The song is actually NOT about the drowning guy. That was a myth that Eminem cemented as if it were true. The song is a breakup song that he wrote after his divorce in 1980.
Well, those words were put in the mouth of Stan the deranged superfan in the song Stan, so I think it was just part of the joke that he would understand them way too superficially.
As per Phil’s own words, he himself explain the meaning behind the lyrics. He says he just opened his mouth and the lyrics poured out. Indeed, he said the song is overall about his divorce, but the lyrics are still kind of cryptic in parts. (As anyone who has gone through a divorce can tell ya, your mind goes to a lot of different places…some dark places…as you try to process what’s happening. Especially when it’s you that’s willing to try and make the marriage work, but your spouse isn’t willing. Some dark places, indeed.)

Truly an amazing performance by Brad Cole (keyboards, synthesizers, Vocoder), Daryl Stuermer (6 String Guitar), Leland Sklar (Bass Guitar), Chester Thompson ("Rhythm" Drums) and Phil himself (vocals, drums). It was performed in front of 20,000 + people at the "Palais Omnisport de Paris" and truly was, if not the greatest, close to the greatest live performance ever. It was from his "Finally... Incidentally, this track ("In the Air Tonight") was the 17th in the tracklist sandwiched between Separate Lives and Dance Into the Light. My wife and I saw Phil in Toronto, Canada in 2007, Phil and the other drummer, Chester, did a 15 min. drum battle. One of the greatest concerts we've been to.

Singing about an ex wife when they were breaking up, “ you can wipe off that grin, I know where you’ve been, it’s all been a pack of lies”. That voice to still be that good at his age and whilst playing those drums with every fibre of his being. Pure talent, singer song writer, composer, sublime drummer, piaonist ❤❤. This song has been my everything since I was a teenager. The passion & that drum solo TRANSCENDS. So glad you could experience what we’ve all had, growing up in the 80’s. Different times then. Better times then.
This was the song where everyone absolutely pounded out that drum beat in the car, driver included. You'd pull up to a red light and see the cars next to you doing the same, because they were listening to the same station. It was like it was required, like everyone singing Bohemian Rhapsody if it happened to come on the radio. Or air shredding Freebird during the solo. It became something like a religious rite; we all did it and we still do and pass it along to our kids, too.
Loved your reactions... Honestly, probably one of the best if not THE BEST YET. AND, you did it WITHOUT talking and without interrupting this iconic video and for that.... I THANK YOU IMMENSELY. This is how a reaction should be. You've got this 72 year-old subscribing🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
I love Phil Collins. This is one of my favorite songs. The build up and anticipation for that first drum beat. It saddens me that his health has deteriorated and he can no longer play the drums. This song will never be the same live without him playing the drums! 🥺😰
I was raised by a drummer daddy and he would play this with his headphones on and I would always know what he was playing always gave me chills but this live version is beyond awesome!!!
Phil Collins was originally the drummer (and later the lead singer) for Progressive Rock turned Pop Rock band Genesis, going back all the way to his debut in the band in 1971. I'd definitely suggest reacting to some Genesis, specifically the early 70s songs but there are some later songs that are worth listening to! Some Genesis classics: -Firth Of Fifth -The Musical Box -Supper's Ready -Land of Confusion -Dance On A Volcano -Dancing With The Moonlit Night -One For The Vine Also necessary to point out is that prior to 1976, lead vocals were performed by Peter Gabriel, who also became a big popular solo artist. He had songs like Sledgehammer, Big Time, and Solsbury Hill that are still legendary today!
The song is about a horrible divorce he was going through at the time he wrote it. Best live performance ever recorded. One of the top drummers of all time. A vocoder is used... and it's brilliantly synthesized.
Dang this one brings me back to my younger years. That drumming gives me goosebumps everytime. I love metal/ progressive rock, but I can appreciate Phil Collins and other genres as well. This song is about his divorce I believe. You all need to dive more into his solo work and his work with Genesis.
