First time I saw this, I thought about that video of the "Drummer overqualified for the gig.` 😏No, seriously, he slayed it, though if @samlawrence4670 is correct about that story, it didn't seem to bother the rest of the band any. Go for it Terry!
Yep. When it comes to purely instrumental compositions, Joe Satriani is my fave, but I admire a lot of guitarists out there, and Knopfler for me will always be "Mark The Long Thumb"😄 This song is an evergreen; as I'm from Poland I know kids from polish music schools, for whom it was a point of honor, learning to play "Sultans Of Swing" or "Brothers In Arms".
Mark Knopfler is one of the greatest storytellers in rock music history… His relaxed natural vocal are one of a kind. And he fucking kills the guitar, as well… All together, it is perfection.
All while looking like he just came back from a run after his first job interview in the 80's. I unironically love his unusual fashion sense and casual nature. And his talent of course. Grew up with Dire Straits, thanks to my dad.
Dire Straits and Van Halen released their debut albums in the same year. Mark Knopfler and Eddie Van Halen both had a massive impact on how the electric guitar would be played from that point onwards.
Been touted as the greatest live rock performance ..... ever. These are all consummate musicians. Not just a bunch of guys banging away. They complement each other exquisitely.
The drummer's mother was in the audience. He knew this & was having a good time, one might state. This performance is fantastic. Their creative musical ways certainly shines through during live ones. Thanks guys!
The guitar is the singer, Knopfler telling a story ....I love how Terry the drummer is really highlighted, as much as the lead guitar... Not just back in the dark, tucked away... Timeless, as close to musical perfection as you can get.... Love the Straits!... Mark is the GOAT 🎸🎸.
Sometimes I feel older these days but damn, I'm so lucky that I was able to see these guys many times in my 20s and 30s. Their live shows were always fucking amazing!
If I want to lie in the dark and cry, I play all the Dire Straits songs on loop. It’s as if all these guitar riffs, hoarse voices and... just amazing melodies are communicating directly with my heart. 💔
You know that Mark Knopfler is also a film soundtrack composer, right? His soundtracks include the Princess Bride. He was awarded a lifetime achievement award in Scotland in 2018, the same year Dire Straits was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Look at the way they are looking at each other and smiling it's almost as if they can,t believe how in the zone and on fire they are everything came together that night and they just knew they were going to give the audience something they won,t forget. Pure perfection
Prince was once asked "What does it feel like being the Greatest guitarist in history?" his answer and I quote "I don't know ask Mark Knopfler" just about to watch him.
You guys need to do a deeper dive into Dire Straits, theres so much more.. So Far Away.. -Lady Writer.. -Your Latest Trick.. -Brothers in Arms..-Once Upon A Time In The West..-Telegraph Road.. You cant go wrong with these....
Recorded in London, at the Hammersmith Odeon. Proof too that pre autotune that bands live sounded as they did on the studio version, but with a performance thrown in. Of course the Queen Live Aid set you did shows it too. A time when music was magic. So Telegraph road from the same Alchemy show is a must see. Hoping you and yours are and remain well. Have yourselves a fine week.
Indeed they did. I'm old enough to have been sat there watching the whole thing on TV. My one chance to see any form of gig with many of those artistes. Be well, and thanks for replying.@@PjRjHj
I gotta go with The Tribe and agree that y'all need to do Telegraph Road from this same show! Or Romeo and Juliet! You just can't go wrong with anything from Dire Straits! 🤘🏼💙
The concert was in 1983 in London. The fashion was very 80s, including the unstructured jackets with the sleeves pushed up and the sweatbands. Dire Straits was a British band, but the rhythm guitarist was American. The lead guitarist, Mark Knopfler, is still working at the age of 74 and released a new album in April 2024.
Glad you watched this. I was 16 years old, in high school when I heard this for the first time. I never heard of the Dire Straits before that. A friend gave me his Walkman and said that I must hear this. It blew my mind! I bought the double cassette and wouldn’t stop listening to the concert. Then, with the little money I had, I bought their other cassettes. Then Brothers in Arms came out and the Dire Straits came to Israel for three concerts in 1985. I couldn’t go 😢. I have all of their recordings and all of Mark Knopflers solo recordings. 34 years later, I fulfilled my dream and saw Mark live in Budapest in 2019 and sat with my wife in the first row😀
One of the very greatest guitarist of all time and criminally underrated by music journalists. The usual lists are often topped by people that play relentlessly hard, fast and loud, but jamming so many notes together it sometimes sounds more like a technical exercise than a song. Knopflers playing is deceptively technical with a control of tempo and volume that is second to none and every note feels so deliberate. It's like between his lyrics the guitar also has a voice and something it wants to say. Telegraph Road and Brothers in Arms are a couple other famous examples of his great "duets" with his guitars.
