There is another big difference between R100 and R50, that R100 uses the old processor of canon, so currently it doesn't have any firmware updates and also is not working with the control ring of the RF mount lenses.
You can find some really good deals on used ef-m lenses online. It's certainly not worth building out a huge collection of them, but if you have one of the canon m cameras, I think it's worth grabbing a few, especially if you're just starting out, or taking it anywhere they're more likely to get damaged
This is exactly what a review should be like- informative and easy to understand! I have one question regarding the R50. Will usb charing work if you plug it into your car's usb port?
My 250D enters the chat, but yea. Good comparison. The image quality is basically pretty same for all these cameras and also for my 250D. I'm probably gonna go for the R50 or the R10 in the future when upgrading to mirrorless. R50 seems like a really good choice and the only real reason I would go for the R10 is faster continuos shooting. Of course there's some other benefits too.
Insanely Amazingly great review. Great breakdown of each camera! Thank you, becaise of this review I feel alot more confident in my purchase of the Canon R50! ☺
Amazing video, I was actually debating between the r100 or to spend a little bit more in the r50. I haven't used a flip and touch screen, Im upgrading from a Rebel t6 so I wasn't considering that, but the USB C charging is definitely something I would love to have, not to mention the improved autofocus and the added 4k video quality. Thanks for this comparison, I've decided to get the r50.
For anyone who shoots video primarily at 1080p (like me) and does street photography , R100 is a steal (along with RF 16mm thats 25mm on cropped , kit lens is crap)
Super helpful video! Been contemplating between the M50 and R50 as I'm looking to take up photography as a hobby. I think I'll be going for the M50 since I wanna start with urban portrait photography. 😄
I'm in the process of leaving my M system for an R7. I already have a strong R ff kit, so having all of those lenses available is great. However, I will miss the smaller form factor of the M for hiking and "grab and go," and Canon seems shy about giving us nice RF-S lenses. We know it can be done. I have really enjoyed my EF-M 11-22mm, and in particular, the very lovely EF-M 32mm f/1.4.
I’m confused why you would leave a system behind that you seem to love? If it still has use and value to you why would you leave it? I have the R7 in addition to the M50. They compliment each other. I just got the 32mm and I’m IN LOVE with that lens.
@@FoxTailWhipz Me too! I'll likely get the 10-18mm for my hiking pack, but the build quality doesn't look like it's up to the level of the EF-M 11-22mm with a metal mount. We'll see!
@@DeSireeAlicea19 The 32 mm is a wonderful lens. But, the R7 runs circles around my M5 for birding, and I really don't want 3 camera bodies. To replace the 32mm in the line-up, I've purchased the RF 35mm f/1.8. Add IS, IBIS, and a decent performance, I'm pretty pleased. Though, we know that Canon can make smaller, well-performing prime lenses for APS-C, so here's hoping they remember that, or let 3rd party folk fill the gap.
Have been using the M5 since it launched. I realy don't see the newer R models bring anything tempting to the table, Maybe for video, but I don't do that... I suppose I will use my M5 with the Sigma 16, 30 and 56 for many years to come.
Honestly it was between the r50 or the Sony ZV-1 m2 for me.. and after about 2 weeks of research it looks like the r50 wins outright as they're the same price where I am.
Not quite - it has uncropped 4k/30fps video, unlike any M50, has vastly superior autofocus, and is faster. Don't waste your time and just get the R50. Unless you're a real tightwad, in which case stick with your phone. Seriously.
Thanks for convincing me to avoid Canon with extreme prejudice. First, they outlaw third party lenses. Second, they change the mount format with the new R series. Then they make it expensive and inconvenient to use third party flashes. This is a company that hates and disrespects its customers and deserves to fail. I will be pursuing other options.
Even gopro and similar cameras take higher resolution and frame rates then why even these known manufacturers make such cameras? Are cameras are obsolete for people who have iPhones?!!! I can't understand
do you think I could do some film making with the R100, would you recommend it if you were on a budget and are only looking for new cameras to buy? I had an M50m2. I think it is a superb camera. Now I bought an R10 (not R100). It is like night and day. The R50 may be slightly less capable but you will still be amazed.
I have the R100. Takes much sharper pics than my bridge camera in low light. Pity it doesn't have touch screen focus though. Kinda guesswork with focussing. Also , I keep accidentally turning the mode button with my thumb, because it's so small.
You forgot to mention one detail - Canon locks out third-party vendors in R lenses market - so no new lenses for whatever Canon you chose outside Canon themselves. That's quite important for budget market. I myself as M50 & M50II shooter considered upgrading to R50, but this alone is a total deal-breaker, plus now there's that hot-shoe nonsense you mentioned and I didn't know about.

Yeah, the M50 is the way to go. The R 50 isn't enough of an upgrade because the lens selection is pretty lame. And if you're at a budget, then the R mount is intended to limit you because it has no 3rd party support.

I will be taking some video but probably not too much. Would you still recommend the R50? Is there a better choice in the same price range you might recommend ?
I would recommend the Canon R10 for your wildlife and sports photography - faster shutter. Two cons to this camera: battery life is not good and the camera is not weather sealed.
So for a product photographer, the flash mount won't be useful for studio strobes in R50, and among the 3 the best option appears to be R100, because the screen factor will also not count much.
