Anybody else appreciate growing up in the ‘80’s more as you grow older?
The 80s were amazing. The 50s would have been amazing as well, but for the innocence of the nation with some pretty decent music, as well.
I know the 1970s were something for another generation I wasn't in. But being born in 1971, the 80s sure were the best: good music, good movies/series (Back to the Future, Top Gun, Miami Vice and so many others).
Always looking back at this time - 2020s are a sore!
Yassssss. Phil is a drummer 🎉
Hell, I grew up in the 60s and 70s. I was about fifty feet back from the stage at Woodstock. I wouldn't trade that for anything.
Oh HELLO YES!
As Phil once said, "I'm a drummer that can sing a little". He's a legend now and forever.❤❤
So true. Long live Phil through his masterpieces.
Karen Carpenter said the same thing.
nahhhh he is a singer that can play the drums either way he is a legand
He wrote the song about catching his wife with another man.
The recording was not as good as this recording live. My heart.
"He Plays the drums?"... - Dude, he started as drummer, he entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a Drummer.
One of the best drummers ever!
His surprise made me spit my water lol. It would be nice if reaction ppl did just a LITTLE research on the bands they review
maybe he should watch a video with the Foo Fighters and ask the same question, when Dave Grohl takes over the drums :)
He was the drummer for Genesis.
@@devwoman180 its better that he doesnt know anything, you get better reactions... that why we are here... THE REACTIONS.
Most people have no clue how incredibly difficult it is to sing (and at THIS level) and drum at the same time. Special, special talent.
He was the original drummer in Genesis before Peter Gabriel went on to pursue a solo career...great performance to react too!
i luv "no son of mine", by genesis
He was actually the 3rd drummer for Genesis. He joined them for their 3rd album Nursery Cryme.
He plays the drums?! 😀 ☮️❤️😎
He was a drummer first and foremost, and he is also one of only three recording artists, along with Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson, who have sold over 100 million records both as solo artists and separately as principal members of a band
Definitely need to react to genesis
You made this 70 yr's old, man fall off his chair, with laughter. Watching you learn that Phil Collins plays the drums, is like someone learning rice is white. (most rice.) Hello my brother from another mother.
Hi - at 65 years old, I was laughing too! You said it better than I - my thought was, "You didn't know he *played the drums*?? Oh, you youngster!"
Right there with ya, Dave. Phil Collins is one of the greatest rock and roll drummers to ever twirl a stick!
🤣🤣🤣
I'm 62 and saw Robert Plant at the SF Cow Palace back in '82 or '83, & Phil was on drums.
Love your response, mine was the same! Love watching this younger guys reaction to real damn music.
He doesn't just play them; he's not just also playing the drums, dude. He IS the drummer. Moreover, he is THE drummer.
How blessed we were in the 70's and 80's. Amazing music was all around us. Phil was there.
As an old chick, I giggled watching you think this was a singer who plays the drums. Then I was delighted watching you discover that you just watched a legendary DRUMMER who can also sing!!
me too
Me 3! I was almost in tears at my delight!!
Same here😂😂
❤💯🎯
Me too😅😅😅
Yes, he plays the drums.
One of the best drummers of our lifetime, without question.
And the outfit always gives me the secluded billionaire vibe.
That's it! Secluded billionaire look. I was trying to think of something other than priest.
He always does an amazing job. He writes songs, and I think this was one of his.
@@ademoss80 Kung Fu fighter. Beast on drums.
Love it! Love it!
Darn right , great drummer
Multi genuine talent. This real talent does not exist in the music industry.
Only 1 independent artist matches this kind of talent. "Tom Macdonald "
Always get goosebumps watching Phil perform that one. A legend.
I am from this generation of music, Thank you for honoring it. I just love your reactions.
Everyone in the audience KNEW what was coming… such a great performance!
It's like watching Lynard Skynyrd playing Freebird and the anticipation of the crowd as the tempo increases prior to the guitar solos.
That's why you could feel the energy through the video. I can only imagine actually being there!
Oh yeah, we knew!!!!!
No lip-synching no auto play no glitter cannons, no ass shaking. You might be looking at a masterpiece of what a performance might wanna look like truly iconic.
Probably the best live performance of any song anywhere ever. ...oh to have been there!!!
@@rayaqueen9657i have seen him perform that song live during that tour. Still get goosebumps.
@@Brickmark_brick Oh my!
For certain!
One of the best Drummer's in history.
The Drummer that can sing.
There's no way you don't know that Phil Collins is one of the greatest drummers of the 70s and 80s.
I have been waiting to see your reaction to THIS performance. It was fire!!! Have watched it a 1,000 times and NEVER tire of seeing young people's reactions to his raw talent.😊
A lot of people don't realize that to be a drummer and lead singer you'd have to be a musical genius
I've been playing drums for 15 years. I've tried on and off for probably the equivalent of 5 years to sing and play at the same time. I can't do it. I lose my limb impendence when I try to sing. I can may do a song or 2. It's insanely hard.
