works. The best stress reduction for me is 3x daily prayer in the form of wearing Tefillin & reciting the Shema prayer. I eat avocados, asparagus, artichoke and many low carbohydrate vegetables daily as well. I have meals only at 6 & 11 am. I consume 6 ounces a day of psyllium husk fiber to maintain regularity as well.
Great delivery on this subject! Weight training offers a double whammy to improve insulin sensitivity. Muscles make up the largest glycogen stores in the body and a good training session depletes those like you said creating short term sensitivity benefits. However, training increases those glycogen stores as your muscle mass grows, creating bigger stores for the dietary sugar on subsequent meals and days.
An awesome low carb breakfast or brunch: Stir-fry 120g of frozen or fresh spinach with a teaspoon of light olive oil until wilted and and water is gone (2-3 mins). Add 3 eggs and scramble together with the wilted spinach (1 min). Serve in a small bowl and sprinkle with grated Parmesan for flavour and salt. 5 minutes prep time, only 360kCal, and you'll feel full and relaxed until dinner!
Thanks for that, Dan. Breakfast - can take it or leave it. As for the 5 tips, I was a long distance runner for years, but could never really lose the belly fat. At 178cm, I could never get below 80.5kg. The reason was because of diet, I think. Lately, I have been focusing on all 5 of these areas, but I am just starting out. Not really sure what my weight is now, but it is at least 83.5kg. Trying to get to 75-77, so I will cut out all alcohol for 30 days (today is day 3), and continue w the other 5. My new bike just arrived, so off I go on a ride on my new wheels! 😊 BTW, I am almost 61 years old. 🤪
Best of luck with it, Dave. It’s amazing how many long distance runners do indeed struggle to lose the belly fat. Definitely one of the reasons we have to look beyond the calories in vs calories out theory of weight loss. Be sure to let me know how you get on and be safe on that new bike! :-)
@@DrDanMaggs "Be safe on that bike." I live in Ho Chi Minh City, where that is absolutely the number 1 imperative - traffic here is crazy. As for getting on, I think I am being successful. I guessed my starting weight to be 83.5kg. It had to be at least that much, but let's say it was that. In one week, I went down to 80.8, as weighed this morning upon first getting up. However, I ate a bunch of nutsast night - oops! But feeling confident. Thanks for your reply, Doc.
I've learned so much from you that I have from these "fitness gurus". Thank you so much! I gained +35 lbs during the pandemic and I had no clue why I was struggling with my weight. I think these factors you've mentioned nailed the spot. I do have some issues with sleep, carb intake, and a sedentary lifestyle. Will definitely keep you in the loop on the improvement!
This would have to be the best, most concise, fact-filled and well delivered video on the subject that I've ever seen on UA-cam. Personally, I'd never been a breakfast person except when I'd go away on holiday and stay in motels on my journey. In Australia you ordered the breakfast the night before and in the morning the breakfast would be delivered to your room, placed in a box built into the wall from the outside. There'd be a knocking and you'd open up the box from inside your room and voila, breakfast! Being relaxed and de-stressed gave me an appetite :)
Hi Dr Dan, your videos are fantastic, I love breakfast and after starting my breakfast, at times have struggled to stop eating. Recently (early Dec 2021) I have got over that by doing time restricted eating. Initially I just ate at work and also did did one 40 hour fast over a weekend. Then on annual leave (over Christmas period) I started eating for just 4 hours a day (10am to 2pm). Today I just finished a 5 day fast. I am very conscious with regard carbs in everything I eat now (thanks in part to your videos). One thing that really helped me get through my fasting periods recently was EFT tapping. This is because trying to restrict our eating does have a psychological element particularly when the hunger pains get overwhelming. Just wondering if you could introduce EFT tapping to your viewers as it may help some of them as well?
I was encouraged by this video because aside from the stress management i am following all your recommendations. I have not, however, completely dialed in my low carb diet and have seen my weight loss plateau. I have added resistance training in the last two weeks to my HIIT walking.
Doing IF and keto/carnivore combination. Lost 22kg so far, got 10kg to go before im at my goal weight. My weightloss is mainly because I cut ny sugar and carbs to very low, 5g..or 10g sometimes. Im never hungry! Thanks for a great video.
Hi Dan, I love your videos. This one was spot on as usual and really nailed that big five, all of which are important, work together so well and just enhance your life to a degree you would not imagine possible before you really try. Keep up the good work, Dan, Andrew (from France)

I adapted pretty quickly to 16:8 intermittent fasting, and I didnt find it very hard to stop eating after 8pm, skip breakfast and only eat after 12 noon. I lift weights several times a week in the morning and so far have lost around 3kg in the last 3 weeks. I have tried to add in more protein as I am worried about losing muscle. I think trying to gain muscle while losing fat is the hardest part of any type of fasting. The risk with 16:8 is not being able to consume enough protein in the 8 hour feeding window.
I have reduced carbs in my diet by eliminating anything with flour, sugar, grains and have tracked my blood glucose levels keeping them below 6.9mmol/litre. Post meal. I eat lots of low carb veggies, moderate protein and healthy natural fats. I have naturally reduced my eating frequency to once a day.... and then most days I am not even hungry. The result... 40 pounds down in two months and then another 8-10 pounds a month after that. Low carb diet with intermittent fasting reduces insulin and your body burns what it has.... fat!
Dr Dan Maggs thanks. Success is a result of understanding human physiology and take control of it back from what hijacked it.... insulin! I eat insulin free! It works.... 50 pounds more to go .... or a lifetime.... which ever is longer!
Watching this video again... I am down another 30 pounds. I have started training to run my first marathon. I have a 1/2 marathon in February & my first marathon in May. I am going to shed another 20-30 pounds in 2020. Maintaining the course on a low carb diet and have learned lots about what makes my body tick.

