great video; to answer your partners' question, at 12:01; the reason the R7 is less expensive than the R5 is that the camera naming culture of manufacturers, they call the KING or top of the line a 1D/R or D1 by convention, the 7{or 700}/8{800} is Pro level, but more sports (resolution compromised for speed, AF performance)\8 is higher res, lack of speed; 5 is Light Pro/Enthusiast level, 300/400 is amateur or beginner level is any 10's aka digits in the 10s not hundreds; also the 1/10/100 placing of the digits indicates crop or full frame type; the full frame obviously more $$ than crop body. there is also a feature set progression in the line-ups, beginners are more auto, the pros have no auto, or minimal, the pro models have dials for iso, shutter, aperture instead of menu or button push and turn for the cheaper cameras, just to name a few differences.
My wife assumes the value behind all my gear is much higher than it actually is. In Canadian dollars, I'd estimate my total value is around $7000. Most of my lenses are used, my lights are mostly off auctions, my printer and bag was off an auction, and only my camera and action cam is new. If it was all brand new, it would easily be $12k, which is what my wife assumes.

It brought a smile to my face to know you have at least been able to pay for your gear. I’ve spent thousands on camera gear that just sits on the shelf or rarely gets used on my travels.
Valuing the price of lenses by weight is a really good guess actually. Polycarbonate lenses made from plastic are lighter and less expensive than the metal/glass counterparts.
Maybe you can answer a question for me. Do music-based UA-cam content creators have photography gear as background props? Because it seems like a lot of photography-based channels have musical instruments as background props, assuming they're shooting the video from inside their home. My brother is a professional musician, so I get what you're saying about musical instruments. While he owns several instruments that cost a pretty penny, his "baby" is his bassoon - major bucks on that.
@@dw.in.michigan I don’t have much musical content that I’ve created on YT and background stuff tends to be musical detritus. That said, I think that folk just have parts of their other pastimes laying around, although my photo gear lives in bags for quick deployment/protection from dust.

I started photography 4 years ago and my craziest purchase as the Sigma 60-600mm. They're like $1500 used. I also spent like $800 on the Canon 16-35mm F4. Honestly, both amazing lenses and worth the prices. I can do videography no problem with the 16-35, the AF is silent. The stabilization on the Sigma, incredible being able to shoot 1/50 at 600mm. Also the AF is basically silent. I wanna get a drone next year. I might try to get into realty photography for extra cash to pay for my camera stuff haha.
Reminds me of an old GF who got sticker shock when I was buying a few pieces of climbing gear and later realized that I was a relative minimalist (or just cheap).
Too Funny, my wife freaks out anytime I start talking about getting new gear. Just on Computer equipment gear alone, I'm in for about 12K, then there's Camera gear, lighting gear, stands, tripods, filters, drones, mics, action cameras, batteries and a few bags to switch out my load when I'm going on a location shoot. I shoot nikon and I'm now planning on adding the Z6III and Z8 to my kit soon, then the FTZ adapter, cage, a z lens or two... yeah that's going to go over well. Loved this episode. Hope sophia sticks around and good luck with the Channel.
My wife really got angry when I bought a 1.200 euro lens, and only a few weeks later found out that..... I already owned that same lens. In my defense, it was after a period of about five years that I didn't do much photography.
I remember a coworker's wife telling him he should buy a more expensive brand of something, because it would be worth more WHEN he dies. Not IF. Not sure what her message was.
Tell me about it. When he placed the mic at the end of the table and it looked like it was about to roll off. The camera, knowing Canon's durability, was probably the least at risk, as it probably would survive a small explosion. 😂 (Look up the image taken by army photographer that got blown up. Soldier died (rip), but camera survived. Canon 1D Mk4 I think it was)
Using the term "partner" sounds wrong for hetero couples. There is friend, girlfriend/boyfriend, fiancé, then wife/husband (or spouse). Partner sounds like you never plan to fully commit. LOL Of course, I'm old school like that. It made more sense when gay marriage was illegal, but with that addressed (US and Canada), it even feels non-committal in that context too.
