I've worked as a photojournalist for the past 35 years. When I need a small, pocketable setup, I use my A5100 (24mp) and a Kamlan 50mm f/1.1 (great for portraits). Take your time (use focus peaking, bracket your exposures), and you will be stunned with the results. Thanks for this excellent video, Mark.

I wanted to learn photography. So I got a used Sony A7s2. Then lens I got with it was damaged. I thought buying a zoom lens would help me practice diversely with different focal lengths. The thing is I don't keep my camera with me. I should have got a fixed focal length lens (which would have also been smaller) and a smaller camera so that I can keep this handy with me always. I need to practice more and more. The setup I have currently I just don't carry with me.
Keeping in mind I want to click pictures in low light during evening and night after office, please share some suggestions for a body and lens to have with me everyday.

@@sweetphilly2 Focus peaking means that the camera indicates in colour on the display which areas of the image are currently in focus while you are focusing manually. Another aid is the focus magnifier, which allows you to enlarge a section of the image in order to focus even better.
Exposure bracketing means that you take several pictures with different exposure times or use the exposure compensation function to take a number of pictures (3 - 5). You then either select the best exposed image or merge the images to create an image with a so-called high dynamic range.

I sold my a5100 after I bought an a6400 as an upgrade. I also bought a Kamlan (100 euros in 2019) at that time when I had both so this was a surprise comment to see this combination. It really does make a good combo when speed isn’t an issue. Image Quality wise, the sensor is as good as you need.

The A5000 was my first Sony Alpha camera. I bought mine in 2014. I bought an A7II in 2018 and an A7IV in 2022. I use the A5000 all the time still because of its compact size and yes the image quality of the A5000 is excellent for a ten year old mirrorless camera.

This is my baby. I bought the a5000 10 years ago at Best Buy for $300. Came with the kit lens (which is pretty bad) and a $100 gift card. Love how tiny it is. Its been my main camera since because its allowed in places where other cameras are not. I go through metal detectors and people don't ever give it a second look.

If you already have an a7 S2 I and want low light, I would get a Sony 50 1.8 which is cheap, around 150 euros and use that. Then upgrade depending depending on what you want. I used an a7 mark 1 with that 50 1.8 at drag racing and offroad events and it turned out great, clean photos even if the a7 focused a bit slow. Then, an offroad buggy went off track and ran over a couple of backpacks. The 50 was destroyed.😅

I use my A5000 with an Industar 69 28mm f2.8 lens and an M39 adapter. The Industar 69 is basically a pancake lens, and together with the A5000 you have a great little setup that you can easily slip into your pocket. Some of the best photos I took in the past year were taken with this setup. Highly recommended!

edit: the focus peaking comes in very handy in absence of the viewfinder.

    • @catalin-ap
      @catalin-ap 9 місяців тому +5

      That is an understatement!
The a5100 is a bad camera, compared to what Sony has today, even on the entry-level. It has decent autofocus, awful ergonomics, and a lack of buttons and a reduced customisability. But it's tiny, ultra-cheap used, and has a flash and a good touchscreen to put your focus point! The a6000 is the much more useful camera, in autofocus and ergonomics, despite not having a touchscreen.
However, compared to the a5100, the a5000 is a garbage camera for not much lower price, and the NEX-5T for instance (one of the best of the NEXs) is awful as well - has that old techonolgy of touchscreen, which is awful and semi-responsive.

I thought the 5100 was basically a nex bodied, without evf, version of the a6000, so has the same AF abilities including the wider pd area than the 5000 also has the a6000 24mp sensor vs the 20mp. If so it should be a really capable pocketable camera.. just lacking certain creature comforts.

It depends on why you're using the camera. The a6700 is a rather strong camera for photography and filming. Any old Sony APS-C camera that you can find for a low price is a good idea because you won't have to replace lenses if you move to an A6700. Tamron 18-300 is undoubtedly the greatest bargain lens for photography, and Sigma 10-18 is best for wide angle. For videographers, the Sony 18-105 power zoom and Sony 10-20 power zoom are excellent lenses. For novices who wish to combine both photography and filmmaking, the 18-105 power zoom is the greatest option for affordability and quality and versatility.

I occasionally do commercial work and event photography. For that, I use manual lenses a lot, even on my A7III.
My favorite one is a vintage Canon FD 135mm f2.5 - it is tack sharp, buttery smooth in operation with a very long throw and some really good weight, with a built in lens hood. Stop it down to f/4 and you can shoot it all day.
The best thing is: you can get those for well under 100 bucks.

However, both the A5100 and A5000 are nowhere near $100 at MPB now. Try 3x more. The A5100 impressed me so much that I bought a new A6700, mostly for its autofocus, stabilization and video upgrades over those older models. Now I have access to the vast E-mount lens universe. Still getting used to the size-weight increases vs my MFT gear.

Great points!!! I love the way that U're different from the rest of the UA-camrs especially those jumping on promoting every single latest, greatest n most expensive gears! I'm a serious photographer and until now, I still can't justify for replacing my Sony A6000 (which I brought in 2014, sorry Sony) ... and I can take any photos just about as good as any latest cameras! The main reason is, in today's digital age, the camera itself is just a light capturing device and once the image is captured into 1s n 0s digitally, one can easily manipulate the image computationally ... whether it is lens distortions, noise, saturations, colors, sharpness, contrast, len boken and etc! I sincerely hope more people who are seriously into photography spend more time into studying lightings, composition, perspective, post production and developing one's artistic style to become a great photographer rather than focusing endlessly on the gears ... and leave changing every latest cameras and lens to the gear-heads!!!