@@kdailey4315 Was it Neil Peart of Rush who had trouble learning to ride a motorcycle even though he was a fantastic drummer
Don't forget uber-successful Songwriter/Composer.
@@kdailey4315 Indeed. The drums and voice are in completely different layers of the song. That is of course why we see so few singers that also drums. Or drummers that sings.. however you want to put it.
Throwing out a few retro names of drummer- singers
Karen Carpenter, played drums AND sang until Richard forced her out front. ( Carpenters)
Mikey Dolenz - The Monkees , took lessons to learn to play drums AFTER he got the role. So, he didnt know that it's very difficult. Ignorance is bliss, yah?
Don Henley- the Eagles- no further comment needed😮
Of note- P Collins punctuates his vocals like he is drumming them. Once you detect it, you can't un-hear it. But, that's a GOOD thing, yah? Because he owns that rhythm.
He is one of the world’s best drummers ever! The whole build up is to take him to the drums!
every time I see this performance I get chills. I'm 71 and I've seen him perform several times. A real professional in every sense of the word. I'm glad you enjoyed the old man🤓
Your reaction to Phil sitting down, priceless, knew it was coming, you will never unhear that.
If you’re at a light and someone’s playing the drums, you know it’s Collin’s doing ITAT.
Your face..priceless. Phil is a master of drums and voice and a total enigma by playing both.
The only other one that comes to mind is Levon Helm with The Band.
@@dogsoldiertoo1099 Don't forget Dave Grohl. Drummer for nirvana before lead vocals and guitar for foo fighters 👍
And - then there's Don Henley
Brann Dailor from mastodon also plays the drums while singing.
In case you weren't aware, Phil Collins is a master musician - he can play just about any instrument you throw his direction - no kidding...
If this guy didn't know who Phil Collins is, how is he qualified to judge him? Show how stupid old boy is.
So true ohh so true , seen him in concert 3 times he is amazing, his shows are great not as good as iron maiden but so good
Made this Granny smile as you react to the legendary Phil Collins---yes, he is a drummer! And a singer, multi-instrument musician and performer!! Thanks so much for your video!!
Phil Collins could do it all. Extremely talented, one of the best musicians ever, easily up their with the all time greats
Dude on one of his albums he literally plays every single instrument in every song, and did all of the production work. Guy is a beast.
What album was that?
@@theeggtimertictic1136 Both Sides
@@themontecristo1985 ok thank you 👍
For his vinyl albums, he would hand write the liner notes ...
When I heard you question the headset my instant reaction was "he doesn't know Phil is the drummer." So satisfying to see your reaction! Phil is a legend!
I know, right?? 🤣😂
I know... I watched it waiting for his reaction.. ' any minute nooooow.!'. Boom.. There it was, the look.. Brilliant.. I'm 62 and a big fan. Someone tell him watch Mr blue sky elo. 😁
Jepp! I was like "Wait for it!" 🤣
Getting chills hearing this song........never gets old......... his voice is AMAZING.........
I’m telling you black this is a greatest songs especially 6070s 80s. It’s just great music great and I appreciate you doing this and this is these songs is carry me home for a while. You go back when you were teenager and you know.
One of the best drummer's of all times !!
A left handed drummer, world class. The intro and slow walk around the staged was perfectly timed to showcase the talents of the entire band.
Left handed!! Wow, just like Ringo Starr. It seems left handed drummers are amazing!
@@Shasha-yg1mmyes we are 😊 and stage hands hate us 😉
@@EmmaBadOne Maybe that's why Ringo always used right handed drums.
Despite seeing this a million times I am always afraid he isn’t going to make it to the drums in time.😂
@@marquisdelafayette1929I know me too 😂😂
Phil Collins is one of the best drummers of his generations IMO. So funny to see your reaction to him playing the drums!
He is one of the BEST drummers of all time. He is on my top 5 drummer list!
"He plays the Drums?!?" - Phil Collins started in this industry as a drummer. He played the drums on a ton of tracks for Genesis (the band he was in before he went solo.) So yes, Phil Collins plays the drums.
😂 I was so shocked and laughing! Poor BP!
I grew up as a kid when Phil played on everyone’s records and Michael McDonald sang on all of them, too. 🤣 And you would actually know this because - liner notes. I’m that old. ❤
couldnt have put it better
Didn't he play all the instruments on " can't hurry love" and recorded the drums first?
@@NoCanDu
Micheal McDonald never sang on any of Phil Collins or Genesis tunes.
It's counterintuitive to sing lead and play drums simultaneously. It's a rare talent only few master. Phil Collins is a master.
Not really. Much like dancing and singing, or playing piano or guitar.
Simply another motion added to what you are already doing.