Since 1974 I have been investing and re-investing in my photo system. I take good care of my equipment and sell items as systems, (camera bodies with lenses) when there is a major change in equipment designs/capabilities. I sold my Nikkormat FT2 and Nikkormat EL with Nikon MF50mm f2 and Vivitar MF75-205mm f3.8 and bought a Nikon F3 with a Nikon MF85mm f2 lens and a Nikon MF35mm f2.8 lens in 1980. I've continued to do this for 50 years and the last update consisted of selling four Nikon bodies with 39 lenses when I closed out my 37year photo business and simplified my system when the Nikon Z system was introduced. I never looked to make money off my older equipment. I weighed the service the equipment provided, and the quality of results derived against the used dollars they bring in. Going from manual advance film bodies to motor advance film bodies, film bodies to digital bodies, MF to AF lenses and from DSLR bodies to mirrorless bodies lowered my outlay for the new system components as major system changes occurred. Some of the latest lenses sold were 10, 20, 30 and 40 years old and the camera bodies were four to eight years old in Immaculate condition.
Having just moved from APS-C to full-frame, and thus needing to replace my whole system, it's a bit of a relief to realize that, however much I may have spent on it, it’s still far less than the prices you've given for the equivalent pieces.
My question is: why do you own a 70-200 F/4 and a 100-500? They almost entirely overlap, no? Why not get a standard zoom to cover the 35-100mm gap? (unfortunately in RF, they don't have many interesting standard zoom options, like the Tamron 28-75 for example would fit well in that gap, but the 24-105 costs the same as the 70-200 f/4)
good question honestly, but maybe it just doesn't fit his style of photography? also, they have the 24-105 f2.8 now, that's a pretty interesting lens imo that pairs great with the 100-500
I really suffered with Gear acquisition until about 12 months maybe 18 months ago and I sold everything that cost me a lot of money and I bought lots of stuff that cost me next to nothing my photography if anything has improved and my photographs no longer look like they are over sample digital photographs. In fact when I show my cameras to any photographer friends and show them the images I am getting from them which is mainly Olympus micro four thirds cameras they can't believe how cheap they were and how good the images are.
I started shooting in high-school using an old nikon d5100 i found in our house and never really bothered to look at lenses or accessories, so i had no idea how expensive this hobby was going to be until just last year when i bought my own camera for the fist time. One year into taking photography a little bit more enthusiastically, ive spent around 3k + usd already like damn im not even a professional photographer lmao

yeah the gear prices add up, and here are indeed some items that could be seen duplicate and nice to have stuff. But tbh this not hugely expensive gear collection and what you have seems very smart in terms of cost/abilities!
Despite things costing what they cost, the selection of gear seems reasonable for a photographer, I was surprised that he didn’t have even more lenses, and I would have expected an extra tripod and gimbal too, plus some lights, flashes, reflectors etc. Being a photographer isn’t easy, because after all, you need to earn back the cost of the gear.
These were definitely eye-watering prices lol, but honestly I expected much worse knowing how much some of the upper-tier lenses and bodies some full-on professionals use. I actually got myself a Sony mirrorless body with two lenses, which came to $1500 in total, which isn't terrible at all for a mirrorless setup but it's still eye-watering to me haha (super stoked to use it though!)
Ya.... I just recently got married and my wife asked me how much everything costs... That what a very eye opening conversation for her haha luckily (Even though she is extremely frugal) she was pretty understanding that it is my career and I do make decent money and support us both with it. Although my gear costs is closer to 25,000 dollars lol
I was like "what!?" when she lined up a full camera with lens and everything as being about the same price as a battery. Turns out it was a toy camera :D
Ha! Small potatoes. I have 40 lenses for my Canon system, and lots of converters / adapters / filters. I have an old digital Pentax system, and an older Pentax film system. In addition to the Canon system, I currently use 3 Insta360 cameras (X1, X3, Ace Pro), and old Sony F828 (for infrared), Olympus TG-6, Lumix TS-200, Nikon P7700. For Processing / viewing / file back-up I have an 8" tablet, 12.4" tablet (brand new addition), a mini travel laptop, and a 14.4" Surface laptop. So you can at least you can defend yourself by saying, "At least I'm not as bad as Ray!"
