I experienced gall stones many years ago when I was following a strict LOW FAT diet! After several weeks of dieting (and yes I did loose some weight) I had a high fat risotto at a friends house. That evening I awoke at 3am with excruciating pain in my chest. My wife thought I was having a heart attack. Within an hour of being checked out by the First Responders, I threw up and the pain mostly went away. I later had tests which showed I had several gall stones and the doctor wanted to remove my gall bladder (if you don’t have a gall bladder you can’t get any more stones - right!). After some research, I decided not to have it removed and changed my diet. That was over 15 years ago and I’ve never had a problem with my gall bladder since! I’ve always struggled with my weight but I’ve been on a Keto diet from April following your advice (I found your web site by chance when I was looking for Covid19 advice back in March) and have lost over 25 lb in weight, reduced my BMI from 37 to 30 and my waist from 42inch to 38inch and now have perfect blood pressure readings. People who have not seen me since the lockdown started can’t believe the change! Thank you so much for your great work!!!!!

I have been having gallbladder issues and have noticed in the last couple of weeks that my gallbladder pain returns when I have not eaten in more than 12 hours...largely due to my job and time issues. The pain subsides within 5min of eating or drinking something, even if small.

15 years ago tried a 3 day water fast. Felt super energized so I continued. At 12 days my teen sons insisted I eat. Really wasn’t hungry after day 3. BUT when I slowly returned to normal eating (I had never had any medical issues) , had gallbladder spasms. The pain prompted me to get it checked. The fluoroscopy showed gallbladder was “full of sludge and atonic”. Dr. Said I needed it removed.
I refused. Haven’t had any problems since, other than occasional spasms when I overeat fried foods.

I developed gallstones from fasting and I was eating pretty low carb/keto prior to starting prolonged fasting. I also depleted my iron stores. I'm definitely stressed all the time. I had two attacks following two refeeds, changed up my whole approach to fasting but getting hives after refeeds and again the iron is extremely low. I don't think everyone can approach fasting the same way. I did research on fasting for two years before I felt brave enough to try and although I felt great during and after, it's just not the same for everyone.

I experienced my first and only gallbladder issue while doing an extended fast, about a year ago. I'd been keto for about a year, and doing quarterly extended fasts. Ultrasound did not show any stones. I could not fast longer than about 16-20 hours without pain. I eventually passed whatever sludge. The thinking at the time was that the sludge was from my previous low-fat diet, and that fasting led to the attack because I was "using my gallbladder" again. I haven't had any such issues for at least 4-to-6 months. I'm planning another extended fast soon.
I'm of the opinion that USING your gallbladder is the best remedy, so been LCHF ever since and don't plan to skip the fat in the future. The carbs, are another story. Done with those.

Thinking I’d like to maintain at around 50-70g net carbs but will have to see how m body reacts as I increase the carbs a little bit at a time. It’s also interesting that I am seeing more and more UA-cam videos (Thomas DeLauer and Mindy Pelz for example) who advise coming off keto occasionally to make sure metabolic flexibility between fat and carb burning. Have therefore also been thinking of going off keto for 2 weeks every few months...

I highly recommend that anyone interested in this issue look into Dr. Hulda Clark’s gallbladder flush, sometimes called the Liver Flush. As someone with two parents without gallbladders, I have assiduously tried to take care of mine, and was recommended to this flush many years ago by a healer. The first time I did it, I got rid of a 3/4” gallstone, just to show how safe and effective this flush is. It takes less than 24 hours and it’s not exactly fun, but it’s so worth it! I hate being super careful about every single thing I eat, and now I can eat most everything in moderation.

They took out the gallbladder and sent it to a lab and it came back cancerous. Than they told her she’s fine now and can go home, she had pain again while traveling overseas. She found out through a homeopathic doctor while traveling to Pakistan that she has cancer spread throughout her. When she flew back and went to UMDNJ, they told her she has max 5 years to live. But she lived for 14 months and died after catching pneumonia during her cancer.

My problems are exactly in this area, I was overweight, I started on OMAD and I got to an acceptable weight, then the corona and the earthquake started in my city and somehow I got lost in those stressful conditions... I regained all the weight , another attempt via IF was hindered because I got pancreatitis and spent 10 days in the hospital until the inflammation of the pancreas subsided, along the way they also found stones in the gallstone that block the exit of bile. I was recommended an operation, but it was not done because of the Covid conditions in the hospital. Now I'm on OMAD again but with fear because everything is more demanding and I'm afraid of recurrent inflammation of the pancreas. Do you recommend surgery in my case or should I just try using TUDCA? Does OMAD worsen the condition of my liver and pancreas?

You had stones before, but they were asymptomatic .Trying to flush them stirred'em up and made one or more stuck in your bile duct. Id say there was 90 to 99% chance that they would pass by themselves, if not you'd die. You had to monitor your bilirubin level to save your gallbladder. Once your piss is brown, id say every 3-4 hours or so

I have a friend who is a family practice physician and I asked him that same thing. He said that even though you don't have a gallbladder the bile comes from the liver so stones can develop and get stuck in tube that goes directly from the liver to stomach after having the gallbladder out. I hope I explained that correctly. I think that is how he explained it to me.