Playing any instrument while singing is equally challenging.
I actually find backup and harmony singing tougher than the lead. Playing stuff off and complimentary to the lead. Interjected part lyrics often instead of the whole logical line.
Enjoyable challenge.
Paulina (Pau) of The Warning sings and plays drums too. She is very young and is already great so she will only improve with age.
And Roger Taylor of Queen!
Don Henley.
Peter Criss
One of the best parts of this, this one still plays the drums wait for it. It’s great.❤❤❤❤
Phil is one of the handful of people who could drum incredibly well and sing on the planet. These type of "monsters" are extremely, EXTREMELY rare.
He was originally just the drummer way back when the band Genesis first started out. At that time Peter Gabriel was the lead singer. When Peter left the band to pursue a solo career, the band started auditioning for a new lead singer. In the meantime, the plan was for Phil to temporarily take over the lead singing duties. Turned out they never hired a replacement lead singer, and it was Phil ever since. This particular song came from one of Phil's solo albums.
Yes he's has a voice back in the day everyone could actually sing. That's why we had the best of music 70th 80th And 90th
Right on !!!✌
The fact that he can both play drums and sing at the same time is very rare. He's unique for this ability.
It's not as rare as you might think, I know a few on the local pub music circuit who can play drums and sing at the same time but I don't know how many of those (if any) could deliver that vocal performance and drum performance simultaneously.
Yes the entrances were everything back in the day...teaches patience and the anticipation is amazing.
One of the greatest drummers of all time. Phil's 100% verified GOAT.
John Bonham & Neil Peart might want a word, well, they would if they could.
@@glennjones2635and Keith Moon
Phil Collins was the drummer for the iconic rock band Genesis. Genesis, known for selling over 100 million records, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Phil Collins not only played the drums but also took over the role of lead singer after the departure of Peter Gabriel. His distinctive drumming style and soulful vocals left an indelible mark on the music world.
I've seen Genesis at Peoples' Park in Bezerkly.
His finest drumming can be heard in his other band, Brand X.
Never forget staying up late on Friday nights to catch Phil Collins on MTV singing and playing the drums. Legend!!!!
Your response is magnificent! And you are right, audience absolutely knew what was coming. Phil been tearin it up for a long time.
The reaction to the drumming WILL NEVER get old. 😂
It's fun knowing what's coming up and just watching the face.
Never
Thats gotta be the quote of the day!!!! " He plays the drums?"
"He's the drummer??" YES It's Phil f**king Collins!! Awesome performance!! ❤
"Different layers to music" love that. Phil Collins is a legend here in the uk, has been for decades.. Peace & Love from Liverpool Uk ✌🏼
He IS a drummer...who became a singer!!🎶🥁🎶🎵💙
Sounds like Karen Carpenter story as well eehh!!
He plays lots of instruments! I believe he wrote this while going through his divorce. She initiated it because She was in an affair! He was on the road getting his career started & she Thought he was fooling around but in the bio I heard that he didn't have time for it with trying to make it big. & Make It, He Did!❤
@@marshawargo7238 id read that his first wife was having an affair with a local decorator, and had been overheard in a pub talking to her friends about how this decorator earnt a decent income while Phil Collins and the others in Genesis were doing the pub/club rounds not earning much. And that being the reason he often sat a paint pot on the stage at the start of any concerts, ie just to stick up two fingers at them lol
Man, that was a perfect reaction to finding out Phil is a worldclass drummer. I'm jealous you get to experience that for the first time as an adult.
Ahhhh, to be a teenager cruising main street on a Friday night. Windows down, blasting from cassette player In the Air Tonight. Those were great times!
I love how these young people under 40 are the critics for these very well known performers. I think it's cute how they React. Phill Collins Started as a drummer For the group genesis, then became a vocalist when he broke out on his own. He is amazing, and one of my all time favorite Singers, songwriters, and percussionist.
He was in Genesis from 1970 to 1996. then 2000 to 2020. He was drummer from 1970 to 1993 when Peter Gabriel left, and then he was drummer and lead singer for over 20 years.
He's actually 44 and I'm often surprised someone that age wouldn't know certain songs, but everyone's life is different and not everyone gets exposed to the same things I guess.
Best drum drop EVER! Goosebumps every single time I watch this!
OMG! You had the best reaction to this video. YOU were speechless. Phil Collins made you speechless. Mark this day down in history!😆🤣🥳😱🫣
Phil Collins was my very first concert ever. I saw him perform in 1985 at a venue called, “Poplar Creek” near Chicago. I was 16. It was phenomenal. He performed this same song walking to the drums and killed it then too. ❤
Phil Collins, is one of the best drummers ever! GOAT! Sadly, he has stopped playing drums, due to serious back issues.
Just watching your reaction was priceless. Phil is a very gifted man. He's wrote many many songs for himself and others. There's only one Phil Collins.
