Thanks for the video. I just wanted to say that my MTD snowblower had the wheels lock up due to the needle bearings being rusted and I took it apart, cleaned out the rust, greased them up and it works fine now. I think if you catch it early enough that the bearings aren't ruined you should be able to fix it. Now I just need to re-grease every couple of years...
I am so thankful you posted this video of the MTD Transmission and Gear replacement. It saved me a costly repair and and no snow removal with incoming snowstorms! Thanks again. Excellent Video.
Compliments on another excellent video. Excellent camera work, clear concise, methodical instructions and common sense repair analysis. Truly quality work.
+L Malino thanks
Great how-to video. Great camera work, audio and closeups. Well done. I purchased the kit and have started the work. I did run into a problem where the wheel would not come off one side. A little heat did the trick. Thanks for your work.
After cleaning the driven plate, I always sand it with rough sandpaper to knock the gloss off it and provide better power transfer.
I hope never to have to do this on my 1995 MTD 640F but if I do it's nice to know that there is an outstanding how to video here to tackle the project.
Wow I checked the part number and 65.99 for the set and the parts were made in 2004 yours said 2005 but the site I went to said parts were made in 2004 and still available . cant wait for part 2 were going to get more snow up to 9 inches Friday when Trout season is open and I want to wheelchair myself to the creek across the street from me down the lane 1/4 mile the creek is high and will be stocked sometime in April cant wait to fish again
First off I want to thank Donyboy73 for this great video. I own the MTD 1995 model 317e644e129 of this snow blower. I tried to purchase the kit you used but it is not offered for my older model. I asked MTD to give me a price of all the transmission parts included in the kit you bought and they estimated about $450! I told the lady in parts that my problem is that the snowblower no longer goes by itself, I have to push it up and down my driveway. It still blows the snow. The woman mentioned maybe its your keyway. I opened my snowblower up and was surprised at how different it was from yours. Mine is a much simpler design. What is a keyway you ask? It is a 1/2 inch piece of metal that is curved on one side and flat on the other, like a 1/2 moon. The curved side fits into a slot in the axle and the flat side sticks out of the axle by about an eighth of an inch. The lady was right. Mine was missing. I took the wheels off, pulled the axle and gear off the machine, bought a keyway from my local yard machine repair shop for $1.00 (I brought the axle and gear in with me to be sure I got the right keyway) fit the keyway into the slot on the axle, slid the axle back onto the machine making sure the flat part of the keyway that is sticking out from the axle slides into a slot on the gear. Put it backed together, started her up, engaged the clutch and it took off! So for $1.00 I fixed my snowblower!! No more pushing that damn thing manually up and down the driveway! All I needed was a keyway. Now the axle turns the gear and the gear turns the wheels as it should. I followed your recommendations for cleaning and lubricating the snowblower and I am now ready for winter here in NJ. Thanks a lot!
+Alan Prachar that's a cheap fix lol
@ringbolt9 it's better to remove to install grease but you can use chain lube in a can and spray it in the bearings without removing anything
Hi Dony and fellows Donyboy fans. I really appreciate this series. I have learned a ton from watching these. I have an issue with my Husqvarna 10530sbe that I am hoping some can help with. I have posted the video of the issue here on youtube with the title "Husqvarna 10530SBE Gears Locking Up" and I appreciate any assistance. Thanks everyone!
@Smallgasengine1 no it will not be the same, only to those in the video
It's amazing to me that MTD expects you to practically disassemble the transmission just to perform routine maintenance like greasing the needle bearings!
wow thanks, please tell your friends and thanks for subscribing!
