Thanks for an excellently produced video with clear and concise explanations. My wife and I replaced the auger gear in a Sears machine, which we were ready to junk. Could not have done it without your instructions.
Thanks again, Dony, for a great series of vids. I did pretty much the same repair to a Snapper branded blower. I found a replacement gear here in the US for about forty dollars. Had I watched your vids first I would have saved myself a whole bunch of time. I also found that the inner most portions of the augers were bent to the outside, such that the blower would push some of the snow to the sides. Bending the augers inwardly so that they just barely clear the shaft cleared up the problem.
Thanks a lot!!! This was great, I have a broken Toro 521 snowblower that looks pretty much like yours. Now I know what to do. I had a pretty good idea but seeing someone else doing it for real makes all the difference. Great job man!
Donny, I'm following everything that I have learned from you to repair my Ariens st405 snowblower. There was liquid gear oil in the auger crankcase can I use a grease like you used for my application or should I stick with the liquid gear oil?
Such a crush on you now, Donyboy73! Been watching your videos all week to learn how to repair my PowerSmart 22" 2stage blower. Every time I have a question, you have a video that answers it. You rock! Thanks for posting. -- cheers from Massachusetts.
We had the same exact problem with that gear on our Snowblower, it literally looked exactly the same as yours all chewed up. Not sure what they were thinking using a brass gear and then only putting grease in there. Our snowblower was only 2 years old when it went. Replaced the gear, cleaned everything, and put a decent amount of gear oil in there is what I did. No issues so far.
Thank you, really good explanation. Im trying to repair my Sno -Trac blower but I can't find the worm gear it has 20 teeth , inner diameter it is 7/8" outside diameter I will say 2" or little less. there is 2 square gaps in the inner diameter 1" from the deeper side of one square to the other square. Any ideas where to look for? or any OMG parts with that description. I will appreciate any help.
To clean out the gear case housing with the broken gear parts and grease is to put the two halves in a container of boiling hot water. After 5/10 minutes the grease will melt and then take a blowgun with compressed air and blow it out clean. Allot faster than degreaser or brake cleaner. All it cost you was two quarts of water.
If you don't mind I have one more question for you. How much slower should the auger spin from the impeller? My father's impeller is spinning like crazy where the auger is spinning very slow, I've checked some other videos on here to compare to see & I believe that his should be turning quicker than it is?
would it be possible to use the auger gearbox and shaft as like a rear end for a go kart if you took off the impeller and made some kind of U joint that attaches to a clutch then to the shaft? that would be cool
Cereal box gaskets can work in a silicone sandwich. Thing to consider is thickness of the final sandwich because it influences how the two gear box pieces mate and form diameters around the shaft bearings and oil seals (oil seal outside diameters are important too). Cardboard is obviously water soluble so a cheap sheet of .020 gasket material might be a good investment.
I understand you are using 00 consistency grease - Excellent choice to keep the gear wetted especially in cold temperature - But do you know the specs of the base oil in that grease? Worm gears require ISO 480-680 viscosity base oils to resist shear... I'm looking for a generic equivalent...
So glad to see you are using the idea about the gas and paintbrush and passing it on to your viewers, it works very well. Looks like you bought the brushes from Home Hardwear they look just like the box of 4 that I buy, LOL Oh and thanks for the videos, take care.
Donyboy73 how can I find parts for this machine? I have the identical machine minus the master craft logo and when I search the model number i can’t find anything, I’m looking for the proper belt for the auger drive, I bought mine and when engaged it has almost 2 inches of slack with the idler adjusted all the way tight.
1. does the primer bulb squirt gas into the throttle body, or does it just fill the metering chamber?...does the primer bulb always sit on the metering side, or the pump side, or both?...thanks..
I have a Craftsman 5HP snow thrower whose gear assembly is very similar so have a question. When putting assembly back together I am running into a problem where the two pieces will not seat evenly. It seems to have something to do with the bearing flange. Does this sound right and could you show how the flat piece is to sit when reassembling? THanks,
i use a wee drop of kerosine, for washingthe grease and oil and dirt etc, safer than, gasoline, good power on the buff, wire wheel, there, good vid dony,
Also tell about the transmission assembly old yardmachine22”by MTD .I OPENED the gear box worm and bushes are fine only one gear is wrong how I can replace it .thaning you.
Good job there only note ... if used for Abrasives Aamot stirring Paper will be better too will ensure the absence of any voids that can occur due to Tserbian stone
You know I put it on a vice then cleaned everything and see exactly what you are speaking of. There are three that need to align for cover to sit flush. Thank you for your response.
Hi Don. Great video as usual. I have a question. Could Lithium grease be used as a substitute for this application? I have to replace the gear in my MTD snowblower and I have a container of Lithium grease already. I didn't know if that would work as well.
You should only grind the shaft with the wire brush...that way the oil/grease seal of the gearbox will last longer...if it's too rought it will worn out the seal lip...
I live in Canada as well and almost all the parts I find online are from America with expensive shipping and expensive parts..... 2-4 bucks for a screw! Any tips as to a Canadian site? Also, I'm about to install a worm gear myself, can it be put on backwards?
Nice I have a 2010 ariens 13 32 my son hit something with it in wet snow found out it broke the center auger gear that the belt goes on and broke part of the inside where the pulleys are just got it back under warranty still cost 57 bucks said as was told break away bolts shold have protected it but I had to pay for gear they replaced whole auger housing . I have a 1994 MTD 10 30 that has hit bricks and everthing not much damage but alas MTD rusted out do not make them like that anymore
wow, is some really bad damage on that gear.. never seen anything like that, incredible. :o I always like to think of the forces that can cause a solid metal gear to shred into pieces, and it must have been quite nasty (and noisy I reckon).
I have a 44" snowblower attachment for my John Deere LA130... the brass gear inside the gear box is "toast" any idea where I can get a replacement gear, instead of the $300 gear box assembly
I have to replace the auger drive shaft from a junk I got it. Have dismantled the gearbox and ready to reassemble with the simple instructions you have shown. I was worried that the key wouldn't lock the worm gear tightly, but seeing your video I just have to make sure it is locked in. Thanks donyboy!
Where do I buy retail just for the gear Donny. Great video as I was told to junk the machine. I enjoyed taking it apart and seeing how it worked.are all gears standard sizes or do they vary ?
I have a toro snowblower 521 model 38052 1988 what I'm asking is about the seals for each side. Can I just buy new seals or do I need to buy a whole new gear box?
@@donyboy73 what would these seals be called exactly ? I was able to buy the worm gear and all the bushings for 50.00 off eBay. Looked brand new. The gear itself goes brand new for 120.00

