This video will show you how to replace the sensors when they are not working. If your garage door motor light flashes 10 times and does not shut, this should help you.
Please contact me with any questions or feedback.
Thank you for the video. Checking the wires by the motor did the trick.
@@Cheyenne9663 yup! That’s the most common issue!!
You had the best video out of like 10+ I've watched.. saved me lots of time on the install of my sensors. Thanks!
Earl B thanks!! I made it after seeing like 10 videos that didn’t help me at all 😂
I’m glad I was able to help you!
@@aaronfixesstuff By having me hook the sensors up to the box by the motor saved me time to make sure the sensors would work and what the wire polarity was. I discovered by watching your video that I had to reverse the wires. Again worked perfect.. Thanks! Earl
great job brother, I am glad to find this easy to fix situation. Keep up the great work!
Dude! You saved me a ton of time with that test, THANK YOU!
Thank you for making it simple and direct. You saved us sensor cost.
Glad to help!!
Easily the best video on the topic. Will be checking out your other videos. Thanks
Thank you so much! I really appreciate the feedback!!
Super helpful thank you for this video. Sometimes I just need a clue, and you provided that here. Even though my sensors were on, they were not working. A quick trip to Lowes for the replacements and I'm back in business!
That is the exact purpose of my videos, so I’m happy I was able to help John!!
Thank you Aaron for the great video, your tips helped me a lot few days ago in troubleshooting and replacing my garage door sensors. Great Job!!!
Thanks for taking the time to say that Shelvin! Much appreciated:)
Hi Aaron - Great tips on testing the sensors first - We just happened to have a non-direct lightning strike in our front yard which took out some electronics (i.e. the GFCI outlet for the door opener). Door now exhibiting bad sensor symptoms and codes - Both sensors have no lights - Will check replacements ahead of time and if not the problem (can return them) may be time for a control board - Anyway thanks for the tips !!
@@montijl thanks! I’m glad you found the tips to be helpful!!
I just want to thank you very much I fixed my garage door opener and saved a bunch of money
That’s the best feedback you could give!! Glad it helped you out!
Really good explanation of the sensors and how they're installed! I already figured out most of this while trying to troubleshoot my garage door opener having this problem last winter. But in my case, the orange and green lights on the two sensors were always lit. Apparently, it got cold enough to cause one of the sensors to malfunction anyway, because without touching anything, it just started working properly again a couple days later. Now, the problem re-appeared and again, the sensors appear to be working (can block one and watch the green light go out, etc.) -- but the opener thinks they're always reporting obstructions. I replaced one side and had the same issue, so will replace the other sensor tomorrow and hoping that fixes it. (At this point, if it doesn't? I'm thinking the opener itself has something wrong on its internal circuit board!)
Finally after months I fixed my garage door with your help. Testing the sensors helped me figure out the problem. Thanks for the great video.
I ordered the same sensors and for some reason the manufacturer color coated the wires backwards. I realised that when i was testing them out.
Hey Matthew. I am glad the video helped you out. Thanks for taking the time to comment, feedback is always greatly appreciated. Happy new year!!
So helpful! Thank you!

Dude, great heads up on plugging them in first before all the wiring. Sounds simple and a complete no brainer but I would have 100% ran all the wiring and has them all set up before I went to try them. Luckily I’m pretty sure this is my issue but either way would potentially have saved me a massive headache. Good lookin’ out.
Thanks! I try to give helpful tips on all my videos, based on things I’ve learned over time. Much appreciated and thanks for taking the time to comment :)
@@aaronfixesstuff no problem dude! Thanks for commenting back!
Awesome job! I suggest to spray WD-40 on all the moving parts of the door itself for better performance. 👏🏻
awesome. Question. My wiring to the sensors have a red along with the white and black wires. Will a universal sensor with just the blk/wh wiring work? Thanks.
Thanks for this video. You say that 5-6" is standard placement above the ground. I noticed that when my car wheels straddles the beam (beam is between front set of wheels and back set of wheels), there is a possibility that at that point, garage door could come down if my wife uses her remote in the other car (we share the same garage door). It is okay to mount the sensors higher, especially if there are no pets or children at the home? I'm more worried about accidental damage to the car.
