- Questrospective's journey through the Kamurocho streets finds us spilling into Sohtenbori, and picking up the pieces of one's life. One year after the events of Yakuza 1, Kazuma Kiryu takes it upon himself to lay the Tojo clan's rivalry with the Omi to rest. But is the Dragon of Dojima really just doing his part, or is he haunted by the ghosts of his past? This Action RPG is a fantastic improvement from the first, but it's also a vehicle for Kiryu's torment. It's about surviving, doubting who you are, and the existential dread of both. Also Majima is wearing a hat in this one. GC Positive presents to you: Yakuza 2!

Honestly thought the Haruka being scouted was only added in Kiwami, but glad to know it wasn't an after thought.
There's a really nice sense of continuity in 5, even if the scout scene in 2 was just a side gag.
The last bomb wasn't at top of Kamurocho tower, it was at the top of Kamurocho HIlls. Great vid !

Once again, you made me sit and contemplate through your video. This was such an amazing character study, and also amazing that the whole thing was made in an year.
I probably won't be playing the original PS2 release and go for Kiwami 2. I know there are huge changes in the remake, but I can't dedicate time on both games.
That's super understandable! Kiwami 2 has a lot of changes I'm excited to take a look at once I get to that point in the order of release!
Then you should dedicate your time to the original, mate. You can play Kiwami 2 a couple years later to see what's been ruined.
Just finished watching the first two of these videos and the quality of them were so good I was thinking to myself, man this guys great at this. Then I see his current sub count complete injustice man.. the quality of these retrospectives is up there with some of the best creators here.

Took me a bit to catch up and watch because I've been busy as hell but let's do this shit:
Ahhh, an attempt to make the city-scape more accessible to new players makes sense for defining the design of Sotenbori.
Seconding the feeling you get upon returning to Kamurocho, it just feels like growth, especially the (now) construction area. It also made me think of how much of the city seems stained or stuck in stubborn ways- including the underground remaining despite the ground directly above getting a remodel. Things change, but some things refuse to.

My dumbass desperately wants to get good at Shogi because Yakuza's introduction caught my intrigue with its similarities to chess (obvious reasons as to why) but in each of the games I've played thus far I have still yet to truly slow down and learn, for shame on me.
Mahjong on the other hand has just never really caught my interest. Feels too similar to most card games (which goes to show my lack of actual understanding behind them- they don't interest me so I don't retain their details).
Both being initiated for the Yakuza series HERE is interesting to hear as both are pretty darn substantial and popular games on their own merit- and seeing as I've only played the Kiwamis for both 1 and 2 I hadn't much way of knowing 2 was the starting point. Cool to know :P
GC reveals his truest addiction, Mahjong- It's always fun to hear some enthusiasm behind an interest so that burst of sharing was a fun micro section to the video.
I'm so glad you're reaction to the yakuza hunter was the same as mine- She really starts the whole show just being 200% badass.
I'm adjusting to the more joke infused editing and I gotta say, it's working out. The deez nuts piece did undermine the conversation YOU were having, but subsequent jokes added a nice undercurrent of humor without interruption.
Honestly comes with the territory of practicing editting etc I just wanted to say overall it's working pretty damn well, but double checking if you undermine yourself can help the tone stay less hectic.
Agreed on the way she gets less powerful over time. That was quite a bother, some of it felt like a genuine "She's showing some of herself" to me which was good! THAT kind of vulnerability makes sense- but so much of it was just.... not really that and more turning her into another thing for Kiryu to protect. Which, sure he'd protect anyone etc, but she came in as a Majima and left as a Haruka.
That's a shit way of saying things but I'm commenting after hours of writing, here's hoping intent or my purpose gets through a marginal amount of this post.
I'm exceedingly thankful that you went deeper into the hosting side content because I was, sadly, just not able to invest myself into it since it was copy/paste the same as what Zero had on offer. It became far too tedious for me to even bother listening to their stories and that's the bread and butter of doing that content in the first place!
More than a bit saddened, but it's just how things played out- so hearing more on it from you, even as a simple overview of things I'm well aware of I suppose, was like a nice refresher on something I feel I missed out on the full appeal of.