Sophia seems very understanding but maybe the shock hasn't worn off yet? WAF or GAF is pretty rare in camera equipment (some white lenses apply) but fortunately great photos and videos are almost always approved.
Professional gear IS expensive. Consumer stuff is cheap. I'm a musician, Keyboard player, my main keyboard costs around 3800€ new... bought it for 2800€ used. Then I plug it into my 400€ interface (which was 1500€ new) and then I use my 10.000€ mixing console and use my 1600€ desktop computerwith 800€ display... But that's all professional stuff... Yeah... Camera gear especially can be extremely costly. But it'll last you for a lifetime.
The silver linings here are Alex isn't spending money on cigarettes, booze, or drugs, he can't afford another woman, and photography keeps him out of other types of trouble. There are plenty of guys out here who could benefit from GAS and a good hobby to keep them occupied.
You two make a cute couple. But, I never understand these videos where one partner guesses how much the other partner spent on photography gear. Either you're really secure in your relationship or it's a really really bad idea. Good luck in the future. Love adjustable desks, btw. 🥰
"Now, what's the most expensive you have ever bought, that's not, like, a car?" If I was in her place, I would start asking myself if the equipment is more expensive than the house itself 😂
Never seen your channel before now, but you two are adorable. Gas is expensive and you dealt with it well 😆. Thankfully the UA-cam paychecks almost covered it. 😆

With the climbing gear, you do get to say, "This keeps me alive."
This video is the very definition of humble brag.
I like how their glasses matches to each other. Nice couple!
Someone noticed!
Feeling nervous about that 100-500 and the camera on the edge of the table 😆
Tell me about it. When he placed the mic at the end of the table and it looked like it was about to roll off.
The camera, knowing Canon's durability, was probably the least at risk, as it probably would survive a small explosion. 😂
(Look up the image taken by army photographer that got blown up. Soldier died (rip), but camera survived. Canon 1D Mk4 I think it was)
First time watching one of your videos. I enjoyed it. You two are a great couple. Wish you both the best.
My wife thought it was crazy how much my gear cost until I told her it was all my business expenses and that I personally didn’t pay a dime for it!
Partner?
Business? Financial? Idk?
Having just moved from APS-C to full-frame, and thus needing to replace my whole system, it's a bit of a relief to realize that, however much I may have spent on it, it’s still far less than the prices you've given for the equivalent pieces.
you went out thievin' or what 😂
Alex, I love the may your eyes bugged when Sophia placed your lav mic down 😅😅
hehe
She’s so adorable 😭
My question is: why do you own a 70-200 F/4 and a 100-500? They almost entirely overlap, no? Why not get a standard zoom to cover the 35-100mm gap? (unfortunately in RF, they don't have many interesting standard zoom options, like the Tamron 28-75 for example would fit well in that gap, but the 24-105 costs the same as the 70-200 f/4)
good question honestly, but maybe it just doesn't fit his style of photography?
also, they have the 24-105 f2.8 now, that's a pretty interesting lens imo that pairs great with the 100-500
@@CivilStig Yea, but it costs as much as a car, and weights almost as much as well :D Lovely lens, but I would never put it in my bag personally :P
one I can take anywhere, the other I cannot. Very different purposes overall!
I buy pretty much all my gear used. The holy grail is a widow selling her husband's stuff for what he told her he paid for it.
Cute... and glad you're still together - she's the real deal and forever keeper! (us, I'm not so sure...)