Billy Joel started, sometime in the 2000s, not selling tickets to the front rows of his concerts, because they were usually bought by scalpers and sold to rich people or companies, and those folks were there to be seen, not for the music. Once the concert was about to begin, his people would then go out to the cheap seats and find music lovers to be invited up to the front row for the concert.
I was there. I was somewhere ourt in that crowd. And I'm a singer and guitarist. Mark tore the fucking place down for the entirety of that concert. Terry, what can I say? He was locked in to the "pocket" of every cut. These videos where you see him singing along with every solo to feel it, to ride the wave of the song and pass that along to the rest of the band... That's the kind of drummer you want behind you when you're standing up front and just giving it.
The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising. It's nice that you enjoyed it so much.🤗 What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having. Making your living like that wouldn't suck. Shout out to the production crew. The filmography of this LIVE concert is incredible.🤩
This live version was the exact length of my drive home from work in the summer. Sunroof open, pull out of work and speed home jammin to this epic live song, it would finish right as I was pulling in my driveway. 🎉
My parents had most of this concert on cassette tape. It was the soundtrack to every long car journey I had as a child (with a bit of Fleetwood Mac, Kate Moss etc. mixed in). Even before I could talk this music was ingrained into me, the guitar solos still evoke memories of driving through the Scottish Highlands, and I couldn't be more grateful for that. Funny thing is, I'm 34 and the studio versions of most of these songs still sound off to me, even now. It's awesome to see people react with such joy and enthusiasm to something I've loved my entire life. Thank you, gentlemen!
This is one of my at the top of the list all time fav songs ever!! I love Dire Straits and this performance is just top notch! I would have loved to be there! Thanks for another great reaction video!!
Saw them perform this live in Sydney in the mid eighties. Easily the best concert I have (or will) ever experience. Now almost 40 years later, they are still my favorite band.
You were so right with your comment I loved it, in the zone, the crowd too, etc.. They didn't know what they were thinking.... I think they felt it even if their head didn't tell them yet. Awesome right on reaction. Love it!
You guys just made my birthday week! Okay , the difference, as I am sure you already figured out is the 4 minute guitar solo and a drummer who is having the time of his life, and really the whole band is having fun. Think of Mark's voice as your grandpa telling you a story. 😂 oh and I haven't played my flute since college; no video.
Remember YOUR MIKE IS ON, so LOUD, especially with excitement over trivial items for the most part AND LOSING OUT ON THE NUANCE of the SONG!!!! TURN YOUR MIKE DOWN!!! Enjoy it, and talk about it afterwards-WOW
Fantastic reaction to this absolutely mind blowing performance guys!! Thank you!! Telegraph Road from the same concert is equally brilliant!! Best wishes from the UK!
As great as ALL the band members are on this song........ That DRUMMER is killing it..... period. What a performance. This is by far my favorite version of this song. Some bands are goo live performers but these fellas... are ON FIRE. Great reactions as always. Take care...
You should also do "Telegraph Road" from same concert I think. I agree with you this live version of Sultans is better than the original. DS are one of my favourite bands & MK is my favourite guitarist who is instantly recognisable with a unique sound all of his own. I saw them a few times in the '80's.
You're so right about moments when you can tell the band is in the zone. They make magical moments. Those times when the live version trumps the original one. Another one like that that comes to mind is Jamiroquai - Main Vein - Live in Verona. These guys are so damn funky and in the zone! You guys might want to give them a whirl.
Awesome reaction my dudes. Big hug from Sweden. This music means alot to me im born 1981 and my old papa used to put my legs on his feet at just 5 years old and made me learn the rythm in this music. I Swear this music made me appreciate dancing and rock in general. I will forever cherish this memory thanks to Dire Straits music. My old father is gone 7 years past now but memory remains.
I was at this concert with my brother who had passed away 3 years ago one of the greatest times memories of our lives the were all in the pocket from guitarist total jamming so hard in the flow to the drummer going bonanza crazy good and the keyboardist the were all so fn amazing they got us all in the flow I was clapping along in the groove loving my bro and I were losing our minds going crazy saying what a jam of a lifetime will never forget it.and the played all there other great amazing songs but this one blew my doors off my mind was exploding I was going crazy dancing in the groove I loved seeing you guys enjoy it like we did imagine being there still gives me goose bumps every time I watch this.
