  • Did you just open up your R50 for Christmas? Are you about to pull the trigger on one but need more information? Are you a phone photographer who is making the intimidating transition to mirrorless cameras? Stick around for this video!
    Clarification: I said the R50 has no image stabilization. I was referring to in body image stabilization. It DOES have digital stabilization, but my experience is that for video it's jerky and not useful for serious work. I still highly encourage stabilizing your R50 with lenses that feature image stabilization.

    Are you going to get an R50? Did you just get one for Christmas? Do you have one? Tell me about it in the comments below!

      Cropped sensors suck....at the same price it's best to grab a Canon EOS R, RP and maybe R8 which in my opinion is the best none IBS Canon Camera for vlogging even with a 50mm which looks like your 16mm but with great bokeh for video, the whole photo demo is a scam man, you need to double the shutter to match the video resolution.

    • @KevinDeal
      @KevinDeal  5 місяців тому +12

      @@mikehunt576 I own full frame, crop sensors and medium format. Crop sensors don't suck unless you're a terrible photographer who doesn't know how to expose properly.
      The R8 is not at the same price point. It's literally almost 3X more expensive, which would not make it at the same price point.I do agree with you that the R8 is a bad ass camera.
      I have no idea what you're referring to when you're talking about a photo demo being a scam. I shoot my videos at 30FPS and my shutter is at 1/60/, which is twice my frame rate. So once again, not sure what relevance your comment has to my situation or my video.
      Thanks for watching.

      @@KevinDeal Kevin, your claims that cropped sensors are as good as the photographer are irrelevant to people seeking a camera for video, who also make up around 85% of this market...so yeah its scam, camera companies are fully taking advantage of the fact the only reason they are in business is for video, if it was not these people cameras would almost be obsolete if phones did as well some how and it could get close at the speed of technology, when you think about it there are birds that can see 100 meters and this is on the horizon.
      Now as for crop sensors having any value at all, Canon discontinues support for the M50, why would or should anyone buy a cropped sensor at $500 when they can find a RP for that refurbished, used or even the body new, its certainly not because of size or weight cause some fun frames now even have bodies as close.
      Canon is also pushing the R50 and difference between this and a full frame is cropped, a beginner camera should be your iPhone, then if anything $300 Canon 5DII if photos are your only interest..but NO ONE is buying cameras for photos but sports and nature photographers, this is why cameras with IBS and lenses with stabilisation are expensive, wedding photographers are assumed to providing videos as well as photos with the same kits.
      I understand UA-cam wil side with the market and the PR firms pushing them to take any videos down showing what I said here cause its true, its a total SCAM by these companies marketing photo capture features to the larger portion of their market which are people buying cameras for UA-cam VIDEOS not photos!

      I have both the RP and the R50, I bought the R50 with the RF-28mm mostly for Photogrammetry due to its light weight, in photogrammetry you have to take about 200+ pics of an object from all angles and its easier on my wrist then using my RP body. And I also take it with me on vacation as well while leaving my RP at home.

    I recently took a one month trip to East Asia and bought the R50 with the RF 28/2.8 pancake and the RF 16/2.8 wideangle for times that I didn’t want to lug my 5DSR around.
    Well, the 5DSR spent the entire trip in the bag at my hotel and the R50 came out with me every day. Usually just with the 28mm lens making it completely pocketable, though at night I used the EF 35/2.0 IS on the control ring adapter.
    I never really missed my full-frame, and absolutely fell in love with the new mirrorless autofocus capabilities.
    I’m far from a beginner (40+ year advanced amateur) and other than some minor inconveniences like the non-locking mode dial or lack of additional dials (control adapter or RF lens make up for it) this camera is fully up to just about anything. I still prefer full frame for depth of field and for long shoots the R50 body is just too small for a comfortable grip, but I can’t imagine a better camera for travel.

    • @KevinDeal
      @KevinDeal  3 місяці тому +4

      Fuji has a pretty good argument for better travel cameras, but that's not convenient for someone who is already invested in the Canon ecosystem like you are. For you, the R50 and those tiny lenses are absolutely perfect for travel. I am eyeing another trip to Italy and I fully intend on shooting it with the R50 for the most part.

