  • In this video I'm going to be going into the most common reason that people object to the ketogenic diet on safety grounds... and importantly, trying to find out whether there is actually any evidence to support these.
It's a long video, but there is lots to talk about! Hope you like it!

Hi Dr. Dann, I am 62 years old and was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease and was devastated at age 60. The Irish Parkinson's Society sent out a link to a Neurologist in New Zealand who has studied the positive effects of a keto diet and fasting. His name is Dr. Matthew C L Phillips. I watched his webannair and decided to follow his 'Metabolic Therapy Program'. Nine months and my tremor is gone, I don't fall so no more fractures. I've lost loads of weight and my GP said my bloods were a miracle. No more fatty liver or pre diabetic. Cholesterol down. I feel amazing and happy that I am in control of this.
Thanks for all your great videos. It really helps that you are a 'real' doc and so is he. People around me support my keto lifestyle without the worry of a 'quack' leading me to a quick death! Una

I am prone to kidney stones, they've landed me in hospital twice. I have not had any incidence of kidney stones whilst on a keto diet over the last 4 years. My husband is a kidney transplant recipient due to an autoimmune disease and subsequent misdiagnosis destroying his kidney function. He's been keto for over 2 years and his body size has gone from obese (due to steroids and illness) to an ideal weight according to the NHS BMI calculator or in other terms a 44 inch waist down to 32 inches. His bloods are done every 3 months and his kidney function has remained stable throughout. That's our personal experience of course and as stated in the video people differ in their own biological responses.

I've just recently started looking into the ketogenic diet and I've watched many if not most of your videos (as well as some by others like Dr. Jason Fung) and when I mentioned my interest in this to some friends, one of them suggested I watch a video from a podcast called Maintenance Phase that voiced some serious concerns about the safety of this diet (though I'm not sure I'd classify the tone of the podcast as all that serious). After listening to it I felt that many of the concerns had already been addressed by some of your content and that of some of the others I've been watching, but this remarkably well-timed video addresses all of the concerns pretty much point for point. Thank you for putting my mind at ease on what is literally my first official day on this journey.

I had all my life difficulties with my kidney due to a shrunken kidney which got removed in 2011. My gallbladder was removed in 2014, I add ox bile to my supplements due to this. I started with Keto at September 28, 2019 cause I was diagnosed with a NAFL and after 2 month of deep research. I was a T2D since 1998 at that time too. I never encountered the Keto Flu not once cause I added electrolytes from the start. I found in the time up to December 6, 2019 that I ate lower and lower Keto approved veggies, berries, seeds and nuts and ate more protein and saturated fat. I incorporated intermittent fasting from the start. I became full blown Carnivore December 6, 2019. Before I started Keto/Carnivore my kidney function was at 45% now still on Carnivore my kidney function increased to a whopping 70%.
Well I heard if one has issues with the adrenal gland to supplement with adrenal since I don’t like the taste of organs like kidneys I supplement with beef adrenal capsules.
I reversed the NAFL and my T2D is in remission too, lost over 40+ kilogram, decreased my prescription drug intake from 10 daily to 1 which is a blood thinner due to a genetic defect in my red blood cells cell membrane my red blood cells are extra clingy and I can get thrombosis easily.

One way to avoid the "keto flu" is to do a gradually change over. I started by cutting out obvious sugar and high carb foods, eating the medium carb foods. During this time I researched to learn more about carbs and what foods were classed as low carb. As my medium carb foods were eaten I replaced them with lower carb alternatives where possible.

Thanks for your video packed with scientific evidence helping folks decide if keto is for them.
Bit of anecdotal evidence from me that may also interest folks: I’ve done intermittent fasting in conjunction with keto diet and it felt fantastic! I have bags of really stable energy, less hunger than when on any other diet I’ve ever undertaken, sustained weight loss (all fat as confirmed by body fat measurements) and it saved me a load of money! Nothing but great stuff to say about both keto and intermittent fasting! …And this before I get my cholesterol numbers, which I’m expecting to be fantastic - another benefit of keto and intermittent fasting!
I’d recommend buying and reading a book or two on keto (and optionally intermittent fasting too) and with your doctor determining what the risks versus benefits are for your given situation as Dr Maggs advises some folks may have risks (however low) that others don’t.

