My Last Day at Full-Time UPS Package Handler: A Warning

- The job itself is super manageable and doable but poor communication combined with several workers who aren't willing to do overtime will force temps and hard workers to feel obligated to work longer.
This was my last day at UPS as a full time temporary package handler. I was a sorter for both the night shift and the preload. I wanted to put this up mainly to wrap up a few more thoughts that weren't covered in my previous videos and also to add in a bit more content since I haven't been uploading much as late.
My last week and a half at UPS was an uphill battle. I got used to the workload of the usual 9 hr per day with a 1 hr break in between and often a good amount of overtime everyday. That was doable. When my lunch was cut in due to the workload, that's when the work got tougher. The full one hour break was an ample amount of time for me to enjoy food and stretch out sore muscles. When cut to less than 30 minutes, I was always going into the second shift half awake and fatigued. On top of this, I noticed that the higher ups tried to keep me as long as possible by providing me with a paraphernalia of things to do. If one task was done past overtime, they'd go out of their way to search for another task even when my lunch was already cut to 20 minutes.
All in all, make sure you be mindful about how hard you work here. If you are a part-timer and plan on staying here full-time, then put in just the right amount of effort to get the work done. The moment a higher-up catches you putting in extra work, they will take advantage of your mentality and also your physical capabilities. As for summer-temps, this will happen regardless of whether or not you have the working mentality. Just grind it out, work hard, and make the best out of it. The work is tough. I'm a driver and he is absolutely correct about the complete and utter lack of communication at UPS. Drivers have it even worse in that regard.

I had my center manager cut my dolly lock stole my dolly and gave it to someone else then he lied to me about doing it I told him the dolly is company property but i paid $25 for the lock so i want my damn money...of course i didn't get it now he cant even look me in the eye smh so get on once you hit top pay you'll get about 1300 a week in TX but honestly with all the work and BS these morons put you through it still won't feel worth it

Look into Mr. Kellogg and 6hr shifts. There is nothing but massive efficiency drops after 6hrs, unless you're doing meth perhaps.
What we have is closer to the WWII Nazi Germany work enviroment. The fight for workers rights didn't end in the early 1900s. 40 he work week (which has origins in Nazi economics, not to mention the nation was pretty much methed out. Popular as coffee damn near)
40 he work weeks and 2 days off wasn't meant to be the victory but the beginning of workers making corporate fat cats know their place not in word but by action and labor.
I spent a year and a half at fedex. In that time i was a package handler, switcher, and ops administrator. I left the warehouse to be a driver. What this guy says is true. You show youre a hard worker your managers will exploit that and work you harder. Theyll send the lazy slow people home and keep the hard workers to pick up the slack. Dont get me wrong it was a fun job but its not for everyone. My first day i didnt even wanna come back for my 2nd.

I agree; however, If you are ADHD or ADD and find caffeine & sugar help you focus temporarily, you may want to consider Adderall. That caffeine and sugar are far worse, even long term.
For anyone complaining about ups now, as day shift loaders (10-3:30) we used to be forced to stay and work Twilight hours (3:30-8:30) as well with only a 10 minute break. The ice machines were broken in the summer and the nearest water station was a 5 min walk. The trick is to make them work for you! They are just boxes and you are only human. They can't make you load like a fast paced robot.
Great benefits and a $200 bonus just for showing up every day on time. you just gotta be tough.

That is incorrect; most drivers are hired within the company.

I work in a small hub and now you can get a driving job within a year or two. Best job out there without a college degree. You can make over 100k with ten to eleven hours a day. Health insurance included
I was being paid 15 dollars an he working at minimum 10 hours a day my longest day was 5 am to 8pm. I averaged 65 hrs a week.

As a fellow pre-loader for UPS I can confirm what this man says is true. It’s a very hard job that you need to put effort into but at the same time if you work to hard they will just keep piling more work on you till you can’t keep up so work at a steady pace don’t over do it.