I agree. I suffered with gallstones in my 20s. I had to stop eating pretty much altogether in my early 30s and went on a lectin free ketogenic diet in my late 30s. I will tell you that my gallbladder has not been a problem since the original slowingdown on eating. However, recently, my personal trainer works me hard enough that I have to eat carbs if I’m going to lift what he is giving me. This is after four years of refusing to listen to three different personal trainers tellling me to eat and what to eat. After adding carbs back into my diet, I’m actually growing muscle and able to push heavy. But I do see the aging in my face and additional weight. so I don’t really know what I want at this point. But fasting did improve my gallbladder.

This is confusing. I have done intermittent fasting off and on for years but lately I just try to stick with three meals a day, with an occasional healthy afternoon snack. Does this mean fasting from dinner until breakfast the next day is going to increase the risk of gallstones? I absolutely developed a gallstone 3cm doing Keto OMAD for 2 months. I happen to have a CT done a few months prior and then right after stopping my 2 months of OMAD. My body somehow created a 3cm stone that was found accidentally on the 2nd CT. At the time I had the 2nd CT I was having all kinds of digestion issues. I could barely eat because after a few bites I was extremely full. Then I would get a stomach ache and my bowel movement was yellow or orange at times. My bowel movements were sometimes half pale and half normal. My gastro explained to me that we need to eat to keep bile production going. He told me to pause fasting and sure enough i felt better quickly. My labs all returned to normal as well. Occasionally I will still have a lighter stool. I would love to try and boost bile production more as I feel like digestion is a bit slow and I get constipation. For reference my liver, ducts and labs are all great except for bilirubin is at 1.1 and it should not exceed 1 on the reference and no pain ever... I am carnivore and fasting 16:8 or less.

I doubt Dr Berg will ever see this, but I followed his healthy Keto plan to the letter and developed gal stones about a month into his regimen while doing the 18 hour fast. The fats and cholesterol became saturated and my bile thickened to the point that I began having pain on my right side. After an Ultrasound, it was revealed I had 2 small gal stones. While I think this is definitely related to my new diet and eating routine, it also is related to another underlying issue with my liver function that needs to be investigated, and is something Dr. Berg and co. should look into before recommending this diet to virtually everyone before talking about the risks.

Low bile production with years of low fat diet will cause gallstones, especially when you fast . Body uses stored fat during a fast and liver processes a lot of cholesterol from it. When you have low bile , it will turned to stones . Always take bile salts when you fast especially in the beginning if you were on a high carb low fat diet for a long time .

I think usually gallstone attack when u eat oily food, your gallbladder automatically squeezes out bile which emulsifies your intake for easy digestion . Now, if u don't eat for a long period of time, then u might end up getting gallstones, meaning your bile which is a green liquid may have turned into stones . it's like having blocked sink and you're trying to force water through, eventually it wil back up all over your kitchen floor. With gallbladder, it will swell and gradually radiate to your shoulder all the way to your chest due to eating oily food . . and if you try to eat something oily again , instead of the gallbladder squeezing out bile , it squeeze out stones which somehow struggle and get stuck in your cystic duct . That's where the pain starts very excrucuaiting pain especially when u have a big stone trying to force it's way through a small duct that's connected to the gallbladder. The pain is so excuciating . Having called the the ambulance for like 20 times, it came to a point that they stopped coming because i refused to take out my gallbladder every time i get admitted . They felt like i was wasting the NHS money in the UK. i went through it for like 3 years dealing with this hardcore pain each time i eat something oily by mistake . i dont wish this pain on anyone i had to give my life to christ praying every night after like 2 years of praying then the stone moved from my gallbladder to my common bile duct and the stone was eventually taken it via endoscopic procedure .and i get to keep my gallbladder . since then, no problem ever since. Thank you Jesus . i felt the gallstones was caused by juice fast i did for like 40 days straight with no food trying to lose weight.

I developed appendicitis after 4 weeks on keto. My doctors said they weren’t aware of any link. I’m curious if you’ve come across this.

That can occur for many reasons, usually is constipation, also I am not a doctor but I have a friend who suffered from the same condition, apparently is pretty common

aethermaxis pocasangre well I wasn’t having that problem that I was aware of... though I was eating more dairy than normal. Lol. They said it’s unusual to get appendicitis at age 50. Usually happens to people much younger. Since keto is new-ish, I wondered if this link had even been investigated.

I had a really heavy meal before I had appendicitis (at 40 years old). I think I may have gotten constipated as well. Fiber is so important.

Can anyone tell me wether or not it is safe and okay to be taking Dr.Berg’s products: D3 & K2, nutritional yeast tablets, trace minerals, wheat juice powder, fasting tea, sports drink, and hair formula daily at the same time? I’m 21 year old male. 6’3 / 187 pounds and very active. No health conditions at all as far as I know and not taking any medications

So, the riskiest fasts are between 15-19 hours?
How often should we fast with these hours?

Please give me an answer to my question. An obese person with insulin resistance should do intermittent fasting with healthy keto to get healthy and lose weight. I understood. But how much kcal? I never hear anything about the amount of energy. This is the last info I need :)

Every time I was on healthy Keto, I kept getting gallstone pain. The weight melted off week after week, but I was getting gallstone pain once or twice a month. One time I had it 3 times in one month. Every time I went back to my old unhealthy eating habits and gained weight rapidly the gallstones would stop... I don't know what's happening.
So I've tried Keto 2 separate times. Each time I was able to lose 50-60 lbs in just 4-6 months, but because the pain from the gallstones was excruciating, I'd stop and I would gain back 60-80lbs in 8 months-ish.
If anyone has suggestions please do.
