Yea, that HDMI port issue is pretty weird. But, for me, I would most likely use the R50 as a travel / vlog / or UA-cam camera. Which the flip out screen would be fine for the most part. I still keep my eyes on Canon cameras because they provide great skin tones. But, the fact that Canon only allows 3rd party manual focus lenses, is still a problem for me. Question: I was outdoors in direct sunlight, but I was not shooting video - primarily photos. I am using a 70 - 200 mm lens for sports photography. I never once shot any video, and it overheated. What are your thoughts on this? I've never experienced it. And again, I was in direct sunlight. Thanks in advance.
Yeah, depends onwhat you're doing. I think camera on, HIGH LIGHTS for better LCD contrast on your screen. Having the shutter constantly trying to focus something.... Makes senses it heats. Try not to use the LCD screen (armor mode) and I think it may solve your problem or having the SCREEN to turn off after a couple of seconds instead of always on
On that HDMI port location: what's crazy is that the Canon R8 (the camera I use) isn't much bigger than the R50, yet it does not have the HDMI port on the grip side, rather the side opposite of the grip. Contrarily, it makes using the side ports harder if flipping out the built-in screen to use while vlogging. I haven't yet used my R8 for vlogging, but it is something I want to try. Obviously the R8 is a higher-end camera relative to the R50, but still.
The R50 uses LP-E17, which doesn’t have fully decoded 3rd party variant available. Only Patona has fully working version, but that has been sold out for months now :(
The lack of a wide angle lens (wide to at least 20mm 35mm equiv.) makes it nonstarter for me for vlogging. If Canon will come out with a RF-S 10-18mm for it would fix this.
deal breaker: not having a usable hot shoe right out of the box. i went for the R100. same picture quality, same kit lens, and a functioning hot shoe to use with my SpeedLite 270ex. (the entire reason i bought it was to use a flash. and if I need an adapter, then no bueno) EDIT: where did you get that tripoid? i need it.
Great video! Subbed :) I was looking at the SL3, then I noticed this R50 - 1. do you think the R50 is good for beginner real estate? 2. what lens do you recommend adding for wide angle? Cheers!
It doesn't change my mind about getting this for my hobby use. As a sound guy I work along side loads of camera personal but if I was a pro camera operator who wanted a budget b camera for additional angles this would be a deal breaker for me, since its not a workhorse.
I just added thermal pads inside of mine. I got the full 1 hour at 4k 24gps with only 3 bars on the heat gauge in a 72-74 deg f room. Battery died before I could run it longer. Gonna do more tests tomorrow. I just did this mod today

Hi there! Loving your Canon R50 content and loving your channel in general. I know the sigma 16mm rf mount is coming, but what are some other good budget lens options for video background blur on the R50?
Except the overheating, can you use the camera while it s connected to power? Like, when using it as a webcam, can i have it connected permanently to a source of power? Does it affects the camera in a way or another?
Yes. You can either use a dummy battery or power it with usb c power delivery. I use it as a Webcam with a dummy battery and it can be used indefinetly, as long as it doesn't overheat, but at 1080p it really won't.
Hi, I am a newbie.. can you help me so to choose which lens I should buy? I want to buy the Canon R50, but I don't know which lens I should buy. I need to do manly photos to my family.. so for example to a person (bokeh effect) or to group of persons. Which one of these lens you recommend to me? 1) CANON RF-S 55-210MM F5-7.1 IS STM 2) Canon RF 50mm F1.8 STM 3) CANON RF 24MM F1.8 MACRO IS STM 4) Canon RF-S 18-45mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM
Most of the heat in cameras comes from encoding while it writes to the SD card, so probably not an issue as a webcam, but I don’t own one so I can’t say for certain.
When using as a Webcam in 1080p in a 70*F room, it showed 1 bar on the temperature gage after over an hour. This was with a canon battery installed, so it added heat. I don't think it would overheat at all at 1080p 60fps even unless you were in a hot climate in direct sunlight.
Also, very small grip, very few buttons and dials (exactly as M50; but Canon's great touchscreen interface makes up for that partially). And atrocious photo buffer. All in all, pro's that want a tiny Canon camera to use (and that won't get an RP or R8 for that purpose) will get the R10, simply the cheapest Canon that is great at usability (joystick at that price point is a killer feature). However, comparing with how junk the 2000D and 4000D are (don't ask me how T8i or Tsi etc. b.s. naming scheme for the US they were called...) and with the earlier low-tier M models, there is still room in the Canon APS-C RF range for entry-level: a camera with a fixed screen and/or, no viewfinder, low build quality, (worse sensor?) and lower price.
I think the R10 is great as a second body, while the R50 is great for first time mirrorless owners! I would honestly be surprised to see a lower priced R mount camera. I’ll be pumped if it does happen though!
