There are few characters from the Ryu Ga Gotoku franchise who aren’t prime candidates for a dedicated ballad. The series is ripe with supporting roles who’ve been fleshed out into memorable pillars keeping every entry upright with stories of their own. Daigo Dojima’s encapsulates privilege. Shun Akiyama’s revolves around the momentum of financial power. But somewhere in the middle of this very tiny spectrum I’ve just arbitrarily constructed inside your mind is Kiryu’s closest ally and Ryu Ga Gotoku’s forgotten keystone. One whose growth is determined by the role he’s needed to fill by the narrative- and somehow still has a clear throughline. A hero’s journey in a series not really known for using said literary mechanism. It speaks on authoritative power, how it’s designed to maintain appearances and uphold a status quo in a system meant to keep people under the thumb of a ruling class. How removal of said oppression is only possible from the outside of such an organization. And it kind of botches the job towards the end? It’s messy. Messy enough to warrant a conversation. Messy enough to make it a fascinating character study. I’m GC, and this is the ballad of Makoto Date.

Date is a very fun take on the idea of a hardboiled detective. It's typical to think of a hardboiled detective as a hypermasculine figure, which Date clearly on some level fancies himself, but an extremely important portion of those kinds of stories is the detective getting absolutely whomped by the forces they're up against, which Date does pretty well. I wish we'd gotten more time with him ultimately, and maybe we still will.
I want him to open his own detective agency and- wait...
My hottest Yakuza take: Date should've won the dilf contest from that one kiwami substory
Dude💀 stop. I can se where you’re coming from but wanting date to win over , Kiryu is THE dilf.
Then again, he did tell the lady he basically performs daylight robbery
What is strange is that the only time you get to play as Makoto Date in the series is during the climax battles in Yakuza Kiwami. Even then he is a drunk who can hardly fight. Poor Date.
i would like to mention that in yakuza 3 his fighting style is actually improved quite a bit and it was then re purposed as tanimuras fighting style in yakuza 4
Date is without a doubt Kiryu's best friend. Majima, Akiyama, Daigo, Kazuki/Yuya are all great allies, but Date always has a different vibe. Especially the ones in the Tojo Clan, they always seem more like close colleagues than true friends.
Also fun fact: Makoto Date is one of the only characters not in a yakuza organization who gets a black & white still frame showing his name and title. My guess is because they did it in the OG Yakuza 1, so they wanted to stay consistent. It's not 100% consistent across all titles, but he gets the honor more than anyone else.
3:05 - Damn that kabedon.
I don't care what the games say, Date is Kiryu's best friend and I love him
Bro, I love Date. He's the one character I like that isn't dead in yakuza series😂 even from what happen in yakuza 6, Date seems the only closest person who knows the truth about Kiryu.
Top tier video. Date needs more love, especially later in the series. Despite being one of the main characters, he seems like a side story. Adachi seems to be RGG’s attempt to redo that.
I dunno how yall feel, but I would love to have a total fiction character with Date, like, he training and being a kind of old daddy Yagami
Man, this is a good video. Came at the worst time for me playing 6 because now i don't want to finish it even more than I already didn't, but... I appreciate this video for putting date into perspective for me, and reminding me why i liked him in the first place.
Great video, GC!
I think we can all agree date is got to be the best side character/ recurring character
hes a bit clumsy, as described by one of the staff members of rgg
Just another reminder that Yakuza 6 caused a lot of problems for its characters and themes that I am curious how Gaiden will remedy if at all.
THANK GOD someone else appreciates Date :D
not every character needs closure, this is life we are talking about
finally some date appreciation
While Date has specific goals, he seems to prioritize helping out his allies over everything. I think thats cool, and pretty similar to Kiryu
As always sir, just amazing work. Always hated how dirty they did Date at the end of six. I wish I could forget that game as well. Then they didn't even give him that big of a return in 7, just felt like a forced cameo.
I’m hoping that Date returns in Gaiden.
Great
wow, youtube didn't give me a notification for this one...
It loves to do that!
Can someone explain to me why do people hate yakuza 6 so much?
I know its not perfect, but it didnt seem nearly as bad as people say it is, for me atleast.
A lot of people were not happy with the ending and the secret of Onomichi. Y6 is in my top 5 RGG games so i really don't understand the hate for it either
Date-san is as Commisioner Gordon to Batman, as he is to Kiryu
All jokes aside, I think we can all come to the conclusion that Yakuza 6 shouldn't exist.
What do you have against 6? It's a good game.
Nice video anyway.
I love Date, I wish I could date Date :(
I doubt rgg was trying to give an all cops are bad messsge with date and just made a classic strayed cop character i think you are looking to much into this character
It's projection.
Dissing Yakuza 6 while praising Yakuza 5 is craaaazy
Yakuza 6 hater opinion invalid 😇
Yakuza fans are the most insecure people lmao
He's lowkey a boring character