I was going to post this on a video you made about whether you know if you are in ketosis but then noticed it was a 2 year old video so this is a bit random but will post it here.
    Hi Dan,
just found this channel. The reason I'm looking around these sites is I am experimenting with fasting. I have never done a keto diet although I did do the Paleo way of eating for a year (with great results).
My plan was do a day and if OK maybe try three days. A dinner party was canceled on day 4 and I was feeling fine and I am now on day 7. I will break my fast tonight (but I could easily do longer) but I'm really not feeling hardly any negative effects. My primary interest was after finding out about autophagy although I had developed a big belly on my thin frame and moobs mainly due to a bad beer habit. My stomach is already back to a reasonable state
My main point is (and I don't know if I am lucky) but I am assuming that after 7 days without food I MUST be in ketosis however no bad breath (why is that?) and maybe the slightest of headaches and insomnia (although I think part of that is that my brain seems more active) -and all the positive effects.
I know this isn’t a site on fasting as such but I think I will certainly retry low carbing if not keto maybe from the off when I start eating.

Hi, firstly thanks for a great Chanel. It’s really good to be getting info from a British doctor, ( not that the other Channels are bad, I watch several) it just feels kind of familiar for want of a better word. I lost weight on keto a year ago then for no particular reason stopped and immediately gained weight back, I’m back on low carb and losing steadily. I watched a video by (talking with the docs), one of them is a cardiologist. A couple of the replies were from people saying basically what I just have. Their response was quite alarming, they agreed that keto was ok to kick start weight loss in the short term but was ultimately unsafe as it causes heart disease, heart failure and cancer. They recommended whole grains and a plant based diet as a much healthier option. I just wondered what your take was on this as it seems to be the total opposite of everything I’ve read about keto.

I have ;lived the past decades in my adoptive country of France on nutritionally dense foods, which are found in the mediterranean diet and include saturated fats... cream and of course butter, and meat, fish, olive oil salads and eggs....We do not stuff our faces with processed food and junk foods and we are not a fat nation and to all intents and purposes, semi Keto adepts, without realising it.
Covid isolation and a serious injury, resulting in severe pain and immobility to a degree that I couldn't even lift a saucepan to cook for myself, so sandwiches, tinned foods and processed foods were easier (especially when eaten in bed) led to a weight gain of over 40 kilos in eighteen months. Common sense told me that any extra weight would put strain on my already painful joints and taking over 30 minutes to get into a sitting position, reinforced what I already knew..
I am a retired dietician and was within a department in a large London hospital for eight years dealing with type 2 diabetes and overweight patients in the era of the food pyramid which recommended carbs be shoved down the throats of obese, pre diabetic and diabetic patients three times a day.... with snacks....No connection was made between insulin resistance and these maladies. God knows what the edocrinologists were doing to justify their existence !
There were no computers or internet in those days, no doctor Grundy, Dr. Fung, Dr. Berg,,or Dr. Maggs... You probably weren't born then, so we relied on books and cetain ones advocating low carb and the actual dangers of insulin resistance made sense ,and for the past thirty years I have maintained a healthy weight with a very, very low carb intake and by eating as instructed.
At 76 I felt like a thirty year old woman......until I fell off a horse, which led to the above weight gain, pain and immobility.
I then, via internet, found you and the other armchair doctors and intermittant fasting , leading to OMAD and I dropped from 100 kilos to 60 (i am 5'7'') in a few short months, without exercise or hunger, and i am now relieved, if not cured of the origin of the dreadful pain which had me living on 4,000 mg of Paracetomol and other pain relief, every day.
    Success story mmmmm? Not quite!
Whilst a low carb diet is in NO way dangerous, as the body will manufacture your needs for glucose (and you don't need much whether you are a couch potato or an athlete, providing your calorific intake is sufficient for your needs)
You Tube doctors are so good in offering advice on how we can start our keto, low carb regimes, and all the advice on how to succeed...but no-'one has yet told us in detail how to STOP.
I have gone back to three meals a day now.. but the warnings about sugar and lectins'' in plants and legumes or certain veggies belonging to the nightshade family, and contain toxins(veggies such as Peppers and aubergines and tomatoes and potatoes, which the french eat in a mediterranean diet and seem to come to no harm) Pesticides, lurking in just about every food imaginable, save for bio cruciferous green leafy ones and grass fed meat and dairy and eggs have so brainwashed me that I am still eating a Keto diet and still losing weight.
My BMI results show I have no body fat left to consume and I can see that my muscles, hitherto quite developed from riding and holding back a ton of horseflesh over the years on a daily basis are now my body's new source of nourishment and as shrunken as my belly, bottom and hips... Autophagy has taken on a whole new meaning...
I have come to realise I now have an eating disorder which has crept upon me so insideously that i never saw it coming......and at 76, slipping into a pair of jeans I last wore when I was seventeen doesn't please me as much as I thought it would.
I am wondering how many other folks are out there who are finding difficulty in losing this abject fear of food (like sugar laden fruit)which does not conform to the 'healthy' teachings of internet gurus and promise us Cancer and heart disease and dimentia if we even look at a tin of baked beans or a potato or a slice of bread or biscuit which is going to kill us if we dare to let one crumb pass our lips.
    Just saying ...............