Take each individual performance on stage alone was amazing. Then try and do it all together, and not miss a single timing. That shows a group that just clicks. You can see Mark acting as the conductor with nods and looks throughout. That is the most impressive part of this performance for me.
Great review! One of my favorite bands and yes, this version is the best. Just watching the guitar solo, the drummer and then the rest of the band being able to make it all come together so smoothly.
The valzer that introduces tunnel of love, in this concert, is one of the greatest things in music history.

Lucky enough to have experienced Dire Straits in April 1979 at Center Stage in Canton Michigan. A small intimate venue that'd hold around 1000 people with best acoustics I've ever heard.
My gramps born in 1904 lived to be 94. He always talked of travel in space and visiting the moon. He was a farmer in NW Iowa. He said he'd see the moon in the dark of early morning and right after sunset and he followed space travel always. My dad was a photographer for NASA and would mail him photos. Gramps passed in his sleep and he's seeing it all. He told me once that he thought the afterlife was traveling thru space and seeing all kinds of breath taking stuff. I miss this wise and gentle man ❤.
It was a pleasure to watch the Rappers get swept away by that "lullaby", when Mark sang on his guitar during the last quiet segment. I saw the "studio" version during their fist Canadian tour. I kept thinking "Let Her RIP"! This performance did just that. It's great to watch Mark direct the choreography and tempo changes, just with a look or a nod. He never had to "reel" another member back in. Total control of the moment!😃
Great reaction! Thanks! This was their first live tour in 1978 and they were only contracted in 1977. Mark Knopfler is my one of my top favourite songwriters. This really happened when he walked into a pub to shelter for the rain (same goes for Money for Nothing. Check that story and remember the time period back then with the real MTV). IMO Knopfler is the very best guitarist ever for many reasons. And this performance is one of the (In my oppinion) three greatest all time (Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb @Pulse 1994 live,. The live version of Rolling Stones - Sympathy for the Devil from the "get yer ya ya's out" album - 3 minutes insane solo by Keith Richards and Mick Taylor. And this one). I don't know about the audience . May be some vips in front and plebs in the back? 😁 , but Terry Williams (drums) had his dad for the first time there at a live show. So, he wanted to impress him, and well, he did. He started uptempo (compaired to the studio version, which is good indeed, but this performance was insane) and Mark Knopfler has no difficulty at all by picking up some extra tempo, improvising 70% of the solos, using his strat as a Banjo, Timing is SPOT ON, Not a single miss on a clear strat, and even then it just looks like he is doing his groceries on an Saturday with all the time in the world. Terry is a freacking monster there at the drums, absolutely killing it. But Mark Knopfler is just scary.... It didn't even looked like he needed to put in some effort. I think he only showed 50% of his capabilities there.... EPIC Performance 🙂
I love in older videos when the drummers are moving faster than the cameras could keep up, makes them look even more ridiculously fast, ludicrous speed.
The drummer's name is Terry Williams and this performance is exceptional.
The story goes that Terry’s dad was in the audience for the first time and he was a little excited about it.
First time I saw this, I thought about that video of the "Drummer overqualified for the gig.` 😏No, seriously, he slayed it, though if
@samlawrence4670 is correct about that story, it didn't seem to bother the rest of the band any. Go for it Terry!
Wow amazing, that drummer is an animal but i love it ..can't beat dire straits ❤
His **** dealer also had a great night!@@samlawrence4670
His **** dealer also had a great night!@@samlawrence4670
Mark Knopfler is a guitarist’s guitarist. Brilliant finger picking style that is his own.
Yep. When it comes to purely instrumental compositions, Joe Satriani is my fave, but I admire a lot of guitarists out there, and Knopfler for me will always be "Mark The Long Thumb"😄
This song is an evergreen; as I'm from Poland I know kids from polish music schools, for whom it was a point of honor, learning to play "Sultans Of Swing" or "Brothers In Arms".
I got into him when I was learning guitar. Inspired me to become a DJ bc I had nothing for that
It reminds me of Roy Clark. I would bet that Clark is an inspiration to Knopfler's style.
Lindsey Buckingham had the same sort of style..... both amazing.
Inspired by the three finger style picking invented by Lester Flatt.
One of the greatest performances of any song, by any band, EVER. I honestly can’t listen to the studio version anymore. THIS is Sultans of Swing.
and the studio version isn’t bad at all, it’s just that this is one of the greatest songs ever made
Forreal this is the only version I can listen to, it’s glorious
I completely agree! It is the best live version of any song! I have watched it hundreds of times!
Yup. What a performance. He has a bigger nose than Dave Gilmore.