Dude I love your content and passion keep it flowing. You’re also really cute and handsome hehe 😉 Do you offer any photography classes I’ve been wanting to dive more into it and create my own UA-cam channel as well. You’re an inspiration! Thanks
3:24 they didn't though, if they needed a little extra room on the other side they could have accounted for that by using a slightly bigger chassis. Nothing needs to get so small it impacts usability. Also not wanting others to make autofocus lenses? Looks like market manipulation to me.
I think these issues you are discovering are for a more advanced camera user… Because for the things that I’m trying to accomplish, these don’t seem to be major issues to consider. If you’re just a beginner and one to learn more about filmmaking or photography… I think this camera is perfect and all of those issues really aren’t something that you should consider before purchasing.they won’t really have a major affect on you
I also bought the Canon R50 with the 18-45 mm lens but the lens cannot be completely retracted so it cannot reach the completely closed original position. I don't know if my description was understandable but is that normal or is my lens broken?
Thank you for the video. I have been a Canon user for decades and have shot analog with Canon and EF lenses, later digital and most recently I had my beloved Eos 6D and M50 as a replacement. Slowly I wanted to switch to a new camera and the more I inform myself, the more I realize that I can no longer use 90% of my lenses (including 24-70, 70-200 from Tamron) as well as my flashes or studio adapters.... So either buy everything new or stick with the old cameras. Thank you Canon !
You can use ANY lenses that are EF or EF-S mount with these cameras (including 3rd party lenses), if you use the EF to RF adaptor. He is talking about RF mount 3rd party lenses specifically. And as of April 2024, 3rd parties are now allowed to make RF lenses, (for APS-C so far anyway). Sigma have a few on the way, and Tamron has at least one coming. You can use 3rd party flashes with the new hotshoe just fine to, specifically Godox anyway, which may just require a firmware update of the flash or transmitter.
@@beerbaron3003 I have a lot of old equipment. For example 24-70 and 70-200 2.8 G1. Both great lenses and more than sufficient for my purposes, but as far as I've read in various forums, they don't work even with an adapter. There are also many older flashes (especially with an old hot shoe) and they work perfectly, but even there I need an adapter which makes everything "bulky". So as far as I can see at the moment, I would have to replace a lot of lenses, flashes etc. (which I have bought over decades) if I switched, which on the one hand as a hobby photographer would blow my budget and on the other hand would be anything but necessary because they work and deliver great photos.
Yeah, canon has talent in small things that can annoy you. Im convinced canon really doesn't wanna release a mid range camera without any issues. The hot mount shoe thing is just frustrating considering you were using a 800d or 77d and you're looking to up your video footage while still using flash accessories for photography.
So what you are saying with Canon's new hot shoe, we cannot use external monitors or microphones without spending ANOTHER $40-$50 on their new hot shoe attachment??? 😠
The R50 is a starter camera. Which means you most likely don’t have a lot of accessories so if you want a external flash buy the EL-5 or the newly announced EL10
I appreciate your videos. Great content and information. Ive been trying to decide between the R50 or the zve10. Will be used primary for short videos, short content, and social media. What are your thoughts between these 2?
Solve the HDMI "problem" with a cage+grip. This year Canon is starting slowly to allow 3rd party lenses. If you're buying this camera for 4K, don't. Unless you're doing small 15 min clips and letting the camera cool down. 3rd party batteries need to be decoded so you can charge them. If the battery can't be charged by Canon charger, it won't charge on camera either.
Just bought the DM-E100 microphone and I'm trying to use it on my Canon EOS R50 but I plug it in and I get no change in audio, and the windscreen says "disable" why's that?
To your viewers. If the USB charger doesn't work with a third-party battery, it's because the circuitry and engineering design of the inner workings of that third-party battery does not work with the Canon USB charger. THAT A WARNING FOLKS. Check it out if you don't believe me. There have been many YT videos that have shown a plethora of problems with third party batteries. There's a reason why they are cheaper and it's because of the short-cuts to "safety" and "performance" that allow third party batteries to be cheaper are risks you don't want to take with your expensive camera. Do NOT cheap out on your batteries. Bite the bullet and purchase authentic Canon batteries which are designed specifically to work with your camera and NOT to do any damage - like some of these third-part batteries have been known to do. (This is coming from someone who is on a budget and always looks for deals, but third-party batteries are not one of those items you want to fool around with. Trust me.)
Hi I am on a search for a camera for getting started in photography, I've never owned a mirrorless camera before and just wanted something that will take good pics, decent videos, etc. Would you recommend this camera? Or would you recommend something else?
for the every day average joe that likes to take pics and a few video's the "little" canon is very cool.....good points tho, maybe you should trade it for the R10!