@cardo1111 your 1995 snowblower is much simpler and more reliable
Hey Donyboy 73 - I love your videos for working on and fixing snowblowers. You are very thorough and explain things very well. I bought a used MTD GOLD Yard Machine 2-Stage snow blower with a 10HP Tecumseh motor (28inch cut and 12inch impeller). I've opened the belly and things appear OK, but I would say "dry" after watching how you grease your machines. You mention in this video putting grease (white Lithium or Aeroshell 22) throughout the gears where you normally cannot get to and mention to grease this yearly..........you take the transmission apart every year and re-grease it? Also some of the gear teeth of the snowthrower you work on here are broken. Is there any behavior that the snow thrower will demonstrate that would make me think that I should take the transmission apart to check for this? I did get a good deal on this thrower as far as I can tell, but I want to make it last and get the most out of it. I found an online owners manual and it suggests SAE 5W30 or SAE 10 oil......do you have a preference? Thanks for your great videos! Rythmblood
Excellent video, I have a 13 hp 33" yardman snowblower in which the chain drive jumps on the gears for both wheels, myself wants over $500.00 just for the rebuild kit....was thinking of trying to install spring loaded wheel tensioners for each chain to take up the slack, any thoughts? Greg
I love your videos, they have saved me a ton of time and money, also make me feel less of a dumbass when I can fix my own stuff, lol. I am currently having trouble with my MTD snowblower shifter jumping out of lower gears and going all the way to 5th while going forward and 2nd speed reverse when backing up. Any ideas?
Great video - can you explain how to replace the chain only - mine has fallen off and I see no adjustments to loosen/tighten?
Thanks.
i would have to see it
@ncrdisabled part 2 tommorrow
Donyboy, I was given a mtd 10hp snowblower that had many problems. The one that is left is this. It backfires and misses. I have gone through the carb and it is all perfect (nonajustable) I adjusted the valves and lapped them, All is well there now. Cleaned fuel etc. Checked the flywheel key. that's good. But still missing and backfiring. I read on a blog that the lighted snow blowers have extra magnets that make spark 6 times per rev and those can mess up the timing/condenser. I am stumped here. What do you think?
if it has points yes check the flywheel magnets, also the carb may be the problem
you said about greasing the rollar bearings each year. does the gear have to be removed to do that?
Great Video..It explains a lot! Thanks!
thanks for posting..mine keeps jumping out of gear.from 1st to 3rd..
You’re amazing.
you can put bearings in the gears i had to on one ... any chance you would sell the shaft for the wheels alone (used one ) in in canada kingston
would never seize work on the shaft as welll as grease you think?
Question about the friction disc assembly my Troy-Bilt has the same setup but the wheels move freely made some adjustments the wheels now try to move but do not moving gear but I can push it freely in your opinion would this be that part friction disc assembly
What if the big disk goes bad what part # would that be,and can you just buy the friction drive disk?
Thank you, what is the kit part # or part #'s used. Thank you.
@GarrisGates i guess we canadians get ripped off
i have the same snow blower.any ideas how to remove wheel that is rusted on?
I have this machine
I am using grade 5 bolts to hold the wheels on.. but the grade 5 bolts are breaking. Gosh what to do
Vraiment bien expliqué
merci
Just wondering where in Ontario are you located?
Can I ask where can you order that transmission kit?
Hi donyboy73, i have MTD snowblower "Yardworks" and I was told that I have to replace drive shaft on it. The wheels seized and I can't push the blower at all but when I start the engine and press the handle to go forward the wheels start to move. The model # is 31AE6MKO513 serial # S1I304B30317 001 would the parts kit number be the same as in your video?
Thanks!
Ted
if it looks the same then it should be the same part number
what is the difference between the grease?
The chains are ruined.
You MIGHT be able to get away with just buying new chains....HOWEVER IF the SPROCKETS (they are not "gears"), are not completely wore out.
If the sprockets are worn to sharp points & they now resemble saw blades, they are 'screwed'. You are forced to replace all.
THEN try your chain tension trick.
It might last 1 or 2 seasons. Eventually the chains will be so worn the inner sides will rub together.
Then def you must buy new, & by then it will cost $750 for the kit.
How important is the small washer you install from the old hex shaft at 8:30? My parts kit diagram doesn't show one and it looks like whoever took it apart last misplaced it.
+dp2826 i wouldn't worry about it
+donyboy73 Ok, thanks. Great job on the videos!
I found the exact kit for $45.99 at Mowtown.
i have a mtd 28 inch 10hp how do i move the oger the trbine is it keys or bolts can some one tall me
