Your video is well made and you go step by step on the repair great work!
YOU are a craftsman! This was a great demo, I never considered shaping down my own key with the bench grinder. Snowblower key broke in the middle of a snowstorm of course, so making my own fix. Don't know what I'd do without UA-cam :) Thumbs UP all the way!

Nice piece of work fabricating that Woodruff key and getting that old machine working hard again. Ariens built machines to last a very long time!
Thank you for posting this... this is exactly what is going on with mine...perhaps i will not be shoving this year!
That sure looks like an old-time snow blower ! I'm glad to see that many tools can be made to last a very long time with decent maintenance...🔧
00 Cornhead grease world well when the seals are shot in an old gearbox. Got a ‘77 Ariens 24” snow blower still kicking. Built like tanks.
nice improvising. i had to make a round key way for a pump on a wood splitter once. stilling working to this day.
@gstebb62 how about the auger bushings at each end of the shaft?
Great video thanks for sharing.
@gstebb62 i forget if it was bearings or bushings, but i do know that the casing has separate oil seals
I love these videos man. I wish all mechanics were as competent as you!
+TheNoBSZone thanks for watching
I know Im kinda off topic but does anyone know of a good place to stream newly released tv shows online?
@Brixton Derek Flixportal
@Jack Davion Thanks, I went there and it seems like a nice service :) I appreciate it !!
@Brixton Derek no problem xD
Kudos. Love your Videos. I'm an Electrical Guy so my Mechanical knowledge is limited. Your very informative videos have gotten me out of a few situations. BTW-I'm a "Tightwad Yankee" up here in New England.
thanks for watching
good one, thank you...
@custer123100 it's 10hp and i think it's 30" cut
Good job on cutting and shaping your own keyway. And not much snow? That's more than we see here in the Southern U.S.
Donyboy73, do you have vids on the newer gearbox disassembly for the ariens deluxe 28 sho. Need to remove worm shaft & gear? All your small engine fixes & maintenance have been awesome. Thank you
Dony it looked like the gear teeth were worn on the drive pressure side and because the gear looked symmetrical I would have turned it over so the unworn side of the teeth would be used and extend the operating life. In fact if it is not too much trouble I would have flipped he worm gear as well.
That old Ariens blower is twice the machine as my Craftsman 536.887992. Wish I had a new one.
@starakobieta never heard of it, is it chinese made?
@TRcustomengineering thanks man
there called woodruff keys and Napa sells them. rockford hardware makes them
Thank you for this, I had no idea what to look for!
I have a question for you. I have the gear case almost apart but I can't get the worm gear out. The rake shaft, dust cap, and side cover are off. The bull gear shaft doesn't want to come out as it interferes with the pinion gear. Any help is appreciated.
Could you please give me advice on my Ariens snowblower , There was a chunk of ice that prevented the impeller from rotating ,I kept squeezing the handle on the handle lever then smoke came out of the side, I stopped cleared all the ice out now the impeller doesnt move at all, the engine runs fine and the the tires rotate good as well, I can only use it as a plow,, could you please tell me what I broke? Thank you
@gstebb62 i would have to see a video at least of it
These Ariens are really bulletproof, they have the same gearbox on their tiller.
I have a Noma 824. The impeller turns but Auger does not. Would this either be the Gear is chewed up or the Keyway missing/broke?
Thanks!
have you heard of a blue max chainsaw i got one but idk how good of a brand it is
yes it could be
Sir,
Do you have any video on "how to remove and replace old Ariens (model 24" sno - thro 10995) jaw clutch (part number 10176). It's for the single belt mechine. Thanks.
@mmichaelc thanks, make sure to subscribe
Just replaced a gear case assembly on a small Ariens and trying to figure out why my impeller shaft is 3/16 off center coming out the back of the bucket.
Looking at the Auger side of things, I need the case to move to the right but I have no space, I'm metal to metal with the Right Auger touching the case and the auger shaft braket.
What am I missing here? I'm seriously considering cutting 3/16 off of the right Auger to solve.
I have an Ariens 1336 that needs a new auger shaft. I made a new shaft but I need to know what direction the gear goes on. The internal key way on the worn gear shaft doesn’t go through. Not sure which way the gear goes to mate with the worm. Any help. Thanks
Wow.., you couldn't have bought a better key!
Great job!
I'm just trying to figure what parts to order for the repair.
@Slane583 its okay but what website is it?