I worked at UPS for 5 years and didnt think it was that bad. I loaded for 1 year and then was asked to go into the sort aisle because they liked my work ethic. Sort Aisle was CAKE and fun because you can literally talk the entire shift and call seniority (if you had any) to make the newer sorters do the messed up trailers or if you wanted to leave early the supervisors always asked you first. In other words if youre a badass in the sort aisle and handle your flow and know your union rights work is gonna be a piece of cake. For anyone whos thinking about working at UPS as soon as you get hired just grind out the hard work for the 3 months and ask to take the test for the sort aisle youll thank me later lol

@@arpthirteen6713 that all depends on the person. How fast can you learn the sort and if you can retain the info. It took me a couple of days to learn the sort and all the splits thats because Im a quick learner but that was me. People learn at different rates and retain differently

If you have no options in life UPS is a good job. Yes its very hard but like every thing in life it gets easier. If you are willing to work you can clear 50k a year easily. And all you are doing is picking up boxes and putting them down. If you are doing a good job they will approve almost unlimited overtime and sometimes come in on Sunday which pays double time. Again its not for everyone but if you don't have options in life this is the best route. Better than being homeless.

Power to you, my brother. Package handling is the worst job EVER! FedEx is no better. Trust. I loaded the trailers. Multiple ones. Worked the belt. Helped in other areas. Worked smalls. They worked the shit out of me and all the folks that worked hard. Busted my hand and it’s permanently jacked up because they handled the incident poorly.
The lack of communication must be in their training manual as a right of passage!
The dehydration is real. Comes from touching the boxes and you have to drink water! You sweat in the summer and worse in the winter because you have on two layers of clothes in those brutally cold warehouses.
Pat downs, security scans, shoes off, hats off to enter and leave. Dummies for managers. Nasty asses. Drunk and high folks who don’t show up on Saturday because they got paid on Friday. No regard for the job and the job has no love for you.
Unsafe conditions. Folks getting robbed, attacked and violated in the parking lot. Supervisors with the brain power of a fly flexing on folks old enough to be their mother/father...Just all parts of fuckery for the sake of greed. And don’t you dare question anything even in the most professional manner. For a lousy $200 a week, if that. Your body, brain and soul take a beating. 4am always got here too quickly. I would not recommend this shit to my worst enemy. But, if you go in with blinders on and not think about the bs, get your little change and go. Perfect for college students and a second gig to pay off a bill.

Damn, I just got hired at ups as a part time employee. Would have started this Monday, but was offered a full time position at a propane facility. Glad I was able to turn down the ups position. Now my only worry is burning to death.🔥

Man I use to work at UPS for about 8 months and he’s absolutely right about them over working the good workers. They’ll send the slow or lazy workers home first and have the people who work hard and faster to stay longer. And we didn’t get any breaks on the 4-9:30 shift. And most of the time we never got out at 9:30.
Hey man I totally agree with you. I also worked as a package handler for a company called Ontrac. It was the most miserable Job I ever had. Supervisors were disorganized, lazy employers would leave hours early. I remember on my 2nd day many package handlers called off and I had to unload a 18 wheeler all by myself. It took me about 5 hours to do. The other day I broke 15 pallets myself. Super visors did pick on me but only because they know i'll achieve their orders. I quit and felt so relieved.
I used to work there. Worked small sorts. Whenever we were done, they would force me to go to other areas and help out other teams. Problem was the managers would send their guys home and have me clean up their mess. one of the easier jobs to quit imo.

I am 38 years old, and have worked 21 different jobs since age 16. In my Life I have determined that the lowest paying jobs are always the HARDEST ones to work, and take the biggest toll on your body physically. This job sounds like it should truly pay DOUBLE what it actually pays. $22 - $23/HR would be more fair pay for this type of work in 2020. Especially if you live in a high cost of living area.
I'm 19. I've worked at UPS for 2 years and I've done hard ass bridge construction. The atmosphere on it's own is enough to make me prefer bridge construction. What gets me is UPS works based on it's new employees. They pay just enough to get the college kids in the door but not enough to be ethical.
Everybody is miserable at ups. I worked there as a second job. So it was an adventure for me.
The pretty painted trucks and super awesome UPS drivers don’t represent this company for what it truly is. I quit 6 months ago and could not be happier. Best of luck to you in your future career decisions.