The R mount isnt a problem for R50. You can always adapt cheap EF lenses and they will work like a native lens will. You dont need to buy overpriced lenses for this camera
I think they assume since the camera is small anyway and alot people (especially with big hands) have complaints about their entire hand not fitting on the grip that most people who mount additional hardware to the camera body would most likely be using some sort of tripod mount grip or something for better stability holding the camera, since the grip is small and not very good for people with big hands. So maybe thats why they designed that part so stupidly lol Also because its marketed toward beginners who probably don't have and wont invest thousands of dollars in 3rd party flashes lenses and everything else a pro photographer would need. Than it doesn't really hurt the consumer to make the components propitiatory. As someone who has no camera gear myself and are just looking for a good video camera on a budget none of these issues are a deal breaker for me especially since I only want something slightly nicer than a powershot for when i go hiking to take pictured of the woods n stuff. However If I already had all different accessories and needed to work long hours recording I def wouldn't get this and get maybe something more high end and more compatible with industry standard equipment. This video was very helpful and informed me about the different types of intentions certain cameras are designed for, thank you.
In my opinion, if you will mostly use it for photos the R50 is the best option. Built in flash, EVF, faster burst rate. If you mostly record video, you really can’t go wrong either way. I would mostly consider which lens system you would rather get into.

does the zv e10 not having a viewfinder a dealbreaker for u? cause I'm honestly torn between getting the r50 or the zv e10 but I'm leaning towards the r50 bc of to me a viewfinder helps me capture images/video better
@@musicloevr I have the same problem right now, deciding between those cameras. If the zve 10 just had viewfinder, that will be my choice.
@@3komodo exactly :”)
Try not to use the LCD screen (armor mode) and I think it may solve your problem or having the SCREEN to turn off after a couple of seconds instead of always on
@@ronaldtejada8846 Thank you. I will keep those tips in mind. 😀
Just use an adapter, you can use your old ef lenses. No issues.
Just picked one up as a “back-up” to my R5 and R6 Mark II because of compact size and light weight. Go the new Sigma 10-28mm f2.8 to go with it!
Cannon eos r50 Vs sony alpha6400.which one is best
For batteries, try Neewer LP-E6NH replacements. Canon R cameras identify them as genuine and will charge them using USB C PD.
The R50 uses LP-E17, which doesn’t have fully decoded 3rd party variant available. Only Patona has fully working version, but that has been sold out for months now :(
@@KoenKooi Ah, ok, makes sense.
Can you film video and charge at the same time with this camera? Eliminating the need for a dummy battery?
You should try using these cameras when you’re left handed.
As a beginners camera frankly 99% of buyers won’t use an external monitor
The lack of a wide angle lens (wide to at least 20mm 35mm equiv.) makes it nonstarter for me for vlogging. If Canon will come out with a RF-S 10-18mm for it would fix this.
Sigma now makes a 10-18mm f2.8 to use with this camera. Just got mine!
Great stuff, thanks. Especially was looking for real world on the overheating claims... and 1 hour limit/shutdown, restart...
deal breaker: not having a usable hot shoe right out of the box.
i went for the R100. same picture quality, same kit lens, and a functioning hot shoe to use with my SpeedLite 270ex.
(the entire reason i bought it was to use a flash. and if I need an adapter, then no bueno)
EDIT: where did you get that tripoid? i need it.
Can godox trigger be put on the r50?
Is the overheating still an issue?
Great video! Subbed :) I was looking at the SL3, then I noticed this R50 - 1. do you think the R50 is good for beginner real estate? 2. what lens do you recommend adding for wide angle? Cheers!
you can use adapter with auto focus with 3rd party lenses
Overheating is a major topic reviewers MUST cover. I regret buying sony a5100 as my FIRST camera then realizing it wont shoot for more than 20 mins.
@@dbuckfanplays7991 can you run the camera on powerbank? Did you not void your warranty?
@@prathamshenoy9840 I'm sure it's possible but no sticker on void warranty was removed or damaged. Yes there are power banks that can be used. Anyone with a PD rating I believe
If you are just getting into content creation I doubt you will think about an external monitor. When I first got into photography I didn’t know anything about brackets and ttl cords.
You can buy a mounting ring that allows you to use canon’s DSLR automatic focus lenses.
Thanks 👍 I am canon M50 user and you just showed me not to buy r50.
I’m glad it helped!
Me too
Does that mean the hotshoe won’t work with Speed lite 430EX III-RT?
if your not fused about these issues than theres nothing to worry about which Im not. thanks for the info though.
2:25 buy a camera frame grip 🤨
I wouldnt use those artman batteries. Pretty sure one bricked my last camera
Does this have clean hdmi out?