Phil Collins is HUGE! In the ‘80s he could easily fill any size stadium. He’s a massive talent & one of only a few (he may actually be the only person) to play Live Aid 1985 at both locations. He played in Philly & the flew to England to play drums for Led Zeppelin!!!
The full concert is brilliant, the is an emotive and iconic piece, the slow walk to the drums has been a thing since the 80s - it used to concern me that he would miss the break, but he never has
I have been to a number of Phil Collins concerts, Peter Gabriel and Genesis, as well as Stones, AC/DC, Rush. They are all amazing! This one, I remember so well, and it still gives me chills. His drum solo/duets with Chester Thompson are amazing, the highlight of his concerts.
Man .... you just listened to a LEGEND of Music worldwide ... that's how a true LEGEND enters the stage and the concert begins .... so calm, so confident, so focused ... but the song that he sings it's with such a STRONG tone and message.
The intro just pulls you in. It's the simplicity of each note/sound change that' so effective. Every single part of this music is so basic, but the whole is so much greater than the sum of it's parts. And then Phil's voice put together with that iconic drumming makes this song so special & unique. The video just sets it off nicely to show him on drums & vocals LIVE. Must have been some buzz to be there.
Seriously this was one of the best shows I've ever seen and I've seen so many. When this song starts the crowd always go nuts. I remember watching Miami Vice as a child and then riding in the lambo with the night sky and you can literally feel it. That moment. The best night of your life kinda moment and every time I play this song I always feel it. It's EPIC and ICONIC!
When I was in elementary school, my brother was obsessed with Phil Collins. I got oversaturated with his music to the point where I didn't want to listen to it for years. I'm back to enjoying it again.
The thing is, he hadn't fully left Genesis when this came out. His output, creatively, in the 80's to the 90's is astounding. Abacab (G) came out in 1981, Face Value (P) as well. Hello, I Must be Going (P) was '82, Genesis (G) 1983. No Jacket Required (P) 1985, Invisible Touch (G) 1986, But Seriously (P) 1989, and We Can't Dance (G) 1991. After that Genesis was pretty much done, except for 1997's Calling All Stations whereas Phil's continued on into the 2000's. And the thing is again, that album streak isn't anything to laugh at. There are no fillers. Those albums are filled with hit after hit, excellent track after excellent track. Even if you don't react to them, you should listen to those albums. I guarantee they'll blow your mind.
*When all of his work is combined (solo stuff, Genesis work, producer work, collaborative/duet stuff) Collins spent more time in the Top 40 in the US in 1980s than any other artist. With Genesis, he sold out four consecutive nights at the 80,000-capacity Wembley Stadium in July 1987 (which was a record at the time), while across 86/87 Genesis had five top 5 singles in the US charts from the Invisible Touch album, which is Beatles-eqsue. It's no exaggeration to say Genesis were the biggest band on the planet in 86/87.*
Such an iconic song even if ur just listening to it on the radio but seeing this live version is absolutely incredible so jealous of those people who were there brilliant reaction guys 😊😊😊
This version was intense! I got goose bumps. thanks guys! I was 14 in 82" when the 45 rpm arrived in Europe. And I confess - I never told anyone - that I pilfered the record in a store that sold clothes and records... So I'm going to hell because of Phill! ;)
Now about Phil Collins Voice it is totally unique I could point out that voice in a crowd cause NOBODY SOUNDS LIKE HIM!!! Love his Voice!! Love his music and he'll be one who will be always remembered long after he's gone. Thanks guys for the reaction...
True Story. At one of the stops on this international tour, the RISING Drum Set became stuck about 3 feet short of the Stage. And Phil had to jump down in the hole and perform his magic. In one his interviews, he described the incident.
Hello from France. 😊 I was there. It was at Paris Bercy in 2004. The dark was extraordinary. there had been a trio of drums, Phil Collins, his drummer and another who also played the djembe. It was phenomenal 😊
Hi guys! Enjoying your channel a lot. You guys truly enjoy the music, and appreciate the music for what it is. This is such an iconic performance from Mr. Collins. It’s so sad his health doesn’t allow him to make concert appearances any more, he was on my bucket list to see. Keep up the good work. Cheers & peace.