    Love how this R50 is regarded as a "beginner" by Canon and ill informed camera snobs, yet produces exact results as a pro full frame at a third of the cost. I shoot real estate with this and the Nisi 9mm f2.8 RF lens, absolutely phenomenal results! This gem of a camera produces stunning 6k video @30fps, downsampled to 4k. Slow it down in post to 24fps and you have solid cinematic video, best I've seen.

    • @KevinDeal
      @KevinDeal  7 місяців тому +12

      Yes. I would argue that in terms of customization and a few other areas, its limitations do render it as a "beginner" camera. But in terms of image quality, if you take bad pictures, you can't blame the camera. The quality is most definitely there. Moving forward, I am using this camera as my static studio shot for my You Tube channel. So it's definitely up to my standards for video. Content creators who come over to this camera should be pretty happy with what they get for their money.

    • @JeepTJWheelin
      @JeepTJWheelin 7 місяців тому +7

      @@KevinDeal I agree with pros like Ken Rockwell, this R50 produces the exact results as a pro full frame. The Nisi 9mm F/2.8 RF lens is a 13.5mm full frame on this crop sensor, plenty wide for real estate. I can't recommend this camera body and lens enough to anyone looking to become a real estate photographer. As far as the so-called "limitations" rendering it as a beginner. To me, that's just highly unnecessary gadgetry folks like me actually prefer NOT to have and aids in my workflow. The less fluff, the better.

    • @KevinDeal
      @KevinDeal  7 місяців тому +7

      @@JeepTJWheelin Nothing wrong with the position you take. It sounds like you hit a home run. I own this camera, the R8, R7 and R5 and pros would have a hard time telling the difference between still shots I take on any of them. Thus confirming that the R50 is a bad ass camera.

    I have replaced my M50 with the R50 and I love this little camera. I was one of the digital combo, a Nikon camera on a top of a Kodak pack back in 1999 and the price for that camera was 10.000k plus the lens, the good thing was that my company paid for it. I’m not a beginner on the camera digital world but at 86 years old with a money budget this camera with 2 lenses for less than 1000k is perfect for me.❤❤❤

    I just came over from the 80D, and bought this camera (arrived today), as I wanted to get my feet wet with Mirrorless 4k. I also bought a Viltrox adapter & speed booster, as I heve a ton of EOS EF Glass, and right now my budget won't alow me to lay down the bucks for more lenses (down the line I will). I'm pretty exited, as the reviews on it are very promising. THANKS for the AWESOME and PROFESSIONAL take and hard work to put out this video! LIKED & SUBED!!!

    • @KevinDeal

      Thanks for the kind words! I tried to not throw my $3000 lenses on the R50 on this review as much as possible in order to keep in mind who would be purchasing the camera.
      I used to adapt EF glass to my R bodies and owned both the native Canon adapters and the Viltrox. I can tell you that the Viltrox adapter is fantastic and you have nothing to worry about in terms of autofocus speed and all that. If anything your older lenses will perform better because the R50’s AF is leaps and bounds better than your 80D.
      Thanks for the sub!

    Great video. I bought this camera wanting a nice small camera for hiking and walk around and promptly fell in love with it. I was blown away by how good the image quality and focus system is at this price point. By setting some custom functions you can access all the important functions without menu diving. (you can access drive mode quickly by pressing the right side of the cross keys)
    Solid image quality when paired with decent glass, great autofocus offering very good keeper rates and a compact package make it a no brainer if those things are important to you. Selective burst shooting with a fast card and the RF 100-400 have yielded some really nice wildlife shots for me.
    I have always like the 135mm focal length so the RF 85mm f/2 which equates to 136mm given the crop factor results in some extremely sharp images that really surprised me the first time I shot the combo.
    Don't let the "entry level" "beginner camera" titles bug you because I would put this camera up against some of Canon's best when it comes to image quality.
    P.S. I am primarily a stills shooter.

