Detailing the Pros and Cons of working at UPS Part 1 is pros Part 2 is cons. This video should help answer the questions "Should I apply at UPS?" "Is UPS a good place to work?" "Good things about working at UPS" "Bad things about working at UPS"
    PROS
1.Union Join - Hard to get fired, Can’t get laid off, Other benefits of being in a union such as being able to transition to other jobs at other companies
2.Benefits - Good benefits and healthcare that you don’t have to pay for directly at least
3.Part Time - If you have other things going on like school or second jobs, its part time so it goes well with most schedules. Different shifts etc
4.Potential to move up - Its not quite a dead end job, you can do different things to get a pay raise, sorting, feeder etc. You can become a driver after a few years and make well over 60k a year with no education. Alternatively you can become a supervisor
5.If your introverted its good because you don’t really have to talk to people much. You are mostly alone throughout the days.
    6.Pay raises every year
7.You can meet some really great peop

You are no longer a union worker if you become a supervisor. I've been there 5 years and the smart thing to do is put in about 3 years and you can bid on being a driver. Feeder drivers make $40 an hour where I'm at in Cali I love my job

I worked as a security guard at UPS for a couple of years back in 1991. The only thing that you can be definitely fired for is stealing. You can fired for other things. If you do get fired, just file a grievance with the union and they'll get your job back. A shop steward said one employee was fired 13 times. High turn over rate among part timers.

Depends on what your goals are. If you want a better starting wage, and aren't determined to stay long, pick Amazon. If you want to be a grunt, and are willing to put some serious YEARS of hard back work in to rank up seniority and pay, go to UPS. There's definitely some tradeoffs. I made $5 more per hour starting at Amazon, but I didn't get union benefits. On the other side, I made $14/hr at UPS and had to pay a $200 initiation fee + 2.5x my hourly rate biweekly towards the union, but I didn't get any benefits til I hit 9 months. It would have taken me 5 years at UPS as a package handler to make what I did at Amazon as a new hire. But you get that Union protection and benefits though. So you have to outweigh the pros and cons. Also, Amazon had way more updated modern tech, heavy machinery, and automation to assist with the flow compared to UPS, where our facility was outdated from the 1980s, and nowhere near up to speed to accommodate a 2021 covid online marketplace economy. They just expect you to work harder at UPS since they don't want to spend the $$$ shutting down their centers and updating to new efficient tech lol.

Full time tattoo artist, 250 an hour plus tips and I work 8 hours a day minus weekends. I don't recommend UPS to most people unless they have a family and need health benefits or want to go driving. Part time work isn't really worth it, but man I've had these health benefits for so long I cannot let them go. Although I rarely work a full week. I'm incredibly lazy and try to get laid off as much as absolutely possible.

As long as you show up every day, do your job, be safe, you will have a good career here. Know your supervisors. Communication one of the most important parts to success here. Attendance is probably the most important thing other than safety, but Communication is up there because if you talk to your supervisors and don't abuse your lack of attendance, you're more likely to get time off. Secondly, you're more likely to advance if you talk to your supervisors. You want management or become a driver, talking to your supervisors is your fast pass to advancement. Pluses and minuses to go with management, but it can be a good fit for some. Many drivers make $100k per year and I hear pilots do even better. Peak season Thanksgiving to Christmas with over time hours you will make good money in any role.

I got hired on for peak, "part time" and temporary. The 15th of December to Christmas eve was rough, generally 10 hour days, but I didn't bat an eye at 20 an hour and OT after 5 hours. Found i enjoy the work, and my coworkers (supervisors included) are all actually really cool. Made a few friends, a nice paycheck, then didn't get laid off when all the other newbies did... I'm now permanent. The job schedule is great for me, with me pursuing a culinary degree. I know they pay for school, but I haven't talked to them about it.
Full benefits after 1 year, a strenuous but small work schedule, decent pay, and great coworkers... this I'm okay with. I can overlook the torrential rains of Seattle, the sore feet and muscles, when I know this is what I need to be doing at this point in my life.
Can't complain. My future lies in my dreams, and UPS is allowing me to pursue them better than a life-sucking graveyard job cleaning restaurant hoods that dead ends your pay at 16 an hour unless you're a supervisor, then you cap at 24.

  • @EddieLeal
    @EddieLeal 3 роки тому +1

Where I work as a UPS ramp agent our schedule is not set in stone. If there are any delays due to aircraft maintenance/break down you have to stay there with the aircraft until it is either repaired or all of the cans have been swapped over to another plane. Even if nothing is wrong with the plane you still have to stand by and wait until the plane has taken off and has flown out a certain distance before you are allowed to go. Some folks have had to stay anywhere from 2 to 3 hours past thier shift due to unloading/loading planes due to mechanical breakdown. So if you have another job you have to get to make sure you are aware this can happen. We get $14.50/hour

I've been working for UPS for 25 years. In my experience, there are more benefits in being in the union (Teasmters) than you would be in management. In my experience, management can terminate you automatically. If you are a Teamster, there is a disciplinary process aka your Weingarten Rights. In short, you can't get fired automatically. There are exceptions to these set of circumstances of course. But through my years of experience, this is what I've witnessed. I'm a proud to be a member of the Teamster Union.

My brother works feeder at UPS Grande Vista in Los Angeles. 10 years ago when my dad had dementia, my brother and his wife had my dad sign over all of his properties to themselves. My kids and I are about to become homeless because my brother and his wife took out a $350,000 loan on this house and never paid it back. My father bought this home in 1957 and this home was intended to be sold after his death and the funds distributed to my sister and brothers, and myself. New owner says that we have until June 6, 2019, to get out.

You go home when the flights go out. Even if that means working to 2-3am due to weather, maintenance. Now you definitely get OT, especially on Holidays.

Teamsters have sold out the members by forcing the latest version of a contract. My father retired after 30yrs in the 90's in Chicago. His pension was more than I was making working and health insurance until Medicare took over. He was 52 years old and still young enough to do a lot of things he often said the union was going to sell their workers out and that's why he took his retirement the current retirees aren't even getting what he used to get the company and the union are working together time to elect new leadership for the teamsters

I understand about working long hard hours. UPS will definitely wear you down. It's not for all. But if your looking to segue into other jobs with the company it seems like a good opportunity. My CDL instructor, years ago, worked 20+ years for UPS over the road. He made a pretty good living. However I see that coming to an end in 10 years or less. Theres a waitlist. When you sign up just ask how many years seniority the highest people on the list have. OR just use word of mouth at your hub. Ask fulltime supervisors or other union members. Wait times vary based on the hub you're at. You can also lower that wait time by being willing to drive for hubs. Example, Might take you 8 years at Worldport but in the next city over they'll take you in 3 years.