There's so much BS online about "outdated" "obsolete" cameras - that are absolutely NOT even if they are (gasp!!!) ten years old. I enjoy it when someone shows some love for these "old" Sony cameras. I own some newer and "fancier" ( and more co$tly) Sony cameras - and also still shoot with a NEX-6. It has an EVF, so although not quite as small as the a5000 and with an older 16mp sensor, I stick with it. I enjoy putting an excellent lens on the NEX-6 because like the a5000 you can get some fine captures that way.

Soon nearly a year on, are there alternatives now? Seeing used A5000's go for about $300-500 online, a far cry from when the video was released and the point of the video.
Would be great if there was an update.

    Mark Wiemels Hi Mark
I have been out with my a5000 today taking test shots with a vintage lens for a video I am doing, I have had mine for about 4 years.
I got it for next to nothing as it was bare bones with no parts other than the kit 16-50 electric zoom lens which is awful. I bought it as a third camera behind my Pentax SLR and sony zv1 vlogging camera. I mainly use it for low light and night shots as its so much better than the Pentax.
I have a sigma art 19mm 2.8 a sony 18-55 ios kit lens and today I have been playing with a vintage m42 helios 135mm 2.8, the results have been great as is the camera I love mine. Miss having a hotshoe mount but memory card placement is an upside over some other sonys as is all the built in modes.

I still use my Sony nex 3n for photos sometimes although the canon m50 beats it at indoor mixed light/ natural light photography as the Sony photos need a lot of color correction they quickly turn out too dark and too blue indoors

The latest tech is not always optimal unless you are a high end pro. My criteria for camera shopping is that the results have to at least beat my phone, which I already have all the time. An alternative for me needs to be super portable, lightweight, rugged, superior resolution (not necessarily 40mp with higher storage needs and processing requirements), excellent single battery life, AF and 4k video for crisp viewing. I like the idea of a good relatively inexpensive quality camera just to grab and go, without the worry of damage or theft, just to be available anytime. I'm also poor and always looking for a deal. Thanks!

everything I use, except my action cameras, are from 2010 to 2016 and I love how they all look. All my camcorders, cine cameras, DSLRs, point and shoots. It blows me away how they all hold up after all these years. And the price of most of these are in reach of almost anyone out there. $10 for a good point and shoot to $600 for a cine camera that at one time cost over $7k. Newer isnt always better.

I went cheap when I had my Canon EOS 400d, (Rebel XT in the US) and got the cheap Canon 50mm f/1.8 - what a great portrait lens that is for the price. That it's plastic and the AF is noisy and slow doesn't matter.

i think for video today action cams make more sense, because people tend to film for longer time than what it takes to make a photo, so the arm gets tired holding a camera to record, so for phto is good enough.and so you can be recording with an action camera and taking photografs with both hands free.but yeah, todays if it can t record in 4k and if it doesnt have amic entry and isnt type C , it be incomplete and thats very bad already.

I had Nex-5T as my first camera and omg I loved it and used it for almost 10 years before I changed it for a6400 (while keeping the lenses). Upgrade was definitely needed, but that camera still has a place in my heart. And I think it's a fantastic starter camera. Sony makes it so easy to get into photography!

Last year I had this exact camera and the a6000. One thing that the a5000 beats the a6000 is in the grip.
I LOVED how the a5000 felt in my hands, something I did not felt while holding the other one. In every other aspect the a6000 is the superior camera.
The a5000 is truly compact, with a pancake lens you are having a mini Ricoh. The problem with it is the lack of buttons and dials to change settings.
I did configured it in a way to quickly access the menu and switched between Av and Tv.
I even took both the a6000 and the a5000 to cover for a kids birthday party as requested by a friend. Sucked at night time but I got the 28-70mm zoom on the a6000 and the 50 1.8 on the a5000 and still got great pics with them when light was still around.

I've been saying it for years, if you don't care about the focusing system or video the improvements in image quality in the last 10 years are minimal. It's nice to hear someone else say it too! Give me another 2 more stops of dynamic range, Now that's something I think would be a huge improvement and worth it.

If you can live without the EVF (I'm not sure I could necessarily) the a5000-series is the hidden gen that many people do pass up and is still very usable today. Yes it is now based on 10-11 year old sensor tech (maybe even older than that) but it does use the mostly the same stuff as the original a6000, which was a highly regarded camera as being very good overall at the time.

I am still very keen on my NEX-6 for being small and for containing creative apps. It makes my a6700 feel bulky. The issue is the NEX's compatibility with latest "cheap" lenses. I bought a TTArtisan 27mm/F2.8 to pair the two to make an almost pocketable set. Two problems with the lens on this camera. One, it refuses to do continuous autofocus. Second, no Lightroom profile for the Sony version of the lens, only a Fuji one is there. In other words, or words of warning, the latest lenses may not be compatible with semi-vintage cameras. TTArtisan in their reply give me no hope regarding the autofocus issue.

I am after a super compact camera setup for travel. I have a lot of potential candidates but have not got to a point where i am really happy with the choice. I have owned a a5100 and really liked it but my current setup i use the most is a fuji xa7 , 12mm samyang manual lens and the kit 15-45 , this setup weighs in at 760g , i also have a few cameras like a fuji x20 at 350g and a canon g9x at 200g but really miss the 12mm lens , i find this is my preferred lens but finding a compact with this focal length is impossible . My ideal system would be a compact with wide angle capability or possibly a m43 with a compact wide angle fixed lens but havent been able to find anything that weighs in at a significant reduction from the weight of the fuji xa7 setup, any suggestions?.....