I understand what you say about exploiting those that work harder. It's easier on the supervisor. I have seen UPS drivers in the neighborhood and can tell they are under a lot of pressure. When I worked for an airline as a cargo handler, it was a lot less stress than at UPS, but people would exploit those that cared about doing a good job. If there was cooperation it would be easier, but the lazy always say, "It all pays the same". Hope you are going to school.

These people abuse their workers, im about 2 months in and I AM DONE and im a pretty big guy I can do a lot of heavy lifting, i actually like working hard but at the speed and pace they want, IT IS NOT WORTH 15 DOLLARS AN HR. These people will literally work you until your broken, i hurt myself a few weeks back at the job and these dudes STILL asked me to come in, but one of the "higher up" managers seen i was uncomfortably in pain and sent me home ONLY BECAUSE THEY DIDNT WANT TO RISK HAVING TO PAY ME WORK MAN COMP or get sued if i got MORE hurt at the job. Dont get me started with the disrespect you get when your not a "TEAMSTER"(full time and in the teamster union). Them teamsters only take care of each other, so you will be put to sort the WORSE trucks with the WORSE unloaders ESPECIALLY if you the new hard worker they will rip you in half with the bullshit. Them teamsters will unload BULK 80lb boxes to your sort belt KNOWING thats a big no no(I no f*cks given in the world throw them to the small sort belt where only smalls go just to be a dick since they wanna be a dick) they just dont care for the new comers. All the new hard workers are told to come in 3 to 4 hours before the slow new comers and TEAMSTERS that dont feel like doing shit sorting one box per 20 seconds while texting on the phone or watching ESPN ZONE( remind you NEW COMERS are told no phones allowed which is total BULLSHIT). The new comers are the slack picker uppers, ESPECIALLLLYYY IF YOU PLAY THAT I WORK THE HARDEST CARD, they will abuse you they will only text you and tell you to come in at 2pm and everyone else(TEAMSTERS) walks in high off blunts and hennessy around 5 6pm and not have to do shit. They will call u to the hardest truck bays to sort while the TEAMSTERS pick n choose who or what truck they feel like going to. Theres a TEAMSTER chick on my sort belt thats the worse she literally dont touch shit and will let ALL the boxes come to you and the sort supervisors will flirtaciously say "you gotta sort something girl😉😊😋" with they simping asses(dudes at the UPS are the highest level of simps towards females so if you a new guy and you're smoove/handsome becareful brother the fellas will find you a threat in taking all they women and start doing salty shit to fuck your day up(SIMPS!). And then they gas some of the good hard workers up to be supervisors which is total bullshit too, they see you work hard so they try to suck you in with that shit, give you a UPS hoodie and have you feeling part of the team, then put you in "supervisor training"(which you cant leave early or call out BECAUSE THATS NOT WHAT SUPERVISORS DO RIGHT..💡💡💡🧠🧠🧠 they are pimping you) they are just having you pick up slack till they dont need you or you just simply say fuck this and quit......YOU'VE BEEN WARNED.
I lasted 3 months at fedex on the IC belt. hardest work I've ever done. my rotator cuff was almost shot by the time i left. not to mention extremely tense managers and coworkers.

I was that 10% bro I worked at the UPS Hodgkin location in Illinois. Oh my was I exploited all to hell after I watched this video. I would do some supervisor tasks such as open/close loads, at then end of the sort I would walk the belt and clean up or push down packages that didn't go through, and clean up my area. Then I'll move on to another location in the warehouse to reload up packages that failed to leave the warehouse to get resorted and I at first I volunteered just to get a little more hours and to show I was a good worker and eventually my "area supervisor" noticed me and labeled me as the "killer" of my area and then the main "head supervisor" got wind of me and then he made me come to reload packages everyday as some I have to do. So eventually I quit cause I was only 17 in highschool and I couldn't do it anymore after 9 months of working there.
It honestly sounds to me like you were a good supervisor candidate. I'm not sure what they were thinking in not pushing you to take the test when you turned 18. Lost opportunity for the company. Sorry to hear it worked out that way, but I'd be a liar to say I haven't seen the exact same thing myself. If you ever pick up any trades in the future, it might be worth looking into a specialist job with UPS, they tend to make some pretty good bucks without having to handle any package volume.