Amen to that!!!
Yep this song was about him witnessing his friend drawn and the man who did go to jail.
he not only plays drums, he reinvented drums sound... Absolute legend
You can't beat these 80s talent, the old dogs have the magic the charm! Ain't nuttin like it. That's raw talent! Old school the best.
I was 14 when I listend to Genesis for the first time...in Germany...I am living in France now, and I still love Phil Collins..
What a great singer and musician❤
Thanks so much
He doesn't just play the drums, too, he's one of the all time great drummers. Collins is an all-around hit-making-beast. My parents dug him, I dig him, my kids dig him, and he just has hit after hit on his list. A few years ago, he started touring with his son, who was something like 16 at the time and my dude just beats those drums like they owe him money. He really takes after his dad. It has been sad to see Collins age to the point where he has a hard time standing anymore and it's rough for him to hit the drums, but it's also great to see him perform with his son. I'll be heartbroken the day we lose the man. I've been a fan of his music since I was like 10.
I was lucky enough to see his concert in 2019 where his son was beating the drums right up there with his dad...he obviously learned from the master
It was not his age that caused his current state of health. he dislocated vertebrae in his neck during a Genesis reunion tour. he lost mobility due to that accident.
As a 40-plus year drummer , Phil is a great musician , well rounded , and very talented . However among drummers, he is on nobody's " all-time great list."
Those would be names like Buddy Rich , Ed Shaughnessy, Neil Peart , Stewart Copeland , Mike Portnoy , even Phil's stage drummer ( Dennis Chambers ) is considered an all time great drummer , by other drummers.
Composer too
Even if you've heard the song before, this live performance is in another dimension
I love watching these reaction videos, waiting for the drum drop! Real singing, real musicians. That’s how you entertain.
He played for years. Iconic. Genesis is his band. His health is not so good anymore. Prayers for him. Saw him in Tampa in the 90s
He was always a drummer, when the band needed a singer Phil said I'll try, and the rest is history.
What blows my mind is... What were the chances his singing voice would sound so much like Peter Gabriel?? What a stroke of great luck
@@caseyh8386 Really? I know people don't see the same things watching the same thing, but I didn't realize we don't hear the same thing listening to they same thing.
@@carolmorgan6734 🧐😳😅🤣
I dont want to correct you, that may have happened just after this happened. However, I watched a documentary where Mike and Tony were explaining how Phil started singing. They said they auditioned loads of people. Phil would lead them in, help them out, do a bit of singing to get things going. Mike and Tony said at the end of the day none of the candidates were better than Phil! So I guess they asked him in a round about sort of way :)
@@HDCYT Yeah I just condensed all that. Sorry I left you with the impression that I didn't know.
This was one of the most epic performances of this song. He can not only sing but his drum playing is on point and damn if he can’t do both at the same time !! TALENT!!!
Phil has played the drums for 40 years.
you don't know how hard that is to sing on key that good and play the drums at the same time!!! PURE BEAST
He was first a percussionist.
His drums are like Santana's guitar...unmistakable!
That isn't strictly speaking true. He was in musical theatre as a child. In 1964 at the age of 13 he played the Artful Dodger in the first West End production of Oliver (he was not however the first person to have the role, the show opened in 1960). Phil also appeared in films as well.
But you are right that he rose to fame as a drummer in Genesis before becoming known as a vocalist.
@@petervenkman69 I didn't know his earlier background. Thanks!

His catalogue is iconic and legendary.
Back in the 80's, sitting at a red light with this on the radio. You look around just as the drums hit, half the other drivers play air drums with you.
I still play the air drums on this one.
Truth
So true. I'd hear this song starting on the radio, then I'd put all the windows down in my Hearst Oldsmobile and crank my Blaupunkt up to 11. I'd hope I'd get stuck at a light when the drums kicked in just to treat whoever was stuck at the light with me. Good times!!!
Still do!!
Best song to blast with the windows down!!
The man is a legend and a national treasure here in UK... this performance is phenomenal.. Thank you for making my evening great
Phil is a one man band! Bad ass and cold! He's 🔥🔥🔥!
Phil Collins is a master at a ton of instruments! He's a true musical genius!!!
Its wild that a lot of people still don't know Phil is a drummer but he honestly is known mostly for his singing to mainstream audiences not deep into the stuff he has been involved with over the years. The big 80's gated snare huge drum room sound? Phil Collins and the boys literally invented it because Peter Gabriel forced him to play without using cymbals of any kind so they had to fill the drum mix with something. Dude pioneered a whole ass decade defining production technique that is still used to this day and one of the core components of the sound of the 1980's
You miss the point, you forget he was the lead singer and drummer in Genesis. I only know one more more band with the lead singer to be a drummer, its a Finnish band called the hurryganes, good band by the way, look it up.