Technically they can be mounted at whatever height, as long as they are both at the same height, facing each other. I just mentioned that, as that is code.
Do different brands have different color wires to sensor etc.
This has saved me a big repair bill. My only question is how did you attach the old wire to the new sensor? Did you strip them and attached with wire caps?
Awesome! My channel is all about saving homeowners money!! That is exactly right, good job!
I did the replacement, but part of the garage door is rubbing against the back part of the clips. It looks like as the garage door goes down, it shifts slightly and the bolt that holds the cable at the bottom of the door rubs against the 2 flat part of the clips. The original mount was using one screw to hold the bracket to the rail. I can't mount it to the wall because the clip is not long enough. I have it temporarily on top of a can near the door. Any thoughts?
Good job but I have a question , my sensors are not working and don’t have a light on them I checked the wire and used a tester for the electricity and there is no power. What would I do in this situation?
Aaron, is the wiring different than connecting speaker wire? It normally would be white to white and black to black, but it almost looks like you went white to black and white to black. Did I see that correctly?
Question 🙋♂️ Is it necessary to kill power to the whole house or as long as the main motor is unplug is that enough ?
I bought new sensors, connected them directly to the back of the motor(both white wires to white input, and both black strip to black input), but neither sensor lights up. I have decided to send the sensors back in hopes that they are bad sensors, but what else could the issue be, bad control board? My garage door started malfunctioning after a lightning storm, the green receiving sensor went out, but the transmitting sensor stayed on. Seems weird that I didn't get any signal(light on) out of the new sensors by directly connecting them, even though my old transmitting sensor still lit up...
Mine did the same thing after a lightning storm. Both sensors went out, placed them with no luck.
Do you need to split the sensor wires to connect them to the terminals? Can you share a picture of the terminals? Thank you !
Aaron,
I replaced both of my sensors today. Initial issue was receiving sensor would not light up. Now neither have a light on. Totally baffled by this. Can you lend some advice?
I have Guardain garage but sensors don’t work. Can replace with a different brand sensor or I have to find the same brand?
I ran my wires down behind the drywall into a outlet box then got a blank cover and put a 1/2 in hole in it then wired the sensors and stuffed the extra wire into the box. much cleaner looking but that is me.
I just replaced my sensors. Lined then so that both lights are steady on. But the moment the door goes up, the green light starts flashing, and therefore won't go down. Any ideas?
My Receiving Eye stopped working. It was a faulty capacitor in the C1 position on the motherboard (10V 470 uF). I soldered in a new capacitor and it worked great. Did that in Jan.2018, and the capacitor failed again today ☹️
That really sucks. Maybe it’s time for a new motor :(
Think of it as a gift to yourself!
Nope. I will install a new capacitor that costs around $2.00. If it doesn't work, it's time for new sensors. A pair of them costs about $30.00CAD on Amazon.ca
Don't buy cheap chinese capacitors. Get you some Nichicons.
great video but, do you know what voltage has to be where the sensors are connected??, I would like to make sure the sensors are the problem and not the board.
If the sender LED is on its getting voltage
Great video. I have a pre 1997 craftsman motor 1/2 HP. Will these work? Can you share link to where to buy? Thanks
I am not sure honestly. Sorry I can’t help you with that. I bought those at Home Depot. Maybe the description there says if it will work?
Likely you have the old style like he showed in the video so you will have the same situation like him - meaning you will need to replace the brackets as well.
Thanks for your video. I have my sensors lights solid but still Garage does not close. It rewinds back when tried to close. Also, when closing, the Chamberlain motor does not flash, it is solid . Tried to test the sensors, as the way you connected with system and it is closing properly. But when i placed them back in the Garage door positions, it rewinds while closing. Any suggestions please.
Just to make sure. When they are in the garage door position, is the green light on? Also, does the amber light stay on?
@@aaronfixesstuff Yes, Green light is on and Amber light stay on. Thanks for your reply.