#truth
One of THE top live performances ever! It is magic ✨
Telegraph Road is another one of his stories. Excellent music.
Not only does this music sound sacred, but to us, it was. We took it for granted that our musicians were there to lift us to the heights.
Dire Straits and Van Halen released their debut albums in the same year. Mark Knopfler and Eddie Van Halen both had a massive impact on how the electric guitar would be played from that point onwards.
Dire Straits are brilliant live! Some of my favourites are 'Telegraph Road', 'Tunnel of Love' and the amazing 'Brothers in Arms', fabulous!
Been touted as the greatest live rock performance ..... ever. These are all consummate musicians. Not just a bunch of guys banging away. They complement each other exquisitely.
Couldn't say it better. Exquisite.
Knopfler is a music god! Do you realise how hard the main guitar solo is to play?
❤❤❤
TELEGRAPH ROAD from the same concert is equally if not MORE EPIC!❤
Agreed. I mentioned I ned it my comment. So dope
The drummer's mother was in the audience. He knew this & was having a good time, one might state. This performance is fantastic. Their creative musical ways certainly shines through during live ones. Thanks guys!
By now I always read, that it was his father, who visited a live performance of his son (drummer Terry Williams) for the first time.
@Nitramrec Unfortunately it's an urban myth
@@andrewtims9524 Exactly, these myths spread like wildfire. he is just an amazing drummer.
I heard it was his high school girl friend. She had dumped him and he wanted to show her he had risen above it.
@ugadawgs1990 how old is he ? Plus he is Welsh so no high school
I think most people prefer the live version. You feel the energy and you see how they are all loving it. And yes the performance was in the UK.
I had this version since about 1985. I have honestly NEVER chosen to listen to the studio version since.
Once you here this version there is no going back, it’s so damn good man
Though the studio version is very well recorded, with an impact and presence and clarity 20:07 rarely found in rock.
Same
I heard this version before the studio one. The studio one is , for me, absolutely disappointing.
I absolutely love Sultans of Swing, but this version is my very favorite of this classic song! A killer performance by Dire Straits!
If I want to lie in the dark and cry, I play all the Dire Straits songs on loop. It’s as if all these guitar riffs, hoarse voices and... just amazing melodies are communicating directly with my heart. 💔
Terry Williams(drummer) is killing it as it was the first time his dad went to see him live!
You know that Mark Knopfler is also a film soundtrack composer, right? His soundtracks include the Princess Bride. He was awarded a lifetime achievement award in Scotland in 2018, the same year Dire Straits was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Yes, he also wrote the beautiful soundtrack to Scottish film Local Hero, starring some great Scottish actors and Burt Lancaster.
Look at the way they are looking at each other and smiling it's almost as if they can,t believe how in the zone and on fire they are everything came together that night and they just knew they were going to give the audience something they won,t forget. Pure perfection
One of the best live performances
Prince was once asked "What does it feel like being the Greatest guitarist in history?" his answer and I quote "I don't know ask Mark Knopfler" just about to watch him.
That one was Prince...
Are you sure it wasn't John McEnroe, I didn't know he could play guitar that good, I thought he was an amateur 😂
No it wasn't it was Jimi Hendrix, and he said I don't know ask, depending on the story it's either Eric Clapton or Rory Gallagher.
Best living guitarist❤️❤️
I think what makes Mark Knopfler so special is regardless he's a fantastic and genius guitarist, his music is balanced.
The drum kit, left the stage, and lit a cigarette after that song! 😂❤
Hilarious quote. Hahaha
You guys need to do a deeper dive into Dire Straits, theres so much more.. So Far Away.. -Lady Writer.. -Your Latest Trick.. -Brothers in Arms..-Once Upon A Time In The West..-Telegraph Road.. You cant go wrong with these....
Yes please. Brothers, telegraph and once upon are fire.
So Far Away is a beautiful song👍
Recorded in London, at the Hammersmith Odeon. Proof too that pre autotune that bands live sounded as they did on the studio version, but with a performance thrown in. Dire Straits performed immediately before Queen at Live Aid. They brought their A game, and Queen responded accordingly
Would highly recommend "Telegraph Road" from the same show!
Best drumming performance ever 🎉

One of the Band ever! Now you have to see "telegraph road" the same Concert and "tunnel of love" live Wembley 85
My man operates that guitar like a weapon. Absolutely iconic performance
Im glad you two are doing my favorite Dire Straits song again. Awesome reaction🤘🏼
One of the very greatest guitarist of all time and criminally underrated by music journalists. In the car i so often listen to Sultans of Swing and Calling Elvis both of them live, and a movie automatically plays along in my head.