Seen Phil Collins solo and Genesis last year and even though he couldn't walk and his son done the drums, it was absolute perfection. One of the greats :)
Phil is such a laid back, cheeky guy, and he's still got it after all this time, his voice is just so powerful. I heard the song was about the break up of one of his wife's or partners as heard he's been married a few times. Do you remember his song called " Mama" ? It's a song about a creepy guy obsessed with a prostitute but calls her "mama" ( that's what I heard it's about) He sings it SO strongly and powerfully it's mind blowing, then there's the creepy laugh he does in it too. It's great to watch it with the original video so you get the full impact. ☺️❤️👏
I think it was mentioned somewhere that, that laugh or whatever you want to it, was inspired/ influenced by I think it was grand master flash or whatever the guy's name was
@@petebennett7764 Oh yeah Grand Master Flash " The Message" rap song , I love that song ,very dark but still cool. Thanks for letting me know. I wish they'd re- release it and have actor Samuel L Jackson miming to it in a video as for some reason every time I hear it I imagine someone like him telling the story. 😎
As others have said this is about his divorce. Another epic drum-based one with a similar sentiment is "I Don't Care Anymore"--there are live versions, but even the studio version is pretty epic.
Look into it further. He says in one video that it isn't about anything. He did write the song while going through his divorce. But that is about all it has to do with it. Phil said in 2016: "I wrote the lyrics spontaneously. I'm not quite sure what the song is about, but there's a lot of anger, a lot of despair and a lot of frustration."
@@joejacobsen6822 Agreed---not literally "about his divorce", but rather written while going THROUGH his divorce. So it is borne out of emotions he felt during his divorce--I think his pain resonates in most of his Face Value album, if you've ever listened to it all. I think any one of us who have gone through similar pain can find the music in this and even still on his second solo album (Hello, I Must Be Going) resonates with feeling that pain.
I will be telling around about my age, 🤪 but I was blessed to be able to see the original group Genesis at Winterland in San Francisco. To me, Phil Collins has always been a focal point in his music and a good songwriter from the very jump along with being a high-tech kind of a guy, it’s so sad to see that he has to endure an illness that took him away from something that he loved so much his music. Hopefully he can still be able to write and continue to make song. Enjoy your reactions you take care and be safe.🤠

I actually got to see him perform this song live just before the pandemic started. He was getting older so his son was on the drums and it was still awesome. I have it up on Facebook.
Nothing to do with a drowning, it's an emotional allegory about the breakup of his marriage. This is in my top 3 of all time fave live performances, what I wouldn't give to have been there in the audience! You can find that whole concert on youtube, it was pure magic. I love how the audience starts to lose it when he's almost to the drums, knowing what's about to come!

Not sure you check comments this far out, but i do hope you checked your Phil Collins history. Check awards, #1s, chart history and his history. He was a drummer from age 5, I believe. He was the first drummer to also be a lead singer. When Peter Gabriel left Genesis (he's another amazing talent), they tried out several lead singers. Finally, his band mates, who knew he could also sing, convinced him to take lead vocals. This is not just iconic, but amazingly difficult to sing while playing a full drum kit. He plays several instruments, writes all his own music, has won grammys, emmys and even an oscar.
Honestly on Tommy Lee, he isn't bigger than the band talent wise. The only reason you probably put him up there is because of his home porno movie with Pam Anderson. Or his drum antics in concert. You honestly could replace him imo. No way you replace any of the other three. Honestly, can you put him in the category of Danny Carey, Mike Portnoy, Joey Jordison, Neil Pert, etc? No, he's a character filling his role in an above average stage imo, and I'm a huge Crue fan. With this one, the buildup to the drum solo is what makes it legendary.
Phil KNEW this was the moment he had been waiting for all his life. HE KNEW he might never be able to do this again. and he can’t now. One of the greatest ever live performances.
The twinsthenewtrend reaction to this is a classic. They freaked on the drums. Got a video chat from Obama out of their freak out. It was cool. It was extra adorable.