I was diagnosed with a version of this (polygenic hypercholsteremia) which is a little more benign but I still had a cholesterol of 9mmol. I was sent for a coronary calcium test and scored zero, which is good but my specialist was adamant that I should go on a statin at quite a high dose. Since then I have started a a keto diet, have lost weight and become fitter and healthier as a result. Should I be worried?

My question is not over eating processed carbs but rather whether eating apples (2 a day) has benefits that outweighs cutting them out of my diet. The reading I’ve done into flavonoids would suggest there are excellent health benefits.
I’d welcome your thoughts on whether flavonoid intake outweighs cutting them out once one has got to the weight one wants to be at.

I have noticed some indigestion - however, prior to the diet I was on lansoprazole and as that reduces stomach acid, I stopped it because I found it seemed to make matters worse if anything, (since being on Keto). However, I only really notice anything when I have a very high fat meal. I have started taking some digestive enzymes.... Unsure if this will help or not!

For women like me,well over 60, keto is probably essential, preventing diabetes and safe for the heart. Sugar and starches are problematic as we grow older. Having said that I have worked in Italy and Russia where people consume pasta and kasha looking trim and fit. One concern with keto is the lack of fibers. I think aiding a green banana (resistant starch), bran cereal without flour or sugar and squash would be good additions. What about moderate alcoholic consumption, a little wine perhaps? i would love to see Dr Maggs’ data on the subjects. Thank you in advance

Very informative. One anti-keto argument not mentioned in the video: Isn't ketosis the body's "starvation mode"? Since the body processes carbs first, doesn't that indicate the body's preference for carb-based energy?

    • @markfinlay422
      @markfinlay422 Рік тому

The body has to process blood sugar (so carbs) first as they're damaging to the body. Look at the damage done with high blood sugar to diabetics who don't control it very well. Ketosis is just a natural way for the body to operate when it has access to meat, fish and leafy greens and that's hardly an unnatural diet. Never dipping into ketosis is the unnatural state that you see in modern diets and crap carbs.

I am slim but still have 20% body fat equivalent to 90,000 calories. Saturated fat is the preferred fuel that's why it is stored by the body. When no food is present to eat (common as we evolved), we have atleast a month's supply of saturated body fat.