    This is the third video Ive watched from your channel. The significant other being the comparison between R8 and R7, when I was seriously thinking of overspending my budget to get the R7(I had to settle for the R10). What I like about your videos is you know exactly which key points to highlight that'd make an otherwise low end camera your forte. But thats essentially the skill factor coming into play. So in essence, a beginner with an R5 would likely take the lesser quality images than a skilled photographer with an entry level camera.

    Enjoyed your video on the Canon EOS R50. I am upgrading for the video and am not your usual target audience. I do macro and photomicroscopy, always tethered, don't care much for auto focus and exposure features. I usually shoot with a Leica Aristophot or with the old Canon FD autobellows with Aristophot bellows lenses or through a photo tube on a microscope. I wanted the 4K video for counting specimens and a cleaner sensor than the Canon EOS T7 that is getting old (~100k shots) or my worn out Canon EOS 5D Mark III.

      I'm assuming you shoot tethered on a tripod. If so, the R50 won't bother you. But if you shoot tethered handheld. the fact that they put the USBC on the grip side is a baffling decision to me.
      The 4K on it is excellent and crisp. I think you'll be happy there, as long as you don't need to shoot in LOG.

    hey man, seeing you respond also to the most recent comments has put in me a glimpse of hope that you could answer also my questions. I'm turning 18 this year and for my present i asked my parents and my relatives only one thing. A new camera. Right now i am occasionally using my mom's Nikon D5000, a mid range dlsr from 2009 and i wanted a medium budget camera that could shoot great photos in auto mode, being that I'm not an expert at using manual mode (working on it), but also, since my passion for cars, a camera that can shoot good videos of like parked cars, a drive by etc... i already saw some reviews and yours is definitely one of the best, it explains in detail how everything works, the recommended lenses for every situation, but i got a question: is it a wise thing to purchase this camera for a light usage (shooting photos at my family during trips) considering the fact that i found a bundle with the body, a RF-S 18-45 and a 55-210 at $880? I am kinda satisfied with the 18-55 that i have in the D5000, but at times i feel like i need more zoom into something, like a far building or a "far close-up", so do you recommend buyng it? (my birthday is in august so i have time to change my mind eventually) Thanks in advance!

      Thanks for the kind words.
      For all the genres you’ve mentioned the R50 will be excellent. It’s geared more toward people who want to shoot in auto modes, so I think it would be a fantastic camera for that.
      If you decide to shoot in M the camera can do that as well. The autofocus coming over from your 2009 Nikon will blow your mind
      As long as you don’t shoot in situations that are too dark, the lenses you are looking at will be great. And keep in mind that the R50 is compatible with all RF and RFS lenses. It’s also compatible with EF and EFS lenses when adapted. You coukd grow your lens collection over time and if you ever outgrow the R50, take them with you to the next camera.

      To be honest, you can get a refurbished R8 for the same price as a new R10 and that's a MUCH better camera than the R10. I bought a refurbished R8 and it comes with the same warranty as a new camera and I honestly couldn't tell it was refurbished at all. Or if you want to keep it APSC, I'd look into a refurbished R7, since it has the dual card slots. Much better suited for a wedding.

    Hi Kevin, first I must say great video, I watched some over 20 videos about R50 but yours is by far the best, appreciate very much.
    Quick question; Me and my wife will get our first child very soon and I am in a need for a camera like the R50, so I can catch moments of my child growing up. What lenses would you recommend for that kind of photography, I just plan to take portrait photos of my family, no sports or wildlife etc.
    I used to take photos a lot but then quit, and that was almost 10 years ago. Back then I had a Nikon D90, and I loved 50mm lens for portraits, but I guess since than the technology changed a lot.
    Thanks again for the review.

      Wow! Thanks for the kind words about my video!
      As far as lenses, my three picks would be:
      RF16mm f/2.8 - great for environmental portraits and landscapes
      RF35mm f./1.8 - has image stabilization, which will make it great for videos, shoots at a normal field of view (like what you see with your eyes). Would get this lens first
      RF50mm f/1.8 | Awesome for portraits. Especially when you want to isolate your subject.
      Because of the crop factor, the above lenses will present as
      26mm
      56mm
      80mm

    Haven't used the R50 much. Only issue has been the body is so small I accidentally touch buttons at the rear top RHS near the grip. Too close for my hand. Both better than my old 2012 purchased 600D (18 MP APS-C) + 18-270 zoom.