I'll do my best from my preferences. Fact by fact first fact you should always hold from mount instead of Camera it's self. You should not pick up Camera from plug in as your showing at 2:17. Especially if your recording your self
did you manage to solve the problem of CR3 files not working in photoshop or lightroom?
Would you recommend this or the Sony a6600
I want to know the sams thing
Hi, I am a newbie.. can you help me so to choose which lens I should buy? I want to buy the Canon R50, but I don't know which lens I should buy. I need to do manly photos to my family.. so for example to a person (bokeh effect) or to group of persons. Which one of these lens you recommend to me?
1) CANON RF-S 55-210MM F5-7.1 IS STM
2) Canon RF 50mm F1.8 STM
3) CANON RF 24MM F1.8 MACRO IS STM
4) Canon RF-S 18-45mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM

Thanks for your work on it 🎉
hi! can r50 point and shoot like canon g7x mark ii? thanks!
Do you think overheating would be a problem running the R50 for hours at a time as a webcam?
@@FoxTailWhipzr100 it's awful with not sensory screen... But it's R series.
would you recommend this for streaming cam... like 4-6 hrs... 5 days a week?
If you’re just a beginner and one to learn more about filmmaking or photography… I think this camera is perfect and all of those issues really aren’t something that you should consider before purchasing.they won’t really have a major affect on you
I got an adapter for the R50 for EF lenses, autofocus everything works. can use almost all my old lenses
Can you share the adapter?
I also bought the Canon R50 with the 18-45 mm lens but the lens cannot be completely retracted so it cannot reach the completely closed original position. I don't know if my description was understandable but is that normal or is my lens broken?
Dude this is an ENTRY LEVEL camera. Nobody is hooking up an external monitor to it.
(which I have bought over decades) if I switched, which on the one hand as a hobby photographer would blow my budget and on the other hand would be anything but necessary because they work and deliver great photos.
why you don't use monitor on camera
I use mine indoors for work recording small chunk clips and it overheats.... Apparently you have to buy thermal pads and fix it yourself...
Awesome, thanks for sharing
Surely using an adapter will fix the third-party lens issue?
Yeah, canon has talent in small things that can annoy you. Im convinced canon really doesn't wanna release a mid range camera without any issues. The hot mount shoe thing is just frustrating considering you were using a 800d or 77d and you're looking to up your video footage while still using flash accessories for photography.
So what you are saying with Canon's new hot shoe, we cannot use external monitors or microphones without spending ANOTHER $40-$50 on their new hot shoe attachment??? 😠
Hmm . . HDMI etc sockets interfere with the grip OR other side interfere with the screen out and reversed. ??
The R50 is a starter camera. Which means you most likely don’t have a lot of accessories so if you want a external flash buy the EL-5 or the newly announced EL10
mate youre Sony user))) you main A7siii ad ZV-e10 so why youre saying like that is your main camera somehow?
Trust me.)
Better than a s24 ultra? And in what way?
What was the background music???
So, when you bought it, you did, or did not know the HDMI port was on the right side?
Hi I am on a search for a camera for getting started in photography, I've never owned a mirrorless camera before and just wanted something that will take good pics, decent videos, etc. Would you recommend this camera? Or would you recommend something else?
How is the battery backup? How many shots in a single charge
Would the r50 but an upgrade over the t7i?
So wait q second: this means I wouldn’t be able to use my Godox V1-C on this camera or my R6 Mark IIs?!
for the every day average joe that likes to take pics and a few video's the "little" canon is very cool.....good points tho, maybe you should trade it for the R10!
The R mount isnt a problem for R50. You can always adapt cheap EF lenses and they will work like a native lens will. You dont need to buy overpriced lenses for this camera
How ?
Use adapter
Meike MK-EFTR-C VND @@janahongki
I think they assume since the camera is small anyway and alot people (especially with big hands) have complaints about their entire hand not fitting on the grip that most people who mount additional hardware to the camera body would most likely be using some sort of tripod mount grip or something for better stability holding the camera, since the grip is small and not very good for people with big hands. So maybe thats why they designed that part so stupidly lol
Also because its marketed toward beginners who probably don't have and wont invest thousands of dollars in 3rd party flashes lenses and everything else a pro photographer would need.
This video was very helpful and informed me about the different types of intentions certain cameras are designed for, thank you.
is the overall width of the hotshoe still the same. Like will audio receivers still slide in the top?
Please make comparison video of Z30 vs R50 , which one you suggest to buy?
Hi.Can you tell me please, if the EOS R50 can automatic rotation (horitzontal to vertical, when you recording a video?Thank you.
Sony zv e10 vs canon r50?? Which one better??
In my opinion, if you will mostly use it for photos the R50 is the best option. Built in flash, EVF, faster burst rate. If you mostly record video, you really can’t go wrong either way. I would mostly consider which lens system you would rather get into.