Of course! Keto, IF & occasional OMAD. Lost 26.1 Kgs.
@HITZONE86
Took me few months. I didn't do it in one single stretch. Took a break for weeks or even months after each 7 to 10 kg of weight loss. My advice to anyone planning to follow the scheme: Getting back on the diet regime becomes tougher each time you break and hop off it.
Early advertisers promoted breakfast being so so important in order to sell their breakfast cereals and foods. It’s a myth.
Kelloggs said it. And all the other cereal manufacturers. No breakfast , no money. You’ll find most dietitians degrees are funded by large donations from nestle, Kellogg’s etc... and that’s why the traditional food pyramid favoured starches/manufactured foods.
Breaking the overnight fast. Hahaha
Loved this video!
I eat a lot of carbs, I am overweight, always hungry and tired. You opened my eyes to how to start eating better! Thank You!!!!!
I've recently realised breakfast is more enjoyable at lunch time, just found this channel like it, feeling positive I'm type 2 diabetic from Ireland
It seems like you've reached a plateau. Try and find out more about "Insulin resistance", I believe that would help you.
Same here, 🥵
I'm discovering that the two worst words for a dieter are:Just and Only,as in I'll just have one of...;or'I only had one.
Can't wait tell April 🎊🎉

I'm 66 years old and overweight. I started a 20/4 Fasting/eating cycle. Prior to this I was tired all the time and had to nap a lot, but never felt well rested. After a few day on this 20/4 cycle, it was like a switch was thrown. Now I don't feel worn out all the time and I have energy again. For months the bottoms of my feet were tender and walking was very painful. Even after a few days, the pain is reduced and I can walk around without any real pain. I'm still only 5 days into this, but I wish I had known what I know now years ago.
Bob Diaz Wow!!! That is AWESOME!! Keep up the good work!
@Bob Diaz
Had the same experience.
Started a low carb diet and 18/6 fasting/eating on a friday, by sunday I had not gone hungry throughout the day, slept much better and no naps.
What is 18/6
@Arsh Bhushan
18/6 refers to 18 hours of fasting and a 6 hour window where I eat my meals.
Usually I skip breakfast and goes for a lunch around 12 pm, then a dinner around 5 or 6 pm. Then I only drink water or tea for the next 18 hours until 12 pm again.
Thanks man😊
You are the first British gp I have come across who explains this really well.
Great video Dr. Dan,
Here is my top 4 work on list:
1. Quality sleep
2. Less stress
3. Less eating at night
4. Excercize

This is real! It is not a hypothesis or just a field of scientific research. That's exactly what happens.

🤣 because that’s what breakfast does to me: tiredness and sleepyhead 😴
elevated blood sugar followed by the 'carb crash!' Been there lol!!
I am 64 and most of my life I never ate breakfast and when I do I regret it

Rob
I lost half of my hair doing a low carb diet and it’s not growing back

I hate breakfast. When I eat breakfast my energy level falls and I eat non stop the whole day.
Same.

Well done!!

Your video gave me hope and calmed down my discouragement.
These are almost like 4 principles I learnt from a MOOC on brain health which are the following:
1. Diet: low carb or intermittent fasting or Mediterranean diet
2. Exercise: one that increases your heart rate to medium/high level
3. Good sleep: enough quality sleep you feel refreshed after (for me it's 9 hours minimum)
4. Meditation: to reduce stress and to rewire your brain
Thanks for the video!
Stress. I have been living under near constant stress for years.
Me too. I don’t know how people can avoid it. The task is to address it while you are experiencing it. Exercise and meditation probably.
@@marcopolo9146 Thank you for your response. I'm so worn down, I am having trouble coping. Just one thing after another, some of them overlapping.
An awesome low carb breakfast or brunch:
Stir-fry 120g of frozen or fresh spinach with a teaspoon of light olive oil until wilted and and water is gone (2-3 mins).
I liked your recap at the end.🙂

I adapted pretty quickly to 16:8 intermittent fasting, and I didnt find it very hard to stop eating after 8pm, skip breakfast and only eat after 12 noon. I lift weights several times a week in the morning and so far have lost around 3kg in the last 3 weeks. I have tried to add in more protein as I am worried about losing muscle. I think trying to gain muscle while losing fat is the hardest part of any type of fasting. The risk with 16:8 is not being able to consume enough protein in the 8 hour feeding window.
Shrimp might help, shrimp is low calorie high protein. And a natural whole food.
Low carb diet with intermittent fasting reduces insulin and your body burns what it has.... fat!
Amazing results! Well done Corwyn! Thanks for watching!
Dr Dan Maggs thanks. Success is a result of understanding human physiology and take control of it back from what hijacked it.... insulin! I eat insulin free! It works.... 50 pounds more to go .... or a lifetime.... which ever is longer!
Corwyn Warwaruk That’s a really nice way of putting it! I might use that! :-)
Best of luck with the remaining 50!