I had to unsubscribe from those guys because it was getting too dumb for me. When it was just the one guy, I enjoyed the content because it was just his thoughts and he was able to convey them a lot easier. When his brother got back on the channel, they spent most of the time just joking around when reacting.
@@TheBlackQueen I totally understand. They never really provide a true reaction or give relevant feedback. They freak out and end the video once the songs end. Not sure why they blew up. Glad they’re able to make a living but not worth the hype! Just my opinion! 🤷🏾♀️

Facts I was born in the 80's so many good memories like when this song came out
Loved your reactions...
This 76 year old agrees!!!
I love Phil Collins. This is one of my favorite songs. The build up and anticipation for that first drum beat.
It saddens me that his health has deteriorated and he can no longer play the drums. This song will never be the same live without him playing the drums! 🥺😰
His son Nick plays with Genesis now.
He is great !! Had a wonderful teacher …..🥁
Some Genesis classics:
-Firth Of Fifth
-The Musical Box
-Supper's Ready
-Land of Confusion
-Dance On A Volcano
-Dancing With The Moonlit Night
-One For The Vine
Also necessary to point out is that prior to 1976, lead vocals were performed by Peter Gabriel, who also became a big popular solo artist. He had songs like Sledgehammer, Big Time, and Solsbury Hill that are still legendary today!
Yes, I typed most of this before you guys already touched up on your knowledge of Genesis, but I'll keep it up regardless.
Watcher of the skies live is amazing
Watcher of the skies!!!! Unbelievable song. Peter Gabriel is a beast!!! Dance on a volcano is one of my favorite songs
@@manhattanmike6959 I have a special place in my heart for Games Without Frontiers 😊
‘Land of Confusion’ is one that you MUST watch the video!
I always revisit the best years of Miami Vice when I hear this. This live version seems a bit embellished, tho.
Collins is the quintessential prog rock drummer. Not that this is prog.
This performance is flawless.
who's the only person who can hold the attention of thousands of people only by the use of his voice. until the iconic drum drop that is
At that moment in time Phil Collins was the coolest man on planet Earth.
Phil Collins is HUGE! In the ‘80s he could easily fill any size stadium. He’s a massive talent & one of only a few (he may actually be the only person) to play Live Aid 1985 at both locations. He played in Philly & the flew to England to play drums for Led Zeppelin!!!
Other way, Live Aid in London, then Concorde to the States to play there.
Never seen a live Phil Collins video.....it was amazing! Definitely interested in seeing more. Thanks for the nostalgia guys! ❤🤘
The introduction on an overlay of all the instruments, just builds up the anticipation, he still gives me chills❤
This man is a beast there isn’t anything he can do , plays, sings he’s a genius absolute genius ❤
Saw Genesis when I was in high school. I'm retired now and my love for Phil has not changed, he is the GOAT!!
Love Phil Collins. He's so awesome!!! I could watch him sing this song over and over! Best performance ever!❤
Phil is one of the biggest hit making machines of all time. Hundreds of millions of albums.
You guys giving me goosebumps by totally enjoying this masterpiece from Phil..big respect.
I feel it in my soul ever time
Phil Collins absolutely *killed* it here.
Spot on! Thanx!
When I was in elementary school, my brother was obsessed with Phil Collins. I got oversaturated with his music to the point where I didn't want to listen to it for years. I'm back to enjoying it again.
Man you guys are awesome, you let the whole song play out which allows the listener to enjoy the whole event without interruption. Way to go! New Sub.
God what a voice you can’t teach that talent is 100% God given period.
Phil Collins pure genius , legend .
Awesome, absolute Epic Performance from Phil Collins..
And it's so sad to see him now.
Its such a powerful performance...with the build up.....its unbelievable !!! Such an amazing artist!!! Gets me every time & I'm 55 yrs old! lol.
I don't think there's another song that drops the beat so late into a song. Genius!