I saw them live like this in Houston, Texas in 1985. Most amazing concert I've EVER seen. EVER.
You need to go to more concerts
@sobrevalorado you may have bad taste in music
I was there. I was somewhere ourt in that crowd. And I'm a singer and guitarist. Mark tore the fucking place down for the entirety of that concert. Terry, what can I say? YOU are RIGHT!!!! This Performance DOES.....transcend TIME!!! OMG..GREAT REACTION.

One of the finest live performances any era any genre ever recorded. The drummer is going crazy.
Telegraph road from this same show is amazing
This is 1 of those songs that I remember from when I was a kid in the late 70’s-early 80’s at the Roller Skating rink…this was a big 1
Saw them perform this live in Sydney in the mid eighties. Easily the best concert I have (or will) ever experience. Now almost 40 years later, they are still my favorite band.
Loved your reactions this really is One of the Best Live performances of All time !
You were so right with your comment I loved it, in the zone, the crowd too, etc.. They didn't know what they were thinking.... I think they felt it even if their head didn't tell them yet. Awesome right on reaction. Love it!
Romeo and Juliet or Telegraph Road. Both great long tracks.
You guys just made my birthday week! Okay , the difference, as I am sure you already figured out is the 4 minute guitar solo and a drummer who is having the time of his life, and really the whole band is having fun. This song has that “feel” from start to finish. One of the few perfect songs.
The energy is almost explosive coming through in the video, so I can't even imagine what it would have been like live. Wow. just Wow! Great reaction!
The whole ALCHEMY LIVE concert is totally The Bomb.
You should also do "Telegraph Road" from same concert I think. I agree with you this live version of Sultans is better than the original. DS are one of my favourite bands & MK is my favourite guitarist who is instantly recognisable with a unique sound all of his own. I saw them a few times in the '80's.
I bought my first guitar the day after I saw Dire Straits play live in 1985.
Morning fellas! This is great live! The last part Is beautiful! You guys were rocking out! 🙂 Good choice! 👍💯🤓
Glad to see you do this version. It’s the same song but on steroids. Telegraph Road from the same concert is an epic. Also well worth a view.
You're so right about moments when you can tell the band is in the zone. They make magical moments. Those times when the live version trumps the original one. MK is in the legend category, when has regularly had Eric Clapton backing him it gives you a clue as to how good he is.the boy can play.
Nice reaction blokes.
Great stuff.. drummer was killing it.. especially the last 2 minutes 😊😊
Live is always better...Thanx for this TT's U guys are aqwesome
Now you must do Telegraph Road live from the same Alchemy Live shoe... May be even better!
Telegraph Road from the same tour is also epic.
I worked these shows as security (Seemore Security) in London and they were brilliant concerts.
Brividi e pelle d'oca canzone intramontabile Dire Straits fantastici........
KILLER PERFORMANCE!!!🎶🎼🎵🎸🎤🎧🥁🎹🔥🤘 Love the keyboardist rockin out the whole time!!!

Their live version of Money for Nothing on the live Aids from 1985 is a must see. Sting sings along with them. Great job guys for all your reactions.
One of the best live performances ever! Terry Williams kills it!
Music today does not touch this!

Mark is a genius songwriter/performer/storyteller and one of the UK's finest ever musical exports.
This is from their live album Alchemy. I love Dire Straits, but they are definitely at their best live. So good.❤
It was a pleasure to watch the Rappers get swept away by that "lullaby", when Mark sang on his guitar during the last quiet segment. I saw the "studio" version during their fist Canadian tour. I kept thinking "Let Her RIP"! This performance did just that. It's great to watch Mark direct the choreography and tempo changes, just with a look or a nod. He never had to "reel" another member back in. Total control of the moment!😃
Nice one boys - loved your faces all the way through this.
One of the best reactions on the internet right here!
Now you need to check out Telegraph Road from the same Alchemy Live gig..it’s an absolute masterpiece
REAL musicians!!
I love in older videos when the drummers are moving faster than the cameras could keep up, makes them look even more ridiculously fast, ludicrous speed.
There's something about this performance that makes you feel as if you're there
Awesome reaction guys check out telegraph road and tunnel of love from this concert
PLEASE react to "Telegraph Road" from that same concert! It's one of the best live performances of any song ever, period.
Try Telegraph Road from the same Alchemy Live concert. Dire Straits were in the zone that night!!
The Bug is a personal favorite of mine. I head it when I was 6 years old and I feel like everyone can relate.
‘Telegraph Road’ from the same concert, please ❤🇬🇧
Best live performance i've ever seen!