      I've never used the EF70-300 lens before, but my guess is that adapted, the behavior will be improved performance because of the advanced autofocus system of the R50. In general, adapted EF lenses perform better on the RF system than they did on their own native EF system simply because the new autofocus system is light years ahead of the archaic systems of the past.

    Thanks for a great review. I bought the R50 together with two kit lenses and the 100-400 zoom as I generally favour wildlife photography. I consider myself an enthusiastic beginner although I have always had a camera. My previous camera was a Canon 80D which I have had to give up due to the weight and the beginings of arthritis. We are shortly to tour the far east and I am looking for a lens which will give me a good range without the need to keep changing lenses and also the need to keep weight down. The Canon RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM has been suggested as a good travel lens but I am unsure how well it would fit with the R50. My understanding is there may be some compromise in performance. Do you have any views on this?

    • @KevinDeal

      The R50 is more geeared toward a hobbyist who requires professional features or someone transitioning from being a phone photographer to a mirrorless camera. The R7 is definitely geared more toward a pro.

    The one thing I would say is, when referring to the deficiencies by yourself, using wedding, wildlife or other pro like photographers as examples for canon will not get any ears, the reason they should do what many experienced people think is normal is to...1 keep the experience the same across all cameras and models such as buttons and menus 2 because even pro or advanced enthusiast photographers may want a blog or travel cam that is small etc but still very familiar and 3 and most importantly, people starting up will be familiar and comfortable to upgrade, they will be the future bread and butter. Anyways, it is a broken way to think to cripple or do stupid ergo things to try and preserve your higher models, what should set models apart should be buffer/frame rate, sensor resolution/quality and that is about it, you should have as much else similar across the range so you can move when your skill and photography require it. Never nickle and dime customers, I think most will resent this.

      The 50mm prime lens will be a bit sharper, it will let in about 3X to amount of light, so you can keep your shutter speed higher (low light) and the 1.8 maximum aperture will give you excellent subject isolation with blurrier backgrounds. The perspective will be excellent for portraits.

      @@KevinDeal Yeah, got it. I will have to go look really closely at the size difference. I am using an old pro body and want an R7 which I will get soon for some video and stills, it will also get one of either 70-200 or 24-70, I do not like lens changes :) but also sold of a bunch of other stuff, like am selling a ZV1 now and was thinking another RF body, because the ZV1 once you have a mic and cage on it is no longer a pocket cam, ppl put down APSc, but these other cams are often 1 inch sensors or less, it makes more sense at similar money to use a R50 and can plonk any lens on it, and is probably pocket size anyway with lens off, sort of.
      I was looking more toward the R10, because realistically neither will be small if I put any decent glass on there. It might get put on a gimbal for video sometimes, but I was really going to use R7 more so for that role.
      Either way it seems for still great results can be had.
      You can see, I am probably using the gear the way perhaps you would, but really this would replace ZV1, do you feel either would do better in dual stills and vid role ? I am assuming you may have tried the R10 here.
      I can see a R10 or R50 perhaps with the smaller lens on it, for some wider shots, vlog type stuff, and just have it handy instead of changing a lens on other 2 bodies. Sometimes there can be some gotchas. Ignoring size, if there any others between those 2 do you feel ? Thanks for any info in advance.

      it can also use a wired remote where the R50 only has a wireless remote. For some this may not be any big deal, but when using things like focusing rails it is a big deal. That is why I kept my 70D for those times. I do like my R50, but if I had to do it over I would of paid the money for the R10 and had been a bit happier.

Now, I need advice about affordable lenses, just one lens, that is proper for vlogging and creating short art films. My understanding is the R10 is the R50, but with an extra command dial, it can shoot cropped 4K, it has a brighter screen and it's a little bigger. Whether that's worth the extra $400, I suppose depends on the user. I'll bet if I didn't own an R8 and R7 I'd lean more toward the R10. But I wanted it tiny and that's what the R50 gave me.