I always considered it a bile buffer. By the way I listened to advise form doctor and surgeon so I don't have a gall bladder now. Love your vids Dr. Maggs. I did keto for 30 weeks and lost 13 pounds. Feeling good. BUT - my hubby was just diagnosed with bad vascular disease. Basically generalized blocked arteries. I was reading Dr. Esselstyn's book, and he says to stabilize and even reverse heart disease you should eat NO OILS AT ALL, and NOTHING WITH A FACE OR A MOTHER, and no dairy because it is clearly proven that animal protein destroys the epithelial cells - and he says whole grains are good - which I personally don't agree with. My husband is sick, and really depending on me to feed him the right foods and I am feeling super-anxious because the doctors I respect (you, Fung, Ornish, Esselstyn, Campbell) don't seem to agree. What on earth should we be doing? The hospital nutritionists know WAY less than I do about nutrition, so there's no point talking to them... I'm at a loss and, frankly, my hubby's life is on the line. Could you please speak to this issue? Is Esselstyn wrong? Thank you for any insights you can offer, Dr. Maggs.

I don't know much at all, but Dr. Berg talks about a liver cleanse diet before starting keto and that may help him. So its like high veg low protein. So get a bunch of organic veg and make like cabbage soup. I would think olive oil would be okay but you could skip it to be safe for a while or ask about it. It seems the solid fats are more of the problem. So no butter, cream, meat. Maybe he could do lean fish. He could get some veggie protein from lentils and beans. Maybe some quinoa. I would skip the processed carbs like breads. Good luck. I pray God heals him.

You shouldn’t go on a keto diet “cold turkey”. You hav eto give your body time to ramp up ketone production.
I gave myself 8 weeks to gradually lower carb intake so I never went through keto flu. The gradual transition was not without times I was hungry but I then learned I could eat non-carbs to get through those periods.
I’ve been on keto for 4 years now and down to one meal a day. Several day fasts are part of my monthly routine. I’ve done one 7 day fast and it was interesting how my body responded. I want to do it again soon.

I used have severe sleeping disorders. I now sleep better than ever since doing keto. I follow a nutritional keto diet. Lots of veggies (between 500-1000 gr), moderate to high moderate meat/fish, lots of fibres, water, electrolytes & some supplements & light to moderate exercise. I consume full milk, cheese, yoghurt, butter, nuts 100% chocolate, etc. Nothing prepacked, no additives, everything as fresh as possible or biologic & intermittent fasting every now and then. There is more to it, but that's the basis at it's core.
Inflammation markers are all down, no more high blood pressure, mental health drastically improved, cognitive abilities improved, eye sight improved (which was surprising) & so many more benefits. Weight loss was never my goal, but less suffering of my chronic illnesses & prediabetes. I'm now free of all medications, down 30 pounds & no more prediabetes. Keto also has it's challenges, definitely, but the good outweighs the bad by a long shot.
I've noticed that with many people that have a hard time following a keto/low carb diet I always want to figure out exactly what they eat and drink in a day. I have discovered with a keto diet that I was more allergic/intolerant to foods I never suspected I was allergic/intolerant to. Even when I had blood tests done. By eliminating or reducing those foods I noticed certain ailments went away, sometimes almost immediately.
      In short:
      1) what do you consume in a day/week following a low carb/keto diet (fresh/bio or fast food/prepackaged)?
      2) find out your own hidden food intolerance/allergies.
      3) visit your doctor for blood work for vitamine/electrolytes deficiencies every 3-6 for the first 1-2 years. You can add/omit supplements until you're balanced enough that you can do it on your own for a while. I'll always advise to visit your doctor at least every 6 months, but that depends on accessibility/health care in your country.
I believe that's were it might succeed or fail. I really would like an extensive scientific study on that. I can only dare to dream, I guess.

@@PD-vs7vf The description of your diet mgiht as well been written by myself! It's pretty similar. The only difference is I don't take supplements. There are tons of veggies on my diet so I guess they supply most of my needs. The other difference is that I've always been extremely healthy and lean. I have not visited a doctor in more that 35 years. In my book, at least in my country, the health system is a filthy business and doctors just see you as their source of income. I'm not doing the Keto diet for weight loss whatsoever..just health in mind. However that diet screw up my life-long perfect sleeping pattern and that makes me think there is something wrong with the keto diet. In some other videos, people commented about the same and some recommend talking a resistant starch in the evening. I'm trying that now, but no luck so far.