Agreed:)
I like the "help out around the house" as if you didn't live there... 😂 Frail looking guy telling a woman she is tiny... woman are huge 🎉 immensity defines women. Don't compare a woman to a kid. Learn that. I love your videos. That one 😂 She will teach you a lot about life. 🎉🎉🎉 continue bringing the great work. ❤
yeah the gear prices add up, and here are indeed some items that could be seen duplicate and nice to have stuff. But tbh this not hugely expensive gear collection and what you have seems very smart in terms of cost/abilities!
you are genuine hope you will be happy together
Great video. Sophia is a keeper!
~$23 200 total
Minus the $4000 laptop: $19 200
These were definitely eye-watering prices lol, but honestly I expected much worse knowing how much some of the upper-tier lenses and bodies some full-on professionals use. I actually got myself a Sony mirrorless body with two lenses, which came to $1500 in total, which isn't terrible at all for a mirrorless setup but it's still eye-watering to me haha (super stoked to use it though!)
She's definitely Marry her on the spot material ☕🗿
Yeap. I got the same vibe - she's a keeper - which is an incredibly rare find these days.
"And for our last item"
pulls out full cinema rig
Ya.... I just recently got married and my wife asked me how much everything costs... That what a very eye opening conversation for her haha luckily (Even though she is extremely frugal) she was pretty understanding that it is my career and I do make decent money and support us both with it. Although my gear costs is closer to 25,000 dollars lol
I think the first question she had should have been "have you fully paid all this stuff already or do you still own money to somebody?"
I'd like to see the Leica version of this.... waiting...
Instead of criticizing you as an out of control gear junkie, I’m going to thank you for paying for the innovation that benifits us all. 🤔 😁
@@tommyh.8391 I do my part.
5:04 „Oh Boy“😂
Rocking the maven filters ❤
Honestly, I was expecting you to pull out a close to $10K telephoto sports lens. Well done!
she's adorable. definitely marriage material
Sophia seems very understanding but maybe the shock hasn't worn off yet? WAF or GAF is pretty rare in camera equipment (some white lenses apply) but fortunately great photos and videos are almost always approved.
My husband thinks he is the only one with an expensive hobby, he is into audio gear and vinyl. Him not knowing my camera gear can match his madness.
the girl's personality is really attractive.
Which is still not even close to the prices of the instruments professional classical musicians play. In a way, you are getting a good deal 😁
The things on the table are capital investment. If they are all paid for in 3 years, that is good progress. Just stop the GAS, you are doing fine.
Sofia is so sweet. You picked well
The silver linings here are Alex isn't spending money on cigarettes, booze, or drugs, he can't afford another woman, and photography keeps him out of other types of trouble. There are plenty of guys out here who could benefit from GAS and a good hobby to keep them occupied.
If I wanted to make a video like this, do I need to get a partner first?
Greatly enjoyed that one! (I have not had such a talk with B...)
Glad you enjoyed it
You two make a cute couple. But, I never understand these videos where one partner guesses how much the other partner spent on photography gear. Either you're really secure in your relationship or it's a really really bad idea. Good luck in the future. Love adjustable desks, btw. 🥰
Just for fun :)
she made the video 10x better.😂😂
"Now, what's the most expensive you have ever bought, that's not, like, a car?"
If I was in her place, I would start asking myself if the equipment is more expensive than the house itself 😂
Never seen your channel before now, but you two are adorable. Gas is expensive and you dealt with it well 😆. Thankfully the UA-cam paychecks almost covered it. 😆
My man said 1:28 “ everything can’t be on this side” idk she was putting it on the expensive side and that sounds like camera gear to me 😂 really canon so I think she was on to something.
I found your channel while watching a Gavin Hardcastle video. You have an awesome channel and your Newfoundland adventure was terrific to watch. I loved this video with Sophia. You are a blessed man !. Keep up the great work and I hope to do an Armitage Adventure Class™ with you in the very near future. Cheers!
Thanks Bruce