Ur the best show on you tube. I’m suprised a TV channel hasn’t picked you up like Holmes 🙂

@mskehan19 the bearing flange usually has to sit in a certain position or the covers won't go on properly

@jlchevy82 check the pin at the end of the shaft that goes through the wheel

Thanks for the video! Great explanation, very helpful.
you're welcome
@Liamautomechanic it was snowing a bit today, still some snow left
@pivotboy63 they spin pretty slow and it would probably wear out the bushings in it.
I had to use a new gearbox case due to the carnage. The new case's bolt holes are not threaded. Do the bolts thread themselves or should i tap them??
I didn't know you can make gaskets out of cardboard! That's awesome!
@jlchevy82 no problem, make sure to subscribe

@ringbolt9 the cardboard will last for sure
@mskehan19 the augers will spin like 5 times slower than the impeller, this is normal
explain in punjabi
Thank you for the video. I would like to know if there is any roller bearing in the gearbox and where are they located?

YOU'RE WELCOME
Thanks for informative videos, what kind grease did you use , can you give us brand name ..
I used "00" zero zero grease
They are a pain and if you let them go dry, they are gone in 60 seconds. Making sure ALL the parts fit well (especially the seals) will help
@Liamautomechanic thanks, how are things, -1 c today
I like the gasket. I made 2 head gaskets for briggs and stratton engines out of the back of a notebook. No silicone. And not one blew out lol
Avoid this type of damage by keeping the gear box lubricated and using the proper shear pins on the auger shaft.
@mskehan19 ok, that's good

Brass or Bronze but NOT steel for the wheel.
nice gasket, theres a vid.

brass gear should be steel
Safety feature. It will destroy itself if someone decides to put hardened bolts in place of the sheer bolts.
you right