I can't cry or complain best paying job out there for not having a college education and if you are a hard worker there's no complaints hey if I wasn't happy then I would go work for half of what I get paid 23 years driving and I love it 😁 I'm blessed
I actually liked all of this guys videos until the closing of this one. If there's one advice you can take into consideration about anything you do especially a job and when you're starting, is give it your 110%.
Just watched part of the video. Brings back memories - I'll probably have nightmares tonight (LOL). Anyways, I worked reload-preload split shifts for years. Reload was 5:30pm to 10.30pm ish and preload was 4am to 9 am. This is back when preload made drivers wages and reload was a couple dollars less per hour. Made a ton of money.
Interesting video.. I just finished my first day as a preloader. 315 am to around 820 am. Didn't get ANY training, barring my 3 hour orientation and videos over a month ago..
A supervisor had me doing 2-3 trailers based upon how busy it was. I noticed the supervisors have awful communication skills. Splits suck.. hopefully they're not common. I got 15 at once had to sift thru my nearly full trailers to find them.. meanwhile the supervisor is watching the belt and tells me "oh, keep in mind you'll need to do watch the belt and do splits on your own eventually." Well, fuck.
They said I was doing great, but I don't respond well to praise because I'm a cynic and I don't want to be buttered up.

been at ups for abt a year and just got the bump up to fulltime nights. what ive learned. your paid by the hr, and there will always be another truck. take care of yourself and your body. its a physical job and a great workout, but not for everyone. im at 24/hr where i am so
Wow you had full 1 hour breaks? We get 10 minutes tops, and during Peak Season we get 20 minutes MAX despite working 4-6 more hours.

My mother works at a school cafeteria and she is probably the nicest lady working there (out of 11 women) and shes always telling us that her manager picks on her to do extra work the most out of all because she never makes a bad face or complains and is willing to help. Needless to say she is always extremely tired and still gets paid same as the other lazy women there. I wish there was an incentive like a raise to make people work harder and not just go for the paycheck. Im assuming you mentioned this "being too nice" thing because it happened to you while working at UPS?
It's definitely a thing. If you don't have a long-term goal with the company, you should not go above and beyond to exceed targets.

I started with UPS in March of 2017 as an unloader. Went straight to feeders and skipped package in May of this year. The job is easy as hell and if you drive everyday expect to gross 2000 plus a week and that's just starting out at the lowest rate. Being a part timer that went staright to feeders you'll be on call a bit before you get your feeder seniority. It's great though bro, get your CDL or CDL permit and sign the PT to FT bid sheet when it comes out and say you want feeders.

Ups destroyed my physical and mental health last peak. I worked at DFW and it was pure hell because the air hub facility was getting twice the load it was designed to handle. Working 12 hour shifts in the pouring rain and cold on the ramp. Quitting that hell hole was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

Man I got lucky then! I work at UPS that is in the airport. I work in the Ramp and its the easiest job I have ever had. 4-5 Hours, the pay now due to the new Contract is 13/h which is great for my state. Except for pallets that weight 4-10k pounds, the rest are easy to push due to rollers. I have my college paid, and recently there was an influx of young high schoolers-first time college hires like me which makes the day go faster with socializing. Great job! but when we randomly get pick for HUB DUTY! Hell that is literally hell.
Most of what is referred to in this video is specific to a hub. Air centers are generally cake-walk, though in colder states the inclement weather sucks.
It's a good part time job, I am currently in college, and it's the best money i can get where i live, I work there from May- August every year, and it brings in a lot of money to help me pay for college.