Cholesterol is so essential that you can't get enough by diet alone, so the body makes about 80%. Cholesterol is the precursor for vitamin D, testosterone, oestrogen, bile. The organ with most cholesterol is the brain - that's why a high fat diet cures epilepsy. Cholesterol is very poorly correlated with heart disease, but highly correlated with pharmaceutical profits and lies. The real cause of heart disease is smoking, alcohol, drugs (including prescribed), obesity, diabetes, lack of exercise and stress. Cholesterol lowerin drugs like Statins have side effects including causing diabetes - which causes heart attacks!

So a keto diet will help regulate out-of-control type 2 diabetes where you can't even get close to normal levels. Correct and a few eggs and maybe a hamburger or chicken leg for the protein and a salad. My dear friend I've been living on a pho Keto Atkins diet. For 3 years I regulate my blood sugar through Keto. So yes if you consistently have low blood sugar you should not be cutting out carbs. Considering that every time you put a bite of carb in your mouth by the time it hits your bloodstream it's a tablespoon of sugar. Keto also helps stops spikes in your blood sugar. Work shoots over 200 and destroys in your feet. Excellent for regulating blood sugar. But if you consistently down around eighty Five and Below blood sugar prior to eating you're in the first stages of type 2 diabetes. Your body is allowing blood sugar to drop too low. You're feeling to regulate your sugar you probably are seeing Lowe's of 80 and hides of 290 in the matter of 8:30 consuming those nasty carbs. Maybe blood sugar going up way over 400 a moment or two. Take those refined protein drinks that are full of glucose and sugar. With a good taste of salt. Beans meat are sources of are both sources of protein. The problem with the beans are you don't get in at the positive fatty acids, oils and iron that you need in your system. That's why you see these Marathon vegetarians having heart attacks from the inner walls of their hearts being too thin from the lack a very balanced balanced diet. Please zealots that don't comprehend that these fats help you retain water. The stuff that keeps your brain from not working. You know if the stuff that the lack of will cause you to have dementia and death. When you see someone suffering from heatstroke. I bet if you look into their diet red meat doesn't

Well my friend the point is that we're talking about two different carbohydrates. If you eat 10 grams of carbs and you have 4 grams of fiber. Your blood sugar will not Spike. Now eat them Kim grams of carbs and no fiber and watch what you sugar does. And are we talkin about hole fibers of white bleach wheat fiber which is nothing but a big spoonful of white sugar. Packing all carbs in Big Blob shows that you lack any understanding about what you're talkin about. Is simple carbs in this complicated carbs. A large amount of your blood sugar and it's function actually has to do with your digestive system. It all has to do with the regulation and control of the intake and processing glucose into your bloodstream. If you would bother to do your study you would find out that if you balance your carbs at a ratio of two carbs to one fiber. Your blood sugar will not go up but one or two points no matter how much you consume. But then you'd have to do something besides read somebody else's book. Don't listen to this man. I suffered a stroke three years ago due to hypertension and type 2 diabetes. I went on a keto / Atkins , very low carb high-fiber high-protein diet. I am able to regulate my blood sugar and my hypertension through this diet. If you're going to eat carbs just get yourself a big bag of white sugar and a spoon. They're both that hard on your body. This guy must be a product of the British medical system. A bureaucrat spouting bureaucracy.

There is no one "cholesterol." There are healthy and unhealthy forms. I suspect that we will find that for those few on a ketogenic diet who develop increased "cholesterol," what they have "too much" of is the healthy, fluffy kind of LDL cholesterol - not small dense LDL, which is the dangerous kind. We need to stop thinking that "too much" cholesterol is bad, based merely on a total cholesterol or even LDL reading. We need to look at the SUBTYPES of LDL to arrive at meaningful conclusions. What IS undeniably bad at this point is hyperinsulinemia - too much insulin in the blood stream from chronic excessive overconsumption of carbohydrates.