Right on , gonna pull that gearbox apart and see if that's the problem
Great videos! I was able do a teardown for 25-year-old Agri-Fab Craftsman snowblower attachment expect for the worm gear shaft like the one shown in this video. Do you have video that shows how the remove worm gear shaft from the auger shaft axel?
it would be similar like in this video ua-cam.com/video/btLsiLseXZ0/v-deo.html
@@donyboy73 Thanks for the quick reply. I watched this video before, but I think I got it now. I assume there is a Woodruff key to keep the worm gear shaft in place on the auger shaft.
Since I don't have a long 1-1/8" pipe or a Seperator fork, I'm going to give it a try by drilling a 1-1/8" hold in old 4"x4" wood post that hopefully won't crack from the force.
Where can you find that worm gear?
@starakobieta I found some info on that brand and from the looks of it. It's an American made saw sold by Home Depot. It looks like it's fairly durable to me, but there's no Home Depot around here. So I can't see one in person. I have a link but it seems UA-cam won't let me post it in the box here. Prick's.
@thumasta666 , good idea, i thought we lived in a freezer here in winter, lol
yes i beleve it is
I just aquired my first snow blower Craftsman 10/32, and I thing you are gonna be my go to move when I have a problem cause you know your stuff.
I could use a manual and can't find 1 anywhere for my model-C950-52379-5 It's made in Canada don't know the year either.
Think you can help? Thanks and keep the videos coming they're great.
you would have to google it or try partstree.com
I've done both of those things and turned up nothing. Not sure what else to do, seems to be just 1 of those mass produces 1 off items. lol thanks . Maybe you have an idea of why it doesn't drive straight in gear or just pushing it, it pulls left. Tire pressure seems fine btw. Thanks again for the help and the great videos.
@Smallgasengine1 not really
Donyboy73.... dam your good. Could you tell me if the 9 HP Tecumseh snow king engine has a cast iron sleeve? I'd appreciate any information? I've got one on a 2003 29'' X9 Craftsman.
+Robert Davis some do some don't
next time, try putting the shaft in the freezer for a couple hours, it will shrink the metal and allow it to go in easier :D
Donyboy73...I'm real stuck...been working on this for at least a couple of years...Ive been going thru auger belts so regularly on my mtd 10.5. I've replaced the bearing, impeller shat and both pulleys. When I spin the auger pulleys by hand I can still see a definite run out on the pulleys which I'm positive is causing the premature belt wear and ultimately throwing the belt(s) off again. I'm stumped... would you be able to offer any suggestions...I've certainly researched your videos but of course have had no success. Thanks.
...I should mention as well, the worm gear looks fine...I thought perhaps the teeth may be worn, but they look like these on the video.
watch my video "what to look for when buying a used snowblower" in it you will see that mtd blowers crack and it causes belts to break
donyboy73 I did watch that one and thought it may be the solution because one of my bolts had cracked off. I replaced it with another bolt/washer/nut combo thinking that would solve the problem, but no. I have the auger assembly in the basement and as I mentioned, when I spin the installed auger pulley(s), I can see a definite run out (whether I try the old or new pulleys).. Could there be a "whoops" in my worm gear that I can't see causing my (new) impeller shaft and (new) pulleys to have that runout? I used to be an auto mechanic and try to work methodically but I feel like I'm throwing parts at this and it drives me crazy.
pretty nifty repiar
Do you recommend use tire chairs on snowblower?
only on those with turf tires
What would cause a rattling/vibration from auger when blowing snow/underload?
Sounds almost like a gear is slipping teeth or something.
When draining the gear box lube out, what type do I replace it with?
Thanks
Rob
type "00" grease, that's zero zero
donyboy73
any brand, as long as it is 00, Also how much do you think I will need
probably 250ml or 1 cup
@VILLAPRO71 ask liamautomechanic
could be.....what. If the Keyway was ok and the Worm Gear chewed up wouldn't you get some sort of motion from the Auger and conversely if the Keyway was missing wouldn't the Auger spin freely?
Thanks!
' half moon key! lol.. 'wood-ruff' is the correct term for this key.. good as vid all the same..
right woodruff key
@7t6e354r oui
looks like the gear it's self could have used some replacing
1. That is called a Woodruff key. 2. You are making a key and not a keyway. The keyway is the slot that the key goes into on both parts....
the key is a key...not a keyway.....the keyway is the groove and/or seat where the key resides....you cant be missing a keyway
That's a old timer
What "flavor" of grease...?
LUBRIPLATE?...