When I first started I was hired as seasonal with a chance to be hired on as a part timer. So of course after hearing about all of our benefits I wanted to stay there at ups. So I busted my ass to show I was worth keeping and after 2 in a half weeks they told me they were keeping me and to relax a little and let the other guys do more work so they could learn and earn their spot to stay, and it was all good until I got sent to help another belt. I impressed the supervisor from the other belt and he decided to get me switched over to his belt and every day he expects me to be 150%
In some cases I'll be loading the truck with another guy and I'll be loading 2x faster than the other guy but only I get yelled at to load faster. On days where we have heavy flow i gotta cover 2 trailers by myself and help other trailers when they get backed up and help out with bulk (either really heavy items that cant be put on belts or super long boxes, normally 70lbs and up) while still keeping my 2 trailers clean. Its crazy and I'm only getting paid minimum wage . Dont get me wrong I love this type of work because it's a workout but sometimes they want too damn much. Most of the times they dont send anyone to help me out when I get backed and instead I get yelled at to pick up the pace, but as soon as some else gets backed up guess who has to help out, you guessed it, Me.
Sometimes you even work 3=4hrs without any breaks.
I strongly suggest you don't work at ups if you're not willing to put your body through an intense workout 5 days a week.
A tip to keep you strong is just remember you're getting paid to workout, and keep checking yourself out in the mirror you start notice loss of weight and arms getting big
I'm a retired UPS driver..I retired at the age of 50. I have to agree it's hard physical work and they took advantage of me. It was worth it...9 weeks paid vacation awesome benefits my pension is off the charts. When it comes down to it these days you have to work your butt off to get ahead. If you don't they can easily replace you.

I have lasted at a UPS hub as a package car loader for eighteen years and I, kinda, liked the job most of the time when "logistics" were planned out well. The benefits were great but the management sucked because nobody has childhood dreams of becoming a UPS manager.
I sort, the raises aren’t like they used to be and I’ve considered supervision and driving as a result. But even as pt after 4 yrs your pension is locked in, and beyond twenty yrs that pension isn’t horrible. So even the pt positions aren’t as bad as some think. Although in-house logistics and communication has been lacking in my hub for a few yrs now. But I can make around 35,000 a yr without double shifts, which allows me to work in other fields and study bonsai in my free time. Even though we get tired sometimes, and have to deal with sub par management every now and then, at the end of the day I can’t complain too much. Although I don’t have kids lol
UPS is definitely off my job list...
I used to work as a loader from 11pm to 2am shift @ the Cerritos hub in California. I loved it for the first 18 months. Made a lot of friends, good pay, etc. Anyway, I went to HR to put myself on the drivers waiting list and she told me the wait time was 9 years. Yeah... thanks but no thanks.

Just got hired for preload (4:00am-9:00am) at the hub in LA. I'm moving to CA in 6 days and desperately need a job and they hired right away so that was awesome. I'm kinda out of shape so I'm lowkey nervous but I've been wanting to loose some weight so hopefully I'll be able to do that there lol

I work at UPS now and I became a part time Supervisor within my first two months and yeah I worked my ass off but not harder than other jobs I had before and they never even promoted me at all people it depends on what your going there for everyone don't have the same experience tbh you have to have a strong mind working here point blank and besides I only use this as a second job to earn 💰 and you should never head in a job not knowing what your getting yourself into no matter where you go to work ...
I’m 18 and weld, things don’t always align like they’re suppose to and I end up spending a lot of extra time that could be used for welding, to grind back or correct issues with fitment that wasn’t my fault, and can still end up with a fairly large gap to fill which also takes more time and I don’t cut the stuff out. The gist of what I’m saying is do what you can on your part, and shit sucks sometimes so just suck it up and do what needs to be done.
I been working there 30 years and have done it all at UPS . IF you don't like it QUIT!!! No one keeps u there. Life is. All about choices!! Go work at Fed Ex ..who cares go somewhere u are happy.
Y'all got to understand.. ups provides great benefits and great opportunities to move up. If you work hard your pay can go up like around 35$-50$. Alot other companies don't provide this. Just work hard, hard work pays off.