Backing up, I adored the scenes with that shogi survivor- his death was insanely well don for looping into Kiryu's guilt and just as its own view of that particular man's life.
Sayama's change in view over the game was a nice for that particular (stab) scene in my opinion. The way her opening talks with Kiryu amount to "If you were responsible, you'd die as well." and in that scene she talks more on how killing for revenge has lost appeal and doesn't make things equal as she had once said- textbook or not, that development was nice to see played out here.
THAT GIANT GOLDEN CASTLE MADE ME SHOUT WHEN IT HAPPENED MY PLAYTHROUGH. LIKE WHAT THE LIVING FUCK. EVERYTHING IS WILD THERE. EVERY FUCKING PART OF IT WAS NUTS.
I just want to circle everything back to repeating something I should say damn near every vid- I love the way you write these damn things, the things you pick apart to expand on thoughts many of us (or even better- few of us in some cases) grab onto during gameplay. Specifically now I refer to your talk on the dragon's worth around 25 minutes in, in which you explain the "good" or positive strength the dragon has held for Kiryu as demonstrated through Ryuji in this case- because during gameplay there was a lot to absorb throughout the scene saving Haruka, among which included updating views on Ryuji as despite being (up to that point) presented as purely monstrous- nothing but power and rage willing to tear apart his own family and kill allies and innocents-
After all that, he is the one on the other side of the conflict to assist Kiryu in that moment. That was a big moment for expanding thoughts on Ryuji for myself and likely most others, but you went and thought on that point until you began to tie the connections between Kiryu and Ryuji and their dragon title/personas into the story.
Mostly I'm saying, you took a moment we all think on, and you made a point to really derive deeper meaning for the overarching story in a way I enjoy listening in on, man. This is universal to your vids, and sure others try the same deal, sure WE try the same deal, I just mean the way you personally expand on the topics- the parts of yourself you put into these creative outlets- it's god damn valuable stuff and I very much appreciate it.
JUST SAYIN- Driving the segway between character to gameplay by explaining how Haruka's words impacted Kiryu and how that leads to him FUCKIN' PEOPLE UP etc was a fucking A+ segway, hell yeah. Mostly I mean this in terms of flow- it really feels as smooth as ice, just slide right into the next topic without missing a beat. Nice.
I (99% at least) take back my mention towards undermining your commentary with the joke edit. The only one that felt out of place was the first deez nuts, but I hate to say it, the SECOND one actually fuckin' made it even more worth it. You were right, I was wrong, fuckin' Kiryu's reaction and everything is on point lol.
Your wrapup does it again, exceptionally done.
And without drawing away from how touching it is just to dwell on the messages from the game or your vid- that closing clip was a good laugh.

"Things change, but some things refuse to," is such a good complement to my thoughts on the Dragon persona, that I'm surprised I didn't realize it was part of the theming of Yakuza 2. Whenever I find something that gets the wheels in my head turning, I refuse to let go until I exhaust my mind thinking about it. I'm so glad you're still here supporting that kind of thinking and giving me some REALLY GOOD feedback AND additional elements from the game to think about. Maybe in yakuza 8 if we ever get a yakuza 8 that haruka will find kiryu and find the truth on why kiryu left which was to protect her and her lover which accepted on being a father to their new born child

It's a shame that the host minigame did not come back in Kiwami 2. Even if the club management club minigame was nice, it was a redo of Yakuza 0's minigame.
I haven't played Kiwami 2 yet, but knowing it's not there makes me kinda sad. I kinda get it though; it played mostly like the going to a hostess club just with the role reversal. I think the role reversal made it a worthy inclusion!

Games look MUCH beteer on emulators though, much higher resolution and other stuff. Rose tinted glasses is the reason

I'm glad we grew up with this, but kiwami is so much better.
I hear Kiwami 2 is way better than Kiwami 1, and I'm really curious about how they changed some of the story elements from the original 2. Can't wait to get to it in the series!
GC Positive from what I understand, the main story beats are largely unchanged. The main differences outside of the combat are the mini games. The VR lightsaber and host mini games are no longer there. I think they also removed the bowling alley. . Things that were added are mostly Majima related. He gets a mini campaign that takes place before the main story and wraps up a storyline introduced in the prequel, Yakuza 0. Another thing an RTS game that’s a slight improvement from the one in Yakuza 6.

The series is complicated. For every moment of good representation there's another of bad. Like A Dragon apparently makes a lot of big steps to be better about a lot of things, I'm told. I'll tell you what I tell everyone else. You can play the games for the stories they tell and the lessons they pass on. Just remember you don't have to listen to *everything* they tell you. Video games are BIG. And they contain a lot of different opinions and ideas inside of them that don't always agree with each other. Love them for the parts you enjoy, but hold them accountable for the things they shouldn't do.
Man this dude is trying way too hard to be deep when acting like everything in stories must be some kind of metaphor or abstract thing and picking out unimportant details as something worth reading into, convinced it must be really farfetched garbage philosophy for no good reason.
Because let's imagine that about every character and event are in fact meant to be representing some kind of inner struggle and whatever. Then is the game about a totally irrelevant thing that happened to a brain in a jar? Because what is actually going on if nothing is real or as it seems?
You realize the point of metaphor is that the things are actually happening in the story AND also can represent other things, right? Like those two things can coexist.
Also, it's nice you think what I'm doing requires a lot of effort, but it really doesn't: different things will stand out to different people when they ingest media. This is what stood out to me and how I felt about it. Maybe you'd like to tell me what your thoughts are on Yakuza 2's story?
