    I know the garage door opener instructions say 6", but It seems to me that the sensors should be mounted higher, perhaps 10-12" or so from the floor, in case your car happens to be sticking out a few inches too far making the sensors shooting the beam freely underneath the bumpers, sending the door down onto a bumper or trunk lid. I'm assuming the instructions say 6" to protect perhaps a small animal, but as rare (if not impossible) as that would be, I'd rather protect the car. Thoughts anyone?

    Nice video! I had a couple of questions. Does it matter which side the sender and receiver are on? Also, does the wire w/ the stripe get connected to the positive or negative terminal on the controller? Thanks in advance for your help!

    • @garagedoorgenius
      @garagedoorgenius  11 місяців тому +1

      Hey, I really appreciate the positive feedback!
      For your first question, it does not matter which side the receiver sender is mounted.
      For your second question, the white wire goes into the white terminal in the black wire goes into the black terminal up at the machine. They have them color coded to make it easy.

      @@garagedoorgenius I wired the sensors right at the controller so I could test while taking the whole alignment issue out of the equation. Regardless of how I wired them, I couldn't get any lights. Either I fried them, or they're defective (they were cheap knockoffs). I'm picking up some authentic Chamberlain sensors later today. I have a BuildMark system and the power connections are white and grey. The grey being the positive side. Any suggestions?

    • @garagedoorgenius
      @garagedoorgenius  11 місяців тому +1

      I see. The build mark brand may not be compatible with Chamberlain equipment. It's like genie sensors will not work on a Chamberlain LiftMaster and vice versa.
      You may have to go with that particular brand safety sensor.

    • @garagedoorgenius

      For sure! It also helps when you get a call back for a safety sensor and you see that that wire has been disrupted that means something caused that. and you can physically show the customer hey something hit this to cause your problem. So that way it's justified and you don't go out there and not get paid! and also it looks nice and clean and neat just like you said.

    Thanks for this video. You say that 5-6" is standard placement above the ground. I noticed that when my car wheels straddles the beam (beam is between front set of wheels and back set of wheels), there is a possibility that at that point, garage door could come down if my wife uses her remote in the other car (we share the same garage door). It is okay to mount the sensors higher?

    • @garagedoorgenius
      @garagedoorgenius  3 роки тому +1

      You can mount the sensors anywhere you like. Just remember if you go to move out of that property put them back down 1 to 6 in from the floor. Or it will fail the inspector check.

    Think I have a bad wire. Tested new red sensor that wouldn't light up by connecting on Green sensor side and sensor lit up. I assume I have a bad wire on one side that is in the wall. I tried cutting the ends to make sure it just wasn't a dirty end but no dice. Also check to make sure connection on motor unit (ceiling) was secure and it is. I can see where wires go from ceiling motor unit thru ceiling. If u agree its a bad wire, what would be the best way to run a new one?

    • @garagedoorgenius
      @garagedoorgenius  7 років тому +1

      ALLAN FISCHLER
      Well the easiest would be just staple the new wire externally. Up the jamb, across the header, back to the powerhead. Easy peasy.
      Or if the old wire will pull all the way through without snagging, tape the new wire really good To the end of the old wire and pull that sucker all the way home.
      To keep it not visible and run a new wire in the wall you would have to use a fish tape. Electricians use those for that purpose. But it can be tough to do.

      You can test for an open circuit by wiring one end of the wire together, then checking for continuity (0 or very low resistance) with the two leads at the other end. If you don't have a voltmeter you could use a flashlight, with the wire completing the circuit. You can test for a short circuit by doing the same thing, but without wiring the ends of the wire together.

    I would put those plastic plate covers in the wall to hide the wire and make it look clean.. thanks for the video sir.. oh and is it a big of a deal to replace all the wire for the new one? does it take hours? because I want to re wire my garage and I am still thinking about it hehehe

    • @garagedoorgenius
      @garagedoorgenius  4 роки тому

      Garage door guys don't supply those white covers. That's normally for the finish out guys. On some new construction they put those on there from the get-go. I don't understand why they don't put them on there when they run the wire.
      Yeah running new pre-wire can be a daunting task. I would definitely heavily research it or hire an electrician. I know a fish tape works really well when you're trying to route a wire.

      Ok, 3 wires coming out of the ceiling.
      I always search for the Wall button wire first. How I do that is. Pick a wire strip it down. The colors you used at the Wall button, take that wire and use those colors. Plug them into the red/white in the opener. If the Wall button doesn't come on, then that's the wrong wire. Try the next... You have 3 chances. Sometimes you get it on the first try.
      Once you find the Wall button, the other 2 wires are for the sensors.
      Hope this isn't to confusing. Lol

    Thanks. my biggest question is how to determine what color wire matches what. My prewire is just white and white. no differentiation. Does it matter?
    Second thing is how to know the safety sensors work. I guess that's in some other video...

    • @garagedoorgenius
      @garagedoorgenius  3 роки тому

      If your pre-wire is white and no differentiation it'll be a little more difficult. But you can do it.
      I would first track down the wire for the wall button. It will be a trial and error kinda thing. Once you locate the wall button. Then the same with the sensors. Just stick one pre wire at a time. Try to find the (orange LED) sensor first. The green LED won't come on without the orange being on first.

    • @JasonTorpy
      @JasonTorpy 3 роки тому +2

      @@garagedoorgenius thanks for the quick response. I didn't get that at all. The prewire goes from the sensor to the machine. I'm sure you know that, but that's what I see. I actually just got it working (open and close and stop when it's supposed to) now the one that faulted out the first time has no light again. (these are replacements). I think the wire must be bac somewhere else. I'll probably recut and retie the wires on that side... we'll see if I just crimped it badly.
      side question - are those sensors pretty forgiving or do they have to be lined up perfectly? It's a little frustrating to troubleshoot when I can't see the light...

    • @garagedoorgenius

      @@JasonTorpy sorry I missed this comment yesterday. Sensors don't have to be exact to light up. They got a pretty decent read range. Meaning, they can be a little off. Pre wire can sometimes get pinched somewhere in the wall or in the ceiling. That could be your issue possibly.
