The gear box fluid is probably overlooked a lot of times or just checked but not changed. Nice job maintaining it with severe gear.

Why didn't you just remove the cover all fluid drained out and changed.
You could. I didn't have gasket and were planning to take it apart if it’s not broken.
@repairvehicle there is no such parts which would come out. Gasket can't be too expensive.
@@emilpartanen8719 Agree, the gasket is readily available from Honda and you can do an inspection inside the case, check the gears, and remove all the old gear oil.
I hear different opinions on whether grease or gear oil should be used here. But there is no grease nipple on the gear box, only a single hole like yours. So gear oil should be fine?
If gear oil is coming out then gear oil should be used

its means it has not been changed in long time and should be replaced
I used same oil as in engine 5w30 winter oil. was that wrong? should i take it out and refill with other oil?
Gear box requires gear oil. Do you put gear oil inside engine? No it’s not gear box

@mrconta , sales people job is to sell more and not less. They are not technical people that actually get their hands dirty and understand how equipment works.
@@repairvehicle yes that is true. I have HS55 and mine looks the same with the bolt high up in middle. In order to get all out I tilted the machine forward a lot so the handles stood right up in the sky otherwise a lot of oil is still trapped. Now after I did it I wonder if it's bad for the engine to been tilted so much forward? Can I damage anything?

@repairvehicle Can't really compare a cars transmission to this low stressed little gearbox....
I think it calls for 80W-90 which is best. Motor oil is a lot less viscous than gear oil. IMHO, while Honda probably wants 80W-90, I'd be comfortable running an 80 to 85 weight gear oil. By definition you're using the machine in cold weather and the gear box is constantly getting show on it which keeps it cool.
That said, The motor oil is probably hurting it too much but if you use the right oil that gear box will last longer and something else will break. :)
Typo Correction: the motor oil is probably NOT hurting it too much.
Gear oil has different properties to prevent gears from binding and wearing out.
Engine oil gets acidic due to CO and CO2 created during combustion. No such problem with transmissions and gear boxes unless they share sump with engine.
All fluids get acidic when they are in use.
Really no reason to change this .
Best thing to do is just check this oil and watch for leaks.

I change the gear oil in my Harley annually whi h is overkill, but it makes a difference. So why not in a blower as well. Both items are seasonal use is my point. Great video!