You have to work there for years to make that pay. Let's not mislead. Also it's all about seniority. If you have no seniority you are at the bottom.
It can take yrs to move to another position. Drivers after 5 yrs or more make this type of pay
UPS is a slave labor racist institution. If you stand up for yourself then you are a target. If you are a yes person you are awesome. Play it to your advantage. I've been there 3 yrs too long. I think I'm out at the end of this year.
I worked for preload for 3 years. Had 1 of the worst supervisors in the facility, went to my home town to be a driver and it was way worse. No union protection cost me the job pretty much, as the union stewart could care less because he was close to retirement.

Preload is the hardest job, physically next to delivery. I'm a delivery driver , and thank god its my last year. UPS is a meat grinder. Take care of yourself buddy.
I've been there 10 years as a part time employee, learn the contract language and tell them to EFF OFF when they violate them. Also I only work hard for managers/supervisors who have earned my respect everyone else gets a box every 3 seconds. I'm also a part time driver I frequently have to tell part time supervisors when they are about to violate dot/labor laws.

I "worked" at FedEx. After the week of training before going to work. I took the $400 paycheck and left. I drove out the parking lot blasting hustlin by Rick Ross ;)

I remember when I applied to ups and was turned out bad!!!She said u have the qualification s but u have felony s I was like I did mention that over the phone...and u said come on down a waist of my time and felt down cuz I needed a job bad... I see now it isn't such a great place to work... Now I work for myself and super happy; stressful but its rewarding.... I think u gotta make the best of it and stay positive
I'm 4 months in. I feel so good! I am so much stronger now it's crazy. At 9 months I get benefits that rival government employees or better. And pack a lunch brother. Boom!

Back on in 2000 I worked at UPS for 4 days at a major city hub. If you go to work there as a package handler, make sure you join the union. If you don’t want to, this job is not for you. I decided not to join the union because my thought was why pay for representation seems an outdated way in today’s US workforce. Unions were created in the industrial revolution... Boy was I wrong, those union people will f you over. Lied about fans not working, leave you alone to unload/load an entire trailer w/o help, etc. They will make your life miserable to get you to either join or quit. UPS is definitely not a company I would recommend to work at, simply because they let that shit happen. Find a better job, they are out there. Thanks for sharing your experience there.

Some 20-30 years ago they used to do a scanner and loader (or a checker and loader) in every trailer, but the advent of better scanners and industrial tech has made this somewhat irrelevant. Not everyone can handle the job, but it's a little strange that he'd make that point.
What it sounds like to me, is some supervisor had the bright idea to throw you into the fire in your first week, in one of the heaviest loads to decide if you can handle it or not. Sink or swim is definitely something I've seen training supervisors do. Consider that these people train a lot of new hires, and if you'd give up in one week you probably were going to waste their time in the first place. While I don't feel that way personally, many do.
As for the union, while they may act underhanded if you don't join (I don't personally have this experience), they are still negotiating your contract. I honestly think people should join the union, even though I'm a supervisor. It's ultimately your choice, but if you're going to work a labor job and refuse representation that's a little silly to me.

I’ve worked and managed many crews in this line of work.
Had a couple good supervisors and many bad ones. I could say the same for employees, but I always did what I could to get them to work up to standards and productivity. Not everyone’s output is the same and some people lose sight of that in the quest to meet quotas. But you still have to meet them either way.

I was the nice guy at my UPS. I started there a little over a year ago, would say yes to whatever my bosses asked because I figured that’s what was expected of me and I felt obligated being the new guy. Well now I have to go in early everyday to “set up” and then when everyone leaves I have to stay and “set up” again for the next shift. I’m basically the companies “bitch” I’m getting pretty tired of it. I work Monday through Friday doing local sort. I was working saturdays as well because my supervisor told me I had to. I ended up finding out I didn’t have to and it was optional the whole time. He lied to me. So I stopped coming in on saturdays. Now he picks on the new guys. He lies and tells them they have to work saturdays. I get so frustrated with UPS because the lazy guys get left alone while they play on their phones all day while the hard workers bust their ass and then have to do carry the weight of the lazy employees. That company is so backwards. I get paid the same as a lazy guy but I do way more work in the long run. I’m getting fed up to be honest.