Love how y’all were clapping at the end like you were in the crowd. That live performance was mind blowing
I had the privilege to see him live in Sydney Australia, absolutely obe of the best shows
Such an iconic song even if ur just listening to it on the radio but seeing this live version is absolutely incredible so jealous of those people who were there brilliant reaction guys 😊😊😊
To put it simply, ‘It’s the power of music’ because its feeling and truth no matter if you are human or beast 💖
this really takes you for a ride....
imagine being there.
Phil is such a laid back, cheeky guy, and he's still got it after all this time, his voice is just so powerful. I heard the song was about the break up of one of his wife's or partners as heard he's been married a few times.
Do you remember his song called " Mama" ? It's a song about a creepy guy obsessed with a prostitute but calls her "mama" ( that's what I heard it's about)
He sings it SO strongly and powerfully it's mind blowing, then there's the creepy laugh he does in it too.
This was a live concert in France for over 20,000 people. Phil was 53 at the time.
Listen to the drums in I don't care anymore song and then go listen to in the air tonight. I think there's a close resemblance between the two
I will be telling around about my age, 🤪 but I was blessed to be able to see the original group Genesis at Winterland in San Francisco.
This is off the live DVD 'Phil Collins .. Finally ... The First Farewell Tour Paris 2004'. I have it and the complete double DVD is so full of great live music from Phil Collins. It is one of the best live DVD's I have ever seen. It is available on UA-cam.
He has a perfect voice live. His pitch is perfect. It's crazy and very rare.
I actually got to see him perform this song live just before the pandemic started. He was getting older so his son was on the drums and it was still awesome. I have it up on Facebook.
Thank you for not pausing the vid during one of the most epic drum solo’s ever. 👍
This NEVER EVER gets old..class. ☮️🇬🇧
The Eagles “Hotel California” I would say top 10 must famous songs all time is another must listen to that the drummer sings. PLEASE check it out.
O agree and it has to be The Live version at THe Capitol Centre:)
Phil Collins is the master of all. Nobody compare.
Phil is started out at 19 in 1970 as the drummer for Genesis, becoming the lead singer in 1976. He started his solo career in 1981 with this song. While still with Genesis until the mid nineties. This whole show is on UA-cam. Phil is iconic, his live performances are perfection. Genesis shows are fantastic. My favorite live performances of theirs is - Home by the Sea/Second Home by the Sea - ua-cam.com/video/MOb9Ubu8f3U/v-deo.html
I see it the first time live bro's and i cant tell you how i feel right now ! Greatings from germany ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
This is actually a sister song to a track called "i dont care anymore" its not about someone who drowned. He wrote these during his divorce
I never get tired of hearing this song. it's iconic. stands the test of time. yall need to hear the euro version of this song
I so appreciate your joy watching this magical moment in music history!!! He wrote this song about the guy he caught cheating with his wife!!! Never piss this guy off or the world will know about it!!!🎵🎼🎶🥁🎸🎹🎧🎙🎤🤘🤘🤘🤘 This is the kind of moment that lands you in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame!!!💜💜💜🤘🤘🤘
Nice review. The drums the drums man that drum role is iconic for sure.
One of the most famous drum drops ever.. the intensity! I saw them last November, the Last domino tour… it’s so sad Phil is not aging well
That part makes really sad. The pic of him on tour recently sitting it out and his son playing the drums. I’m sure he’s good but it’s not the same without Phil. God bless him! ♥️❤️🩹
@@ms.one-town901 and there he sat singing… Selling England by the pound… still have shivers. His nerve damage is so bad he can only hold a tambourine
I’ve seen him live a few times starting in the early 80s, and his shows are always incredible.
People sometimes forget how good a drummer Phil Collins is, listen to Nuclear Burn by Brand X, Collins playing on that track is unbelievable.
Music is an emotion that you can feel…..when it’s good and righteous! There are some people who know how to hit the spot…..it’s a spiritual experience when it makes your body react in such a way it feels so so good!
Phil Collins wasn't the best concert I've ever seen, but when they did this song it was one of the top 3 concert "moments" I've EVER seen in my life.
Same. I have seen a lot of shows. 12 with Phil. And the staging in this tour was the best
