  • Part 1 - • Pros & Cons of Working...
    Detailing the Pros and Cons of working at UPS Part 1 is pros Part 2 is cons. This video should help answer the questions "Should I apply at UPS?" "Is UPS a good place to work?" "Good things about working at UPS" "Bad things about working at UPS"
    CONS
    1. Seniority-based - Everything is based on seniority
    2. The pay is Low - You might have a good starting rate depending on where you are but...
    3.Damage to your body
    4. Management is horrible - Shady business practices at times
    5. Horrible Coworkers - While you can meet the coolest people ever on the other end of the spectrum there are just some horrible people, bottom the barrel of society.

    The pension plan should be brought up in your pros. You can work here for 30 years and retire getting payed 2500 to 5000 a month. Depending on you part-time to full-time ratio. That's not including what you contribute to your 401k, Roth IRA and other retirement plans.

    I forgot to add, this is a very fair video IMO. Good overview. What I also found in my week was that I was getting the worst trucks on the line; stuff that was overbooked and the like. But I found most people to be very nice. I didn't hear a lot of bad stuff outside work and didn't see any drugs. In that job I'd expect somebody who was high or drunk to be ridiculously dangerous. If people like that were interfacing with me everyday, I'd walk off immediately. You won't get the chance after you are dead.

    The FedEx hub I’m at, (started in Nov. ‘18) have a full time job and it’s my part time job for the extra money and flight benefits. Thankfully you don’t have to be there a certain amount of time to move around if you want to. I think if you go into as you’re gonna make this insane amount of money you’re setting yourself up for failure. I’ve been approached by different areas already because of my work ethic, which will most definitely change my “day job” job to where that one may become my Part time job, after I get my CDL.

    I have been working at ups for a year and 2 months. But I find out that my coworker during the time gets overtime pay and he is a seasonal worker who just started working there. But when I started they told me that in order to get overtime pay I would have to work there for a year. They lied. Which they do a lot at the ups I work.

    I took a job in preload and lasted a week. I knew i was going to get injured. I never did any strength training and that is exactly what you need to load the trucks. I had been out of work for 3 years from a high paying programming and I was so old I thought I'd check out using this as an encore career. I still had about 8 years to retirement. It didn't take long for me to realize this would be a very hard climb. There must be easier jobs at this pay level.

    I worked as a casual driver last year. I was led to beleive I would be given a permanent position after the season. Amazon gave the shipping contract to USPS and they layed off a few people for a month or so so I know it wasn't BS..
    So I have been in contact with HR for this year. I could have taken many positions in the mean time in Orlando which always needs people. They are 45 minutes away and the local one for me is 15 to 20 minutes away but less turn over. They are building a new facility in another town and the local facility will lose routes. The key is they will be cutting down the routes at the local facility and create more jobs. I am waiting on the 14th of October to start the process.
    Hopefully they will send me again to integrad for training since I haven't continuously work they require me to go to it again.
    I am 52 and just want a secure job and an effing pension, which I was told is being taken away from management so I am trying to stay away from management positions.

      Casual Driver is one where you have to go through a week training program. You drive the brown trucks or Rental trucks such as u haul or Penskes if they dont have enough trucks.
      You are a problem solver, you are assigned pick ups . .you help get misleads and get them to the right routes also.

    Seems to me like it's best to look elsewhere for work for me at least. My dad worked at a shipping company for 40 years on the dock/yard (never knew the details honestly) and he has got a messed up body for sure, particularly his shoulders/back. Plus his company (Roadway) ended up hitting hard times around 8 years ago and most of the pension went away.

      dispatch is the most unthankful position, you're planning everyones "traces" or routes for the day if something goes wrong you have a lot of people knocking on your door yelling. I'm currently in class to become a package truck driver and we have a dispatcher from another center trying to get out and become a driver lol so to each their own i suppose, also i suppose it depends on the state/area you're in.

    Love the videos to be fare we should add from other employees.
    There are times supervisors can harass you which is a con and pro. Con because it sucks it makes your shift uncomfortable but pro because when or if they do you file a grevience and get paid double time for your trouble.
    Also I have been there about the same time as you and have not been hurt but I am 37 and am a fulltime landscaper so the work doesnt get the better of me. .
    The breaks do suck and keep in mind although we are union this is a corporate environment and acts as such so they care about the buck and only the buck as they should.

    I have to go to the interview in 30 mins. I have a full-time day job with benefits I just need some extra money. I see they have a night shift for a few hours. The application said no more than 20 hours a week. So that's doable for me if that is the reality of the job. I'm not afraid of hard work but there are levels too it. I'm not going to over do it. I will quit before I have serious back issues. We'll see how it goes.

Cause there union those warehouse workers have too be patient and work there way up seniority list which takes years or learn some new skills too help move you up faster and make more money.. but for retirement i think its a good job for that.. its a sustainable living comfortable not rich or anything but more then enough too get by if you know how too manage and invest your money properly..

    What UPS pays is shameful. And this is a union job...

    • @nero5896
      @nero5896 5 років тому +2

      What they pay the handlers is shameful. It's a pyramid scheme. All the feeder drivers and package car drivers are getting paid big bucks at the expense of the handlers not. And it's a pyramid scheme in that the handlers "think" they might someday get a driver job and make a ton more money, but most don't. They quit before an opening comes up. Yeah the handlers low pay subsidizes the drivers' high pay. I wouldn't join the union as a handler unless it was like $10 a month for the dues. I figure I would join the union once I'm a driver and getting paid a lot to make it worth dues fee.

      I can't wrap my mind around paying union dues for a minimum wage job. Little hours, low pay, and fast-pace physically strenuous work...for what? Just a little over $100 a week after paying my union dues. Nah bro, UPS is high as a kite if they think they can get away with that. That's worse than slavery you can't even pay your rent with that let alone eat or pay your utilities.

      @@SirKDUBS29 I'm talking specifically about package handlers. Do they pay $25.00 an hour for those employees? As far as my research has told me, they do not...Where medical is concerned, most people who are low-income can use the affordable care act (Obamacare) and get free medical through the state so that is a non-starter. What people care about the most is whether or not this job can provide them the financial ability to pay their basic living expenses. I'm not going to put my body on the line for a part time minimum wage job where I have to pay "union" dues.

    • @SirKDUBS29
      @SirKDUBS29 5 років тому +1

      @@hyperashitive3217 we if you make a wage that allows you to be able too provide all your living expenses them you may not be able to get welfare for medical. Part time work is just that part time. You need to work full time to provide for a household. Most package handlers work 2 jobs and a lot of times the 2nd job does not provide benefits so that's why UPS is vital to their families because your wife/husband./children can be on that plan. Only for 100 a month or so in un ion dues. The company is not for everyone but what a starting package handler cost UPS is over 25 dollars an hour because of the health benefits and retirement factored in. If you ask employees with children on teamster insurance would you rather have your benefits or make 25 dollars an hour and no benefits. 100 percent will choose benefits. Lastly, not everyone gets hurt. You will be sore some days but the job keeps you in shape more than it hurts your body. It's not for everyone but not all of us package handlers are not low income.

      Julius Adams yeah I believe all we get over here for worker’s compensation is 2/3rds pay which isn’t much to begin with. There is a short term - long term disability that’s like 60-70% of your pay but if your only working PT, making 300 bucks a week before taxes, your only getting a little bit more then your normal paycheck. Personally I left the union and moved up and out when I finished school. Now if I got hurt easily would be 3-4K a month. But back then no not even close.