If I replace my sensor. Do I need to re program
One sensor has solid green light, but other sensor has no light at all. The sensors are properly aligned. I've traced wires back to motor and it appears to be no breaks. Do you think it's the sensor that isn't showing any light (orange color LED) the issue?
It sounds to me like the other sensor is not working ( the one that is not lighting up). I recommend buying a set, and follow the steps on the video. I show how to test them before securing them to the door.
Tested sensors as you said & neither light turned on. The old set had only the amber light on & the green light no longer was working. Any suggestion?
If neither light is going on, you might not have connected them right. Also when you connect the new ones, make sure they are facing each other with no obstructions.
What would you do if you have two sensors with green lights. One has a steady green and the other keeps flashing? Mine is a Sears Craftsman. If I have to replace sensors, can I use any type? Where would I get them?
If its flashing then try re-aiming them. You can use the newer type like he does in the video but then you will have to replace the bracket also.
@@barackobama5304 Thanks, I actually figured it out and it was a button that was pushed on the main unit that I guess was blocking the remotes from use. Just had to push the button and all good.
How did you attach the new wires to the old wires .. what did you use?
I just used wire nuts.
You have one sensor with a yellow light and one with a green light. Witch one is the sending one and witch one is the receiving one?
Great question. The amber colored one is the sending one. The green is the receiving. Keep in mind that if there is an obstruction, the green light is the one that will turn off.
Thanks
thanks
but if both sensors light are correct ,red &green but the door not closing ,what to do?
geniusbboy does the door start going down and then go back up? Does the light on the opener flash?
I have the same problem, what I need to do?
If it is not the sensor what else would cause that issue.
Do we have to turn off the electrical breaker off?
Unplugging the garage door opener is always a smart idea.
Can you dismantle the sensors so that you won't have any issues?
I would not recommend doing that.
Why are the sensor's mounted so low? The light will catch the tire/wheel, but does not sense the body overhangs on each end of the vehicle. Suv's and PU's have long overhangs.
Sensors are not supposed to be mounted higher than 6”.
@@aaronfixesstuff I understand that the regulation says that, but it does not address the issue of body overhang on both ends. Why not install two more up higher to address this?
How do you connect to the motor to see if they work first ?
I see where you show that thanks.
Can you use any sensor to replace an old one?
I am not certain, but I’m pretty sure they have to be compatible with your motor manufacturer.
Just replaced mine but there is only light on one side…does that mean I need to switch out the wiring?
It can be several things. Not aligned, blocked sensor, needs to be replaced, or something else.
@@aaronfixesstuff I’ll try your tip tonight to wire the sensors directly into the opener. Thanks! If it does turn out to be the wiring and not the sensors do you know what type/where I can find the proper wire?
This is a video so do show instead of describe via text. In this case, what is the OPENER BUTTON?
Where did you get a new sensor?
You can buy them at your local hardware store :)
I tried hooking new sensors to motor , still no power to sensors...any ideas ?
Time for a new motor
My frustration is I have a brand new opener system installed by the pro. The sensors have already replaced once and now they are not lighting up again. I'm very lost..Any one please help me
Did you make sure that they are still aligned and that there is nothing blocking the path between the sensors?
@@aaronfixesstuff absolutely nothing, my garage is pretty empty.
@@vincentlu36 it might be a problem with the motor then. But I’m not sure.
I already replaced and put new sensors and still won't work.
Might be the control board on the garage door opener. Might have to replace it.
Would be nice if you didn't skip steps because they may be too basic for most. LIke how to connect the old and new wires together with those round things that has 3 places to insert the wire. I'll need to go elsewhere to find out how to insert the wires.
Did you figure it out? What is that called lol?
Nada
Both of my eyes are working showing they see each other but garage will not close
People watch UA-cam videos for such matters to watch you replace the sensors not to hear you yak endlessly and point to distant, abstract, out of view locations in the garage.
Can I use new garage sensors on old garage motor but they are both Craftsman
You sure can:)
That’s what I did in the video.
